Oak-Aged Rye is a complex yet clean tasting lager. It’s body and bouquet are the result of substituting 30% of the barley with rye, while introducing oak chips during fermentation and ageing. Oak Aged Rye is wonderful complement to veal, pork and chicken dishes

A: Amber-bronze with an off-white head, some retention & lacing.

S: Citrus-orange hop aroma with a mineral & woody spiciness; caramel; dark (rye) bread; light fruity ale esters.

T: Earthy-orange with a metallic spiciness; caramel; dark bread with pleasant sharpness from the rye. Nice fruitiness, presumably from British yeast. Slight residual sweetness is fairly well-balanced with hop bitterness.

M: Fairly well-attenuated, moderate body is smooth with a hint of hop acidity. Impressive for its weight. Modest carbonation.

D: Quite drinkable.

650ml bomber....no date coding but all sorts of promotional stuff about the OCB and assurances this is "craft brewed"....color me cynical.

Pours a limpid cider- amber with the expected small cap that goes to nothing quickly. Aroma..at least it isn't offensive this time...light grains and a funky woody smell like wet wood chips definitely not barreled. Same Trafalgar weak mouth feel...light malts however the rye (no matter how sparingly used) makes its mark with a spicy-malty tang ( more than the hops)... fast finish .

Thin but with more flavor than usual for Trafalgar 5%brews and a total absence of off tastes....that said, there is still that obnoxious vegital-funky yeast taste in a small tick just in the finish...it shares this with all the Trafalger brews I loath...time on the shelf will tell if this rotten funky taste takes over this brew like it has the other bottled Trafalgar offerings...that said... this is cleanest brew in a couple of seasons for this brewer but still pretty uninspired.

This bottle has been sitting in my fridge for a while, I finally decided to crack it open. It pours a hazy, cloudy orange with out much of a head. The aroma is a bit fruity with some sweet malt and tannin. The beer is dryer than expected from the aroma yet the fruitiness is still there. There is a some drying tannin matching up with a bit bitterness in the finish. There is a hint of spiciness from the rye, but it is mild. Light carbonation may be due to the age of the bottle. I would try this one again fresh, but otherwise probably wouldn't seek it out. I like that the brewery seems to be a bit experimental.

Pours a murky copper with next to no head that forms a ring around the glass

Aroma is sweeter than most ryes, much more of a sugary malt than I would expect

Taste is overly sweet. There are some wet cardboard notes for the malt backbone.

Mouthfeel is really terrible, almost no carbonation and a thin, watery mouthfeel is a recipe for a terrible, flat beer

Too sweet, too watery and thin to make up for anything that it actually has going for it...I didn't drink the whole 750ml

650ml bottle
5.0 ABV

I tried this beer on March 19, 2008 after purchasing from one of my local LCBO outlets. The beer poured a translucent orangy-red colour with very little head, and a lot of effervescence. The aroma was primarily sweet malt. The mouthfeel was medium bodied, somewhat dry, and with a lot of carbonation. The flavour was mainly malt with very little else. I didn't get any rye or hoppy feel from this brew.

Some gold in the light body, with a detergent soapy vine crown. Not great smell a little cheesy. On the thin side, the rye has attitude and for 5% it's got mouthburn. A weak lager but there is something to drink on a hot night.Typical Trafalgar except that the carbonation is understated.

Appearance: The beer poured a cloudy amber colour that was not unpleasant. The head diminished rather quickly with little to no lacing.

Smell: This was a rather sour smelling brew with a very mild oak smokiness to it. The smell was not at all promising.

Taste: Again the taste was inline with the sourness. As the beer approached room temperature the oakiness became more apparent unfortunatly so did the sourness.

Mouthfeel: Was not at all substantial. Reminiscent of a light beer. Somewhat watery. Not at all what I expected.

Drinkablity: I was almost unable to make it through the bomber so I really doubt I would be able to consume this over the course of an afternoon.

22oz bottle purchased from LCBO in Toronto. I had sworn off giving any more money to Trafalgar after too many quality control issues, but broke down in the store after having read that this beer was much better than its recent offerings (though still mediocre in general). The bottle opens without exploding - so that's already an improvement over the last Trafalgar bottle I've had. Though there is some unpleasant looking goop on the bottle where the cap was. Pours a clear gold with decent head and lacing and just a bit of carbonation. Light tinny/metallic aroma - not good. But the flavour is not bad - or at least not infected! The flavour is medium-bodied with just a hint of something oakish. It has a very smooth mouthfeel - likely from the low carbonation. A decent Trafalgar - and that's quite the compliment!

Well I didnt want to try this beer but it wasn't nearly as bad as some of their other offerings. I know it sounds like I am bashing them but I really hope they can get it together. Very little head from a firm pour. No lacing and the foam turns soapy. Has a clear amber color.

Smells of sweet malts, a weird fruit smell and faint hints of wood.

Tastes of fruits, a bit of rye, malts and sweet. Not the most drinkable beer (IMO)

Picked up at the LCBO.

Pours a slightly hazed copper, thin white head forms, almost none, thin collar, some lacing on the glass. Smell is almost like garbage, very buttery, spicy rye tang, light sourness, some citrus, feet, woody, mostly unpleasant. Taste is similar, very buttery, sour rye tang, oak, caramel, more butter, citrus, gross. Mouthfeel is light bodied, thin, with low to medium carbonation, undrinkable. Once again Trafalgar blesses us with a fantastic beer.

Good lord Trafalgar makes garish bottles. Nevertheless this is my first rye beer. Fridge temp. 5.00% abv, 650mL bottle. Into a wine glass.

Deep russet body; just a hint of a white head that doesn't stick around for long at all.

Nose is organic; leafy hop notes; some cakey citrus and bread; brown sugar and spice (cinnamon, vanilla seems especially prominent). Smells fantastic - a little forced and sweet though.

Palate is spicy and sweet (probably from the oak), with a bit of sourness. Not really my thing (a bit amateurish) but is representative of the style. Feel is a bit aggressive. Finish is metallic, bathed in spice. Vanilla, caramel, tangerine. Rather long, gets better as it progresses.

Not bad at all; much better than their Belgian Ale. I'd get this again.

Another bomber from Trafalgar. I'm always a bit apprehensive about these brews, but what the heck maybe this one will be good...

Not a lot of head on this. Managed to get a half inch or so by pouring from about a foot above the glass. Looks like a bit of haze in a mostly clear copper liquid. Nose is fruity, some citrus, some roasted grain and cideriness.

Tastes soapy, buttery, watery, woody, oakey, astringent, very dry, slightly tart and there's slighty coarse bitterness in the aftertaste.

Overall, it's not too bad. There's really no wow factor at all and there are too many rough edges. Not impressed.

Bottle from the LCBO- Decants a clear amber with a beige froth that is short lived. Nose is hops with lots of wood, perfume, candy, floral botanicals. This tastes pretty damn good. Very, very fresh hops, leafy greens, wood, and vanilla with caramel and candy. This is bitter as all get out in the finish. Very dry and a hop infused finish. My god, this is nice. Well done Trafalgar. This is the best beer from the brewery to date. I'm going to buy more tomorrow, and I've never said that about a Trafalgar beer.

I figured i would give this one a shot considering it actually received some decent reviews.

Served from a 650ml brown bomber into a pint glass. BB July 08

A- Slightly foggy amber color, decent head at first but diminishes quickly leaving slight lace.

S- Slightly oak, with some rye notes, and has a somewhat sour nose.

T- Some oak is noticed, as well as some rye bread, some vanilla and the slightest hint of caramel, not much to speak of in terms of hops. Slight bitterness in the finish. Is somewhat sour and astringent.

M- Moderate carbonation, light in body, somewhat powdery.

D- Surprisingly decent.

Overall not a bad offering from Trafalger, but not a great one either. This brewery has been all over the place in terms of balance in their brews, but this was is different. Maybe Trafalger is beginning to turn the page.

Bottle: Poured a light copper color ale with a medium foamy head with average retention and some lacing surprisingly. Aroma consists of dry malt with some notes rye. Taste is a mix between some refreshing rye notes with some very subtle and almost undetectable oak. Medium body with some average carbonation. Definitely better then the last couple of offering from this dubious brewer.

Pours a cloudy bronze colour with little or no head at all, zero lacing.

Very faint, weak aroma, some notes of sourdough and honey.

Decent taste of oak, honey and a hint of hay. Light on the hops, a tad watery and overall a little too weak, not what I was expecting.

Very thin mouthfeel, almost tasted flat, nothing special.

Very drinkable beer that goes down easy.

Comes in a bomber with thin gold foil on the neck and no information about the beer on the label other than the ambiguous 'Premium Ale'.

The pour reveals a clear copper amber ale with a couple bubbles floating up slowly. The head is very small and disappears in a flash. The aroma is sweetish with hay, a yeast sourness and some oak noticeable. Clover honey, butterscotch, vanilla and minty, herbal hops and some faint pepper show in the taste. The characteristic funkyness of this brewery is at a minimum in this brew. Oak flavors are light throughout. The mouthfeel is quite thin and sparsely carbonated. The quick finish is lightly bitter.

This is an OK beer. Light in the oak department (which is a good thing to me) with some funky yeasty flavors going on. Worth a try but nothing amazing.

Well, I'm in a state of delighted shock. Trafalgar generally makes lousy beer - its one of the facts of life. I usually buy their stuff as one offs just to add a notch to my beer belt. However, I'll be buying a few more of these as its actually a decent brew.

That's right, folks - a good beer from Trafalgar. It lacks the typical thin-bodied, soapy, headless, and generally lifeless profile of a Trafalgar. Pours up with a decent head, leaves good lace, and has a nice grapefruity aroma from good quality hops. The mouthfeel is still slightly thin, but nicely offset by proper hopping and maltiness. Pleasantly bitter, but not heavy handed.

Tasty and drinkable. I hope this is a harbinger of good things to come from this brewery. Get out there and buy a few and then get hold of Trafalgar and tell them they've finally got it right. Bravo!
