355ml little stubby bottle poured into pint glass 5/11/11

A reddish amber with loads of tiny bubbles being pumped out from all over the glass, thumbs width of light tan film has a short life but leaves a couple rings of lace

S soapy molasses and a little cola

T a little nutty raisin and the soap I smell is gone, not that bad actually, I thought this would be complete swill but it's decent

M a little thin but enough carbonation to give it some life, flavors linger but faint

O a surprise considering I though it was another Corona in a brown bottle, unlike Corona I could drink this without problems

nothing worth looking for but it would make a great substitute for Mexican tap water, perhaps the best thing I've had from the country

Poured out of a bottle into a chilled mug.

Appearance is a medium brown with a fizzy head that doesn't stick around for long.

Smell is a light nutty roastiness and perhaps a little sweet.

Taste is a light nuttiness with a little bit of roast. Really no hops to speak of and the taste drops off fairly quickly. Mouthfeel is thin.

I do enjoy this beer with mexican food but that is about it. I seriously doubt I would ever drink it on a regular basis. However it is probably my favorite mexican lager.

A: Amber color. Almost no head which disappears almost immediately and leaves no lacing.

S: I caught there a light maltiness, but overall the smell is very poor.

T: Malts are predominating, light at first but finishes with a pleasant roasted yet sweet aftertaste. Alcohol is also present despite the relatively low ABV.

M: Good carbonation for this refreshing beer.

O: This is not a great brew. But it could have been worse for just a thirst-quenching beer.

Poured into a pint.

Excellent clarity, a bright reddened amber color. Through a terribly rough pour - rougher than I poured my Nitro Milk Stout (in which the bottle tells you to pour roughly, straight down) - I get barely any head, which recedes immediately. Miniscule flecks of lace dot the glass.

Smells skunky. There's certainly some caramel/amber malt thrown in there, but it's likely more for color than flavor.

Tastes skunked too, despite the brown bottle. Minor sweetness, stale bread crusts, apparent alcohol flavor.

Crisp, with high carbonation. Sticky with a lingering bitter/skunky aftertaste.

Overall this is one of the better Mexican lagers, but still nothing to write home about. This is unfortunately much better with a lime.

From my beer journal. Originally reviewed on July 19, 2011

A: Nice color. Very caramel throughout. Light cream colored head that quickly dissipated to nothing.

S: Got some malt with a very light roastiness

T: Very light roasted chocolate flavor. Mostly malts take over this beer but there is a hint of bitterness to finish. It actually ended very smoothly.

M: Pretty good mouthfeel. This beer is refreshing and has carbonation with a good bite to it.

O: Seen this around forever without putting much thought to it. And you know what? It really isn't terrible. I'd put this beer ahead of many.

Poured from bottles into 1/2 liter stien, given the season, nice garnet tawny hue with minamal head and off white lite lacing.

Sweet malty grain with a caramel and toast quality to the aroma.

Flavors seem of lightly toasted bread and graininess with a kiss of hop bitterness and spice.

Lightly carbonated and medium mouthfeel make this an easy drinker & the wife is grooving on this one currently.

Hey, it is what it is & I like it. Local grocer is running a deal too, $12 a 12pk.

Poured into a regular pint glass.

A - Poured clear brown color with medium head that quickly dissipated leaving average lacing around the glass.

S - Malts with bready yeast and caramel hints.

T - Sweet malts to start with caramel, fruits and a slightly hoppy flavor following and a slightly dry finish.

M - Light bodied with above average carbonation.

O - Not bad overall, just about average. Good choice of beer from mexican line up. I would recommend it over other mexican beers.

Slight caramel flavor greets the tongue. Quite spritzy and makes a nice fizzy mouthful. Brownish amber in the glass. Decent head and the carbonation lasts pretty well. It tastes much like adjunct-type lagers though it does have a touch of bitterness. I wouldn't call it a hoppy taste, as there is no hint of floral flavors. Smell is not particularly pleasant, more like beer soaked into a beer mat. Aftertaste is kind of dirty and a little sour, like it has a touch of burnt malt. I used to think this was one of the better Mexican beers, but there's not much to it.

For me this is the king of Mexican Beers. Pours a golden brown with a tan heads that thins out. Light carmelly aroma with fresh floral and earth hops. A mild carmel taste. Carbonation bubbles widely spaced throughout. Super with my red chile ground beef stuffed sopapilla.

On tap, into a strange looking negro modelo glass

A - dark brownish color, can't see through it, little head, little activity

S - Caramel and vanilla, a bit or corn

T - sweet biscuity malts, lightly floral hops, slightly watery and metallic

M - Could use a bit mroe carbonation. A little to thin as well

O - Not bad, but nothing I'd go running for

On tap at Torero's in Raleigh.

Arrived a deep, dark brown with a thin lacing of off white head. Caramel and chocolate malt notes in the nose. Taste is rich, malty, smooth; caramel, chocolate malt, slightly nutty with subtle hops for balance. Medium bodied, well carbonated, easily drinkable.

Not at all a bad offering. Definitely one of the better beers coming out of Mexico.

Negra Modelo pours a medium brown color w/ a fairly thin cocoa head. Almost zero carbonation or lacing on this brew. Smell is that of weak malt, caramel, and metal. Very watered down nose on this one. Taste is the same. It's not offensive, it's just not very good. Metallic aftertaste for sure. Decent beer when you're choosing between Corona and Dos Equis, but not in real world situations. Used to be my go to beer w/ Mexican food, but now I usually stick to something w/ a little more taste. Not recommended.

Bottle poured into a goblet.

A: A nice dark creamy looking color with a white head that disappeared pretty quickly. There is no evident lacing.

S: There is hardly any aroma at all. Maybe a faint sweet candy like smell that seems pretty typical of most American/Mexican lagers. Very bland and very boring.

T: A mixture of coffee, burnt and toasty grains, tar, burning rubber, and some malty sweetness all hop onto your palate at random times and seem to have no rhyme or reason. The aftertaste is slightly caramel-like and stale cigarette/cigar-ish.

M: The mouthfeel is very light and watery on the palate. Generic.

O: This isn't a very good beer, it isn't a bad one, but it sure as hell isn't a good one. I have never had a Mexican beer that I thought was awesome, but this one is most likely my favorite. Beers like this are just way too bland and generic (and expensive for what they offer) compared to the numerous amounts of quality American craft brews flooding the market.

Serving: Bottle, 12oz - gold foil lid. Brown bottle, nice looking label. Poured into pint glass

Appearance: Deep brown, light carb bubbling on the sides, foamy head which broke down nicely

Smell: Light, sweet, just a tad too much of the alcohol present

Taste: Sweet and resonant on the tongue, flavors of caramel. Not much malt for a dunkel style.

Mouthfeel: very light carbonation which was surprising from the amount of head generated by my light pour.

Overall - Rated it a 3.5, definitely will have again. Sweet, but it was balanced well inside the beer so that putting down a few wouldn't be too heavy.

Reviewing this to style cuts down on some of the ratings. This isn't a bad beer, and probably one of the best "macros" I've had. Still, to compare it with the style, it misses

nice dark amber, buckeye brown. Clean. Small head, soapy.

Aroma has the hints of MDL, but just hints. Toffee, sweet malt and some caramel. Kind of rusty.

Sweet tastes of caramel and toffee. Leather a bit to throw in some tannins. It's a bit chaotic. Nothing holding it together. While the flavors are not bad, they are random and light. The finish is a bit dirty.

Got worse at it warmed

12oz bottle poured into a Shaker pint glass. It had a production stamp but it wasn't obvious to me what the stamp meant in way of date.

Appearance: Clear dark coppery-orange beer with some brown color to it on the table with an off-white persistent 1/16" dense head. Little strands of persistent lacing noted.

Smell: Faint caramel malt, but with a swirl much sweeter. Really familiar but I can't place it what I'm smelling. Malty yes...but something else here too. Interesting whatever it is.

Taste: Caramel malt with a mild metallic finish. Really mild in flavor. Very mild bitter finish more notable when the beer was first poured and cold.

Mouthfeel: Carbonation goes away as it warms up. Mild carbonation and a bit watery, but not bad.

Overall / Drinkability: I've had this many times over the years, almost always with a Mexican or Southwest style meal and it has never failed to pair with it. I think I prefer it with food, but, it is very drinkable and could easily have another one right now. Not an amazing beer, and a bit weak in taste, but definitely one I know I'll have again and again when it's available.

Ordered draft pint at Salsa 17 with an excelent mexican meal - I had the Roasted Chicken with Mole Poblano...

Appearance - Came in a pint glass, color was cola and completely transparent, with a tan colored head - less than a finger of head with minimal lacing, but glasses likely washed in a dishwasher.

Smell - Slight molasses and toffee with dry bread, a little sweetness in the nose.

Taste - Crusty bread, slight malt sweetness, and some dry grassy (actually more like dry hay) hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Lite to medium mouthfeel, but pretty high carb. Was fairly smooth, but I feel that any sweetness in the nose may have been lost in the taste mostly by the crispness of the higher carb in this draft.

Overall - This was the "best beer" available at this restaurant, and the low sweetness and dryer characteristics of this pint made for a great pairing of the heavily flavored mole I enjoyed that evening. Not the greatest beer, but a Great pairing with my meal, and probly any full flavored mexican dish imho.

One of my favorite Mexican beers. The best for beer battered fish.

Color is light brown/dark copper, retention is minimal and body appears thin. Aroma isn't overwhelming, light malt and caramel with slight ethanol. Caramel dominates the flavor profile. Very slight dryness in finish. Not a lot of hop flavor anywhere. I've found that this beer is much better without a glass.

Poured from the bottle into a tumbler glass.

A simple foamy head off tan light caramel sits on a nice dark brown and red clear chestnut body.

Mild malt toffee bouquet, with a little grass and licorice. Fairly closed though.

Taste is, a basic light malt, simple almost wet texture, and lightly crisp with a small hint of toffee.

Overall this beer never fails me. Nothing fancy, just simple and pleasing.

Served clear brown with orange highlighting, the head is soapy and thin. Mexican dunkel lager should almost be it's own category because they simply don't look the part of a brawny German dark lager.

Faint, modestly toasted aromas. Toffee with nuts, ripe fruit, and a touch of blonde tobacco.

Nutty toffee flavor with a prominent herbaceous tone. Bruised mini banana in the middle and finishes clean. High carbonation, though toasted malt hangs tougher than expected.

Close to good, and not a bad session option but far from a go-to bar beer (except in MX...)

Poured into 10oz pilsner glass. Poured a clean, clear medium brown with about 1/4 inch of just off-white head that instantly dissipated leaving no lacing.

The aroma had a nice grain base and a bit of malt sweetness. The flavors started out nicely malty, a bit sweet and had a nice little hop tang on the finish.

The body was crisp and clean and ended up just shy of full, for the style. Drinkability was very good, the bottle went down easily and quickly. Overall, a nice little example of the style. Worth trying when you see it. This is probably my favorite of the mainstream Mexican brews, it's a decent beer.

Had this many times. Just getting around to reviewing. Poured from the bottle at Chipotle into a plastic cup. That's all I had. Skipped the lime, thank you. Poured a medium amber with a thin layer of bubbles. Classic lager taste with a nice balance. The food wrecked my palate but overall a clean simple taste great for washing down spicy food. Funny how BMC drinkers think this is so dark...

Smell is of roasted malts and toffee.

Taste is of roasted malts, molasses, toffee and the ending is slightly bitter from the malts. Decent flavor in this beer. Mouthfeel is light to medium with decent carbonation.

A pretty good beer, would be very enjoyable with a tamale or something slightly sweet.

12 oz bottle straight out of the bottle...have seen the color and head many times in a glass too though...probably the best Mexican mass-produced beer, but you can find better German examples of this style easily and in the same price range. Drink it if it's in a friend's fridge with a bunch of Coronas and Modelo Especials, but otherwise it's not really amazing and not a great value either. Drinkable.

It is really interesting getting a lager from Mexico and tasting German malts in the preparation. This is the first time I have had a Negra Modelo, and I thought, "Why not?"

Overall this beer is very thin. There isn't any body, and even less foam. The color is a very light brown.

The flavor is subtle... and that is the nice way of saying that you have to work hard to pick up the flavoring in this beer. It tastes good, but it is very watered down in the flavoring.

The smell is decent, but it gets bad after warming. I would suggest that you only smell it off the initial pour.

It is a decent beer, but I only recommend it for entry level lager drinkers.
