a: Ruby orange with lots of sediment floating around. Superchunky. Small tan yellow head.

s: Sweet butterscotch and caramel.

t: Super sugary sweet! A blast of brown sugar smacks you in the face. Nice n' malty. There is an awesome dark fruity flavor to this that goes well with the slight cough syrup like burn. Small but significant hop twang.

mf/d: The beer has a carbonated feel, light a sprite. It's kinda sticky also. The sweetness may start to get to you after one of these but this is a very fun brew.

This beer pours a massive off white head atop it's dark reddish amber clear liquid. The head melts slowly to a nice covering of sticky lacing.

Aroma doesn't have as much of a smokey character as I would expect from a Scotch ale but there is a nice toasted sweet amber malt aroma that yields slowly to alcohol.

Taste is where this beer shines. The malts are sugary sweet yet not cloying and the smokey toastiness comes through very nicely as you swallow. Finish is mostly a warming alcohol comfort.

Very nice Scotch Ale. I wish I had picked up more.

Pours a dark chocolate with an incredible head that dissipates into fine lacing. Smell is a deep malt with molasses notes, some smoke and a hint of hops. Taste is slightly sweet, but not cloying..oddly I get a sense of roses! This brew gives a smooth, almost velvet mouthfeel..finishes sweet, with JUST a hint of hops. Wow, this is 8 abv? Smoothness belies this. Excellent on the drinkability scale.

Very dark red-brown, slightly cloudy, with medium pale tan head soon thinning to foamy ring and bubbles.

Aroma is caramelised brown bread, fermented prunes, hint of chocolate. Overall, it's very nice, fairly well-rounded with a little complexity and a definite overall wee-heavy element to the character.

Taste is also very nice, well-rounded, firm, with a little complexity. Sweet burnt raisins and prunes, spicy woodiness, general, nicely complex and integrated fruity-earthy-woody character, with somewhat of a fortified-wine quality and light toastiness. It is very drinkable and enjoyable.

Enjoyed at The Grille Next Door in Haverhill, MA, this stuff shows a rosey brown color with a fair off-white head and very little sign of lacing. It gives off a malty Moxie and maple sugar smell with lemony accents. I like it. The flavor says thick vanilla and candy apple with Dr. Pepper ideas and a little whiskey to boot! It's a medium-plus bodied brew, near syrupy but fair carbonation makes it plenty drinkable considering the ABV. Very enjoyable.

Vision of Amber, lacks lacing, good carbonation. Lack of retention.

Smells very good for a scotch ale. Muggy sweet, molasses, deep earthen carmel. Spicy hazlenut. Light clove nature. Bubblegum off the front but hidden.

Oh that scotch ale character. It comes off perfect in the beginning. Varmel, molasses, peaty sweetness, Brown sugar, nutty, and finishes clove and bubblegum. The end is unbelievable Belgian while the middle is American. It's two worlds in one.

Medium to full bodied, crisp, a bit too crisp, and a dry clove finish. Delightful.

hazy peach brown; tiny head which builds then dissipates. nothing special here although i like the opaque color.... mysterious... 2nd pour from the big bottle yields a strong creamy, fluid head in my duvel tulip glass. maybe the variation is from 'breathing'??
smells sour, vinegar-y, fruity; like a sour. not like a 'wee heavy' as i undrstand it... the smell reminds me more of a belgian strong ale, a Gulden Draak, a quad, a dark fruit-type...
bitter sweet caramel malt taste, with slight dark fruit as it passes the tongue. a small bit of alcohol burns on the sides of the tongue. i think others used butterscotch as a descriptive and it also applies....
overall, it's interesting. i selected it because it was considered a 'wee heavy', one of my favorite styles. what i got was a large bottle which cost me $12.99 and i decided to try it and am okay with it. there is no real bitter after-taste, nothing lingering in the background after it's passed. not worth $13 but i suppose that's the price for variety. the old commercial standby chimay blue is less and i know what i'm getting there.... but it's a worthy snort. just not worth the $13....

Cold winter night, how 'bout a big scotch to get 'R done?

BIG frothy tan head bubbles up from a hazy and chewy (lots of yeasties that I swirled up) oaken pour. Lace is looking like tan marshmallow on the sides of the Corsendonk tulip.

Belgium yeast, caramel, dark fruit and malt dominate in the aroma. Ultra smooth quaff of sweet caramel malt. A pop o' hop in the finish help to balance it out well. Even a hint of anise, if not for the color, it would border on RIS.

A tasty find - just luv finding this lil' gems while out beer shopping.

A hazy dark amber/brown beer. Has a big creamy beige head and a little lace. The aroma starts with a strong sweet malty character with caramel and vanilla notes. This is carried on the wings of a discernable alcohol note. This beer has a lush mouthfeel with fig and raisin note swimming about in the sweet liquid. You catch a hint of the alcohol, previewed in the aroma, on the back of you throat in the finish. As the beer warms I found chocolate and licorice notes in the aroma and a hint of honey in the taste.

This is my first Scottish ale. This is a 330 ml bottle with an attractive green label. There is no freshness date. Pours a dark orange to brown with about 2 fingers of fluffy tan head that reduces to a thin layer only covering the top of the beer. Nice lace is left on the glass. The aroma is of toffee and malt. This is a medium bodied beer. The taste is of toffee and caramel, and you can really notice the alcohol. I really enjoyed this beer. This beer make me want to try more Scottish ales. It is a little to much alcohol to enjoy more then 1 or 2 of these.

Pours a clear mahogany color with a sticky yellow cream head that fades to just a dusting soon after the pour. The nose is full of yeasty smells, along with sugared, slightly sour dates, hints of licorice and some bubblegum. There's little wee heavy, in my opinion, in the aroma. The palate, though, is a different story, and the Belgian elements and the Scottish influence come into focus here. Some acidity first off and some brisk carbonation, followed by some rich, chocolatey and nutty malts combined with dark fruit esters. The finish turns sweet and shows some bubblegum and tropical fruit notes. Overall, this is a successful hybrid of Belgian and Scottish. It's interesting, tasty, and cohesive. Well done.

Had this on-tap at Novare Res at the beginning of the summer. Poured a nice, dark, ruby brown with a decent head and excellent lacing. Smelled on the lighter side, but with notes of butterscotch, grain, dates, and prune. Tasted sweet to start, but complex with sweet malt, some pie spice, rich flavors of ripe pears, prunes, and some more sharper spice on the finish. Very smooth. I've always found Belgian interpretations of Scotch ales to be very interesting and richly delicious, but to be drunk sparingly. This is one of the better ones.

Served on tap in a thisle glass.
Appearance-dark red color. small amount of head.
Smell-heavy notes of malt coming through.
Taste- wonderful earthy malt notes coming throug, small amount of alcohol on the finish.
Mouthfeel-quite pleasant.
Overall-great scotch ale, from Belgium of all places, a lot mellower than most scotch ales. I will be seeking this beer out again.

Pours a dark reddish brown with a huge tan head with heavy sustained lacing. Very very good looking beer. Big sweet malt aromas. Smells thick and malty as hell.

Tastes of strong caramel. Oak flavors like you would taste in aged port. Very nutty with a molasses finish. Big, full-bodied beer. Very nice Scotch ale.

The beer pours a dark amber color with a thick frothy offwhite head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is good. It has a nice malty scent that boasts of crystal and roasted malts along with a fruity yeast aroma; very nice. The taste is good. It has a wondeful malty flavor that goes down easy and finishes fruity with some yeasty notes. It's slightly dry in the finish with a warm aftertaste. The mouthfeel is good. It is a full bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a good beer, but it's nothing too great. It's a Scotch ale done Belgium style.

Brown 330ml bottle, best before 6th March 2010, reviewed while drinking it, 12th Sept 2010, some 6 months after its best by date.

Poured into a Gordon Finest Gold thistle shaped glass (well it is a Scotch).

Deep tanned head on top of a dark red/brown body, looks good in the thistle glass. Lacing held on well to the glass as the head faded.

Sweet malt molasses fill the nose, almost treacle in smell, lets say toffee apple aromas. As the beer warmed I detected some smouldering woodlike smells, Christmas Winter Warmer style.

The taste is very simular to the smell, sweet and treacle like in flavour, but not a sickly over sweetness. A fireside warmth sort of beer.

Very drinkable for 8% ABV, alcohol is well hidden in the rich body, one of the better Belgian Scottish styled beers.

This beer poured a medium dark amber color and formed a nice foamy off white head that was like a float and left some nice lace. A good deal of carbonation, usually accounting for the float look. The aroma was of caramel, spice and malt. The flavor was also of caramel and malt and was a bit sweet. The finish was a bit bitter. It hid it's alcohol content well. I rather enjoyed the beer, even it the body was a little lighter than expected and a tad sweeter than I prefer. Worth checking out in my opinon.

Scotch Silly pours a walnut brown with deep rose red center when held to the light and a frothy espresso head that settles to a thin cover and nice lacing.

A lovely aroma of ripe dried fruit with good malt character. Taste is an incredible balance of Scoth and Belgian ales. The body is that of a Scotch - full, nutty and with lasting cereals. Fills the mouth and leaves a clean finish of roasted fruit and malt.

Strong beer and made for sipping as an after dinner or dessert.

Had this on tap at Max's the other night. Never heard of this beer or the brewery and have to say I really enjoyed it.

The beer pours an amber brown color with hints of orange. The beer has a very dense creamy head with excellent lacing. The nose is pretty interesting, with sort of a dry maltiness, but interspersed with a sour/tart overlay. On the palate this beer is delicious. The beer is pretty sweet, but finishes dry. I get flavors if casaba melon and ranier cherries, and later as it warms up honey, butter and butterscotch. The beer has a very impressive light, creamy mouthfeel, and I have to say this beer is just entirely too drinkable. There's just enough hops to keep the sweetness from ever becoming cloying, and the 8% abv. is extremely well disguised. So drinkable.... I think I'll have another right now!

Very impressive...

First time for scotch ale. Nice brown ale color with creamy head with lacing galore ... poured from a lovely green bottle. Taste is real malty sweetness and the texture is nice and smooth. If this is typical Scottish ale, then I'm in! Made in Belgium though and tastes like a good tripel.

Goes down well while listening to the music of European improvisor Paul Dunmall on his sax or bagpipe. Also goes well while watching the Rangers play soccer in the Scottish Premier League. The Rangers have become (Team America) now having THREE Americans on board. Bocanegra, Maurice Edu, and my main man Alex Bedoya!! (Alex is the Future)

11.2ozer from Yankee Spirits, Sturbridge, MA.

Poured into a Rapscallion snifter, formed a nice sized honey-colored head, just about right, on top of a cloudy reddish brew. Pleasant aroma, with malt, hops and a tinge of alcohol, in order of decreasing intensity. Interesting taste, similar to what you would expect from a Scotch-style ale, but then this buttery flavor/feeling comes out and lurks about on your tongue. The expected warming after-effects are present, makes you want to tip the glass again, and soon.

Pours a hazy amber color that is topped by a tan head. The aroma is a malty, on the dry side, with notes of miso, and perhaps a faint musty character. Overall a fairly mellow nose on this one. The taste is sweet up front and finishes with a note that reminds me of tropical fruit. It is quite malty as well with perhaps a hint of sherry in the middle of the beer. As the beer warms up a bit I get notes of orange and spice cake. This is most definitely a Scottish inspired brew, though (thankfully for me) the Belgian brewer could not leave well enough alone, and allowed for some extra complexity that was contributed by the yeast strain. Appropriately the hop character of this beer is practically non-existant.

Pours a nice chesnut brown with a nice big fluffy/sticky head that settles into a creamy-like froth,aromas of dried fruit and caramel with a note of brown sugar.Taste is rich and full big caramel notes with some raisin and I pick up a candied sugarness in there letting u know it was made in Belgium.A very nice nightcap Scottish but with a Belgian flare,well done.

Pours a deep copper with a tan head, good retention and excellent lacing. Dark roasted malts and candi sugars with a faint currant-like fruitiness. Solid malty backbone with some plummy fruitiness creeping in. Light astringency in the finish. A bit of earthiness, light apple and musty funk. Excellent transposition of a Scotch ale a la Belgian-style.

This silly little beer pours out a very dark amber, light around the edges. Big, whipped-creamy thick head sticks around for a long time, never really goes away. Great color, awesome head, this is a pretty beer. The appearance is similar to some of my all-time favorites - it's a great look for a beer so it gets a bonus half point.

The smell is nice, but pretty subtle at first. I can smell the sweet and boozy malt bomb I expect from a scotch ale / wee heavy. I'm drinking straight out of the fridge so I imagine it will improve as it warms. Taste is intense and satisfying immediately. I didn't want to wait around for it to warm up a bit, and it turns out you really don't have to. Scotch Silly is obviously a very well made ale, very tasty and with a nice mouthfeel. It's sweet, but has a nice strong finish that makes it very drinkable. Purchased on a whim (read: I didn't remember it when I saw it at a store, didn't know the BA score), I don't regret it. I'd definitely get it again.
