Cogan's is good local spot to get a decent pizza and enjoy a pretty good variety of beers and ales on tap and bottled. During peak times the place is rather lively. Service is good and food typically well prepared. A good recommendation for a bite to eat and a great brew selection.

Heard this underwent a management change so I had to see if the place was different. It sorta is. They still have 32 taps or something like that, and a decent bottle selection. Mainly American micros, although they emphasize the Weihenstephaner line with bottles and had Vitus on tap. The vibe is still the same, with goofy shit on the wall and a laidback atmosphere, conducive to family dining inside or on the patio during dinnertime and being a beer bar at night. The beer is actually reasonably priced, but I put a bit pricey because of the food. The $6 breadsticks my wife ordered were fine, but not $6, but worse, the pizza sucked. We got a $15 5-cheese pizza to split with friends and while two slices were filling, the cheese was falling off, there parts of the pizza not covered and they didn't slice it (WTF?). Not the food quality this place used to have, but still a nice beer bar.

Cogan's is a funky spot and apparently has quite a bit of history. It used to be a punk-rock joint several years ago. I heard a story about one night when it got some 142 citations for about anything you can think of. These days, it seems a lot more tame. It's got a great beer selection, from local brews to stellar Belgians and Germans. I didn't try the food, but from the smell of the place, I bet the pizza is awesome. The place was packed the night I went - must be for a good reason. It's an interesting combination of more well-to-do folks and hipsters with tattoos all over. If you can fit somewhere in between, I recommend it.

There's nothing technically wrong with Cogan's Pizza, they have delicious pizza and an adequate tap and bottle list. I'd say the main problem is they don't really have anything that stands out, nothing special (at least on my visit). All their beers are very common and can be picked up at Total Wine right around the corner.
I am an admitted ticker but I literally could not find anything good I haven't had before, and for a place where I heard beer was the focal point, this just left me with a meh feeling. Just seems like they were geared for mainstream, which is fine, but it just isn't attractive enough for me to return.
But I am not going to rate this poorly because of this. If I were just your average consumer and not a beer geek I would have been floored by their selection since there are a lot of beers to choose from that encompass many styles. Couldn't really ask for more in a pizza place.

A & Q: Indeed, former "dive bar" that mostly focused on shows (some of which my former band played), so it was interesting to come back here and relax in an atmosphere that was a lot more pleasant to pretty much all the senses. They did a great job remodeling the place, yet keeping the standard characteristics that made it an "Instant Art" bar. Whatever that means. Still, nice ambience. Some mis-matched seats, etc. that gave it some character, which could've been better. It still retained a touch of class though, so they get some credit for trying.
Ser: The bartender was amiable, but did not have the technique of the proper pour down. Would pretty much pour pints straight down the middle, froth 'em over, tilt out the enormous head in a weird jerky kind of motion. She did keep the drinks coming though, so I guess that's what matters in the end. Also, as a side-note (and this is not her fault), I order a Chimay Grande Reserve and find that somebody had stolen the goblets!! So don't steal good glassware from good bars!
Sel: 33 beers on tap and an enticing bottle list. Good selection with reasonable prices make this an enjoyable place to have a few.
F: The pizza is damn amazing. I recommend the five-cheese if you dig ricotta on your pizza as much as I do. As for anything else on the menu, I wouldn't have a clue, but every time I've been here I opt for their pizza, which is worth it in and of itself.
Overall, a nicely revamped place that has done well for itself. Relaxing environment, good selection, and even better pizza make it worth the trip.

This was once a dive, basically a place where local heavy metal bands could get a gig. Now it's an "Instant Art" bar..not sure what that means but the good thing is they have a good beer selection. The place is brightly decorated with pastel colors, but not too bright to be annoying. The food is good. I've had subs here that are great with large potions, and the pizza is supposedly good too. Normally around 30 taps with some great and not-so-great beers it there, but there should be something for any beer lover. Some Stone, dogfish head, Aventinus, a few belgians...overall good selection. Service is decent, as I never had to wait for a refill. Overall good place to get a beer & eat, but nothing to write home about. The main thing here is a good selection.

My first impression came from the smell outside. I smelled pizza in the air, and it smelled like heaven...I was looking forward to getting a slice.
I grabbed a beer from the bartender when I first walked in, and he acted like he was going out of his way to help me. A bad second impression. I meandered for a bit before sitting down at a table. I drank the rest of my beer and tried to signal to one of the servers that I needed another. Apparently he thought I was hitting on him, because he wouldn't even approach me. Several minutes later I stood up and got my own menu.
From that point on the service was fine. The waitress that finally did get to me was very attentive, knew her business, filled my water regularly, and did so promptly and with a smile.
If it weren't for my initial service, I'd give Cogan's a 10/10. As it stands, it gets a 9/10. The beer selection was excellent, served in a proper glass, and the pizza was great. Hopefully next time I make it back to the Norfolk area the service will be better.

Went during happy hour (m-f 11am -7 $1 off micros, $4 aventinus) after just getting off of plane (needed lunch)
Don't go for food. Pizza buffet was dissappointing, under cooked, not very good.
Beer selection was good. 33 taps -- Arrogant Bastard was on tap and in top form. Also DFH 90 minute (served in a pint glass for 3.50)
Should have gotten Clipper City Loose Cannon HOP3 which was also on tap -- got later in the day in bottles from Total Wine and it was fabulous. Other tap selections included Aventinus, Bells, Sierra, Rogue, Abita, Magic Hat, mainstream imports (stella, pilsner urq, smithicks, guinness, fosters) and PBR
Atmosphere was kitschy with a comic book/antique toy/monster movie theme

I used to love Cogan's but now I'd say it's more of a "like". Very casual neighborhood joint. Funky red walls and eclectic is definitely the word for the interior. Beer selection is good to very good....they some good tap and bottle choices. Weinstephaner Hefe-Weisse, Dogfish Head 60 Minute IPA, Aventinus are some of the better choices. Their pizza used to be fantastic, but my past several visits something seems to be lacking. They have the Baker's Crust Oven bakin' em up. And a wide range of toppings including goat cheese, zucchini, broccoli, pineapple, anchovies (thank God some places till have anchovy pizza). The calamari on top of the caesar salad is good! Outdoor covered patio doesn't have the greatest view but is a nice escape if it is smoky inside. BUT they seem to allow smoking in there too, and when they close the tent-sides it's not good. Inside they allow smoking at the bar...and it is basically one room. This is like only allowing peeing at one end of the pool. After 9 pm (I think) they allow smoking at tables too. I've sort of stopped going because of two reasons... the cigarette smoke sucks, and the pizza and calamari don't seem as good as they used to.

I love Cogan's. The pizza is really good, especially the Philly and California Dreamin'. My friends and I go here a few times a month and get drinks and hang out on their outside patio. Thankfully, the patio is closed in and has great heaters in the winter for those who don't want to sit in the usually overpacked restaurant. The inside is painted with gorillas, pin-up girls, and cosmos and planets; it also has a lot of odds and ends and beer signs. Its usually fairly clean in there and has a great environment. You'll get mostly every type of person in there too, which is a plus, but this is certainly a trendy spot of sorts in the community.
The beer selection is 32 beers on tap and many others available in bottle. However, living in the area and frequenting the place regularly, people who usually go there tend to drink either PBR or Aventinus (low to high spectrum I know) for the most part, but they do have some great beer available. The bartenders are friendly and know their beverages. The waitstaff though is what you would typically expect.
If you ever come to Norfolk, Cogan's is definitely where you want to grab a drink and get a good slice.
