Old Toad Nut Brown

This is a traditional Northern English Brown Ale that has a nutty malty aroma with a smooth hop finish. The beer is fermented a couple of degrees warmer than our other beers to give it a little more of a fruity winy aroma that is characteristic of the style. Brewed with Pale Ale, Cara-munich, Biscuit, and Chocolate Malts with Kent Goldings and First Gold Hops.

A wonderful nutty smell makes way to an equally nutty taste in this outstanding nut brown ale. I was impressed with the brown hues that brought a deep mahogony colour in the glass. a nice head sits on top with little lace effect. A great beer to get the entire experience of the Old Toad.

This beer poured out as a nice brown color, there was some head on top and but mostly just a thin white film by the time it got to me. The lacing was very thin just left a fee scattered suds on the glass. The smell of the beer had a nutty coffee like aroma. The taste of the beer is the same as the smell, it's got a big roasted flavor with a good strong bitterness in the end. The mouthfeel was pretty smooth and drinkable. Overall I found this beer to be too roasted for a nut brown ale, it was flavored more like a stout. Worth trying for sure.

Pours a very dark brown with a thin tan head and a bit of lacing as it goes down. It has a nice nutty smell that mixes with the toasted malt. The taste is of the nuts upfront followed by an odd metallic and acidic flavor. I don't know if the tap lines were dirty or what but there was a very odd finish to this brew. As this brew warmed, the odd skunky flavor increased and really drew my attention away from all of the nice things that were going on. This was definitely not the smooth nut brown that I would expect.

The beer pours a nice brown color with a thick frothy tan head that slowly fades to lacing. The aroma is decent. It has a crystal and roasted malt scent that dry and toastey with just a bit of malt sweetness. The taste is decent as well. It has a wonderful dry roasted character that goes down smooth and finishes with just a hint of maltiness. The mouthfeel is fine. It is a medium bodied beer with adequate carbonation. This is a very drinkable brown ale. It's not overly complex, but it's got a fair amount of character.

Served on tap at The Old Toad in Rochester, NY a few hours ago into a pint glass.

A Very basic looking brown ale with minimal head that dissapeared rather quickly.

S Nuts! I loved the smell of this beer. It was fun to try to pick out which nuts I was smelling. Walnuts, hazelnuts, peanuts? There was some alcohol to the nose too and some classic "ale" smell but it was that nut smell that was really distinctive.

T A wonderfully appropriate pallate of nuts, some malt and alcohol which (o.k. maybe I was influenced by being in the English pub) was very English. A reasonably strong ale on the thin side.

M Thin but strong, filling, attention getting.

D Really great. Had I not just had an appetizer and dinner I could have thrown back 3 or 4 of these. I think that it was brewed with multiples in mind.

Notes: Really appreciate that this beer, brewed for the Old Toad, is so English in its character.

Ahh The Old Toad.

I tried this beer one night because it was on special for $3 a pint I believe. I was watching it come out of the tap for others and decided the color was interesting enough for me to try.

I love the smell of this ale.

The taste is rich, nutty, and smooth. Not too hoppy, a little bit sweet at the end. Reminds me of Pecans.

I can taste the malt and its got hops. A very good brown with conventional brown appearance and tan head. Nutty carmel sweetness. A richness to it A standout in the lineup. Very drinkable. You can have this by itself but it complemented the fat burner and the cream porter. It can replace a semi-sweet white wine in a meal.

Solid beer all the way around. The casked conditioned presentation brings out the smoothness as well as a nutty but welcome sweetness. Leaves the palette coated with a creamy, nutty caramel flavor. A tasty brew enjoyed in an authentic British pub (called The Old Toad), at which the cellarmanship is unequalled. Well done.
