L- Quite a dark chestnut brown, pours with minor sediment and 3mm off-white head that later forms copious lacing on the way down.
S- Given it's look I'm surprised how mild it's smell it. My wife concludes the same, unusual her sense of smell is great. I can't add to that I taste/review here 'blind' to any pre-reading for clues + cues.
T- Immediately pretty meaty on the tongue, a welcome surprise. Comes with a solid lick of ABV% on the tongue and palate, something I don't object to unless it's obscuring too much else. It has a liquorish deep-fruit note to it too.
F- This is my first beer of the day so my palate is fresh, but even then this is a belter on the ABV% facet for an 8% beer. It's quite a deep+'roasty' feel... it would make a great slow-sipping winter-warmer.
O- Different for at least one thing for 'a mere 8%ABV' that aspect broadcasts it's presence in the way a 11 or even 12% can. This egregious expression of ABV% might turn off some who might say 'If it were *really* good then it wouldnt have to be quite so blunt about it' - but frankly it's a cold day and this is working for me.

Bottle consumed at Dulle Griet in Ghent. On to the beer:

Not much on top of this one. The color is toasted orange, and around the glass little lace is given. The aroma smells of toffee syrup and dark bread. A sweet tasting beer, almost on the verge of becoming cloying. It starts with sugar syrup with dark bread. A fruitiness most resemblant to apricot hits. With time, the sweetness does die out some. It's medium bodied with a slight stick and low carbonation.

Solid dark ale. Given the competition of the Belgian market, it's going to get missed, but worth a try.

Look: Brownish red almost like a blood orange in color. 1/2 inch tan foamy head with good retention and some lace

Smell: Very strong notes of raisins and dates. Bready yeast and some biscuit malts

Taste: Subtle raisin and dates and other dark fruits are the first thing I taste. It has a very subtle sweetness to it which I really like

Mouthfeel: Medium body and medium to high carbonation. Has a bit of a buttery feel to it

Overall: I really like this brune. The only slight knock that I have is the flavor isnt as strong as I would like it to be

Pours a dark amber honey color with no head. Very random small spots of lacing on the drink down. Smells of plums, raisins, figs, dates, and honey. Very sweet and inviting. Tastes of dark fruits, honey, sweet malt. There is a weird metallic aftertaste on this beer. Very carbonated and bubbly in the mouth. Crisp and clean feeling. Overall, a decent BSDA but nothing too outstanding. I wouldn't recommend this one.

Dark amber color, very brassy. Grossly sweet nose with alcohol. Strong smell of yeast and fruit macerated in the style of McChouffe or MacBen . Mouth a little weak in flavor despite this side pastor / yeasty. Also made me think a lot of Mac Ben Scotch Ale Brewery Silly who just picked up this beer in its range, evidence that the original recipe has not been preserved, which is very damaging, and is undoubtedly disappointment.

A: Dark, cloudy orange with an edge of bubbles and scant lacing.
S: Aroma of freshly baked bread and orange peel.
T: Flavor of sour apples and citrus, a surprising taste for the style.
M: Average body.
D: An interesting beer, but not great - lacks complexity, and short on roasted malts.

330 ml bottle purchased at John's Grocery in Iowa City.

Solid pour. Hazy amber with a spotty white head that quickly settles down into a little white cap.

Smells super fruity. Fruits of the foresty. Minced meat. Raisins and dates and prunes all covered in a sugary syrup. The yeast is present in a very firm spice that's not quite like anything I've ever smelted in a beer. It's like black pepper but there's a little hint of natural gas to it. Strange, but not really bad.

Tastes clean and solid--maybe I'm drinking it a little too cold. The syrupy, dully sweet fruits dominate the beginning but the strange spice takes over about halfway through and rides things out to the end. The afertaste is sweeter, more towards the fruity side. The natural gas flavor only comes up in your burps.

A: Pours a murky amber that cannot be seen through. Off-white head that recedes quickly, but leaves a nice lacing as I drink.

S: Smells fruity, dark fruit, plum and raisin. Fresh baked biscuits with a little spice.

T: Bigger flavor than I anticipated. Well rounded with highs of that plum I smelled. Finishes of with a caramel and vanilla mix that bow out to a final punch of hops and alcohol to balance it all.

M: A little under-carbonated for me. I was hoping for a little more scratch, and not as much syrup.

D: A nice way to finish off the night. Warming.

Bottle at Smokeless Joe in Toronto. Was told it was like a better version of Leffe Brune, so there's the context for this review. In short -- I like Leffe Brune a lot better.

This one poured an attractive, mildly cloudy golden brown into a goblet-style glass (can't remember the logo). Decent head, good lacing throughout. Aroma is quite pleasant--good so far--with some sweeter spices, dark fruits, a bit of brown sugar, and cake-like malt. Most of the aromas carry somewhat into the flavour, but I found the taste in general to be overwhelmingly sweet, with sugary, cakey malts dominating everything else. Some odd metallic notes when first poured as well, although they did fade as it warmed. A little bit of spice makes its way out of the malt to add some character, but I still think this one is a little unbalanced.

I recently discovered that I like Leffe Blonde better than Brune, and I wonder if I should have gone for the Double Enghien Blonde as well (which Smokeless also had). Maybe next time!
