Poured a 12 oz bottle into a Stone Tulip. Bottled on Feb. 09, 2011.

Pours a pitch black, with a small tan head that diminishes rather quickly. The lacing though on this beer is amazing. There is a constant lace ring around the beer the whole time. Smells of roasted barley, oatmeal, chocolate, bread, and smoke. The smell isn't anything to write home about, but works. The taste is phenomenal. Strong hints of roasted barley, sweet chocolate, and oatmeal. Mouthful is pretty thin and there isn't much carbonation there. Overall I love this beer. There are a few characteristics that don't make this beer world-class, but the taste makes up for those and puts this into an elite category of good beers. I will definitely have this on my radar to grab in the future.

A: An extremely dark brown (almost black). About a 1.5 finger head that dissipates to about a half a finger that sticks around.

S: Strong roasted malt aroma. Some coffee notes. There is hardly any notes of chocolate even though it advertises its' self as a "chocolate oatmeal stout."

T: A fair amount of bitterness is present. Likewise the oatmeal is there. This is definitely an oatmeal stout....but no chocolate to speak of.

M: Decent but not as smooth & creamy as I would have expected.

O: A nice beer for an oatmeal stout. A clone of Lost Coast comes to mind. But...points are lost as the "chocolate" is more hyped than delivered. At this price point....I'll be willing to pay more....for more.

This beer pours a nearly opaque black color. The head is one inch of light tan foam that recedes slowly into a small cap of lacing. The aroma is of roasted malt, dark and milk chocolate, cocoa powder, graham cracker, and a hint of vanilla. There is a lot going on in this beers aroma. The taste is just as chocolaty as the aroma. Milk chocolate comes through during the sip with lingering dark chocolate in the finish. There is also nice backing roasted malt and graham cracker. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with moderate, fine carbonation, and a velvety texture. Overall, this is a very good stout that I will surely drink again.

Served in a Dogfish Head shaped pint glass.

I enjoyed the beefed-up version of this (BGW series, baby!), so I had to try the usual one. It pours a matte onyx topped by a finger of sandstone foam. The nose comprises roasted malts, light coffee, dark chocolate powder, chocolate syrup, light molasses, and a touch of smoke in the background. The taste darkens things decidedly, including deepening the roast, lightly acidifying the coffee, further darkening the chocolate, and slightly amping up the smoke character. The body is a light-feeling medium, with a very light moderate carbonation and a fairly smooth feel. Overall, though it felt a bit on the light side for my tastes, this was a pretty solid stout.

Thanks to boxcar01 for this extra....

Poured from the 12oz bottle into my heavy bottomed pint glass. Color is black with mahogany on the edges. A vigorous pour brings out a 1/4" of tan head that fades quickly to just a skimming. Thin wispy lacing.

Smell is dominated by a coffee like roastiness. There's some milk chocolate in there as well. Simple smell, but well done.

Taste is a little more complex. Roasted coffee beans are the strongest flavor. The chocolate mixes in nicely, although I wouldn't mind it being stronger. The beer finishes with a nice dark fruit flavor.

Body is on the thin side for style but doesn't detract too much. Carbonation is good, with a fairly slick mouthfeel. Finish is a little sweet. Flavor doesn't last too long on the palate. A good beer no doubt, not sure I'd advertise the chocolate part. Maybe just call it an oatmeal stout and let the drinker discover the chocolate.

Black color with a massive tan head that had excellant retention. The head eventually settles to a thick cap. Heavy lacing is left on the glass.

Rich aromas of semi-sweet chocolate, oats, and a little roasted malt.

Turns out this is not a very sweet tasting stout. The roasted bitterness counters the chocolate sweetness. Nice chocolate flavor without being over-the-top. The oatmeal part of this stout is slightly lost.

I expected a fuller and more creamy mouthfeel. Still nice and has carbonation that compliments the flavors.

I am seldom let down by a Tyranena beer. I certainly was not let down by this one. Not quite a dessert beer.

I never thought I'd see this one, let alone get to try it. Tyranena has been in Indiana for awhile but this was the first time I saw this one. I love the BGW version so this was a must try. It poured a velvety smooth black with no head, just khaki bubbles that laced the glass. The aromas aren't as bold as I imagined. The coffee is actually really light and kind of subtle. The featured aroma is really bitter chocolate. It has some light funk to it. The flavor is both sweet and bitter chocolates with a light coffee roast. It's drinkable and not too sweet. It's a good beer but it really makes me want a Doubly Down 'N Even Dirtier. This beer put the sequel in proper perspective. I'm glad I got to try this one.

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a conical pint.

A: Pours a dark brown with a quickly fading off-white head.

S: Rich chocolate and roast. A bit of coffee and sweetness in the back.

T: Chocolate is overcome by the oat twang a little too much, but the roast and typical stout flavours come through as well.

D: Alcohol is well hidden and flavours blend well. Easy to down a couple due to the lower ABV.

Overall: A decent oatmeal stout. Not the best in the style and certainly doesn't hold a candle to Founder's, but this is a nice little American stout.

Pitch black with a large, dark brown head, though it subsides to a thin lacing.

Smells like toasted oats, though not very large, and some subtle, earthy hops. A little warm alcohol, though not much.

Bold chocolate malt flavor. Not-too-astringent roastiness and a good amount of residual sweetness to support the roast. Well balanced.

Rich and full, especially for one this low in abv.

A good example, though a bit light on the aroma, taste and mouthfeel categories for myself.

pours dark dark brown with a little caramel highlights - 1+finger tan head that left lacing down glass

smells of strong chocolate and oatmeal - the only thing that is missing is the coffee and i would have thought this was FBS

taste is just like the nose - bitter chocolate oatmeal and a slight coffee taste - not as good as FBS but still very solid

mouthfeel is light medium good carb very smooth and creamy

drinkability is good - this is a solid oaty stout and a fine substitute for FBS

Tyranena's Down 'N Dirty Chocolate Oatmeal Stout is a wonderful stout. It pours with little head (like most stouts I guess), and has a rich black color. The smell and taste are great. It has a coffee type bitterness, which is quite yummy. Don't taste much chocolate though. The mouth feel is typical for a stout. It is very rich, and has a complexity that is very nice. I think Tyranena is a good brewery! Haven't had anything form them that wasn't pretty good! Very toasty roast flavor. Will definitely get this one again.

12oz bottle poured into my Rodenbach tulip... The body is a dark brown, almost black, looks good settled but as its pours its much lighter and blah. A light tan head that is gone right away only leaving the thinest of rings and no lacing... The aroma is disappointing, the front is tons of peat and very hot, only on the back end do I get some really nice chocolate notes. The chocolate is nice but I'm disappointed I don't get any nice creamy notes from the oatmeal. Slightly better as it warms... The taste is much better than the aroma, flavors are much more integrated, cocoa nibs, chocolate, and a bit of alcohol. A decent creaminess in taste and feel... The mouthfeel is a bitter warmer and full than a typical oatmeal stout... A touch too much alcohol presents for a stout that I would just love to crush.

This is above average but nothing special. Didn't expect much form Tyranena so it actually exceeded by expectations.

12 oz. bottle poured into a tulip glass.

Appearance-Black in color, barely permeable to light, with faint garnet highlights. Relatively clear. Thin tan head with fair retention.

Aroma-Coffee grounds, slight smoke, some chocolate and cocoa. Plum and prune fruit esters.

Flavor-Super roasty, coffee, and chocolate flavors. The mid-palate has bittersweet dark chocolate and plum flavors, and the finish is roasty coffee grounds. Slight tart flavor as well.

Mouthfeel-Medium body with moderate carbonation. Creamy and silky smooth. The finish is bone dry from the dark malt, but it doesn't quite reach astringency.

This was a weird beer experience. The first half of the bottle I drank had low carbonation, which made the beer seem flat, made the roast a bit over harsh, and made the body feel thin and watery. The second pour out of the bottle was moderately carbonated, and all of the other elements of the beer swung into balance. I think the beer doesn't hold its carbonation particularly well, but right out of the bottle its pretty damn good.

Single purchased @ Famous in Lombard, IL

A- Dark dark ruby that lets the slightest bit of light thru. Lighter on the edges. Two finger thin head faded fast and lefy soft lacing

S- Dry cocoa, licorice, and earthy hop

T- bitter chocolate followed by a dry grainy oatmeal taste. Hop bitterness hangs around at the end

M- medium body, but a little oily. Carbonation is a tad high, but not too bad

D- Glad I tried it, but doubt I'd seek it out again. Way better options in the realm of American Stouts from the region

A- Pours solid black with a thin 1 finger tan head that doesn't last other than a nice thin coating on the top. Not much lacing other than some small spots.

S- Dark roasted malts with some nice sweet oatmeal and chocolate. Definitely some coffee in there with a slight nuttiness.

T- Just like it smells. Tons of roasted malts with a nice bittersweet dark chocolate. Nice fullness and flavor from the oats definitely some coffee in there.

M- Medium bodied with moderate carbonation and a nice bitter finish but not bad.

I have drank this beer many times, but finally reviewing it!

Poured into a pint glass.

Appearance: Black beer with a light mocha brown head that dissapates quickly.

Smell: Roasty coffee and chocolate.

Taste: a nice balance of light coffee that give a mild bitter flavor and a dry bittersweet chocolate flavor. Nice! Lingering bittersweet chocolate aftertaste that is enjoyable making you want another sip.

Mouthfeel: This is a nice smooth moderate body stout. Carbonation is right on and not over the top.

Drinkability: It is a great stout that drinks well. This is a great stout coming from Wisconsin! Cheers!

12 oz bottle poured into a pint glass.

A-Dark brown, black beer. It exhibits ruby highlights throughout. Brown head was 2-finger off the pour and sustained nicely through my enjoying this drink.

S-Chocolatey sweetness with some smooth stout characters. Slightly roasty.

T-Thick choco-roasty flavor, lingering coffee bitterness. Slight cara-toffee sweetness under the roasted flavor. Tastes almost rich.

M-Silky feel, medium-light body, dances around my mouth. Carbonation is smooth, lower-level.

D-A very tasty oatmeal stout.

Thanks to blutt59 for sharing this bottle. Always good to have beers from Tyranena.

The beer pours a dark brown color with a tan head. The aroma is a mix of milk chocolate and roasted malt. I also get a little bit of coffee mixed into the aroma. Overall, a very strong, nice aroma.

The flavor is heavy on the milk chocolate. I also get some roasted malt, but that is about it. Even with all of the malt, the beer is very dry. It is also a bit chalky tasting, but that is not a bad thing as the beer tastes very nice.

Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A black as ink stout with no highlights, well maybe one ...yeah black. Has a nice light brown head and a little bit of lace. Notes of chocolate and coffee jump from the glass as you pour the beer in. Hints of molasses in the background tempt you even further. Deep roasted malt notes dominate the flavor with hints of bittersweet chocolate and black coffee in the background. Silky smooth on the tongue with a good roasted malt bitterness on the finish. This is a good one.

Poured a very dark brown with a delicious chocolate head.

Smell is strong with chocolate and coffee as well as some dark fruits; very intense, in a good way. Taste took me a few more sips than usual for it to really sink in, but when it did it was worth it. Absolutely delicious with dry chocolate, caramel and nuts. The expected roasted malt is there in force, with some mild vanilla as well. Finishes great with a smooth sweetness.

Overall a really complex, fantastic stout, one I'd be happy coming back to over and over. Glad I have five more.

Poured into a Guinness pint glass, body is black with a bit of brown showing through. Full tan head with excellent retention.

Smell is straightforward and simple - roasted and chocolate malt, leaning more towards the chocolate with slight mustyness.

Flavor is a potent combination of charred malt and oats with just a touch of sweetness. Chocolate flavor is pretty minimal for me. Finish is long and roasty.

Mouthfeel is as full as you can ask for in the style, although carbonation is a little rough and takes away from the smoothness.

Flavor was not all that chocolaty as the name would suggest, but easily one of the better oatmeal stouts I've had in a while.

A - Very dark walnut color with about average sized, foamy, frothy, slightly sticky, dark cafe head. Average carbonation with a thin foamy lace left.

S - Pretty sweet aroma with sweet chocolate and malt and oat. Also caramel flavors. Hints of spice and a nice nutty and slightly earthy aroma.

T - Follows the nose. A lot of chocolate with sweet chocolate outweighing the bittersweet chocolate. Roasted oat and some roasted malt also present. Touch of smoked nut, earthy flavors, and a hint of coffee. Chocolate dominates though, and it is sweet (not cloying though).

M - What I want in an oatmeal stout. Medium body with about average carbonation. Incredibly smooth and creamy feel.

D - Easy to drink oatmeal stout. Sweet chocolate but a nice balance with roasted oat and malt to balance it out. Tasty and a great mouthfeel.

Notes: A wonderful oatmeal stout. A touch on the sweet side, but it works well. A very nice beer with plenty of chocolate flavor. Definitely worth a try.
