Appearance: Nice dark black pour with a small beige head, small amount of lacing

Smell: Event horizon + raspberries, and the raspberries seem out of place. Nice notes of malt, oak, coffee, dark chocolate and bourbon

Taste: The Raspberries are dominant but not pleasant or integrated. Very odd mixup. The base beer, minus the berries, has great notes of malt, oak, coffee, bourbon and chocolate.

Mouthfeel - medium/full body and mouthfeel

Overall: I was really looking forward to this one and definitely disappointed, the raspberries just do not play well with this imperial stout.

Big thanks goes out to sincereNC for sharing this one with me! Served from bottle into a Mikkeller taster flute. Poured a massively dark brown with a half finger brown head that subsided to a minimal amount quickly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, subtle roasted malt, dark chocolate, raspberries, and a subtle tart note. The flavor was of sweet malt, dark chocolate, raspberries, and tart cherries. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium carbonation. Overall this was a decent brew. I'm not sure how I feel about the new 'let's add fruit to this stout to make it better' movement, but this one just did not do it for my palate. While it was quite easy to drink, it just didn't continue to make me come back for more and more as I would have hoped. While still good, it just feel a little short of my expectations.

Thanks to BubbaBeerMan for sending me a bottle of this in a recent trade.

Pours viscous and pitch black with a thin beige head that quickly settles into a lasting ring. Sporadic spots of lace left behind.

Sweet, vinous aroma that's dominated by the raspberries. There's also a decent barrel presence and some roasted dark malt notes underneath. The nose is bursting forth with fresh raspberries but they are countered by the dry oak and sweet bourbon along with hints of dark chocolate, coffee and toast.

Medium bodied but a bit thinner than expected with subtle oxidization and tight carbonation up front. The beer looks viscuos and oily but it's slightly watered down and not as chewy/full as I had hoped for.

This beers has a complex flavor profile with a balance of fresh fruit, earthy oak, bourbon and dark malt. There's a huge burst of sweet, uber-fresh raspberry up front that dominates the flavor and lingers throughout. This beer is still young so I suspect that this will fade over time but for now the flavor is really strong. It seems like I can even taste the seeds which give it a slight earthy presence. The fruit flavor is countered by the dry toasted oak and near burnt dark malts. Subtle coffee roast, dry wood and bitter dark chocolate notes along with some boozy bourbon sweetness. The bourbon is faint and there is more of a non descript alcohol flavor than anything but the beer never becomes harsh or overly hot. Still, the oxidization and dry wood/roast flavor hurt the drinkability for me. This beer has the potential of being a chocolate covered bourbon raspberry delight but it well a little short of my expectations.

We opened this up during the tasting this weekend. Poured into my Chimay goblet.

Appearance: Pours almost black with some red at the edge. There is just a layer of off white head that fades to a thin ring on top of the pour.

Smell: Smells like raspberry truffles. I'm picking up some of the honey and lots of raspberries with chocolate and some roast. Quite smooth with very little alcohol.

Taste: Chocolate and raspberries dominate. There is a tartness from the berries, but it doesn't clash with the roast. Quite sweet and warm from alcohol in the finish.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with tingly carbonation and a dry finish.

Overall: The raspberries were tastefully done. There is a good balance and this makes a really nice desert beer. I'd have another given the chance.

Tap at Duckworths. Wow is that a dark brown head, though it did not last terribly long. Pretty thick black below that.

Aroma, noticeable fruit, raspberry, blackberry. Roast malt and dark chocolate. Not really all that potent, though the 8.5oz glassware here is lacking.

Taste, pretty interesting. Starts with the slightly tart/sweet of the dark red fruit. Melds nicely into the roast malt and chocolates. A little vanilla and just the faintest anise. The cocoa really lingers.

A decently heavy body, good level of carbonation, no alcohol presence. I also get zero barrel presence.

A tough one for me. Have not cared for any of the fruit imperial stouts. This one did was better than some, but I am glad I didn't have to go through the bull to get a bottle. Glad I did not fork out for the bottle. At the same time I would definetely recommend it.

22oz split into a snifter

A: Pours pitch black with a half finger of light brown head, which receded fairly quickly.

S: Strong sweet bourbon with lots of booze, dark chocolate, and caramel sweetness. Faint raspberries in the background. Very much reminiscent of BCBS. A bit much for me.

T: Much better than aroma. Strong dark chocolate and roast with raspberries in the background. Caramel sweetness to balance. A bit boozy, but not bad.

M: Very thick and creamy.

O: A very intense bourbon barrel aged imperial stout, quite similar to BCBS. The flavor is pretty balanced, though. The raspberries are way in the background, but provide a nice touch. I have a hard time believing this is 10%, though. Seems more like 13%.

Bottle shared at the NWI Tasting Group December Meetup

A - Dark brown with a small cream colored head

S - Bramble, light honey, chocolate, and light oak on the finish

T - Strong raspberry up front with chocolate and caramel on the backend. Reminds me of GI bramble but a bit sweeter due to the honey

MF - Medium body with a nice syrup that remains on the tongue as well as being slighly oily

O - Really solid stout that has a nice raspberry presence. If you love GI Bramble, this could satisfy your craving. Plus since this is made each year, it would be easier to get ahold of than paying the increasing price for Bramble

Poured from a 22 oz bottle into a Ppeworks snifter

A- pours black with a 2 finger dark tan head. Random blotches of lacing remain on the glass.

S- chocolate, roast, dark fruits, light pine.

T- bitter chocolate, roasted malts, dark fruits, bitter coffee.

M- medium body and carbonation. Slightly syrupy with a fairly smooth finish.

O- very good beer. Nice balance of bitter chocolate and dark fruits.

Bottle poured into my Bruery snifter.

Black body with hardly any head. A circle of brown around the glass but no head.

Smells like what I would expect. Sweet, soy sauce-y, maybe a hint of barrel aging but not as much as I expected. Not really any raspberry aroma but has a hint of that aged, almost oxidized aroma.

Taste is in line with the aroma. Maybe not as sweet as the nose would make me believe. still some hints of soy sauce, I pick up the raspberries in the finish a little. A little chocolatey but not as much as the label would make you think. More dark fruit flavors and hardly any roasty notes. Nice mouthfeel that I'd expect from a big stout but not quite as heavy as Dark Lord and it's ilk.

Overall a solid beer and a definite improvement over the regular IS from Olde Hickory but not at the level of Event Horizon. I wouldn't mind drinking this one again but I don't think it is worth going crazy trying to obtain it. I wish the raspberries were more present. I'm not sure what some age will do to this one but I can't imagine it helping too much since it already has a hint of that aged stout taste.

A: Pours smooth oily pitch black with a small amount of coffee colored head that sits along the edges of the beer quite nicely. There is no lacing as it drinks.

S: I'm picking up scents of molasses, dark chocolate, and raspberry. There is an underlying burnt toast smell, and I also get a bit of soy and some alcohol.

T: It starts out sweet with a little burst of fruit flavor. The middle of the beer has a bright tartness from the raspberry. As that fades the bittersweet chocolate shines through. The finish has bit bit of a burnt charcoal like flavor mixed with booze.

M: Full bodied beer. The beer doesn't coat the palate (like I thought it would). The flavors dance on the tongue and fade away after the beer is gone. There is a lingering mix of tart and burnt.

O: I think this beer is pretty good. It's got a lot going on in it. The flavors are a weird mix, and I would have liked it to not have been so bitter. It's good, but I won't be seeking this beer out again.

From a bomber into a snifter
Vintage: 2012
Brewed with honey, raspberries and aged in oak barrels

APPEARANCE: A thick, black, sludgy pour yields a two finger, medium looking, dark tan head with good retention. Jet black body with medium levels of carbonation evident. Head slowly fades to a full foam cap, then recedes to a half wisp. A ring remains until the end and leaves touches of lacing down the glass. Great looking, thick black beer.

SMELL: Lots of roasted and chocolate notes here. Pure baker's chocolate, some oak in there, with light vanilla and cream, but the pure chocolate is more prevalent. Honey and light raspberries are noticeable, though I might not have noticed had they not said anything. Pretty well done actually. Light toffee notes as well. This is a really wonderful merger of aromas between the base chocolatey stout and the oak barrels lending some nice vanilla and sweet notes. Great stuff.

TASTE: Raspberries some out much more in the flavor, while the chocolate is in the back a little bit. Roasted flavors and red fruits up front, then some dark, pure chocolate, roasted notes, a touch of toffee and more raspberries at the swallow. A bold and lingering finish is fruity with hints of bitter chocolate and roasted grain under it, as well as some mild oak and whisky flavor. A good mix between whisky barrel and raspberries, though it use more chocolatey base beer to compete with the fruit. A little more fruit dominante compared to the nose, but still very enjoyable.

PALATE: Medium body and medium levels of carbonation. Semi-creamy on the palate, goes down alright and finishes quite sticky. No bite or burn.

OVERALL: The look was great and the nose excellent, but the taste was a little too fruit forward to really make this as good as it wanted to be. A more balanced flavor profile that matches the nose would make this outsanding. Moreover, the feel would need to be a little fuller and creamier for top marks. Still, this is a top class beer that I would gladly drink again. Thanks again jbeatty!

22oz wax topped bomber into a couple of snifters. Big thanks go to my buddy Barscream for sharing this with me. Pours dark and oily in the glass, with an angry looking head of dark mocha foam. This stays robust and leaves back some quite heavy lacing at times. Smells of dark roasted coffee, chocolate and a good bit of tart fruitiness, with some softer raspberry accents definitely showing themselves. Oak and alcohol warmth rounds out the edges. The taste is similar. Roasted malts, sweet chocolate and honey, some prominent raspberry flavor and a touch of herbal character. Little vanilla and oak mixed in as well. Alcohol adds some extra bold sweetness. The mouthfeel is full and chewy with a touch of underlying tannic slickness that helps add some smoothness to this. The alcohol can be strong is spots but is overall pretty accessible for 10%. There was certainly no shortage of character going on with this, sometimes maybe a little too much, as those big Stout, raspberry and barrel flavors all kind of crashed into each at times. This was still pretty nice though. Half the bottle was a good enough amount for me. Thanks Greg!

Pours a near pitch black with a slight brown head. Carbonation is evident and good for the style. Nice lacing.

Smell is sweet malt and rasberries. A little bit of alcohol in the nose but not a lot. Bitter chocolate on the back end.

Taste is rasberries up front, followed by chocolate and a bit of a licorice taste. Finishes with a bit of a medicinal aftertaste. Rasberries are integrated pretty weel with the traditional stout flavors. Taste is pleasant though not overwhelming, overall slightly sweet and not particularly bitter or sour.

Mouthfeel is very strong and the best element of the beer. Very smooth and creamy, making it easy to drink despite the relative heaviness.

Overall this is an enjoyable beer and one I would drink again if readily available. The way the rasberries are integrated into the traditional big stout flavors shows a lot of skill, but in the end the slightly medicinal finish detracts a little. As a "special release" beer it doesn't quite register in the upper echelon for me, but that shouldn't be held against it.

a - pried the wax off and cracked the cap and filled my E snifter. nice rich sludgy pour...settles like an oil spil with a thin just shy of a finger's worth of milk mocha frappacino looking head. head fizzled away within a minute but left small milky bubble clusters on the surface. swirling rebuilds slightly and coats the glass with a thin layer or spotty lacing.

s - during the pour the smell started to fill the air. upon inspection...chocolate covered raspberries. the honey is present as well but not as much so as the raspberries. kind of like the imperial stout with some raspberries in it...as advertised. it really smells decadent...like a raspberry brownie you'd get at a steakhouse...INTENSE.

t - just as the nose advertised, i'm drinking a dessert. it is rich and thick and chocolate raspberry cake. 50 times thicker than a ten fidy (well, maybe not 50 times, but you get where i'm going with how thick and rich this one is). might be too intense for some. the raspberry is good, but VERY dominating. i am expecting the chunks that you get when eating raspberry yogurt...picture that but in a chocolate cake beer. i don't get anything from the oak barrels and i cannot pick out the honey as well as in the imperial stout.

m - full bodied and leaves a cooling crisp alcohol tingle in my mouth.

o - overall, this is all about the raspberry. very sweet and very desert like. delicious, yes...but 22 oz seems like i've got my work cut out for me. i'd probably take the imperial stout over this one if given the choice...both great beers, but the raspberry is an interesting treatment to a great beer...doesn't necessarily make it better for my taste buds.

Poured into Darkness tulip 2-12-12

A: Black with a khaki colored head. Ruby around the edges with a nice bit of lacing.

S: I absolutely love the smell of this beer. Dark chocolate and charred malt with a wonderful sweet raspberry puree aroma. Mild oak as well.

T: Taste is intense charred/roasted malt and a bitter chocolate and tart raspberries. Just doesn't work for me, the raspberries add a bit of acidity and make the stout feel a bit thin and taste a bit more bitter.

M: A little thinner than I'd like. Medium bodied to thin for the style.

O: I really enjoyed sipping on this beer and could not stop smelling it. I do not get much honey from it but that may be because there are so many other elements to it.

Reviewing Lindley Park from Olde Hickory Brewery out of North Carolina. This beer is a twist on their most famous brew, the Event Horizon.
Score: 92

From the 267 day of 2011. Enjoyed 06/16/12, served in a St. Bernardus Watou stemmed snifter and shared with my father for father's day.

Appearance: Pours a jet black color with a finger of creamy mocha head that settles to a ring around the glass. Good lacing and retention. 4/5

Smell: Huge doses of sweet honey, bourbon-y molasses, raisin, and raspberries. Sweet milk chocolate too. The most prominent aroma, by a mile, is the honey when you swirl the brew. There's some complementary vanilla and oak in the mix too. 4.5/5

Taste: More raspberry upfront and throughout on the palate than the nose led on. In the aroma, the raspberry was more an incorporated element, but it's dominant on the palate. Behind the raspberry is sweet raisin, brown sugar and vanilla. Dark chocolate flavor behind that. Just a little bit of oaky flavor and residual black coffee towards the finish. Very sweet, but the alcohol is well-hidden. 4.25/5

Mouthfeel: Just shy of full bodied, light carbonation. Syrupy mouthfeel. Pretty sweet finish. 4/5

Overall: About on par with Bramble, though the flavors are better incorporated here. This is a very sweet imperial stout, and I have a strong feeling that those who did not like Dark Lord or Bramble Bourbon County Stout will not like this too much either.

Recommendation: Worth seeking out a glass, but I couldn't finish a whole bomber of this to myself if I tried.

Pairings: Steak.

Cost: $18 for a 22 oz (bomber) bottle.

Pours an almost opaque super dark brown with a foamy dark khaki head that settles to wisps of film on top of the beer. Small dots of lace slowly drip into the remaining beer on the drink down. Smell is of dark roasted malt, cocoa, and berry aromas. Taste is much the same with cocoa and raspberry flavors on the finish. There is a mild amount of roasty bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a lower level of carbonation with a slightly crisp and medium mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer some great flavors.

Pitch black with a tan head, it dissipates quickly. A neat red tinge appears on the swirl. It smells almost like a stout sour or a Belgian impy or something. That sweet honey/sour raspberry combo offers what smells like a sweet tartness. I mean, really, my nose wrinkles and my brows furrows as I try to figure it out. The mouthfeel is sensational as the berries do add a neat and tingly sensation to the big ol chocolate stout feel. It tastes simply like an OHB impy + raspberries. It's not even that the berries impart so much flavor, but they do enhance the overall feel and appeal to it. A winner.

Lightless black with a creamy tan collar. Aromas of honey, chocolate, and raw, juicy raspberries. There's some bourbon on the back end along with a whiff of booze, but it doesn't scream "bourbon barrel" to me (not a bad thing). Silky dark chocolate covered raspberries, honey, toasty caramel, and light-roast coffee. Medium-full, smooth, and a little drying in the finish. Not mind-blowing, but very good.

Aquired this through a trade and super excited to be giving this a try tonight.

A- Poured into a Duvel snifter. Pours motor oil black w/ a kick-ass reddish-brown head!

S- The raspberry is pretty pronounced in the nose w/ a hint of honey and the oak joining in as well.

T- Blast of raspberry right up front! then here comes the honey, oak and dark chocolate all melded together... Crazy how the raspberry starts it off and stands alone. Almost makes it a bit difficult to pick up the other flavors.

M- I enjoy the mouthfeel on this one. Slick and velvety, with a tiny bit of carbonation, which i feel is appropriate with the raspberry. Also a nice little tinge of tartness from the raspberry on the back end.

O- A great beer that im happy to have gotten the chance to try. Love the oak, honey, and smooth dark chocolate in this one, and while the raspberry is clean and crisp, its just a bit much in my opinion. Either way, a great beer and definately worth your time.

Thanks to beerness for this bottle: for those keeping score at home, that's two nights in a row of beerness. I think I'm getting a callous. 22 oz. bottle split with my wife.

Pours a distinctly black dark with minimal carbonation. Smell is a winner: certainly suffused with raspberries, nearly the level of Kuhnhenn's Raspberry Eisbock: pretty wicked nice. Little vanilla, more sweet. Definition of promising.

Lindley Park certainly has a bite to go with its nose. Yow! Alcohol roundhouse to the synapses starts the experience. The raspberries aren't as pronounced as in the nose, being cut with sweet malts & what I can only assume is honey. Chocolate is restrained but shows. Bourbon arrives only as a warmth in the back of the throat. Sweet fruit really lightens this one up compared to your average big stout; & the drinkability is the star. A sipper you can't sip. Big Gulps are the norm.

Not quite life-changing, but an excellent beer that really brings all the components together with a masterfully light touch. More & more impressed with Olde Hickory with every beer I have.

Bomber into an Old Engine Oil tulip. Thanks to Tony for sharing.

A: Black body with brown highlights; momentary tan head. Pretty average.

S: Whoa. Huge bourbon, vanilla, chocolate, and raspberry. Smells like an incredibly delicious bourbon + raspberry filled chocolate truffle. It's a big, bold, complex, and amazing aroma.

T: Way sweeter than the nose, with far less barrel and far more fruit. Raspberry and chocolate are the main players, with some spicy booze joining in on the finish. Still great, but less mindblowing than the aroma.

M: Slick medium body with some late-arriving but fairly intense carbonation. Strange, but not unpleasant.

O: This one made me fall in love with it based on the smell along. I could inhale this all night. A must-try.

S- a touch of milk chocolate up front that transitions into a massive tart raspberry covered in honey aroma. Some warm booze blends with a soft oak aroma on the finish.

T- rich juicy raspberry and a touch of honey hit the palate at first. Roasty dark malt bitterness blends in with a hint of warming alchohol. Soft oak flavors on the finish with a lingering mocha on the aftertaste.

MF- creamy rich mouthfeel with a chewy heavy body and soft carbonation.

D- a sipper of a after dinner beer.

Overall a delicious blend of chocolate stout and rich real fruit flavor.

Pours near black with a thin off white head and some slight lacing. The nose brings a good amount of raspberry plus chocolate. Faint roast as well. Raspberry is a really nice component of the flavor along wi traditional stout. Quite well balanced. Medium body with a smooth finish and a bit of booze. Boom.

Pours very deep brown and opaque, with 1 finger of medium tan head.

The raspberries blend with the stout in a way that really evokes molasses. Smell and taste are both heavy on the raspberries, but heavier on a molasses-like dark sugary sweetness. Kinda like eating raspberry gingerbread without the ginger.

Feel is heavy and thick - quite chewy. Enough carbonation.

A good, interesting stout. I don't know where that sugary molasses character came from, but it works fairly well.
