Good beer especially for price. I think it is a great one for anyone who wants to begin to explore darker beers but not quite ready to take the plunge. This is a good sampler and prep beer for flavor and color to prepare for darker beers to come. I will gladly buy this beer again and share it with my friends as well. Good job on this one!

Had this one at a local Mexican restaurant while caSSino was down from Charlotte visiting. Served from bottle into an Anarctic frozen mug. Poured amber with a one finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly (after the head thawed out of course). The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, cream, and wheat. The flavor was of sweet malt, cream, dark chocolate, wheat, and roasted malt. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was an average brew. Really nothing on this one stood out to me at all. I did like how this one had a bit of dark chocolate in it to add some character, but the wheat flavor I got here just didn't impress me at all. Got this as it was ranked as one of the best Mexican brews on the menu according to BA, but I guess I should have gone with a strawberry Margarita like caSSino chose to do...

Pour: Pours dark brown with a nice beige colored head
Smell: Not very strong with a faint malty smell
Taste: Smooth and creamy. Sweet malty flavor with a hint of caramel. Slight hop bitterness to even it out nicely
Overall a nice beer which I would recommend. Great with mexican food - just hold the lime as there is no need for it.

Grabbed a 12 FL. OZ. bottle of this from a friend's fridge on Washington Avenue in St. Louis, MO. Poured from the bottle w/ a golden label & a NEGRA MODELO banner like the Miss America Sign on the front into a 16oz Snifter Glass. Does not have a freshness date due to the brewery.

Aroma- Has a rich, malty aroma. Tons of toasted malt also and clean to the nose. Above average...

Appearance- Pours a 2 Finger, bubbly head that has decent retention. Has a dark copper/medium brown colored body that is clear. Leaves suds behind but not much.

Flavor- Has a good amount of toasted malt and vienna malt tastes from the beginning. Can be compared to a brown ale at times but much cleaner and easier to drink. A slight caramel flavor comes across at the finish. Light-Medium Bitterness. .

Mouthfeel- Medium Bodied, Medium Carbonation, Smooth, Crisp Finish, and has only clean malts that finish it up.

Overall Impression- Coming from this brewery, this is probably one of my favorites from them! If I'm ever @ a mexican/tex mex restaurant, this is my go to. Will be enjoying many more down the road.

Bottle poured into shaker pint glass

No expiration date

A:Two finger fast fading head, that completely disappears. No lacing. Beer is amber colored, and thin in appearance.

Smell: Malt, hops, apple cider, and bread

Taste: Apple Cider, biscuity, metal, This beer did not feel like something to really enjoy or celebrate.

M: Thin and watery

Overall: This is a beer that was endorsed by several friends. I disagree with their endorsement at this point. Truly, I don't think this beer is worth trying.

Been craving one of these bad boys for a while. Even on a cold day, this is really refreshing.

Drank one at a Mexican Restaurant to accompany my Fajitas, could not have made a better choice.

Bottle came with a slice of lime, which I quickly discarded. Didn't want to alter the flavor in any way.

Cold, smooth, no unexpected tastes. Refreshing

Pour a transparent amber color. Absolutely zero head even after a rough pour. I can actually hear the bubbles popping just like when I pour a soda. Looks like dark apple juice.

Smell is clean with some grainy notes.

Flavor of bread grains, leafy hops and a hint of apple sweetness.

Light to medium bodied. Descent carbonation. Crisp finish.

Ok brew. Worth a try but not something I would drink on a regular basis.

A - Slight dark brown in color, maybe some light ruby hues. Head is hefty with a half inch of slightly opaque head.

S - Lacking a bit but I mostly get sweet caramel and bread next to a regular corn lager smell.

T - Better than expected but not much, sweet toffee, bread, and a touch of lager yeast delivering both a skunk corn flavor and watered hops.

M - Thin to medium it drinks rather well.

Overall an average brew in terms of multiple purchases. If at a Mexican restaurant I would not pass it up.

Caramel brown, thin off-white head that goes fast.

Nutty, light burnt malts, some caramel.

Nutty with some caramel & sweet burnt malts. More nuts at end & a strange, hoppy bitterness.

Medium bodied and with a creamy sort of tang to it and good carbonation that leaves a linger fizzing sensation.

This one turned out to be a bit of a disappointment in my book. Not anywhere near as good as I'd been expected. By all means give it a try but I'll not be looking out for it again.

A 355ml bottle with a BB of Dec 2011. Picked up cheap from my local off-licence.

Poured into a Sam Smith's pint glass. A clear amber-brown colour with good carbonation. Forms a decent head of light-brown foam that dissipates rapidly. Aroma of sweet dark malt with hints of caramel, grain and alcohol.

Tastes of sweet caramel malt with a mild finish. Very faint hints of roasted malt and stewed hops. Mouthfeel is thin, though smooth and tingly. Slightly creamy. Weak malty aftertaste.

I like this beer - probably my favourite Mexican lager. Not world-class, but certainly a cut above Corona et al. The flavour is nothing to get excited about, but it's unchallenging and slides down nicely. Good to pair with Mexican food.

Although not much of a head on this one the smell that arose from the brisk pour told me that there was going to be some sweetness to this one.

The smell didn't lie sweet bready although smooth like a lager should be. Fairly thin body but it makes it all the more session able.
Great one to accompany food.

I'm a fan.

Poured into a standard pint glass. The beer is a nice dark amber color. The fizzy light cream colored head dissipates to a thin film. Some patchy lacing. The beer smells of subtly roasted malts, barely. I'm a fan of Mexican lagers, and this beer is no exception. It's got a nice caramelized malty taste in it, but with a bit of adjunct corn cheapness. The mouthfeel is smooth, very drinkable. Overall, one of the better beers from down south.

Tonight we are going south of the border. We are headed to Mexico for a Negra Modelo. I have had this beer time and time again, and I think it’s the gold wrapper that keeps me coming back. That, or its unique taste. It’s incredible, and I love a good dark beer that is drinkable like this Mexican brew. The beer is easy to find, and can be found in any grocery store. This beer is also very popular among the Mexican population.

The beer does have a nice presentation in the bottle. It’s got a gold and black label, and that foil over the cap is nice. It just looks nice, and makes me want to pop the top and pour this beer out. Bottoms up people!

In the Glass: In the glass, it’s dark, but doesn’t appear too thick. It’s got a nice amber color, almost black. It also has a small head, and fizzles in the glass like a flat cola. But that’s okay as I didn’t expect or want a thick beer. Mexico is hot… you can’t have a thick beer that far south.

Nose: The nose is smooth, and has an almost nutty note. I like that… nutty note. Anyway, it sticks around too and as I pull my nose from the glass I can still smell it. As I take a second whiff, it smells almost smokey, and somewhat dry. I don’t remember this beer being dry, but the nose begs to differ.

Flavor: This beer drinks extremely smooth, and goes down without any problems at all. For a beer this dark, you don’t expect it to be. There is subtle carbonation here, but not enough to cause concern. It doesn’t hang around that long, but we will get there with the aftertaste.

Mouthfeel: The mouthfeel is pretty boring. There is hardly any carbonation in this brew, and it sits there and just begs to be swallowed. That’s what she said! Sorry, I had to. Anyway, the beer is weak on the tongue and slides down smooth. But the flavor picks up toward the back of the palate.

Aftertaste: The aftertaste is pretty weak. It doesn’t stick around for very long, yet leaves a subtle dryness on the top of your throat. That dryness sits there until I take another sip. I will take another sip, as this is a good beer… a good summer beer.

I am giving it a 3 because it’s so common. It’s good though. I will give it that.

Poured into 12oz Tumbler Glass

Appearance - Dark Brown/Crimson with a very transparent appearance. Has a half finger head that quickly disappears. There's also no lacing left behind

Smell - Sweet Caramel with a slight hint of burnt malts and yeasts. Smell becomes slightly skunky later on

Taste - Caramel taste with surprisingly sweet notes. The malts are also fairly obvious here, along with a slightly grassy palette to top it off. It leaves a bittersweet aftertaste in your mouth as well

Mouthfeel - Overall body is moderate and it's fairly easy to drink, but there are smoother beers out there in terms of body. The carbonation is also fairly moderate so it's not too fizzy.

Overall - In short, it's an okay beer but one that makes me glad that I bought it as part of a custom six pack. I wouldn't go out of my way to try it again. It's a fairly average beer that's familiar to most of us, but at the same time there's really not alot going for it

supposedly one of the higher end mexican brews. pours a see through thin budlight color with a small head. nose is lousy, old malts, dead beer, no hops at all to speak of. taste beats the aroma, with a refreshing lighter malt flavor and a quick crisp finish. mouthfeel is alright, with some pretty high carbonation and a light body. if i was in mexico city on a 100degree day eating spicy food, it would be a good session, but on a cold fall night in the midwest with pizza, its extremely unremarkable.

355ml little stubby bottle poured into pint glass 5/11/11

A reddish amber with loads of tiny bubbles being pumped out from all over the glass, thumbs width of light tan film has a short life but leaves a couple rings of lace

S soapy molasses and a little cola

T a little nutty raisin and the soap I smell is gone, not that bad actually, I thought this would be complete swill but it's decent

M a little thin but enough carbonation to give it some life, flavors linger but faint

O a surprise considering I though it was another Corona in a brown bottle, unlike Corona I could drink this without problems

nothing worth looking for but it would make a great substitute for Mexican tap water, perhaps the best thing I've had from the country

Poured out of a bottle into a chilled mug.

Appearance is a medium brown with a fizzy head that doesn't stick around for long.

Smell is a light nutty roastiness and perhaps a little sweet.

Taste is a light nuttiness with a little bit of roast. Really no hops to speak of and the taste drops off fairly quickly. Mouthfeel is thin.

I do enjoy this beer with mexican food but that is about it. I seriously doubt I would ever drink it on a regular basis. However it is probably my favorite mexican lager.

A: Amber color. Almost no head which disappears almost immediately and leaves no lacing.

S: I caught there a light maltiness, but overall the smell is very poor.

T: Malts are predominating, light at first but finishes with a pleasant roasted yet sweet aftertaste. Alcohol is also present despite the relatively low ABV.

M: Good carbonation for this refreshing beer.

O: This is not a great brew. But it could have been worse for just a thirst-quenching beer.

Poured into a pint.

Excellent clarity, a bright reddened amber color. Through a terribly rough pour - rougher than I poured my Nitro Milk Stout (in which the bottle tells you to pour roughly, straight down) - I get barely any head, which recedes immediately. Miniscule flecks of lace dot the glass.

Smells skunky. There's certainly some caramel/amber malt thrown in there, but it's likely more for color than flavor.

Tastes skunked too, despite the brown bottle. Minor sweetness, stale bread crusts, apparent alcohol flavor.

Crisp, with high carbonation. Sticky with a lingering bitter/skunky aftertaste.

Overall this is one of the better Mexican lagers, but still nothing to write home about. This is unfortunately much better with a lime.

From my beer journal. Originally reviewed on July 19, 2011

A: Nice color. Very caramel throughout. Light cream colored head that quickly dissipated to nothing.

S: Got some malt with a very light roastiness

T: Very light roasted chocolate flavor. Mostly malts take over this beer but there is a hint of bitterness to finish. It actually ended very smoothly.

M: Pretty good mouthfeel. This beer is refreshing and has carbonation with a good bite to it.

O: Seen this around forever without putting much thought to it. And you know what? It really isn't terrible. I'd put this beer ahead of many.

Poured from bottles into 1/2 liter stien, given the season, nice garnet tawny hue with minamal head and off white lite lacing.

Sweet malty grain with a caramel and toast quality to the aroma.

Flavors seem of lightly toasted bread and graininess with a kiss of hop bitterness and spice.

Lightly carbonated and medium mouthfeel make this an easy drinker & the wife is grooving on this one currently.

Hey, it is what it is & I like it. Local grocer is running a deal too, $12 a 12pk.

Slight caramel flavor greets the tongue. Quite spritzy and makes a nice fizzy mouthful. Brownish amber in the glass. Decent head and the carbonation lasts pretty well. It tastes much like adjunct-type lagers though it does have a touch of bitterness. I wouldn't call it a hoppy taste, as there is no hint of floral flavors. Smell is not particularly pleasant, more like beer soaked into a beer mat. Aftertaste is kind of dirty and a little sour, like it has a touch of burnt malt. I used to think this was one of the better Mexican beers, but there's not much to it.

Negra Modelo pours a medium brown color w/ a fairly thin cocoa head. Almost zero carbonation or lacing on this brew. Smell is that of weak malt, caramel, and metal. Very watered down nose on this one. Taste is the same. It's not offensive, it's just not very good. Metallic aftertaste for sure. Decent beer when you're choosing between Corona and Dos Equis, but not in real world situations. Used to be my go to beer w/ Mexican food, but now I usually stick to something w/ a little more taste. Not recommended.
