12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Bottle provided by MilwaukeeCrusher, thanks!
A - Pours on the darker side of the IPA spectrum, definitely more on the brown/red side than orange and draws some comparisons to Troegs' Nugget Nectar. An ivory, 2-fingered head billows to the top of the beer, fanning out at the top of the tulip and has pretty good retention. Lacing leaves behind thick, bubbly clumps of foam that cling to the steep edges of the glass.
S - Smell starts off slightly sweet from the malts and has a bit of caramel to it, but then from there it's all hops. Juicy, piney hops lead the way and has a strong sap and resin aroma. Behind the dominant pine hops are fresh grapefruit and citrus, especially oranges.
T - The taste brings a great balance between the malts and hops. It's not a hop bomb, but only because the hops are mitigated slightly by the dry breadiness of the malts. They also bring a sweetness that lasts throughout the beer. The hops are just as sticky as in the nose and the pine once again takes center stage. Slight grapefruit bitterness arises in the finish. Finish is long and bitter.
M - Mouthfeel is moderately heavy-bodied with good carbonation. Certainly a heavy, full-bodied beer, especially for an IPA. Pretty smooth, however, and the hops do a number on the palate as well as make it quite a bit heavier due to the dripping, resinous hops.
D/O - Drinkability is high. Honestly, I love the piney IPAs moreso than the citrus IPAs, and this one is a fine example of the former. Great taste as well. A succinct way of putting this would be a more malt-balanced Pliny the Elder I believe, as the aroma certainly gives Russian River a run for its money.

A: Dark amber pour with a finger of head. Heavily hazy when held to the light and a noticable amount of sediment floating around the bottom of the teku.
S: Raisins and prunes that remind me of a barley wine. Sweet with a hint of pine.
T: Dark fruit flavors come out heavily (plums and prunes). Strong up front pine and citrus bitterness. As the bitterness dulls a woody, earthy hop flavor is revealed. Caramel and toffee notes also.. very complex
M: Large amount of body on this one for an IIPA, moderate carbonation and a slight warming alcohol sensation.
O: Not what I was expecting.. This had more characteristics of an American Barley Wine then a standard DIPA. That said I did enjoy the flavor as it warmed up a few degrees. The aroma was my biggest complaint on this beer otherwise it was a nice change of pace from the west coast IPAs

Hazy dark orange with a two-finger head which looks nice, but the smell is overwhelmingly resinous from the get-go. I find the beer very unbalanced--so bitter I kind of frown while I'm drinking it--and too syrupy, needs more carbonation to break the heavy hops up. We may have gotten a bad batch but I'm thinking it would be too bitter for my taste anyway.

A - color is deep copper orange. The beer is hazy with particles of hop leaves (maybe) and yeast floating around. I'm not one to focus too much on appearances though, and I actually appreciate when I can see just how "unfiltered" a beer is. Makes me feel like they have done very little to alter it between the bright tank and the bottle. Two fingers of perfect white foam on top that leave tons of lacing on the side of the glass as it fades. Decent retention.
S - Candied orange, lemongrass, sweet citrus and undertones of slightly more earthy hops. Very enticing introduction to the "Hop Whore".
T - Balanced and slightly caramelized malt sweetness up front. Well balanced hop flavor that lends a citrus and tropical fruit quality to the malt. Hints of bready toasted malt in the finish as well as a pleasant and subtle hop bitterness. I like my west coast palate-crushing hop bombs just fine, but this is most definitely a refreshing take on the DIPA. Not too bitter, but very balanced.
M - Super thick and just a touch syrupy. Finish is semi-dry and has some lingering sugars.
