12oz brown bottle with a freshness date.

LOOK: A shade away from full on black, tight tiny bubbled lace with great retention

SMELL: Brown malt, figgy, chicory, coffee, cocoa powder, dried grass, bread crust, faint brown sugar

TASTE: Creamy, silky smooth, mild roast, coffee, dark chocolate, hay, bread crust, burnt raisins, modest hopping, faint fruitiness.

All in all a good brew, not one attribute jumped out in front and everything seems to mesh well. Worth a go especially if you like maltier beers.

A: This beer pours a very dark roasted color with a 1 1/2 inch soapy, creme-colored head that leaves some good lacing.

S: Strong smell of dark fruit and chocolate which is blended with roasted malts and oats.

T: I get a dark fruit right off the bat like cherry or plum, followed by dark chocolate notes and oats. Flavor finishes with a dry-yeast character.

M: Very sweet, yet a slightly tart aftertaste. Full bodied with bountiful amounts of roasted malt flavors.

O: I have had a lot of oatmeal stouts, but this is my first oatmeal porter. Kind of similar to a stout, but has some sour characteristics which makes it unique. Love Widmer Brothers beers and this was a real treat for me to try. Keep them coming boys!

22oz bottle dated February 2012 that I picked up for $1.79, not bad. Standard black-brown appearance, filmy head. Smells good, oaty, with a sort of sweet aroma like a dessert that I cannot place> .Flavor is a touch of chocolate followed by that sweetness that is good but hard to place. Overall this is not too bad but not something I will re-visit.

Bottled 2/14/12.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to an oily film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, toasted oats, and some unsweetened cocoa aromas. There is a distinct butter aroma that comes out as the beer warms. Taste is much the same with some buttery and slight dark fruit flavors on the finish. There is a mild roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty average beer with a weird buttery flavor that is probably not supposed to be happening.

12 oz. bottle poured into a New Belgium snifter.

A: One-finger khaki head of dense, tight foam that slowly becomes almost solid lace across the surface. Dark brown. Very opaque, but not solid.

S: Roasted, almost burnt malts, dark chocolate, lightly burnt caramels.

T: More dark caramel and bits of 50% chocolate lacking pronounced bitterness than the nose suggests. Oats appear in the back end to suggest a rather dense, grainy bread. Hints of light roast coffee slide into cocoa. Flavors are on the lighter, softer side rather than being a saturated taste bomb. Just enough neutral / grassy hops appear in the back end to balance.

M: Surprisingly fizzy with a lighter structure than expected. Creamy on the palette. Pretty short, clean, rather dry finish thanks to the hops. Flavors are well-integrated.

O: Definitely a porter, not a mis-named stout. If drinking as a single, end-of-day beverage, it might not pack enough volume of flavor to satisfy. Would pair well with items normally associated with medium dark to milk chocolate that would be dominated by a heavier brew. Oatmeal adds polish and malts to compliment the dark sugars nicely. Enjoyable, but if I started drinking this on a regular basis, I think I would keep wanting just a little bit more from it.

Poured from a bit above the glass gives this porter a big light brown head above a clear very dark burnt amber colored beer.

The aroma is dark roasted malts with dark fruits likes prunes and a light hint of coffee coming through.

Dark roasted fruit taste with oatmeal and and roasted malts coming through as well.

A medium bodied beer with a lasting dry roasted aftertaste.

Decent enough beer well worth a try if you are into Porters, Stouts, and the like.

A: Pours a deep brown with a medium off-white head, light lace.

S: Coffee, sweet oatmeal, coconut, roast.

T: Softly roasted malt, dark malt flavours, hint of oatmeal.

M: Light-bodied, creamy, crisp carbonation.

O: A solid porter beer, not real complex, but drinkable for sure, worth a pickup on the cheap.
