Reviewed on 10/3/08. On cask at Ginger Man. Pours black with a small tan head (surprising for a cask beer). Aroma of buttered popcorn and roasted malt. Flavor of more buttered popcorn, roasted malt, and slight chocolate. Weak bodied. Meh, this was not very good. Bad flavors and weak mouthfeel.

Pours a black stout-like appearance with a coarse and bubbly tan head. Nose is of roasted malt and barley. Taste is heavy on roasted malts, some coffee and charcoal as well. Pleasant mouthfeel and good carbonation with a crispy dry finish. Simple but good and solid. I enjoyed this on-tap at the brewery tasting room.

On tap at the brewery.
A - Pours a deep dark brown color. Nice foamy 1/4 inch head.
S - Hint of chocolate, not very strong and not much else detected.
T - Where the smell cam up short, the taste made up for it. Smooth chocolate/coffee flavor.
M - Medium body, nice finish.
D - Very drinkable. A good one from Blue Point. Unfortunately, not one of their year round beers.

Dark yet clear chestnut with a modest grey-sand colored head. Roasted chicory and chocolate aromas with sour earthy notes. Tastes much darker than it looks or smells, with clear black patent malt flavors coming to the fore. Slightly charred corn tortillas and a bit of sour earth-flavored twang. Smooth chocolate milk finish. Bready topsoil in the aftertaste. Medium carbonation and body; dry but with a chocolate sweetness that rounds off all the potential angularity of the mouthfeel. A rather tasty brown porter.

Had this one on-tap at the brewery. I am a big fan of porters, so I was eager to try this one. It pours a dark, deep brown with a thin tan head. The smell is not overwhelming, but has hints of chocolate and coffee.
Beyond that, this is an underwhelming flavor. The first thing I noticed was how thin the body was. This would be ok for the style, except it was accompanied by a watered-down taste to it as well. Beyond the watery taste, there were notes of chocolate and caramel, and a flavor I can only describe as sour milk. It wasn't overwhelming but it was noticeable.
This beer isn't terrible, but it's a sub-par porter that should have been better conceived.

Poured a deep black hue with a two finger foamy caramel head. There was good retention and good sticky lacing.
The smell featured solid burnt grain and chocolate malt aromas with a hint of caramel malt.
The taste consisted of a complex and solid grain bill. Good cocoa, coffee and smoked elements present.
The mouthfeel was of medium fullness with a dry finish.
Overall a very nice rendition of the style. Very drinkable and something I hope they keep around.
