11.2oz bottle poured into a tulip.

A: Medium dark caramel brown with hints of orange. Two finger off white head with semi tight bubbles. Good retention and lacing.

S: Caramel and apple. Sweet malts. Light hints of dark fruits. Almost imperceptible notes of peat with a very light touch of roast. Slight tart notes and a hint of wine.

T: Caramel, brown sugar, and sweet malts up front. Raisins and hints of figs. Very light notes of over ripe apples. Some peat and roast. Brown sugar, caramel, butterscotch, and maybe molasses mix with a growing apple flavor in the finish.

M: Medium light body. Sticky and smooth. Light carbonation.

O: A good beer. I'm not real familiar with the style, and it's not my favorite style by far. Pretty easy drinking beer that goes down a bit fast for 8%.

Poured from a 11.2 oz bottle into a conic pint glass in high elevation Libby, Mont. Reviewed live. No best-by date visible.

A- Finger and a half cream-colored head. Moderate retention, about a minute long. Leaves sticky lacing on the sides as it recedes. Ruby-mahogany colored body with middling clarity. Relatively attractive.

S- Interested to see how Belgians will do a Scotch beer. Roast malts, caramel, toffee, some very subtle dark fruits. Well formed scotch ale with a Belgian twist. Rich and roasty.

T- Sweet and dark. It actually tastes like a quad with richer roasted malts. Dark fruits, candi sugar, toffee and brown sugar. Kind of a knock out, surprisingly. Brandy and other dark alcohols make a presence.

M- Thin feel with subtle carbonation. Wet and craggy on the tongue.

O- Very interesting interpretation of the style. Very Belgian. I quite enjoyed this brew.

Pours out a hazy plum with a creeper of a head. The head stops at about an inch, bits of lace hang on for a bit.

The smell is sweet fruit heavy. A mild earth, yeast and soggy wood come in near the end.

Very sweet, almost like a fruity, under carbonated cherry soda up front. Earth and minerals are also noticed around the middle. Sweet aftertaste.

Not that great. An interesting Belgian twist on the style, but not good for more than a glass.

hazy peach brown; tiny head which builds then dissipates. nothing special here although i like the opaque color.... mysterious... 2nd pour from the big bottle yields a strong creamy, fluid head in my duvel tulip glass. maybe the variation is from 'breathing'??
smells sour, vinegar-y, fruity; like a sour. not like a 'wee heavy' as i undrstand it... the smell reminds me more of a belgian strong ale, a Gulden Draak, a quad, a dark fruit-type...
bitter sweet caramel malt taste, with slight dark fruit as it passes the tongue. a small bit of alcohol burns on the sides of the tongue. i think others used butterscotch as a descriptive and it also applies....
overall, it's interesting. i selected it because it was considered a 'wee heavy', one of my favorite styles. what i got was a large bottle which cost me $12.99 and i decided to try it and am okay with it. there is no real bitter after-taste, nothing lingering in the background after it's passed. not worth $13 but i suppose that's the price for variety. the old commercial standby chimay blue is less and i know what i'm getting there.... but it's a worthy snort. just not worth the $13....

Served in a Duvel tulip glass.

When I’m satisfied with what’s in the glass, I’m presented with quite a sight: Apparently there was an old-school music fest up in Scotland, and one of those patchouli-laden hippies got it into his pot-addled skull that skinny dipping in the moors was a good idea. More than that, he opened his bloodshot eyes whilst beneath the surface and surveyed his brackish surroundings from behind his wacky red-tinted glasses. Seriously, why the hell does anyone wear those damn things? They don’t block out any sun or UV rays or anything; they just make the world a painful shade of artificial rose, one made all the more painful when the glasses are removed and reality floods in in all its Technicolor glory. Our poor hippie may not get the chance to discover his mistake, however, ‘cause just above him has formed not an acid-provoked fever dragon, but a solid inch-thickness of ecru slate, equally lithe as permanent. Godspeed, starchild…

Old lady caramel dances with her breakfast grapefruit, currently going on four hours in the trash (nowhere near long enough to rot, but far from fresh and bright), up in my ‘strils. Something akin to rye toast smattered in moss enters in as well, rounding things out. I didn’t expect such stark simplicity here, for some reason, but that’s indeed what I’ve been presented with. Maybe the moss is reminiscent of Scottish thistle, and maybe I’m just stretching in order to forcibly connect a place with its prodigal style. Fuck it, at least I’m trying!

I guess my ‘strils are doin’ their job well today, ‘cause my tongue is corroborating the story above. At first, though, a sweet fruitiness pervades, but it’s vague enough to evade specificity, the lucky prick. We’ll get him next time, Dan-o. Then the mild grapefruit, buttery caramel, light moss, and toast come back for an encore, one of those curtain calls nobody chants for (much less sparked their lighter for) but happens anyway. Just get your cell out, record a bootleg, and hopefully make up some of the dough you threw down for this shit in hopes of expediting the drop of those lacies next to you. Might as well get something out of it, she’s been knockin’ back bottle of O’Doul’s Amber all night and fumbling with her WWJD bracelet. Sumbitch. Then comes something new, something I remember from that weird guy at Cortland and Ashland, namely a strong sense of drying cardboard. That’s all there is in the end: Just like that raving derelict, all you’re left with is an old box and funny looks.

While waiting for this sad corrugated mess to leave, it’s clear this stuff was built to last. It’s firm in your grill, kinda thick wit’ it without going too far into Mo’Nique territory, and doesn’t have a bubbly enough personality for morning radio but can get along well enough at the DMV. Nah, that’s being mean, substitute the Social Security office there, those chicks at least feign smiles at times. When all is said and done, it’s not dry outside, but the umbrella sure as hell ain’t necessary, just a light sweatshirt. No hood. Fuck your hoodies, skatetrash: it’s only water, not acid waiting to dissolve that shitty dyejob you never shoulda let your flaky fingerbang fan do to you. Shit, those pants are too tight, even for a rail like her. Suspicious.

From the 330 ml. bottle. Sampled on February 28, 2013.

It has a handsome looking amber mahogany pour with a tan head that settles to a ring quickly.

There is a lot of aroma here with sweet caramel and darker malts, yeast, a hint of booze, which is more likely the hops they used.

The body is medium and smooth.

The malts are upfront no question in the taste with a butterscotch or maybe more likely buttery taste followed by a moderate bitterness that doesn't linger all that much. This is a nice take on the style.

750 mL bottle pours a hazed, dark copper color with a light cap of tan head with a gentle pour. The bottle foamed up and over the lip of the bottle upon opening…probably explains the haziness too.

Nose is uber-fruity with tons of strawberries, raisins and plums. Brown sugar, licorice and cinnamon. Interesting blend of aromas not usually found in a Wee Heavy, smells much more like a BSDA or maybe even a Quad.

Fruitiness continues in the flavor and combines with a brown bread yeastiness that makes this very un-Scotch Ale-esque. There does seem to be plenty of caramel and even a touch of peat in here but is overshadowed by the yeast presence. I want mad smoke, peat, chocolate and sugar flavors in my Wee Heavy. This delivers on the carmely/sugar aspect, but fails on the other three. Mouthfeel is good, the carbonation fine and the beer slick. Unfortunately, the beer seems to fall short of the richness and malt complexity a good BSDA comes with and does not fare well against other great Scotch Ales due to the lack of smoke/peat/chocolate. Its not bad, I mean...I wont have trouble finishing this 750, but certainly not something I would come back to again for the price.

About a finger and half of head on a copper colored body.
The aroma is alcohol and wet grains.
The taste is highly sweet with a short finish. The level of sweetness took me by surprise.
A sticky texture with moderate carbonation and medium body.
I can’t get over how sweet it is…

Deep red-brown colour, ring of white head, light lace as well. Smell is of sweet caramel and malt, some darker sugars and dark fruits pick up as well as this warms, light undertones of belgian yeast, comes together quite nicely. Taste is a mix of sweet malt with caramel and toffee, dark fruits soaked in alcohol, some sugary sweetness before finishing quite belgian with a yeasty aftertaste. Medium carbonation, med-full body, lightly syrupy at parts. While nothing about this beer jumps out as excellent its still quite nice and fairly drinkable.

Cap date reads 07/02/2010 (technically, it reads '02/07/2010'); probably a Best Before date. So, good luck to me on this one. 330ml bottle poured into an Orval glass.

It poured really syrupy. Cloudy mahogany color with almost no head. It sure LOOKS past its prime.

Malty textures in the nose include browned apple, raisin, papery oxidation, light caramel (Turbinado sugar), brine, and clove. I'm having mixed feelings on whether or not it's suppose to have these aromas. It's not offensive, per se.

Drinks malty sweet with toffee, raisin, and brown sugar notes, very much like a Scotch ale. Oxidation notes aren't clashing here, for the style, but this is probably a posthumous bottle. Yeasty notes are still heavy and playful, even if a bit old. Has a briny salt caramel note that pairs with the nuttiness. Dark fruits taste muddled and drenched. I can pick out some lingering cherry and leather and even a hint of aged hops. This beer has held up better than I would have anticipated.

Very full-bodied for a Wee Heavy, with a thickening syrupy feel. Glossy in appearance and felt that way on the tongue. The ghost of the carbonation still spooks me just a bit on the swallow.

Wanted a fresher bottle, but I thought it might keep okay. And, this was the only bottle available to me in my area. So, here's to this experience! Skoals!
