18th Jan 2013: my last beer in the Heartlands New York outlet under the ESB.

Looked good: dark and mean, the beige head setting it off nicely.

Malts all the way in the nose: roasted and over toasted with some hints of both coffee and dark chocolate within.

Those hints in the aroma came out in the taste also: rich coffee flavours with a dark chocolate biscuit feel.

Very drinkable and smooth in the mouth, a pleasant way to end a mini-session before more sight-seeing during the afternoon.

I dropped into the Heartland Radio City for on of these simply because I knew it was on nitro.

My bartender was an utter tool.

Served in a pint glass.

A: Frothy and bubbly, like most respectable nitro pours, with a nice healthy, mocha-colored head that retained itself throughout the session.

S: The nose was understated overall, yet I still got a decent aroma of dark malt and grains.

T: While this was fairly light overall, I appreciated the tempered coffee bill here and the pleasant roasty, malty taste.

M: The nitro pour did wonders for the creaminess. Foamy, like a milkshake, and no booze detected.

O: Along with "Red Rooster," this was my favorite Heartland Brew to date.

On-tap at Heartland Brewery Union Square, New York, NY

A: The beer is clear but very dark reddish brown in color and has no visible carbonation. It poured with a quarter finger high dense beige head that eventually died down, leaving a collar around the edge and lacing down the sides of the glass.
S: There are moderate aromas of chocolate and roasted malts in the nose.
T: The taste is similar to the smell but has a bit more complexity with flavors of roasted and burnt malts along with notes of semisweet chocolate and hints of roasted coffee beans.
M: It feels a bit shy of medium-bodied, slightly airy and very smooth and creamy on the palate with a moderate amount of carbonation. There is a bit of dryness in the finish.
O: This oatmeal stout is very easy to drink; it’s light-bodied nature makes it not a bad selection of you want to have an oatmeal stout in the warmer months.

Had this beer as part of a flight at the Radio City location. Cool and in sample glass.

Nice and thick light tan head with a very dark brown body. Light smell (faint coffee).

Dark toast flavor, creamy flavor. Dark chocolate.

Light mouthfeel and slick.

Excellent representation of the style. Authentic.

Nitro tap from the Heartland Brewery near Rockefeller center. 50th street maybe?

Poured a thick black color with frothy cream colored foam full of some good ol' nitrogen.

Smells grainy with some sweet malts. Couldn't detect much else.

Oaty taste that follows up with some sweetness. Some very subtle coffee undertones, but I would like them a little more prevalent.

Very smooth, pretty light body.

Overall, well balanced and quite sessionable. Not the most amazing/interesting flavor but it's thoroughly enjoyable

Poured almost pure black with a thin white head.

Didn't have much smell could get malts not much else.

It didn't have a huge amount of flavour I could get malts and some bitter hoppiness.

Felt smooth in the mouth with a little carbonation.

Overall not the best oatmeal stout, pretty mediocre.

Samples at Radio City, New York. Pours almost black with a tanned, thick, long lasting head. Aroma is of grain, oats and some coffee and chocolate. Flavor is of dark fruit, oats and some espresso. Medium, smooth body. It was very nice with a cheesecake.

Had on tap at Union Square location--served into a pint glass

Appearance: red-brown in color with 1/2 inch head, clear, moderate carbonation

Smell: big oats and toasted malt

Taste: Big oats through creamy caramel malt

Mouthfeel: light body for the style, moderate carbonation, sweet

Drinkability: This is easily the best brew I had at Heartland and the one I would go back for. I love the light body and the way the oats pop here. Really great example of the style.

First had: on tap at Heartland Chophouse, NYC, NY

A good standard stout. If your bartender is nice, he'll make you a tasty black & tan with the Red Rooster. Pours dark brown to black with a small foamy head. Roasty malts and coffee in the aroma. Similar taste of dark, roasted malts, coffee bitterness, and a bit of cocoa. Sort of medium-bodied for a stout, but still good, and a quaffable alternative to Guinness.

On tap at the Empire State Building Heartland Brewery.

Poured a dark brown color, near black; no translucense. A nice creamy tan head resting atop but did not last too long into the drink.

The smell was dark roasted coffee, chocolate, and notes of earth.

This was good. Excellent coffee notes hitting the tongue, a nice thick mouthfeel and overall the best thing I had that night.

I had this as a part of a voyage at the Heartland at 51st between fifth and sixth avenues in Manhattan. I liked this beer better in previous times than i did yesterday but I'll give it the benefit of the doubt. The roastiness is very prevalent in the aroma and flavor and with the low abv it's a great stout.

Served in a shaker pint at their South Street Seaport location. Thin tan head and black as night body which laced really well. Very smooth and silky mouthfeel with tiny carbination. Great chocolate and coffee undertones. A very fine representation of a stout. Enjoyed this one. By far the strongest offering of their year round brews.

The gums from the Oatmeal really stand out making the mouthfeel smooth and it goes down easily and kept me wanting more, despite it being a heavier beer. Subtle at first but the taste develops into a somewhat complex mixture of oatmeal and caramel/maple. Maybe a little chocolaty. No bitter aftertaste.

A - Really deep dark brown color with light brown hints around the edges; lightly tan head

S - Deep roasted coffee aromas; hints of bittersweet chocolate; light sweetness behind the roastiness...really nice here

T - Roasted coffee qualities; hints of chocolate and some sweetness...really didn't taste as good as it smelled, but certainly not bad

M - Too light for me in the style; and hinged on watery. Should have more body to carry through

D - Good, nice qualities in the taste; pleasant enough

Overall, not a bad brew and too bad the taste didn't quite achieve the same level of quality as the aroma. Worth a look.

Had at the Times Square location. Paired it with the smeared steak, and it was like they were made for each other. Beer was black with a thick cream colored had that stuck around forever. Smell was roasty and slightly chocolatey, also coffee notes. Taste was similar, very creamy with obvious oatmeal notes. Dry finish. Very good beer, defnitely one to have.

sampled at the Seaport location - tested the bock, IPA, and oatmeal and made an easy call in favor of the stout

the beer comes in a standard pint with a creamy khaki head over a dark brown colored ale, great retention and heavy lacing, typically attractive nitro appearance (which though not advertised, I'm assuming this is)

both the nose and palate feature a predominantly roasted malt body with supporting notes of cocoa powder and a hint of caramel malt, lightly hopped, mildly astringent roast finish with a dusting of dark chocolate, nothing exceptional, just a well-composed oatmeal stout with enough character to easily hold my interest

mouthfeel is medium-full, delicately carbonated, smooth and creamy

no problems drinking this one, and could easily have a couple more

I part company with the other reviewers on this one. It is a decent looking beer, with a dark mahogany hue. This dry coffee stout has quite a bit of carbonation for the style. There are some chocolatey notes but what is most memorable is the chalky flavor, the slightly burnt molasses note or two, and the coffee and mocha underpinnings. This one had no real discernible oatmeal creaminess one would expect for the style. I give this one a big miss.

Least impressive one I tried at the heartland. However award winning, thisbeer isn't far from an average guinness with a milkish spin.

In general term the beer looks and acts like a plain old stout- far from my favorite style. The only spin lies in the mouthfeel, which turned out to be like the taste of outdated or overheated milk somehow.

Not too shabby but definetly not my beer of choice.

Great looking beer with a nice head. Not too much lace though. The nose is raosty and nutty. Very good. The taste follows the nose; nice roastiness and bitterness from the burnt malt. The beer might be a little too creamy...almost like a nitro tap or something. Overall good though.

On tap at the Union Square location...

Appearance-thick black, decently formed head, lots of carbonation and sits well.

Smell-malty with a lot of breaded aromas, chocolate/coffee as well.

Taste/Mouthfeel-sweet upfront and much fuller on the back, lots of chocolate and other sweetness. Smooth, maybe a little lighter than some other stouts but enjoyable.

Drinkability-really nice, again it's light but full flavored, easy to drink.

Overall-by far the best beer I've had at Heartland, light but very flavorful and a great example of the style. Simply a great beer.

A- This beer pours a jet brown body with a cloud of light tan head floating in the middle of the glass and is a bit bubbly. The body is too dense to see any carbonation.

S-The big coffee aroma was a bit like coffee grounds with some dark chocolate roasted malt hints to follow.

T- There was a slight sweetness to the big coffee flavor and notes of cocoa with a watery taste to follow. The finish tasted like a cigar butt and was enhanced by the astringent mouthfeel.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a slight watery texture followed by an astringent finish.

D- This was a tough beer to get down. Some of the flavors were interesting but the astringency and taste grew as the beer warmed.

Had this at the South Street Seaport location - cool place w/ great burgers.

Good stout - nice dark color with a great creamy head. Smells and tastes very sweet with some coffee and chocolate. A little thin in texture for my tastes. I also like a little more alcohol for some bite. The carbonation was maybe a little low, but made for a pleasant drink. If you're there, try it out - you may like it. I'll definitely be going back to try some of their other beers (and food).

Got a pint of this at the brewery.

A: Pours a dark black body with a tan head with low retention and some lacing along the sides of the glass.

S: A dark, roasted smell with some coffee undertones which was quite enticing.

T: A nice, roasted taste, but seemed a little watered down. Some coffee notes were evident in the aftertaste.

M: Fairly thin and a little watery. This beer even seemed a little too thin, even for a stout.

D: An ok combination for mouthfeel and taste, but nothing overly impressive. I was expecting a little more from this beer. You can drink it, but I can't say it's a good representation of the style.

this one is smooth and robust, it is sweet in the bigining and bitter in the end. it is beautifly ballanced start to finish. i loved this one so much i had to bring a growler home with me!!! i wish that i dident have to drive 6 hours away to get this

On tap at the Heartland Brewery on 43rd.

The waiter really pushed this one on us. Blah blah blah awards blah blah blah. This guy was comparing all stouts to Guinness...come on! Honestly this stout did nothing for me. It pours a deep brown almost black color with red highlights and an off white head. The nose is of straight black coffee and burnt grain/malts. This stout is crazy high in licorice flavor, also burnt wood, burnt malts, coffee/mocha, and cream. Heavy medium body. I wouldn't even go for another shot on this one.
