On tap in Belgium. This beer is dark brown and cloudy with a tall loose head. An unexpected aroma arises from this beer, beyond that spicy, hoppy and malty aromas a distinct cherry kool-aid note is definitely present. Taste is similar with more toasted sweet malt with a cherry like sweetness with some hoppy flavor to finish up. An interesting beer.

Pour is transparent caramel brown with lively bubbles rising fast to the top and a light tan head. The nose has no saison to it, caramel and sugar with a stale grain and light floral hop. Taste is the same, lots of sugar and caramel, light lemon with notes of floral hop and low bitterness. Body is light but feel is syrupy with an underattenuated sugary feel with assertive carbonation.

330 ml bottle into tulip glass, no bottle dating. Pours very hazy reddish copper color with a 1-2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a small cap that lingers. Good soapy lacing clings to the glass. Aromas of caramel, biscuit, grape, pepper, apple, toast, clove, earth, herbal, and yeast spiciness. Pretty nice aromas with decent complexity and balance. Taste of caramel, toffee, molasses, grape, apple, earth, herbal, pepper, biscuit, toast, clove, and light yeast spices. Lingering notes of light fruits, caramel, molasses, toffee, toast, and light yeast spices on the finish. Ok balance, but it isn’t the flavors I was expecting at all. Slight cloying sweetness and tang on the finish, but not too bad. Light carbonation and medium body; with a fairly slick and creamy mouthfeel that is ok. No alcohol presence after the finish as expected. Overall this is a solid beer. Certainly not a saison in my experience, but it was still quite enjoyable for what is was. Solid flavor balance and complexity; and very easy to drink.

Pours a murky, muddy, brown color with a positively voluminous khaki head, which isn't surprising considering the pronounced hiss that was emitted when I openend the bottle. The aroma is sweet and caramelly with a hint of apple and that distinctive Belgian yeast character. Upon first taste, one can't help but be struck by the immense carbonation that overshadows most everything else. I'm all for effervescent carbonation, but this was just about as much as I could take. Once the initial prickly onslaught subsides, a malty sweetness sets in tasting of brown sugar, raisins, and caramel. Some apple lurks amidst the malt flavor as well, but not terribly prominently. A slight metallic twinge lingers in the finish. I must admit I'm not quite sure what to think of this saison, and if given a blind tasting, I doubt that I would have identified it as a saison at all, carbonation notwithstanding. Saison De Silly is not a bad beer, but the chasm between the malty base and the intense carbonation is not sufficiently married by anything else in between. It comes off as somewhat schizophrenic, with strong but disparate elements that never achieve a unified whole. It's drinkable, flavorful, and intriguing, but not something I would seek out to enjoy.

+1 to LordWoolley. Insanely complex and well-balanced beer for 5% ABV. Don't let a preconceived, anachronistic notion of what a "saison should be" ruin or cause you to bypass a fantastic experience. World-class beer that will actually help expand your understanding of the style and its development. To suggest that a beer that is probably very close to historical saisons (the low to moderate ABV, malty, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink-into-the-wort ones brewed on farms for field hands) isn't true to the style because it's not like uber-dry, high ABV, hyper-flocculated products lke Saison DuPont or Tank 7 (cough, cough)? Therein lies madness.

A - Poured out a dark amber color with a two-finger, tan head of bubbly foam. It left thin rings of lace on the glass.
S - It smelled of dark fruits and some yeasty notes.
T - It tasted of sweet caramel, dried dark fruits and some apple. Some strong maltiness.
M - It was crisp, sharp and fairly smooth. A light to medium bodied ale with a dry finish.
O - This is an okay saison. Darker than most with a fairly malty presence. It's not bad, but not what most of us want in a saison.
