Very tasty DIPA. The malt backbone is strong and washes the palate as the bitterness, certainly 100 IBU, strikes the palate. Mild citrus, mango and pienapple fruity, piney, and caramel. Full mouthfeel.Unfiltered light orange with lots of head. Thanks Michael P.

Bottle: Poured a hazy bright amber color ale with a nice large foamy head with good retention and some lacing. Aroma consists of citrus and resinous hops with pretty dominant with some dry caramel malt notes also perceptible. Taste is a mix between some citrus hops with nice floral touch and some resinous and slightly earthy hops with some dry caramel malt wand light residuals sugar notes. Body is slightly fuller then average with good carbonation and no apparent alcohol. Very well brewed and a beer I would seek again.

Deeply resiny and chocked full of juicy citrus flavor, Two Captains may be European-brewed but it's heart is in America.

The pour delivers a hazy orange hue with amber and peach highlights showing through. Well headed with a creamy off-white froth, the foam shows fantastic retention and intricate patterns of lace. IPAs just don't look much better.

Juicy aromas of citrus and tropical fruit tantilize the nose and provokes mouthwatering sensations immediately. Light caramel notes give the impressions of honey-soaked fruit that brace against herbal aromas of freshly cut grass and pine.

All that's promised by the nose is delivered in taste. The flavor of caramel remains mild and supply sweet to inform the fruit juices of ruby red grapefruit, tangerine, passion fruit, mangoes, apricots, and kumquats that carry the beer through mid palate. Afterwards, the malt falls from caramel to a dry starchy taste and the hops fade from fruit to the resiny bitterness of pine and herbal grasses to finish. Such dryness in final impressions, the exposure of mild phenolic spice seems to offer as much intrigue as misplacement.

Medium bodied, but the quick fade from creamy malt to dryness gives the beer a lighter and crisper feel. Alcoholic warmth, dry resin, and fleeting malt textures allow for a snappy crispness and highly refreshing (almost minty) finish and aftertaste.

The magic of this America-inspired ale lies in it's smooth bitterness that massages the palate with a combination of tropical sweetness and citrus acidity. This allows for the beer to crawl into the conversation of beers like Great Lakes Erie Monster, Russian River Pliny the Elder, and Founders Double Trouble.

Nogne-O Two Captains Double IPA. Ale 8.5% Alc/vol.
"Jan Halvorfjeld, winner of Norwegian homebrewing championship 2010 brewed his champion double IPAat Nogne-O. We at Nogne O are of course proud to be with him making this happen. Ingredients: Grimstad water, malted barley, hops and yeast. 100 IBU, brewed and bottle by Nogne O, Grimstad, Norway."

Completely opaque, thoroughly hazy peach and apricot appearance, creamy white heady froth atop.

Aroma: pungent and powerful, a massive mix of the usual piney/citrus notes, but a bit of a muddle, rather indistinct. Not quite what I'm looking for in an IPA. I'd like some clearly struck tones. This nose is more cacophonous.

Taste: In the mouth, it's a brash splash of hops, with malt firmly included in the mix. Booze rises up quickly, invades the braincase with alarming ease. It's a murky mess that's high on hops and alcohol, but has very little in the way of delicacy or finesse. It's what I'd expect from a homebrew double IPA, but not from a professional brewing concern. Oh, well, there's room for all kinds of beer. This is fine, it's just not refined. I do like yeasty, cloudy, unfiltered beers, and rustic ones, as well, but this one just seems, in light of what really succeeds as a double IPA, unsophisticated.

Although I do have a sneaking suspicion that if this came from Belgium rather than Norway, I'd be more pleased. It's contradictory, I know. If I could fix that I would. Or, …would I?

The beer pours a hazy, dirty yellow color with a white head. The aroma has some pine and resin notes, as well as some biscuit malt. The flavor is not as good as the aroma. I get a hint of pine and some resin, similar to what I got in the aroma, but I also get some leather and tobacco notes. There is also a hint of orange citrus and some biscuit malt. Medium mouthfeel and medium carbonation.

A: The beer is hazy amber orange in color and has a light amount of visible carbonation. It poured with a half finger high beige head that quickly died down, leaving lacing on the surface and a collar of large bubbles around the edge of the glass. The beer turns rather cloudy once the yeast is poured out from the bottom of the bottle.
S: Moderately strong aromas of citrusy hops and caramel malts are present in the nose along with hints of pine resin.
T: The taste is similar to the smell and has initial flavors of caramel malts and citrusy hops that are followed by a light to moderate amount of bitterness that lingers through the finish.
M: It feels medium-bodied and a little crisp on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation.
O: This beer has a great balance between the malts and hops. It's also quite drinkable because any traces of alcohol are very well hidden.

Got this from Biergartenok, cheers Freddie!

Pours a fairly hazed apricot with 3 fingers of sand colored head. This never quite clears up, insane head retention & good lacing

S: Breadyness, floral notes, all fairly subtle

T: Woody & grassy bitterness up front, apricots, pears & grapefruit up front, along with peppery spiceyness & some pineapple. Breadyness, honey malt, apricot, grapefruit, woody hops & pineapple as this warms. Finishes with pineapple, pineyness, woody dryness some nectarine & pear fruittyness

MF: Medium bodied, subtle carbonation that becomes creamy as this warms, good balance

A good DIPA, but I've had better from these guys. The hop mix wasn't completely to my liking, plus a little too fruitty for me, but is fairly quaffable none the less

Appearance: pours a cloudy orange color with a big 3" merangue like head that lasts a long time. Nice lace shows up on the glass.

Smell: grapefruits, soft pine, and an earthy tone is very pleasant on the nose.

Taste: big caramel flavors with grapefruit, orange, some honey, a mild amount of pine, and a nice biting hop bitterness. Alcohol is mildly noticeable here.

Mouthfeel: medium-heavy in body. Lightly crisp to start, smoother and dry at the finish. Long aftertaste with this beer.

Overall: a very well done DIPA that has bold flavors and is very well balanced. This one is worthy of a try.

Pours a very cloudy dark golden orange that is completely opaque with faint tangerine edges and a frothy, pillowy white head. Excellent retention, only slowly fading into a lasting cap that leaves rings and large chunks of soapy lacing behind.

Dank, earthy hop aroma with some resinous oils and citrus notes along with a pale malt presence. Floral with lots of soil/pine character balanced by hints of tropical and citrus fruits. Hints of grapefruit, pineapple and orange peel balance by subtle biscuity malt.

Chewy full body with a prominent spicy, earthy hop presence up front with a good balance of earthy and sweet notes. This lingers over the pale malt backbone into a slightly dry finish. The hop profile is complex, being floral, earthy, bitter, dry and sweet with no characteristic overpowering the others. Lots of dry pine needle countered by hints of grapefruit, pineapple and citrus rind. Malt presence has notes of biscuit and Graham but doesn't get in the way of the hops. Subtle heat toward the end of the palate but the high ABV is nicely masked.

Overall, this beer is complex, well balanced, flavorful and easy to drink.

Had on tap at Craft this summer. Pours out an orange color, nice mild off white head on top of it. Aroma wasn't really hoppy, just bitter.

Taste wasn't really hoppy, just bitter as hell. Really, that's all there is to this beer. Yeah maybe some crystal malt, a substantial amount of alcohol in the mouthfeel, but really this is just a bitter bomb, and it isn't from it being old, as the hopping hasn't turned into sweetness, its just bitterness that blows all other flavors pretty much out of the water. This beer drinks like you could strip paint with it.

It was my first beer of the day, was challenging to finish, but I did. At no point did I taste anything resembling a citrus or pine presence related to hops (or anything else).

Great for a bitter, acidic alcohol fix, but I don't understand the love for this beer.

On tap at Max's today.

The beer pours a slightly hazy, orange amber color with good head retention and lacing. The nose is attractive in this beer, showcasing earth, considerable orange citrus and light ice tea. The flavor profile replicates the nose, but with a considerable amount of sweet malt, and a bitter, somewhat piney finish. Mouthfeel is medium bodied with a fairly long bitter finish. Drinkability is OK, though the sweet malt and noticeable alcohol wear me out after a bit.

This isn't a style of DIPA that I'm a huge fan of, but nevertheless, there's no denying that this is a well crafted beer.

On-tap at Taco Mac Metropolis in Atlanta.

Pours a hazy orange-copper color with a half-finger cream-colored head. The head recedes into a patchy layer on top leaving solid lacing.

Smells of a combination of pale and caramel malts with good amounts of herbal and earthy hop aromas. Also present are lighter amounts of pine.

Tastes similar to how it smells. Robust pale and caramel malt flavors kick things off and are joined quickly by mildly spicy and herbal hop flavors. Shortly thereafter the hop flavors turn more toward pine as the flavor profile dries out a bit. Pine hop flavors carry through to a solidly bitter ending.

Mouthfeel is very good. It's got a nice thickness with grainy carbonation.

Drinkability is good. I had no problems finishing my glass and could have another.

Overall this beer represents a lot of Scandanavian IPA's for me, well-balanced malt influence that dries out a bit midway through the sip with earthy and herbal hops. Worth a shot.

Purchased in the USA, home of cheap Nøgne Ø, apparently.

Pours a beautifully cloudy oragne-gold colour, with a frothy, thick head of yellowish off-white, that leaves sticky, sheeting, solid lacing down the inside of the glass. Really looks rather impressive.

Nose is crisp and sharply hoppy, with a Citra or almost Kiwi bite to the aroma, giving fresh rubbed lemon, greenery and spicy resin. Surprisingly, it's not all that robust—it certainly doesn't punch you in the face with its potency, but the characters that are there are lovely.

Taste is smooth, with a clean nuttiness towards the back of the palate, and a fresh hop flavour giving a cleansing lemon note throughout, and down the edges of the palate. Minimal true bitterness—it finishes rather light, with a sprightly herbal character like fresh rosemary. Malt is almost indiscernible, although the hops don't feel unbalanced; they just feel as though they have been given free reign in the spotlight.

Feel is also quite light, which greatly enhances the drinkability but somehow without skewing the balance too far to the hoppy bitterness.

Great brew, this one. Even if it wasn't devised by Nøgne Ø, it was executed with style and skill. As always.

This is what the kids call “ugg” - murky clarity, dull tone and floating bits of sediment are indeed far from attractive features. The egg yolk colour doesn't exactly do it for me either; it looks like something Rocky might throw back after rolling out of bed. Also, the thin, tattered head looks pathetic.

The aroma steers us back on track, touting notes of pine serum, rotting citrus, and caramel-laced malts. There's also a concerning presence of alcohol. It smells overtly earthy, herbal and bitter. It'd be enough to turn the average Joe away, but isn't quite juicy enough to hook-in the die-hard hop fiends.

Two Captains drinks like fruit nectar: it is thick, pulpy, and has a super-concentrated fruit flavour. More specifically, it tastes like mango, peach and pear nectar, or more accurately a combination of, and has a light, sugary finish. The aroma made rumours about pine resin but the flavour offers only a negligible amount.

The fruity hops are a one man gang that bullies the other flavours, but that's not to say that malts don't factor in. The mouthfeel is not completely immune to impressions of alcohol but handles it well; a bready malt base helps to soak it up. It can stumble a bit but recovers easily with notes of green grass and pineapple.

While Nogne Two Captains has nowhere near the “wow” factor as some other DIPAs, it is a delightfully fruity and bitter beer in its own right. That said, I put off trying it until now simply because the price-point didn't match-up to more local, affordable offerings and now, having had it, I know there was no harm in waiting.

Served from bottle into a Mikkeller oversize wine glass. Poured a hazy red-orange with a two finger fizzy cream colored head that subsided to one finger slowly. Maintained decent lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, citrus, citrus hop, and nuttiness. The flavor was of sweet malt, citrus, citrus hop, fruit, and slight skunk. It had a medium feel on the palate with high carbonation. Overallthis brew wasn't that bad. The flavors going on in this were pretty nicely balanced. For the ABV this one was quite drinkable without a doubt. I really wish the skunk aspect I detected in this one was not present as it would have made this a stellar brew, but you can't win them all I suppose. Definitely worth trying however.

Pours a hazy orange-ish color with a light tan head. In the aroma, a mix of pine and citrus hops. In the taste, a small citrus rind and some small pine notes of hops. A: Poured from a bottle to a tulip glass. Had an orange color and a thick, cloudy texture. Some floaties. There was a big, foamy, long-lasting head. Pretty good, though not great, lacing.

S: A big aroma of citrus, hops, and some malt.

T: Tasted of hops (lots of them), citrus (grapefruit, possibly a bit of orange), malt, and a touch of caramel. A very focused, sharp, and well made flavor.

M: A highly carbonated beer with a smooth finish. Medium-bodied.

D: This has to be first DIPA from a European brewery that's actually gotten the style completely right. Eminently drinkable.

I had this on tap at Max's in Fell's Point, Md.

A deep golden hued brew with semi-hazy appearance and thick cap of pale cream. The nose has a lot of piney smelling hops which are pungent and full in the nose. The feel is thick resinous and strong with a strong bitter quality and semi-dry finish with light astringency.

The flavor is focused on the hops which have a very intense bitter quality that gives you sharp pine and slightly grassy notes with an undercurrent of citrus. The flavor of the malt gives a slight sweet accent to the hops, but really just anchors the beer. I found this to fit the style well and even though high abv -9% plus I am sure, it is one you want to have again so get it if it is available. It satisfied the hop-head in me.

A - Poured with two fingers of white foam on top of a hazy, dark golden body. The head settles fairly quickly and leaves a nice coating of lace on the glass.

S - A pungent aroma of hops with notes of pineapple, pine, orange and sweaty character. Some caramel malt in the background.

T - Sweet, dense caramel malt up front with some pine hop character. Spicy hops with grapefruit and onion character in the middle. Finishes with more fruity character of pineapple with sweet malt and fairly strong bitterness.

M - Medium-thick body, moderate carbonation, and a slightly sweet finish.

D - A very intensely hoppy beer and while there is quite a bit of malt there to balance things out, it never comes across as something I could describe as easily drinkable. Still, it has a very enjoyable hop aroma and a flavor that almost comes off as barleywine like and I enjoyed it quite a bit.

500 ml bottle, $7.99. Served in a snifter, the beer pours a murky burnt orange color with about an inch off-white head. Head retention and lacing are both OK. Aroma is mostly citrusy (tropical fruit, mango, grapefruit) hops, along with some pine hops and caramel malt. The taste is similar to the aroma, but the citrusy and pine hops flavors are pretty even with each other in their strength. Some caramel and bready malt is also noticable, and there's a nice bitter hoppy finish. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it's a bit coating and has moderate carbonation. Another solid overall brew from Nøgne Ø, I liked it.

Hop hazed dark gold colour with a creamy, off-white head. Good head retention. Nice lacing.

Resinous, dank, piney aroma with clear tropical fruit notes over the top. Some passiontfruit and grapefruit notes. One of the more complex hop bills I've had the pleasure of consuming.

Smooth malt with lots of creamy, fruity hop notes. Dank and piney. Lots of resin. Good, moderately-strong bitterness. A very good all round DIPA.

Medium body with moderate carbonation. Solid.

A very nice DIPA with a nice hop focus but with enough malt character to support everything.

Pretty good beer althought the color of mine is more brown. I let it warm up a bit out of the fridge. Poured with a nice, thick, foamy, frothy, off-white to cream colored head and a little lace. Color is a cloudy orange brown. Aroma is hop, grapefruit, kiwi, malt, caramel. Flavor is similar with a little sweetness to offset the bitter plus the tang of the acid on the tongue and roof of the mouth. Great body and perfect carbonation! Finish is like flavor, balanced with a slow taper of good length. Slow session beer.

On Tap at Memphis Taproom in a tulip during their IPA DAY.

The Two Captains looks quite lovely in the glass, the head is billowy, dense and has some legs and sticks to the glass. The liquid is a burnt bronze color almost as an old penny. Some bubbles seen rising, a nice look off the tap. The smell is a but subdued at first just showcasing the malt and biscuit like scents. Some warming brang out some tropics with orange and some floral aspect. I get a bit of pine and a bit of metallic scent rising up as well. The taste is malty for a DIPA, but understanding this is from across the pond, I get it, it's not supposed to be a west coast hop bomb. Warming brings out the hops more combining floral and slight citrus. Maybe it's just me, but I did pick up some metallic taste as well, but that could be my mind playing tricks on me. Feel is medium bodied and rich. Not entirely a gulper in the sense. One is good for me, I would suggest letting this one come up to room temp.

I drank this the night before Nøgne Ø's "Save Two Captains" campaign failed to meet its target.

Pours a murky amber colour with slight red tinge. Head is cream-coloured, nice and dense with decent retention and some really lovely sticky lace left behind. Very pleasant-looking.

Lots of nice hops on the nose, Americain in character with masses of citrus and a really enjoyable tartaric twang. Very sherbety, tangy with some acidity to it, a touch of rosewater and a slight pine resin towards the back. Mostly hops with not much malt but it's lovely and complex and exciting.

Taste is pleasant and IPA-esque, very citrus-forward with more of that nice sherbety tartaric twang at the front. Develops into a rich, earthy mid-palate with a nice toffee malt character underlying, then finish is full of nice, strong IPA hoppiness, citric rind, floral notes with rose and lavender, pine resin and yeah, just rich hop oil that's really nicely flavoursome.

Nice, full body. Gentle carbonation texture but wonderfully padded by the malt. Ideal texture for an IPA. I actually feel good drinking that.

This is overall a pretty standard double IPA but it exemplifies exactly what I love about Nøgne Ø; this isn't a beer that pops and explodes with exciting new vistas that beer can reach, it's just a perfect example of a double IPA, but in being so it highlights everything that is good about the style and makes you want more. Great job.
