A - Poured out a hazy, burgundy color with a one-finger, tan head of foam. It left some sudsy trails of lace on the glass.

S - It smelled earthy and malty with notes of peat.

T - It tasted of dried fruits with notes of plum and raisin. It had a nice malty taste with an earthy spiciness.

M - It was crisp, sharp and smooth. A medium bodied ale with a dry finish.

O - This is a very nice scotch ale. Interesting to put a Belgian spin on the style.

750ml bottle - poured a bit more than half, re-corked the rest for tomorrow.

pours a cloudy brown/red colour. quite a bit of nice light tan/off-white head - also decent lacing for a while.

smell was really intriguing. sour and sweet - had wine, fruit, a hint of alcohol.

taste was awesome - sweet/fruity, berries, malt, alcohol, and a bitter caramel aftertaste. obviously heavy but still well balanced, great carbonation, and good drinkability. love when i get my hands on a scotch silly, have really enjoyed it every time i've tried it. overall just a great scotch ale, easily one of my favorites to date.

Very dark red-brown, slightly cloudy, with medium pale tan head soon thinning to foamy ring and bubbles.

Aroma is caramelised brown bread, fermented prunes, hint of chocolate. Overall, it's very nice, fairly well-rounded with a little complexity and a definite overall wee-heavy element to the character.

Taste is also very nice, well-rounded, firm, with a little complexity. Sweet burnt raisins and prunes, spicy woodiness, general, nicely complex and integrated fruity-earthy-woody character, with somewhat of a fortified-wine quality and light toastiness. It is very drinkable and enjoyable.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a Sam Adams pint.

A: Pours a translucent, dark copper color with one finger of khaki head. Good retention and lace.

S: Sweet malt, caramel and a little fruit.

T: Light, sweet caramel, a little bit of cola. Simple and straightforward, but quite tasty. Alcohol totally hidden.

M: A bit thin but not bad, quite smooth and a little syrupy.

O: I like this. Calm, quiet, and tasty. I would gladly buy this again.

A- Pours a dark brown color w/ a one finger cocoa head. Decent carbonation, and great lacing. This beer is really murky looking, almost like a muddy swamp. All in all a great looking beer.

S- Yeast, caramel malt, some muted fruit. Maybe a hint of raisins or figs as well. The only thing that keeps this from being a 4.5 is the nose isn't quite as strong as I'd like. Otherwise, really nice.

T- Pretty close to the nose on this brew. No hint of the 8% ABV at all, even in the aftertaste. Nice, but not quite world class.

M- Nice and chewy, dry aftertaste/feel as well. Nothing interesting/spectacular here.

O- Nice beer, but not one I would constantly seek out. Still, a solid brew that's worth trying if you haven't yet.

Does this cap say "13/03/10"? If so, I guess this has been sitting around for awhile. Seems only the look suffered.

First striking characteristic is a vinous (or sherry), almost vinegary aroma (age?). Underlying malt fairly bold.

Backing up, the head isn't of a "typical" voluminous Belgian variety - it's actually in line with the style, 1/2", then collar. Forgot this was probably bottle-conditioned - the liquid a murky deep maroon with fine, floaty specks.

Pretty excellent balance and presence of soft, smooth caramel and juicy fruity esters - definitely a Belgian yeast involved here. The flavor (and aroma) of musty cherry skins, or better yet a cherry cough drop dominates for the most part. Very tasty.

Alcohol feel comes across in a late, delicate liqueur-warmth, herbal scent.

It's a Belgian Scotch ale - huh- and it's way better than the lot of domestic versions - ha!

Had a bottle of this at the Beer bistro a while back and just rediscovered my tasting notes.

A thick head off white head crowns the dark murky body. Minimal lacing supports ok retention.

The nose is strong on malt notes; burnt brown sugar, as one would expect. Some more unusual spicy notes caramel, cinnamon; possibly from the yeast.

A strong chewy malt center, juicy at times. Some of the flavours are reminiscent of berries. Toasty malt rounds out the palate lingering on into the finish. Next to no trace of hops. The body is oily and vicious with a medium low carbonation.

I poured this 330 ml bottle into a nonic pint glass. Brewed on 04/11/11 (date code on the cap: that's a first).

A: murky reddish brown color, 2-finger head falls into a thick cap with decent lacing.

S: butter toffee, sweetbread malt, ripe dark fruit, roasted nuts.

T: some spice, roasted grain, a bit of smokiness, ripened dark fruit, nuts, vanilla, and a bit of oak, the finish is lightly smoky with a bit of tea leaf hop.

M: medium-bodied, syrupy texture, low carbonation.

O: good, but not great.

330 ml bottle, from Voldby Købmandsgård, Denmark. ABV is 8.0%. Amber to copper colour, slightly hazy, moderate off-white head. Sweetish aroma of malts, toffee and caramel, hints of fruit and oak, quite nice. Very sweet flavour, loads of caramel, hints of oak and dark fruits, moderate hops in the finish. Worth sampling, but not for daily indulgence.

A- Pours a murky reddish color with a nice off white head. Head was pretty huge and then capped off the top of the brew. Not too much lacing here.

S- A bit of caramel malts, apples and a bit of yeast. Overall, pretty tame.

T- Quite a bit of malt sweetness. An Earthy taste as well along with some medicine type taste. Not really digging this at all.

M- Medium in body and lighter in carbonation.

D- No thanks on this one. I had a hard time with this one. Wife and I couldn't finish this one of at all.

Another product that I got thanks to www.quebecbiere.info private import in Québec for Belgian beers !

There is no sign of a bottling date on this beer but I suspect it's around mid 2009. I've been holding on to a few Scotch Silly beers for over a year now so...do the math!
I served it in an official Scoth Silly glasse witch is actualy in a tulip form. I get a shady brownish color with red tints and a loose white head...fades away pretty fast. Signs of heavy carbonation as well..Nice appearance overall.

the smell is not to pronounced, kinda weird for this type of beer. I get a little Praline and Malt notes. I can also smell that 8 % ABV along with brown sugar and a spices like cardamome.
Give it a couple swerles and let the aromas out and along with the gas !

The taste starts off with a kick of caramel Malt and sugar, becomes quite watery on the palate, I kinda feel like its missing something, and then finishes dry with a rusty metalic taste. Last time I had one of those, was a couple of months ago and I remember having alot more fun with this beer than I am tonight.
Its quite sweet and heavy on the carbonation so having only one after a meal is just fine or else your gonna feel pretty full and heavy.
Overall its a nice beer, nice brewery and who doesn't like Scoth Ales ??

Mahogany color with a thin off-white head.

Aromas of caramel/ toffee, nuts, milk chocolate.

Nutty caramel malty taste - like a Wee Heavy with a Belgian yeast. Yum for cold weather.

medium-full body, creamy/ soft mouth feel and finishes slightly dark-malty sweet with a dusting of faint hop bitterness that keeps it from cloying too much.

Type: 330ml bottle

Poured into snifter giving a nice 2-finger head, reducing to a frothy 1-finger head with royal lacing. Color is cloudy deep burgundy. Aroma of very sweet malts, spiced raisin and dried fig fruit, hints of toffee and caramel. Taste of sweet caramel-like malt, toffee, wrapped up with a very Belgian character. I am no expert at Belgians, but this screams Belgian. Leaves a very sweet aftertaste. Drinks like a 6%, and not an 8%. Very enjoyable brew, but would rather attach this beer to one season out of the year

A- Appearance is a dark red, with a thin toffee head to it. Retention is below average but the lacing is rather nice.
S- Smell is very caramelly malty. There are hints of spice as well.
T- Toasted malt, hints of caramel. Same vague fruityness. Also the vaguest of smokyness in the finish.
M- Slightly fuller than average, as well as above average carbonation for a scotch ale.
D- All in all a good though not great wee heavy. Something just seems slightly lacking about it.

Aromas is all caramel malts. Extremely sweet with some floral and herbal hints, but this is totally over-powered by the maltiness.

The taste is not great. I almost can't finish it, because it is way too sweet. As it warms, it actually gets worse. Flavor is mostly nasty butterscotch and caramel with some brown sugar mixed in. This brew could benefit from some roasted malts or peat character and an increase in hop additions.

Mouthfeel is okay, adequate for the category, but the taste is way too sweet and I will not be drinking this again.

Light tan creamish colored head. Thin head remains, but good overall cover and excellent lacing on the glass. darker brown color with light ruby highlights. Has raisiny, plummish smell, but lighter aroma to have darker fruit smells. Smells fruitier more than anything, no hop or malt present. Moderate carbonation. Very dark sweet taste in beginning of drink, actually very metallic in middle and finish of drink. Alcohol and dryness present in finish. Finish nice in that it fades. Raisiny shows through on the swallow and finish, definitely present in long term finish. Overall pretty good, first encounter with a beer that had that super metallicy taste present. I think I kind of like it...maybe.

Reviewed from notes.

Pours a moderate caramel brown with a tint of red. Little bit of a light tan head. Nose brings some toffee, caramel, a bit of dark fruits, and some tart green apple. Taste is a lot of toffee without too much complexity. Hints of dates and green apple. Feel is light to medium with low carbonation. Very strange beer and I don't think the idea really carries, at least with this beer.

Brown 330ml bottle, best before 6th March 2010, reviewed while drinking it, 12th Sept 2010, some 6 months after its best by date.

Poured into a Gordon Finest Gold thistle shaped glass (well it is a Scotch).

Deep tanned head on top of a dark red/brown body, looks good in the thistle glass. Lacing held on well to the glass as the head faded.

Sweet malt molasses fill the nose, almost treacle in smell, lets say toffee apple aromas. As the beer warmed I detected some smouldering woodlike smells, Christmas Winter Warmer style.

The taste is very simular to the smell, sweet and treacle like in flavour, but not a sickly over sweetness. A fireside warmth sort of beer.

Very drinkable for 8% ABV, alcohol is well hidden in the rich body, one of the better Belgian Scottish styled beers.

After reading other reviews, I can only imagine that I got a bottle from a bad batch, is that possible? The one I had was not nearly as memorable as other Scotch Ales that I have enjoyed, namely Skullsplitter.

A - Best part of this beer. Very alluring deep copper color. Quite lovely to be honest. 1" head that held composition throughout most of the serving despite the fact that it retracted to about 1/4" by the time I was done

S - Not too bad, but not overly incredible. Honey smell laced with a hint of roasted caramel

T - This is why I think I got a bad beer - it tasted tinny and flat. The tastes that other reviewers found, I did not. Kinda like a flat cola taste.

M - Low carbonation, little heavy-ish, but not overly heavy.

I will likely try several other scotch ales before I try this one again, but since I am convinced that this was just "a bad one", I feel compelled to give it another shot sometime.

Poured from the bottle into a chalice and sampled on 22 August 2010 at the Abbey of Vlierbeek in Kessel-Lo, Belgium.
The Scotch Silly has a sweet aroma and amber body. I think the experience in which one consumes a beer probably has a lot to do with how that beer tastes, appears, and is enjoyed. I drank this beer sitting on the terrace of an abbey cafe. It is quintessentially Belgian. Upon arrival, it starts raining, the patrons on the patio move inside, and as soon as the rain stops (it is Belgium after all) most of the people have moved back outside and the staff are wiping down the patio chairs and tables. This beer captures so much of what Belgium means to me - the beer is simple, enjoyable, straightforward, and the beer seems to improve as it warms.

Overall this beer was very good. After pouring, it retains 1/4" of light cream foam which quickly disappears. The amber color of this beer has hints of ruby and scarlet. It has a light nutty taste with a bland cinnamon aftertaste, and is mildly carbonated. As the beer warms, I get more anise and am able to taste more of the alcohol.

I finally got around to trying Scotch Silly, purchased a bottle at Three Seas Liquors in Stamford.

Appearance is a dark amber color with a one finger head.
The smell includes malt, sweet pecans, molasses, a strong aroma in general. Upon taking a couple sips, there is more of that overall sweetness going on, along with flavors of scotch. Mouthfeel is rich with all these different strong flavors with a bitter aftertaste. Drinkability is average with Scotch Silly, something that I would have 1 of and pair with a dessert.

Pours a hazy dark orange-ish copper color, with a light tan head. In the aroma, roasty malt and butterscotch. In the taste, butterscotch and sweet maltiness. A smooth and medium bodied mouthfeel, with a dry, sticky roasty malt in the aftertaste. Nice blend of flavors.

11.2 oz bottle poured as dark rich red color in my Unibroue tulip with a inch and a half of dense head that dissipates into a few large bubbles and a thin layer of thick head. Thick lacing sticking to the sides of the glass. Aroma is dark fruit and malt with a slight alcohol tinge on the finish. Flavor is sweet, rich, robust and all kinds of malt. Also kinda get a tinge of mint in the finish. Body is thick and smooth with a slightly resinous finish that doesn't linger long. This is a nice scotch ale, not over the top in the sweetness department which seems to be the common trend. Don't really want more than one in a row, but definitely enjoy the one I do/will have.
