Enjoyed this 12oz bottle out of a classic beer glass at Mi Casita in Crofton, MD.

A: Pours a clear brown hue with a thin ½-finger white head that quickly dissipates in to a wispy lace.

S: Slight nutty aroma with a general sweet backbone.

T: Similar to the aroma the flavor is sweet with a nutty taste with hints of vanilla and caramel.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: Decent lager – very smooth and easily drinkable.

On tap, into a strange looking negro modelo glass

A - dark brownish color, can't see through it, little head, little activity

S - Caramel and vanilla, a bit or corn

T - sweet biscuity malts, lightly floral hops, slightly watery and metallic

M - Could use a bit mroe carbonation. A little to thin as well

O - Not bad, but nothing I'd go running for

On tap at Torero's in Raleigh.

Arrived a deep, dark brown with a thin lacing of off white head. Caramel and chocolate malt notes in the nose. Taste is rich, malty, smooth; caramel, chocolate malt, slightly nutty with subtle hops for balance. Medium bodied, well carbonated, easily drinkable.

Not at all a bad offering. Definitely one of the better beers coming out of Mexico.

Ordered draft pint at Salsa 17 with an excelent mexican meal - I had the Roasted Chicken with Mole Poblano...

Appearance - Came in a pint glass, color was cola and completely transparent, with a tan colored head - less than a finger of head with minimal lacing, but glasses likely washed in a dishwasher.

Smell - Slight molasses and toffee with dry bread, a little sweetness in the nose.

Taste - Crusty bread, slight malt sweetness, and some dry grassy (actually more like dry hay) hops in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Lite to medium mouthfeel, but pretty high carb. Was fairly smooth, but I feel that any sweetness in the nose may have been lost in the taste mostly by the crispness of the higher carb in this draft.

Overall - This was the "best beer" available at this restaurant, and the low sweetness and dryer characteristics of this pint made for a great pairing of the heavily flavored mole I enjoyed that evening. Not the greatest beer, but a Great pairing with my meal, and probly any full flavored mexican dish imho.

Served clear brown with orange highlighting, the head is soapy and thin. Mexican dunkel lager should almost be it's own category because they simply don't look the part of a brawny German dark lager.

Faint, modestly toasted aromas. Toffee with nuts, ripe fruit, and a touch of blonde tobacco.

Nutty toffee flavor with a prominent herbaceous tone. Bruised mini banana in the middle and finishes clean. High carbonation, though toasted malt hangs tougher than expected.

Close to good, and not a bad session option but far from a go-to bar beer (except in MX...)

From 07/18/11 notes. On tap at Los Tios in Alexandria, VA last night with dinner. Served in a pint glass.

a - Pours a dark brown color with some amber notes, one inch of white head and moderate carbonation evident. No head rentention or lacing on the glass.

s - Smells of toasted malts, bready malts, light toffee and caramel, roasted malts, and light fruit.

t - Tastes of toasted malts, bread, roasted malts, light caramel malts, light fruit, and some hops.

m - Light to medium body and moderate carbonation. Pretty easy to drink.

o - Overall a pretty average beer, but this was my go to in Mexico and still is at Mexican restaurants. Lots of malts but easy to drink, and a good alternative to the Corona's and Sol's usually offered. Woudl certainly order it again at a restaurant, though don't like it enough to pick up a 6 pack at the store with better options available.

Another on the mini tour. First time I've had this one on tap; amber color with next to no head. No aroma that I could tell, taste was malt, a little sweetness, and no bitterness. I actually kinda like this one: I'd get it with a Mexican dinner if there were not other "worthy" choices.

A: Looks to be a sort of watery dark brown color. Absolutely no head whatsoever when it came to me.

S: So you know when you're outside and it's raining/been raining and your pants get wet because some douche speeds through a puddle right next to you even though he easily could have gone around it and you leave your pants out on the balcony to dry and then come back three days later to check on them and you give them a sniff and they still smell dank and like puddle? Yeah, that's what this smells like.

T: Better than the smell, but I don't know how much that's saying. Grain, a little syrupy sweetness, honey and more grain with a creamy mouthfeel. If you gave me this next to Bud Light in a blind taste test, I would have a hard time telling them apart.

This beer isn't terrible if you find yourself in a pinch.

The beer pours thinly into my trusty Sam Adams glass

The smell is a little sour with no hint of chocolate or hops

the taste follows suit, being thin, a little sour and lite

The mouthfeel is ok, not horrible

If it's this or krap go with this!

Served on-tap at the airport Margaritaville in Cancun, Mexico. The beer was served in a mug. It presented a semi-hazed amber-brown color with no head. Caramel-malty nose. There was a very steady flow of carbonation present. The beer is slight dark caramel and molasses flavors riding a light, crisp body. There is a slightly dark and sweet aftertaste, with some sour notes and a hint of hops to balance. The finish is very quick and clean. Goes great with nachos, that's for damn sure.

On-tap at Flying Saucer served in a gold rimmed Negra Modelo pint glass a crisp dark brown with a thin khaki head. Aroma is slight dark malts and a hint of nuts. The taste is a small amount of dark malts, but not much else there. The beer is light and crisp with decent carbonation. This is a somewhat respectable Mexican beer, but one I'm glad I didn't have to pay for.

Draft pint at Front Street Cantina in Plainfield, IL.

Poured a dark copper with a light tan head. The head didn't last long, but the bartendar also put a lime in it, which was promptly removed.

Aromas of lightly roasted malts, and caramel. No discernable hop aroma. Not as malty as european versions.

First sip is refreshing, dark malts, a light bitterness, some caramel and crisp carbonation, no carbonic bite. Doesn't have the malt profile of the european versions of the style.

Mouthfeel is light, not quite watery, crisp, with good carbonation

Overall a very drinkable beer. Nothing offensive or extreme. Goes great with spicy mexican food. Better on tap than from the bottle.

Pours a reddish mahogany color, clear with minimal head. Scent is pale, light caramel malt and some notes of roasted nuts and earthy hops. Taste comes of of nowhere to be a smooth and quite flavorful blend of light caramel, roasted nuts and touches of earthy hops. Medium bodied, smooth, light carbonation. Surprisingly good beer,

Had this on tap at Fuzzy's tacos...
Poured into a goblet, had a dark brown color with not much of a head.
Smells of roasted grain and it's a bit metallic.
Tastes roasty with lots of sweet malt, and a bit more metal flavor.
This beer is light bubbly and crisp.
It drinks very smooth, very nice beer.

Consumed earlier tonight at the Independence Tap.

A-Pours a deep ruddy amber color with a one finger head.

S-Caramelly and dark fruit munich malt notes. A pretty faint nose, but not bad one.

T-Dry and biscuity with some mild bitter herbal hop notes on the finish.

M-Light to medium bodied with medium to heavy amount of carbonation.

D-Not a bad beer per se, but not one I'm likely to revisit anytime soon unless I'm at a Mexican restaurant.

Had this beer yesterday out of the bottle and got a chance to try it on tap at a local mexican restruant. I dont know if they got a bad keg or something, but the differance between on-tap and out of the bottle is huge. God awful beer, smelled like burnt rubber, had a huge lack of carbonation...completly flat. No head to speak of, and the beer even tasted slightly warm. Ill be checking back to see if anyone else had the same expierance.

Good beer out of the bottle though.

On draft at the Buoy Bar, Point Lookout, New York.

Poured a deep brown hue with a half finger whispy white head. There was decent retention and lacing.

The smell featured some roasted malts, caramel and a bit of adjunct sweetness.

The taste was upfront grainy and moderately sweet. No doubt there is some amount of corn in the grist. Bready toward the finish.

The mouthfeel was relatively full.

Overall a good and decent brew. Likely the best effort from this brewer.

Very nice looking beer a nice deep brown color with very little head no lacing.

Smell is a very light piney hop and toffee like malt scent.

Taste is more or less the same with a greater malt presence thou it is still fairly watery.

Mouthfeel is thin yet clean. Light bodied with creamy, soft carbonation.

Very drinkable.

A good cheap beer. Nothing to write hwowme about but I enjoy it with some Tex-mex cuisine.

A 500 mL glass at a pizzeria in Puerto Vallarta.

A: The lagerbier is an amber color that floats ephemerally between a copper penny and chocolate brown. The lager is rendered opaque as a result of the hues. A small head, surprisingly nonexistent, didn't do much through the glass.

S: The nose lacks some of the chocolate strength that the bottled version has. What remains is a mild grainy aroma that has a noticeable, but not overpowering, roasted aroma.

T: Roasted grains, chocolate and burnt toast define the flavor. The malty base is firm, mildly carbonated, with a strong bready finish. Par for the course, hops really don't add much of a zing, allowing the dark malts to carry the day. By far the most diverse Mexican lager around.

M: The lower carbonation in the draught version allows the roasted flavors to come through with a little more oomph.

D: Very drinkable, possibly my favorite of the trip.

Negra Modelo

had on tap at pappa's cantina in austin tx. they had a cheap selection and this was the only semi-flavorful beer besides shiner bock.

it's a deep amber/brown color with a thick foamy head that sticks around for a long time and leaves some lace. the nose is simple. corn, somewhat buttery. a little malty. taste is unassuming. tastes like a typical adjunct lager with some buttery caramel malts. well carbonated, easy on the palate. sippable for sure.

not bad for a bar beer when there's not much else available, but i wouln't run out to buy a 6. probably one of the better cerveza.

Out of the tap, this beer had a wodernful tan, thick head of two fingers and a clear amber color. Likewise, the lacing made the beer look inviting. Now things turned for the worse. The head and lace dissipated into nothing after a few minutes.

This sample had a powerful metallic smell. Behind the off smell was a slight aroma of malt and hops.

As with the aroma, the beer had a strong metallic taste. After fighting my way past the off flavor I discovered the sweet flavor of malt and medium hop aftertase. I also think the flavor is thin.

Due to the above, the mouthfeel and drinkability were lacking.

I tried this beer at a Mexican restaurant and I wish I had a marguerita. Perhaps the keg was old or the tap lines are dirty as other BA appear to like this beer.

A: Pours a clear dark reddish brown color. A two finger white head forms, but recedes in an instant. Not much lace to speak of.
S: Pale malts. Cooked corn. Grain, cereal, and metal. There is almost nothing in the nose.
T: Follows the nose. Grain, cereal, and metal. Some adjunct corn flavor. I really can't make much out.
M/D: Light as can be and way over carbonated. Very seltzer like. Easy enough to drink if it were not for the heavy prickly carbonation.

I had this at a good Mexican place. Usually I enjoy beers like this with Tex-Mex. Though this pretty much had no body for a "dark beer." Hardly any flavor or aromatic character either. I will avoid this from now on and drink Bohemia instead.

Received a clear brown glass with minimal head and lacing.

Smells lightly of caramel and malt.

some caramel and light hop bite. Clean but subdued flavors dominate this dark lager. Some brown breadiness as well.

A very drinkable brew with decent south of the border fare. Not the mouth coating or filling beverage, but slight sweetness cuts thru the heat very well. My choice for mexican beer.

Certainly a little different than the other Mexican beers I've had. Poured a deep amber color, a small white head and hardly any lacing at all. Richer flavors than many other Mexican beers: malty, caramel flavors, some grain. The finish is rather bland. I wouldn't put a lime in this one (was served with one). Not a bad beer, went pretty well with the Mexican dish I had.

Served on tap at the Riu Palace in Playacar. At many of the bars in the resort, it was served too cold, but that's okay considering the hot weather. Looked great, be it in a normal glass or a (gasp) hard plastic 10oz glass at the swim-up bar. Hard to tell the smell really, I think they don't quite know what beer-clean means. Taste was okay if it wasn't freezing, and it was very drinkable, many after the other.. Glad the resort was all inclusive, or I might have spent a fortune!
