Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a tulip glass.

A: Slightly hazy, dark amber color with no foam head. lacing remains on the glass.

S: Caramel and fruit balance each other, with some savory on the side. Faint vanilla is suggested. It smells like a baked good prepared with teriyaki sauce. No alcohol is detected.

T: Begins off-dry, with toasty crystal malt that turns acidic. Estery fruit is present in the middle, as is a transient whiff of weak smoke. The finish tastes of burnt/ashy roasted grain and moderate bitterness. Spirituous flavors peak in the middle, but linger with the bitterness of the finish.

M: Medium viscosity, harshly acidic on the palate and in the throat, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This big scotch ale lacks the smoothness required of such a sipping beer. If acidity was not so out of control at times, it would impress. As it is, authentic malt-derived flavors are tossed about and sent fleeing by the scathing carbonic acid that sticks in the throat. It also struggles with style identity a bit, easily mistakable for a doppelbock or conservative quad in lieu of a wee heavy.

T: Deep raisin/prune flavor, caramelized malts, mild hop flavor, mild peat/smokiness.

M: Body is medium-low, carbonation is moderate.

O: This is a great Scotch ale, it is very pleasant and easy drinking.

Starting off by saying I think it might be a bad bottle. The beer poured out as a muddy brown color with a quick fading cream colored head on top. The smell of the beer is funky... It should be sweet and malty, smells like it was aged in oak or something. Just too funky for a Scotch Ale in my opinion. The taste is tart, very sour off the first sip. The finish is more of the malty scotch ale shining through. The mouthfeel is decent, a little thin for the style and some sharp carbonation. Overall this beer would probably be good I just think something got infected here. Would be willing to try it again in the future with hopes of a better outcome.

The bottle version of this brew Isn't quite as stellar as the tap version (which I gave a 4.6). It's a beautiful pour into a snifter. Golden clean viscous motor oil. The aroma is really nice, moist zucchini bread, cookie dough, and a workaday flour malt.

In the mouth the high alcohol gives a fruity zip to the sweet malts. And the hop bitterness pulls it further ceiling-ward. There's a metallic tartness that I wish were less bright. Middle to high carbonation is somewhat of a drawback, for what otherwise would have been simple cream.

Still my favorite Scotch ale of all time.

thanks to MaltyLareau for this nice extra! Thanks dave!

poured into snifter.

Appearance: dark brown to light black bodied beer with a deep red hue when held up to light. A short lived white head that drops to a thin ring with some spotty lacing.

Smell: smells just like a Wee Heavy should! Big malty dark fruits and smoke! Earthy peat moss notes. The beers' nose has been flawlessly executed!

Taste: Really big malty dark fruits mixing immediately with a boozey kick. Prunes, raisins, and figs, leather, light smoke, peat moss, earthy notes, and red apples. Fairely similiar to the nose.

Mouthfeel: medium bodied beer with moderate carbonation. Nice crisply carbonated beer.

Overall: This is a fine example of a Wee Heavy beer. Its very traditional and a solid beer all around! This is probably the best beer that I have drank from Lake Louie, its gotta be thier standout beer that they brew.
