A - Pours a deep golden hue, not so much brown, and is capped with a short-lived head, no lace.

S - Honey and barley malt, lightly toasted bread, granola.

T - Crazy banana pudding nuances abound, in addition to some minerality and contintental hop. Tastes fairly delicious.

M - Silky.

O - This is a very nice beer.

Good frothy cola brown pour. Weird something like this gives off a banana aroma. I guess the other smell is wheat, although its a little stronger than usual.

Taste was more yeast and clove than I was hoping for. Dark caramel, tea leaves and bready. A good deal of complexities, but not really up my alley. Drank it first from Koppa's in Milwaukee, gave it another try, just can't get into what it brings to the table. Doesn't falter because of lack of taste, I just can't get too much into dunkels still.

12oz. bottle served into a weissbier glass

Pours a burnt-orange color, bordering on amber. It looks a lot like an IPA in some respects. About a finger's worth of chalk-white head bubbles up, lacing in thin arches.

I remember that Bubbalicious used to have a cola flavored bubblegum when I was a kid. Well, this beer smells just like that gum. Coca-Cola sweetness meets estery bubblegum sugaryness. Much, much less banana aroma than I expected. The cloves instead play off of some honest-to-goodness plum.

The taste follows the nose, for the most part. Heavy clove accents the entire drink. Some cola sweetness, some nutty flavors. Plenty of wheat bread or wheat muffins, especially on the toasty finish.

The mouthfeel is dissappointing, though not bad. It's too thin, nearly watery. And it doesn't have enough carbonation to make up for it. It's certainly below average in terms of mouthfeel. Overall, this is a pretty good Dunkelweizen. It's not revelatory by any stretch of the imagination, but it delivers solid flavors.

Bottle picked up at Chevy Chase in DC. Served in a weizen glass.

Pour brings a somewhat-muddy light caramel brew that isn't terribly hazy. Off-white head with a bit of lacing and not too much retention. The nose brings some light dark malts and even a hint of chocolate along with clove and a bit of banana. The taste doesn't offer too much more and is a bit plain--it's almost as if the malt was to be the focus in this beer rather than the yeast. Mouthfeel is fairly light with a touch of carbonation. Drinks decently enough, but there was nothing really getting me to finish the bottle.

Hacker-Pschorr Weisse Dark

Appearance: light brown, small head, and good lacing.

Smell: wheat, spices, and banana.

Taste: wheat, cloves, subtle banana, and faint hops.

Mouthfeel: medium-light and smooth.

Appearance - Nice dark and more importantly, cloudy and gushing with carbonation after the pour.

Smell - Fruity as it should be with good constituents, but I'd love if it was stronger.

Taste - Not as fruity as its Franzy counterpart which I have somewhat often and enjoy. Solid on all counts though, nice wheat background but somewhat plain tasting.

Mouthfeel - Its a bit fizzy and carbonated but its spot on for the style.

Drinkability - Oddly, this may be more drinkable overall than even some other dunkelwizens I enjoy more on a per bottle basis.

Overall the appearance and scent over promise on the taste but its not really a grave offense for this style. Personally I prefer weizens overall which have a more pronounced fruity flavor but I think everyone should try this at least once to see if it caters more to their personal preferences. There is nothing bad about it all.

An Austrian-American neighbor turned me onto this beer over a decade ago back when it was more readily available in bomber size bottles before the Paulaner merger. A most exceptional dunkle-weiss in most respects although I think it has gone down a bit in quality over the years from mass production. I do remember when availability of this beer would be hit or miss back in the day from import shortages here in the States.

Current formulation pours with an extremely thick head into a fluted glass no matter how careful you are. Thick bandy lacing. Mouthfeel is wet and warm. Taste is nice and roasted, thoughts of hot fresh bread with hints of caramel and sweet dried fruits assail me with every sip. A bit of acidicness is prevalent when drinking.

This beer is best experienced when combined with a ligher beer like Hoegaarden White. Enjoy.

Like with current Paulaners a 6 or 12 pack may contain a sour stinker, if you drink this and it's sour or metallic tasting then it's gone over, pour it out and move along to the next.

Poured into Weihenstephaner Weissebier Glass.

Appearance: Dark amber/brown, very little head and little lacing. Darker than any dunkle I've had to date.

Smell: Sweet malty aroma, caramel malt dominates, no real scent of banana or clove that you might expect.

Taste: Sweet caramel malt, some spice, delicious and unique and honestly unexpected for a weissebier.

Mouth feel: Smooth, well carbonated.

Drinkability: Drinkable, nice flavor.

A: Dark brown pour with a two finger brownish white fluffy head. Little lacing and decent retention.

S: Dark fruits and roasted malts. Some sweetness and spiciness in there as well.

T: Spicy banana and dark fruits. Very similar to the smell. Caramel and a bit more watered down than I expected.

MF: Medium bodied, but still not what I wanted from this one.

D: Very high. For all its flaws this beer was very drinkable.

Poured into a stange glass. Beer is brown and hazy with a thick head that falls away leaving very little lacing on the glass. Carbonation moderate. Looks OK.

Aroma is pretty banana-y, I like it.

Beer is medium bodied and really creamy, a very good beer. Finishes nicely, not dry. Good fruit flavors on the midpalate, a really good dunkelweiss, even if its misspelled.

12 ounce bottle poured cold into tall pilsner stein.

A) Shade lighter than cola. Small lacy head. Hazy but transparent.

S) Malty sweet. Mild alcohol. Fruity undertone.

T) Caramel, cooked malt. Mild, barely detectable hops. Smooth and uncomplicated

M) Carbonation fell quickly until noticably flat.

D) A good example of this category.

A nice hazy brown German beer with a good frothy light tan head. Goes to lacing. Nice even carbonation. The aroma is sweet and nutty. Flavor is very smooth, malty, nutty with a slight buttery finish. Banana too. Medium body and mouthfeel. Flavor is good, but a little "soft" in the finish. Still, a top-notch dunkelweizen.

I picked this bottle up for a very reasonable price, somewhere around $1.75. From looking at the bottom of the bottle (after the pour), the brew appears to have been bottle conditioned. The brew shines a cloudy amber-brown. A pretty white head slims down to a silky rim environment. It smells of yeast, wheat bread, and banana, but the aromas are toasted to a pleasant degree.

A lot of acidity comes out first with the initial sip. Muted fruit, and a buttery finish. Yeasty on the tongue. Thin in the flavor category. Noticeable attenuation. Medium-bodied. Somewhat bland & a little disappointing. I've also discovered a "Produced On" indicator on the bottom-right corner of the label: 10/08. Tell me that's a mistake...

Out of a bomber bottle this beer was a root-beer-brown color with a finger of khaki head. The retention was poor and the lacing was sparse in scattered, broken bands. The aroma was of caramel malt, chocolate malt, light toasted malt, nuts and (curiously) malt extract. The flavors were of toasted malt, the tang of wheat, caramel malt and hints of crappy coffee. Slightly tart and a bitterness of citrus peel and sharp hops came through on the finish. Didn't exactly land the dismount. The mouthfeel was average, the body medium and the carbonation good.

A= My bottle reads Weisse Dark which I assume is the same beer as the Dunkle. If it's not someone let me know so I can save it before it's deleted. The pour is a nice hazy brown color. A beautiful off white head rises up to three fingers and holds excellent retention and great lacing. One of the best dunkles I've ever seen.

S= Loads of bannana is the first thing I notice. I can smell the bannana from a few feet away from the glass. There is a great wheat smell coming from beneath the bannana. It really reminds me of bannana bread. Awesome smell.

T= The taste is just as amazing as the smell. Less bananna in the taste which is a little refreshing otherwise it may just taste like candy. The bannanas are still there however and share equal value as the strong wheat taste. There is a little caramelly malt to it but not much.

M= Quite creamy in feel. Really quite nice. For sure on the creamy side of a dunkel.

D= This beer is an amazing Dunkel. I'll be buying more of this for sure. It's no Vitus but it's up there just as much. A little less intense than the Vitus but worth every penny and it's a little more avalible to me.

Pours a slightly hazed dark amber color with a two finger yellowed white head that clings to everything. Popping the cap sends sweet wheat malts aromas wafting towards my being. Hints of various fruits, lots of clove and some banana round out the nose quite well. The taste of this pulls me in a couple of directions. I'm first hit with some caramel, burnt sugar, and plums. That is followed up by and hint of lemon, clove and banana. First I think bock then its clear the hefe is in the house. Leaves a lingering spicy wheat taste on the tongue. Medium body, creamy smooth mouthfeel, lots of carbonation. Not usually something I would pick up, but I rather enjoyed this one. I could see a few of these on a warm day in my future.

poured into goblet. large, rocky white head, rustic reddish brown with golden edges. nicely retained head. smells like wheat, banana, and a fair dose of clove. fairly caramel-malt sweet on the nose as well. i take a nice quaff and its got good spice zip up front that quickly turns sweeter, with banana and malts coming in nicely. very bready all the way through, has good medicinal clove and banana interplay on the mild finish. excellent mouthfeel; very delicate and balanced well with the carbonation. could drink these all day. an excellent dukelweizen.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a nonic pint.

A: Nice cream-colored head that diminishes to a film. Medium brown, opaque liquid.

S: Banana, brown bread, and cloves are noticeable right off.

T: Spicy banana bread with cloves. Not too sweet, which would ruin it. You can really tast the nutty goodness of the roasted wheat. Very nice.

M: Creamy with medium body. Delectable and perfect for the style.

D: One taste and I wanted to guzzle the whole glass down. This is what you want in a brew. Would be good any time of year. Maybe not quite as good as Weihenstephaner's version, but very close. Another wonderful example of my favorite style of beer.

12 oz bottle, produced on 10/09.

Pours a reddish brown with yellow/orange at the thin part of the weizen glass. The head is active, off-white, and large, but it recedes quickly.

There is an abundance of lemon and banana in the scent, with some slight wheat and clove.

The taste is a bit more caramally, but also a bit watery. There is a significant amount of clove in the taste along with a hint of lemon and banana.

Overall it is a pleasant beer, would be a thirst quencher in the summer.

Pours a dark oakish color with a yellow-ish hue. Head was light and khaki in color and bubbly and foamy in texture; it was about 3/4 in thick. Aroma was a relatively strong smell of raisin bread. Taste was a mix of sweet wheat, cloves, and a kick of spiciness to go down. Great body, decent thickness and perfect amount of carbonation. Not too heavy and a great taste, so I could definitely have at least 3 in a row if I wanted.

Pours a hazy apple cider brown with a fluffy eggshell-white head. Good retention, good lacing.

Spicy fruit and clove aromas, yeast and wheat.

Sweet wheat and yeast flavors, with some spicy notes and light bitter grain husk. Long sweet grainy finish. Typical flavors of the style, although these aren't quite as bright as some other producers of this style.

Iced tea apperance, cloudy. Minimal head from easy pour.
Wheat grains fill the nose. Slight sweetness to it. Some earthy tones with clove and maybe lemon grass.
Grain flavors mix with hints of sweet malt. Some grainy astringant flavors mid to finish. A little bannana too. Clove finishes strong and stay on palid.
Hardy mouthfeel, grains seem to beef up drink.
Noticed production date of 11/07. Neverless enjoyable brew and look forward to sampling other offerings from brewer.

This is one of the best dark wheat beers in the world. The taste is so smooth for a wheat beer. A lot of wheat beers will leave a funny flavor if your not used to drinking them, but this one is so smooth. Color is exceptional and you have to pour this beer in a tall glass and watch the beautiful bubbles. Its magical.
