On tap at the Deepwater.
Pitch black, a thin head that quickly dissipates to about nothing.
Smells like one of those Andes mints, with roasted coffee. Really a rich smell.
Wow, real mint in the taste, followed by coffee, a bit of dark chocolate and a bit of charred wood. Mint lingers in the aftertaste. Unique and interesting.
Mouthfeel smooth, medium carbonation.
This is a treat I'll be looking forward to again. A nice surprise from South Shore. Given the mint and the heaviness, one beer was about right. If you like these kinds of things, it's worth seeking out.

From Notes:
Appearance is a nice black but with a little too much head. The nose is very inviting with wonderful mint and coffee smells. Unfortunately taste is just too much peppermint, it overwhelms everything none of the nice malt smells come through at all.

Appearance is pretty good, very dark color with no real head or lacing of notes. Smell and taste are a bit better but pretty straight forward. Its dry coffee malt mixed with an afterdinner mint type flavor. Mouthfeel is medium in body and low on carbonation. Drinkability is average.

On tap at The Happy Gnome.
Nice dark amber (almost black) with a nice tan head that sticks around a little bit, but laces well.
aroma's are of coffee, but you have to search for it around the mint, great nose.
taste is much of the same, at first you get the mint but then the roasted coffee and chocolate malts come through.
good chewy mouthfeel, although a little thin for a stout, this is a very bold beer, and almost sickening after two, but a great beer to have even as an after dinner "mint".

Wonderful. Light bodied but full flavored. Aroma is equal to mint-chocolate chip ice cream but much stronger. Flavor is the same. Body is light and drinkable. This is an amazing beer. It is exactly what it tries to be. I am so happy with it, (although no one else at Old Fashioned seems to be) and I cannot seem to drink enough of this great creation. Perfect. Extremely drinkable. One of the most creative stouts in the USA.

Originally reviewed on March 16, 2006. On tap at the brewpub. Deep black muddled pour, with a nice cream and coffe head. The milky palor of the beer isnt all that appealing. Strong aroma of Andes mints and light roasted sweet coffee. Strong. Flavor is right off a vegetal and planty with basil-like mint. Savory. Follows with a sweet sticky candied mint. Flavor feels very artificial and not natural. Leaves a bitter coffee mint sitckiness. Lightly drying.

Fucking fantastic beer. Before sampling this at the Mid-Winter Brewfest, I was openly questioning the wisdom of brewing a Mint Stout; the guy at the South Shore booth assured me that it would be a pleasant surprise, and it was. I don't even like mint that much, and was expecting something either monstrously--grossly--minty or only theoretically touched by mint leaves.
According to the South Shore guy, each batch had something like five pounds of pure mint leaves added; consequently, the beer has a wonderfully minty character. Its flavor is more mint than coffee, but the coffee is definitely there, backing up the mint and providing a solid stout foundation. The mint is simply outstanding, neither reluctant nor cloying, but simply delicious. Apparently this is on-tap at the brewpub for another couple weeks...if only Ashland wasn't 7+ hours from Milwaukee...

On tap, Autumn Brew Review 2004, I'm assuming a derivation on the Rhoade's Scholar Stout...
Nicely inky black, good rising tan head with plenty of duration to the foam. Dripping ring lace. Mint is a bit overwhelming in the aroma. Sweetened coffee and spearmint-like mint definitely fight it out in the flavor profile with almost equal impression all the way to the finish. Nice medium body and pleasant mouthfeel. The beer strays too much into "exotic European-style coffee territory" with too much sweetness for my tastes, its easily quaffable but a bit saccharine for me to note it very highly. But its a nice beverage.
