Cogan's is good local spot to get a decent pizza and enjoy a pretty good variety of beers and ales on tap and bottled. During peak times the place is rather lively. Service is good and food typically well prepared. A good recommendation for a bite to eat and a great brew selection.

Cogan's is a funky spot and apparently has quite a bit of history. It used to be a punk-rock joint several years ago. I heard a story about one night when it got some 142 citations for about anything you can think of. These days, it seems a lot more tame. It's got a great beer selection, from local brews to stellar Belgians and Germans. I didn't try the food, but from the smell of the place, I bet the pizza is awesome. The place was packed the night I went - must be for a good reason. It's an interesting combination of more well-to-do folks and hipsters with tattoos all over. If you can fit somewhere in between, I recommend it.

Frequent this place while I'm working in Norfolk, seems to be a popular hang out with my co-workers. Definitely a hipster bar, not saying that is a bad thing, with lots of random art and decor all over the place. Usually has quite a crowd and the enclosed outdoor seating is nice. 33 beers on tap that range from $3 - $6.5 and a wide variety of styles. Happy hour is Mon-Fri from 11am to 7pm and "Pint Night" is on Tuesday until 7pm and all beers $5 and under are half off. The pizza there is very good and haven't had one I don't like.

If you're in the area and don't mind the hipster crowd this place is a nice stop to get some good beer and pizza without breaking the bank.

I love Cogan's. The pizza is really good, especially the Philly and California Dreamin'. My friends and I go here a few times a month and get drinks and hang out on their outside patio. Thankfully, the patio is closed in and has great heaters in the winter for those who don't want to sit in the usually overpacked restaurant. The inside is painted with gorillas, pin-up girls, and cosmos and planets; it also has a lot of odds and ends and beer signs. Its usually fairly clean in there and has a great environment. You'll get mostly every type of person in there too, which is a plus, but this is certainly a trendy spot of sorts in the community.
The beer selection is 32 beers on tap and many others available in bottle. However, living in the area and frequenting the place regularly, people who usually go there tend to drink either PBR or Aventinus (low to high spectrum I know) for the most part, but they do have some great beer available. The bartenders are friendly and know their beverages. The waitstaff though is what you would typically expect.
If you ever come to Norfolk, Cogan's is definitely where you want to grab a drink and get a good slice.

Went during happy hour (m-f 11am -7 $1 off micros, $4 aventinus) after just getting off of plane (needed lunch)

Don't go for food. Pizza buffet was dissappointing, under cooked, not very good.

Beer selection was good. 33 taps -- Arrogant Bastard was on tap and in top form. Also DFH 90 minute (served in a pint glass for 3.50)

Should have gotten Clipper City Loose Cannon HOP3 which was also on tap -- got later in the day in bottles from Total Wine and it was fabulous. Other tap selections included Aventinus, Bells, Sierra, Rogue, Abita, Magic Hat, mainstream imports (stella, pilsner urq, smithicks, guinness, fosters) and PBR

Atmosphere was kitschy with a comic book/antique toy/monster movie theme

Heard this underwent a management change so I had to see if the place was different. It sorta is. They still have 32 taps or something like that, and a decent bottle selection. Mainly American micros, although they emphasize the Weihenstephaner line with bottles and had Vitus on tap. The vibe is still the same, with goofy shit on the wall and a laidback atmosphere, conducive to family dining inside or on the patio during dinnertime and being a beer bar at night. The beer is actually reasonably priced, but I put a bit pricey because of the food. The $6 breadsticks my wife ordered were fine, but not $6, but worse, the pizza sucked. We got a $15 5-cheese pizza to split with friends and while two slices were filling, the cheese was falling off, there parts of the pizza not covered and they didn't slice it (WTF?). Not the food quality this place used to have, but still a nice beer bar.

Neat pizza place with an uber hipster feel. Lots of weird art all over the place, very eccentric decor and a bunch of random nicknacks all over the place. Definitely unique.

The beers were all very fresh and the selection was pretty good. Probably between 20 and 25 really good beers on tap.

Service was friendly, but a bit slow. Our waiter knew the beer list and what was new/out right away.

Fantastic pizza and everything is reasonably priced. Definitely a place to check out if you are in the area.

My first impression came from the smell outside. I smelled pizza in the air, and it smelled like heaven...I was looking forward to getting a slice.

I grabbed a beer from the bartender when I first walked in, and he acted like he was going out of his way to help me. A bad second impression. I meandered for a bit before sitting down at a table. I drank the rest of my beer and tried to signal to one of the servers that I needed another. Apparently he thought I was hitting on him, because he wouldn't even approach me. Several minutes later I stood up and got my own menu.

From that point on the service was fine. The waitress that finally did get to me was very attentive, knew her business, filled my water regularly, and did so promptly and with a smile.

If it weren't for my initial service, I'd give Cogan's a 10/10. As it stands, it gets a 9/10. The beer selection was excellent, served in a proper glass, and the pizza was great. Hopefully next time I make it back to the Norfolk area the service will be better.

A & Q: Indeed, former "dive bar" that mostly focused on shows (some of which my former band played), so it was interesting to come back here and relax in an atmosphere that was a lot more pleasant to pretty much all the senses. They did a great job remodeling the place, yet keeping the standard characteristics that made it an "Instant Art" bar. Whatever that means. Still, nice ambience. Some mis-matched seats, etc. that gave it some character, which could've been better. It still retained a touch of class though, so they get some credit for trying.

Ser: The bartender was amiable, but did not have the technique of the proper pour down. Would pretty much pour pints straight down the middle, froth 'em over, tilt out the enormous head in a weird jerky kind of motion. She did keep the drinks coming though, so I guess that's what matters in the end. Also, as a side-note (and this is not her fault), I order a Chimay Grande Reserve and find that somebody had stolen the goblets!! So don't steal good glassware from good bars!

Sel: 33 beers on tap and an enticing bottle list. Good selection with reasonable prices make this an enjoyable place to have a few.

F: The pizza is damn amazing. I recommend the five-cheese if you dig ricotta on your pizza as much as I do. As for anything else on the menu, I wouldn't have a clue, but every time I've been here I opt for their pizza, which is worth it in and of itself.

Overall, a nicely revamped place that has done well for itself. Relaxing environment, good selection, and even better pizza make it worth the trip.

Cogan's is a great place to get some off the wall wonderful pie. By pie I mean pizza. They have a couple of great "gravy' choices and even better toppings. Not in the mood for pie, get the meatballs- they are off the heeaazzzaaayyyy! Wonderful tap selection with bartenders that know their stuff, most of the time at least. Try the Stone Smoke Porter, if it's still there... smokey, dense, and WOW! It will kick your ass. If you aren't in the mood for a smokey beer, try something lighter such as the Dogfish IPA, again, if it's there. One warning- if you have anything against clowns- don't go in, they're all over the walls.
