On Rt.38 East in Hainsport,A big old ugly yellow looking building with beer signs painted all over. Used to be a bowling alley back in the day, 38 Bowl/Holly lanes don't remember. This is my go to place for beer. A great big supermarket liquor store/ beer store. If it's available in NJ, they most likely will have it.
DFH,Southern Tier,Weyerbacher, Rouge,Stone, Great Divide, I could go on an on. Plus a very good selection of Belgians,Germans and English brands. If you live close by or not, you have to try this place. It will be worth the trip.

My experience with Canals outside of this one has been poor. This is the best Canals available. Their selection is amazing, they always order in as many seasonal beers as they can, and they always try to maintain a vast variety of domestic and imported craft beers.
The domestic aisle features the Delaware Valley locals (Troegs, Victory, Weyerbacher, Yards, Dogfish Head, Flying Fish, River Horse, etc.). Along with this selection comes a nation-wide variety of craft beers (Terrapin, Brooklyn, Moylans, Schafly, Rogue, Baron's, Jolly Pumpkin Artisan Ales, Allagash, Great Divide, and the list goes on. I come here for this sort of selection.
The import aisle offers the likes of Mikkeller, Weihenstephaner, Meantime, Samuel Smith, Wychwood, Lindemans, Duvel, Chimay, etc. They are not lacking!
If I had one complaint about them it would be the fact that they took away their mix-a-six section of the store and replaced it with "close-out wines." For this reason, I usually venture to other local stores around me to find singles of beers that I don't necessarily feel like buying a six-pack for.
This is definitely a must-visit liquor store in the Hainesport/Mount Holly/Pemberton, NJ area.

This place is the best Canal's I've been too. It is far from Philly but worth the drive because of the prices, selection and service. The beer selection in recent years has gone downhill(due to management not the beer buyers) but they still have a great variety of domestic and imported craft beer. Plenty of Stone, Mikkeller, Cantillon, Struise, BrewDog, Bernardus, Schlafly, Fantome, Weinhestephaner, Hitachino, Ayinger, Unibroue, Bruery, Ballast Point. I can keep going. They also have all of the local PA and NJ beers that you are looking for as well as a killer Italian and Belgian beer selection. The prices are ridiculously low for the area and the main beer guy(his name escapes me at the moment) is extremely knowledgeable and helpful and responsible for most of the awesome beers there. This use to be the best beer store in NJ but they cut out a lot of great beers because the higher end stuff doesn't sell as much.

Looks and feels a little shabby, but the selection is great. Very impressive selection of six packs and bottles, with a comprehensive selection of regionals, and some beers I have not seen other places. There is a nice, if eccentric, selection of 22 oz bottles and a disorganized mishmash of singles. They had an excellent selection of winter/Christmas beers (which were on sale when I visited) and a good looking import selection, if a trifle dusty looking. They have some high-end imports including Mikkeller. Be sure to check out the "on Sale" room up front, which has an odd mix of stuff.
The wine selection is extensive and the liquor selection is large, if not exotic. Their prices are in line with other stores in the state.
This is probably the best beer selection in this part of Jersey.

This location is my go-to Canal's. I've been to a bunch of the other Canal's and Joe Canal's, but this one has the best selection. One full isle is dedicated to bombers/750s, and 4/6 packs of American micros. They have pretty much every Rogue beer you could want. I've seen KBS on sale as $5 singles as well. The next isle is even larger, and is dedicated to Belgians, English, German beers as well as meads. Some of their better-than-average beers include Peche Mortal, Black Albert, a bunch of Nogne O, Thomas Hardys and JW Lees vintages, and a real solid Belgian selection. I live in PA, so by default the prices are better than I'm used to. I really don't think their markup is too high on beer. If you're in the area, check out the Canal's on 541 for a smaller, but rarer selection (it's only a ten minute drive).

Quality - Considering the area (south jersey) they have an very good selection of quality beers, everything from your trappist (archel which is a rare find in most areas), to your assortment of rochefort. They also tend to carry alot of different varieties then that of their northern counterpart (trenton area) like 21st amdmendment, brew dog, and some harder to find belgians and italian beers. Overall a broad range of very good quality beers that will only grow.
Service - service was very good and friendly. having 24 loosies and a six pack the girl at the next counter which wasnt busy jumped in to help place my order in boxes for her counterpart. check out was friendly and met a guy (sorry didnt catch his name but with a baseball hat) who was also very friendly and knowledgable about beer. overall a very good experience here.
Selection - also a very good selection of beers from the normal to lesser known. there is a close out section enclosed in an area as well as a shelf roughly 40ft or so long of loosies. on the other side of the isle lied two shelves full of six packs and more loosies (bombers). i am currently at 1344 beer reviews so it is hard sometimes to walk into a place and find much that i havent had, this place was different, there was at least a 100 or so different beers ive yet to try, and the places i frequent carry in excess of 1000 beers at any givent time so this was a nice surprise as well. the closeout section was mostly 12oz. which was nice saving some money which leads us to perhaps it best aspect.
Value - your not gonna beat the prices here. the close out section was very reasonable as i stacked up on about 22 singles. bombers of brewdog were going for $11 which was very reasonable as well as the Viking beers (4 different styles) that topped off at $22. a small discount was deducted from the final bill equal to the sales tax billed so this was a nice gesture as well, almost like getting a free beer.

This is my local liquor store and it does have quite a nice selection, but there are some beers that just don't get shipped to Jersey and that peeves me.
Quality, they seem to know how to keep their beer, most crafts are kept on the shelf so it'll be good for aging purposes.
Service, John, Mike, Pat, or Bobby all know about beer, it's their personal hobby so I think you could expect to have a good time beer talking there. I normally spend 45 minutes b/sing with Mike or Pat on the regular about what beers we've tried and how they were when I visit.
Selection, Their "good" beers are broken down into 2 aisles; American and Imports, with the shitty ones in the fridge in the back. Not a bad selection though and ever growing. I go there 1 or 2 times a week on average and normally find new beers at least every other visit.
Value, Hey, they buy in bulk, costs them less and the savings are passed on to you. The cheapest liquor store in my area and the best selection too. I wouldn't review it otherwise!
Afterward maybe stop by High Street Grill at 64 High Street Mount Holly, NJ to try out some craft beers on tap. They have a 16 tap system with ever changing beers. Probably about a 7-8 minute drive, worth it if you went out of your way for this place! I think the website is www.highstreetgrill.net
Almost forgot, as I read other reviews after I published mine the great big parking lot has now been stolen by a b/s Sonic fast food chain. Right now it's still brand new, but hopefully it will end up being less crowded eventually. Maybe it would be nice for end of the day munchies, stop by Canal's some time before 10, get a 6pack and get some crappy food!
HAD TO ADD A QUICK EDIT! They pretty much come out with any new REALLY FANCY ASS BEER as soon as it's available! this place literally has the best selection that I've seen in SJ, I currently have a 750 of Brooklyn Black Ops and a North Coast Old Rasputin 12, you can get amazing beers here! I wish there was a higher rating!

Out of all of the Canal's locations, this store has a number of deals on their beers. The only thing is that some of the beers ring up at lower prices at the register compared to what is on the price tag. They have a number of craft beers that are priced somewhat lower than their competitors, which makes me want to fill up my cart. Unfortunately, the staff appeared to be either misinformed or uninformed of the prices, quantity, and location of certain beers on hand. Although this location has many beers unavailable at some of the other competitors, I am willing to overlook the service and make purchases based on price and selection.

I stopped by this store the other night. The building is god awful looking-big and yellow. The inside is different, very clean, well lit, and organized. As you walk in they have shopping carts full of discount brews, past best buy dates I suspect.
The selection is as good as you can expect in NJ. There was plenty of Founders(including KBS), Rogue, DFH, Weyerbacher. I did not look for rarer stuff, but the domestic crafts were well represented. The prices seemed fair, saw some stuff lower at other locations, some higher. The staff was not real helpful. They were polite, but seemed more interested in the NCAA tournaments than me. If you are in the area this is a good store to stop by.
edit: I stopped by again and it was much better than I remembered. They had alot of items I had not seen in NJ before. There prices were very good, definitely worth the drive.

this is not Joe Canal's, but just Canal's but other than that...
As others have said HUGE yellow building, clean interior, great selection all in one place. Other thing I have found is that their staff, though not very knowledgeable about beer, are very friendly and really go out of their way to be helpful. They can sometimes be a tad hard to track down but not to bad.
It is a little out of my way but I am more than willing to go there for their selection. VERY Small listing of some of the rarer beer that I have found there.
DFH - World Wide Stout
DFH - 120, Minute IPA
Oskar Blues - Ten Fiddy (for only 11.99 a 4 Pack or $69 for a case which is a bargain limited supply though)
Stones Double Bastard (One of the first I found to carry Oaked Arrogant Bastard. Though everyone seems to carry it now)
Trappistes Rochefort - series
Youngs Double Chocolate - Nitro Can (a lot carry the bottles but the nitro can is rarer in the stores I have visited)
If someone knows of another location within 10-20 min drive that has the selection of this store shoot me a mail, I would love to check it out. I have found some that carry a fraction of the selection of this store but none that carry everything that this store has. That, and the fact that I can rely on them to go out there and try to get the harder to find beers for our region will keep me coming back for a long time.
