Asked for an Ale in a Mexican Restaurant and received a bottle of Negra Modelo. Had tried Dos Equis and Corona - ugh, so was expecting another also-ran. Quite a surprise! Currently, I keep some on hand, since I drink in such moderation that a 6 pack lasts a month sometimes, but when I want an Ale, I always have one on hand.

Negra Modelo ... I got the Mystery Beer at Green Dot Stables in Detroit expecting to get a Snow Day by New Belgium, but I got this instead. I had never heard of it beforehand.

It's hard for me to say anything about the smell, considering it was in a bottle, and a lime wedge was shoved in the top. Aside from that lime, I got a faint malt aroma.

The taste of this one sort of surprised me ... this is my first beer from Mexico, and I wasn't expecting it to be very good. I thought it would taste like a macro or something. Instead, I got a respectable Mexican beer. There's really nothing about Negra Modelo that stands out, but it's inoffensive. This is worlds better than Corona (Apparently.. and unsurprisingly. As said, haven't had), and a very fair beer.

Serving type: 12oz custom brown short bottle with a gold foil at bottle neck

Appearance: Clear brown with a semi-creamy, light brown lace and tiny tight carbonation.
Smell: Clean smelling. Faint herbal aroma. Not much else.

Taste: Malty flavours lead the way. I get some faint coffee, and or molasses. Malts start out with some sweetness but then finish with some sharp dry bitterness .
Finishes rather clean with a touch of lemon hops.
Surprised that this beer from south of the border was this good.

I really like this beer considering it's price and that it is available almost anywhere. It has a nice brown coloring ,really malty smooth flavor with no bitter aftertaste. A little thicker consistency than average. My go to beer if no other darks on sale

A - Woody brown in color with a predominately white head and somewhat low retention.

S - Yeasty with a slightly spicy hop note and also a touch phenolic. That slight adhesive obscures the malt to some degree.

T - Very sweet, seemingly a good deal of complex sugar that went unfermented. A bitterness from the hops comes through in the aftertaste and lingers along with a slightly metallic coppery quality.

M - Low carbonation with a slight tingle on the tongue.

O - The hops take over from the sweet flavor noted on the front of the tongue. Not a bad beer, but not great.

Pours dark copper color with a tight inch and half of head. Looks nice. Smells malty but there is a hint of corn... which does not help. It would be great without that bit of corn. Watery taste at first, then malty (every so slightly roasted malt), finishes with a mild hop presence. Nothing too impressive. Light and crisp in the mouth. Low carbonation. Easy to drink. Overall for a dunkel lager it lacks the malt body, however for an easy drinking lager it is nice.

Awesome. It reminds me of somewhat of newcastle brown ale. This stuff is an instant favorite. A lot of dark beers have a bad after taste to me but this one does not at all. If you like dark beers this one is a must have. I also liked the shape of the bottle, shorter and wider than normal.

Had to come back and update this one then decided to review. I pored this from a bottle into a tall New Glarus glass. Looks beautiful in the light, decent head, and smells delicious. Tastes even better. A now must have for my fridge. For me this is an instant favorite! I can drink it warm, cold, bottled or in a glass. It's simple, easy to drink and really tasty. This ones for anyone, if you get a chance try it.

Poured this Dunkel Lager from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured a dark brown color, produced a tannish thick head, excellent retention and left ample lacing on the pint glass. The aroma features toasted grain, and a slight citrus hop note. Light in body, this lager features toasted grain, carmel candy sweetness and some slight hop bitterness at the finish. This is probably my favorite Mexican brewed beer thus far. Not outstanding but it's worth a try. Post!

I don't think I could drink this beer alone for too long. It has a light feel but hints of a roasty taste reminiscent to darker beers.

Now this is just personal taste, but after awhile the light feel of the beer wears on me and I end up really wishing this was a deep, rich beer. However if you drink this while eating a burger or something, it's refreshing as hell; it begs to be paired up with some food.

Much better than I expected and better than regular Modelo, this beer pours dark (duh ... given the name). It's a black-ish red with a tiny head and minimal latticework. The smell is virtually non-existent with the alcohol ringing through. The taste, happily, is better than the smell. It has the taste of a richer, more flavorful lager, and it is also more rich and textured. I liked this beer, but I probably won't buy it.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish mahogany with some hints of amber. Lots of rising bubbles and a solid three fingers of off white head. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: Sweet dark roasted malts with hints of chocolate, toast, caramel, and toffee. Lots of cereal grains and some big hints of biscuit and crackers. Also some hints of brown sugar and some light earthy, spicy hops. Pretty decent aroma.

Taste: The taste has the dark roasted elements, but starts to lean towards the grainy side. Some sweet roasted malts with notes of chocolate, toffee, and caramel. Lots of cereal grains, biscuit, crackers, and a little corn like flavor. Light taste of sugar. Hop presence is subtle but does add a little spice and bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy and crisp. Goes down pretty easy.

Overall: A decent take on the style, but could of had a stronger roast flavor. I would always take this over the other Mexican macros if at such a restaurant.

Bottle: fat little squat 355mL brown bottle, chincy gold label. Not inspiring.

Appearance: dark mahogany-brown in colour, a limited head with no retention or lacing.

Aroma: smells fairly cheaply - rice, corn, a hint of sweet malts.

Taste: moderate sweetness, but overpowered by a sour dough flavour. Not brilliant, to be honest.

Aftertaste: much the same, lingers only for a brief period.

Mouthfeel: light-to-medium body, medium carbonation. Just about right for a German dark lager.

Overall: not a brilliant version of a German dark ale. It is reasonably priced though, so I suppose it just depends if you prefer cheapness or good quality.

The appearance was a little flat,not much bubbly and the hickory odor made it come across "old",and not fresh. Unfortunately it didnt really surprise,the aged taste was hardy,but not refreshing. I will try another ,but would want with food,not by itself.

355ml bottle. (7503-1589 bar code) ½ Pint glass. Enjoyed on jul´12. Dark amber color. Chill hazy appearance. Beige, small bubbled, froth. Retention is ok but not much lacing. Sweet toasted malts, hints of brown sugar & toasted bread to the nose. Flavor profile shows toasted malts, subtle chocolate & bitterness in the middle. Grainy sensation & fizzy to the palate. Light body. Moderate to high carbonation. Dried nut astringency. Dry finish. Easy drinkability.

I was pleasantly surprised by this beer. I usually am pretty skeptical of mass produced beer like this but I thought this was exceptional and is now one of my favorite beers. It was smooth from start to finish no bitter finish or aftertaste. I has a beautiful dark caramel color that was very appealing. It was a very surprising and enjoyable experience.

Had in a bottle poured into a nonic pint glass with a Jegrbomb on the side at Cojones Cantina in beautiful downtown Olean:

A-deep, dark, decent head

S-roast and malt

T-pretty good, lots of backbone and character

M-well balanced and everything on point

O-a fine example of the style, a little bit too BMC, but ok

Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint glass

A: Ice tea orange with a white one finger head that went south of the border quickly, quickly.

S: A bit of malts, but not much else.

T: sweet, malty, smoky, smooth. A dry, semi-sweet chocolatey finish.

M: Light with medium carbonation.

O: A very smooth and easy drinker.

Chocolatey smell with a hint of something like bread pudding. A hint of light spice maybe.

Taste is a little flat with a distinct cola flavor. Rootbeer as well. Moderate sweetness and malty. Amanda who is with me said it had a merlot like winey-ness to it on the back end. Agreed.

Again, a little flat on the mouthfeel. I want something with a little more body here.

Overall, a solid beer with as many good characteristics as grievances.

Picked this up at a Shell Gas Station - had a gift card. Bump gas, I'm getting beer!

A - The appearance is a dark mahogany brown color. Dark for a lager - well, I guess this is a Dunkel (although I've read elsewhere that it is a Vienna Lager), so the darkness makes sense. The head is hanging around. Don't see many bubbles coming up so I'm not sure what to expect as far as carbonation. Looks pretty tasty.

S - If I was to close my eyes and take a sniff I would think I'm niffing a tasty biscuit. Along with the bicuity smell there's a slight funk going on there. Can't really put my finger on it. Maybe it's the earthiness of the smell.

T - It's doughy. It's sweet...like a sweet scone that hasn't baked all the way through and its gooey texture is ever-present in on the palate. This is a malty beer. The hops aren't too noticeable, although the finish has that tartness of a beer that used a small amount of hops in the boil. Wow, I'm getting an almost coconut flavor near the finish. Very refreshing. This is good, but a little weird.

O - I've had this beer before and I liked it, but I like it even more right now. This isn't my first rodeo with this beer and it won't be my last. On a scale from 0 to 100, I give it a solid 90.

Gracias Mexico para un otro cerveza sabroso. Not even sure the Spanish is correct, but the point is made. Thank you Mexico for another great tasting beer. (Another?)

pours an unsweetened tea color into a dark peach in the glass with root beer tint. 1/4" head that dissipates quickly with lacing that shares the same characteristic.

smells ricey with a little bit of wheat. not much going on. hints of corn.

nice, semi-stout on-bringing with a wet slow finish. tastes slightly bready with a bit of a pear-like bite.

simple mexican brew that's a nice alternative to its lighter little brother or the other array of lighter mexican brews. just sipping one is where it's at, not much to the "advocate" factors other than taste.

Had this right from the bottle at a recent mexican food dinner. Nice malty aromas, some spice character. Taste is a nice malty dark lager with some chocolatey roasted flavors and some slightly hidden dried fruit notes. It still maintains the macro lager drinkability...thin and easy. Overall, one of my favorite Mexican brews and macro style lagers widely available.

Hazy brown body with a thin head. Yeast, some caramel malts and very mild spiciness but mild for the style make up the aroma. Flavor is hard to break down but milk chocolate toffee and caramel are prevalent however not spicy enough for the style.. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Nicely smooth. Not terrible but it is what it is.

My only complaint on this beer is that I wish it had a bigger nose. It's a little subtle but still a wonderful scent. This beer has great malt character and a smooth, easily approachable lager mouthfeel. Not too carbonated and very thirst-quenching. The robust dark malts are not as pronounced as a schwarzbier from Germany. The hops on this beer are not as Euro-bitter as other Munich Dunkels out there. Sweet carmel amber malts and clean finish make this beer delicious. Mexico's best in the U.S.

Notes from my trip to Cancun a few months back.

Light fizzy head fades med pace, clear auburn molasses brown color.

Nose pretty much macro lager, cheap macro lager malts, a little bit of darker malts and crystal malts but not much, light skunk.

Taste light caramel, hit of mocha and cocoa, crystal malts, light lager, just a hint skunk and cheap lager, hint of earthy hops, light fruity lager, juicy creamy malt. Finish is dry and a bit crisp, bit more darker malts and lager fruits.

Mouth is med to a but lighter bodied, decent carb.

Overall not bad, better than most beers you can get in Mexico, although still cheap tasting and slightly skunked, with unhappy yeast lager flavors.
