bottle to a goblet

A: Dark brown and beautiful red in more intense light. bubbly head dissipates quickly to a thin splotchy film on the surface and around the edge of the glass.

S: smells like it looks. dark and heavy smell of roastiness and chocolate

T: sweet chocolate from first sip through to the finish. roasty and warming

M: strange combination. almost watery but there's a chewiness and lasting, resinous mouthfeel as well.

O: I've had this beer many times at Mexican restaurants. and really, it's perfect with that food, the chocolatey sweetness perfectly complements the spices. standing alone I feel it lacks complexity and body. but it is definitely drinkable and a good beer.

Hit up my favorite Mexican restaurant in Madrid (La Mordita, in between Sol and Opera) last night and decided to switch from the usual margarita to a Negra Modelo. Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass, Negra Modelo was a nice dark amber, almost like what you would expect a Newcastle to look like when poured. It had about a finger of white bubbly head on top with plenty of bubbles streaming up through the glass. Though the actual head died pretty quickly, there was a decent amount of lacing on the glass and the omnipresent bubbles kinda kept the head going as I drank it. The smell was slightly hopped, kinda grassy, and had a hint of skunkiness that actually blended together pretty nicely despite the skunk. The taste was largely the same for me. I couldn't really detect any sort of malt, but I did get a decent hop taste to it; it was again grassy and somewhat earthy. The feel was alright too. Maybe a bit too overcarbonated, but the beer was smooth and crisp nonetheless. This was an ok beer overall. I had no expectations going in because I had never really read up on Negra Modelo so I was pleasantly surprised. Cheers!

Cinco de Mayo tour thanks to the COOP. Pours with a decent off white head... the brew is clear darker amber.

Clean toasty maltiness... a bit bready.

Very drinkable... No real flaws.

I should buy this more than once per year.

3.5's across the board.

Used to drink this a lot while living in Mexico, as a regular session beer. Corona and alike really can be just drunk as michelada.
Brown rubi color with a 3 finger head with medium retention.
Aroma of toasted malts and earthy notes.
Flavor of slightly toasted malts, mild condiments and earthy hops. Dry and bitter aftertaste.
Medium body with good carbonation.
Decent beer, flavorful with good drinkability. Nevertheless, all depends on purpose and to what you compare this to.

Appearance: It has a nice clear deep copper/amber color to it. It has a thin white head that dies down fast and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of sweet roasty/toasty malts, caramel and a slight nuttiness.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some roasty malts with some sweet caramel and some nuttiness. Not a whole lot going on here.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a light overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with decent flavors and aromas.

I bought a 12 pack when I couldn't find any other dark beers at a local super market. I've had Negra Modelo before and thought it was OK. Not great, but better than the many no taste beers out there. Worth buying in a pinch (or when in a supermarket...).

As I was drinking one of the beers, I felt something go into my mouth that shouldn't be there, I immediately spit the beer back into the bottle and pored it out on my plate. I felt that I had swallowed some of whatever it was and wanted to see if I got any of it back in the bottle.

It was fly larvae. Almost fully formed. I put the larvae in a baggie and kept the bottle. the next morning the baggie was buzzing with a newly hatched fly. Disgusting.

I will never, ever drink this filthy beer again and can only imaging how filthy the bottling plant must be to allow live fly larvae in a bottle. I was then, and still am, grossed out every time I take a drink from a bottle.

If I could give this disgusting beer a negative rating, I would.

Poured into a Seattle Beer Week pint glass. Pours a russet amber with a thin off-white head that dissipates quickly to a thin film and ring around the glass leaving light lacing. Aroma of sweet malt, spicy graininess. Flavor starts well, with sweet mild toasted malt, slight breadiness, hint of caramel, but ends rather abruptly with slight caramel malt and a hint of grassy hops. Light bodied. A step above other macros, but nothing exciting. Would do in a pinch if only macro beer was available.

Ah...here's one I have not had in a while. I think this is one of the better choices at a lot of Tex-Mex restaurants around town if you don't see any craft beer selections around.

Nice color...a little lighter than an iced tea...decent mix of brown, red and caramel. Cream colored head that disappates rather quickly...very little lacing to speak of.

Getting some sweet malt with just a hint of light roastiness. Smells clean.

Just a slight light roasted chocolate flavor. Malts take over this beer but there is a very small hint of bitterness to finish. This beer is refreshing and has a medium carbonation. Certainly not offensive to folks looking to try something different than the typical Corona type lager at a restaurant. A smidge more booze in this one makes it more fun to drink.

I'd certainly order this one with a fajita platter anytime!

I didn't know what to expect with this beer and frankly kept my expectations low - boy was I surprised.

The brew pours out a very nice dark-caramel color, not black like the name of the beer would lead you to believe. The head was thin, but strangely, the lacing was noticeable all the way down the bottle - I've never seen anything like it. The smell was the normal hops and barley, but the odor was just slight - just the right amount in my opinion. Mouthfeel was surprising, the dark liquid was thick and felt velvety. The taste is what I walked away with impressed - full and rich - certainly not what I was expecting, but glad I did. Overall, a solid beer (in too small a bottle) I will be glad to partake of again.

Poured from bottle into pint glass

Appearance – The beer poured a medium brown color with hints of ruby. Upon pouring a smaller tan colored head is formed on the brew which faded relatively fast to leave only a light level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma was a mix of caramel and wheat. Mixed with these aromas was a light nutty and herbal smell as well.

Taste – The taste begins with a sweeter caramel malt with hints of roasted malt mixed within. Flavors of wheat bread mingle with these and as the taste advances more toward the middle flavors of a nutty flavor come to the tongue. The flavors to this point are all relatively light and at the end are joined by a lighter herbal hop taste, overall leaving a somewhat roasted yet oddly thin flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer was on the thinner side with a carbonation level that was very average. A thicker creamier body would have likely suited the nutty and roasted flavors, helping to enhance them more.

Overall –Not really a brew I would recommend. It isn’t off in any way, but isn’t on in any way either.

12 oz. bottle poured into a snifter.

Pours out a clear deep reddish brown color with a decent off white to light tan colored head that eventually fades to a ring. Some decent lacing.

Not much to the aroma. Mineral like lager yeast and a bit of sweet toasted malt.

The taste reflects the aroma. Mineral heavy water from the lager yeast and some sweet toasted malt. Finishes very light. Light bodied with ample carbonation.

Not much to get excited about, but fairly true to style.

Best by: dunno

Pours dark ruby brown with some weak etched light cream foam. Smells like cheap beer - wheat and grain, some soily yeast and a little bit of sweet malt. Tastes like a brown ale that wherein the yeast was over-taxed and has a real bad ester profile with sweet vanilla and butter flavors. Some nutty character. LIght bodied with hi carb and a semi dry finish. Not something I plan to revisit.

Asked for an Ale in a Mexican Restaurant and received a bottle of Negra Modelo. Had tried Dos Equis and Corona - ugh, so was expecting another also-ran. Quite a surprise! Currently, I keep some on hand, since I drink in such moderation that a 6 pack lasts a month sometimes, but when I want an Ale, I always have one on hand.

Negra Modelo ... I got the Mystery Beer at Green Dot Stables in Detroit expecting to get a Snow Day by New Belgium, but I got this instead. I had never heard of it beforehand.

It's hard for me to say anything about the smell, considering it was in a bottle, and a lime wedge was shoved in the top. Aside from that lime, I got a faint malt aroma.

The taste of this one sort of surprised me ... this is my first beer from Mexico, and I wasn't expecting it to be very good. I thought it would taste like a macro or something. Instead, I got a respectable Mexican beer. There's really nothing about Negra Modelo that stands out, but it's inoffensive. This is worlds better than Corona (Apparently.. and unsurprisingly. As said, haven't had), and a very fair beer.

Serving type: 12oz custom brown short bottle with a gold foil at bottle neck

Appearance: Clear brown with a semi-creamy, light brown lace and tiny tight carbonation.
Smell: Clean smelling. Faint herbal aroma. Not much else.

Taste: Malty flavours lead the way. I get some faint coffee, and or molasses. Malts start out with some sweetness but then finish with some sharp dry bitterness .
Finishes rather clean with a touch of lemon hops.
Surprised that this beer from south of the border was this good.

A - Woody brown in color with a predominately white head and somewhat low retention.

S - Yeasty with a slightly spicy hop note and also a touch phenolic. That slight adhesive obscures the malt to some degree.

T - Very sweet, seemingly a good deal of complex sugar that went unfermented. A bitterness from the hops comes through in the aftertaste and lingers along with a slightly metallic coppery quality.

M - Low carbonation with a slight tingle on the tongue.

O - The hops take over from the sweet flavor noted on the front of the tongue. Not a bad beer, but not great.

Pours dark copper color with a tight inch and half of head. Looks nice. Smells malty but there is a hint of corn... which does not help. It would be great without that bit of corn. Watery taste at first, then malty (every so slightly roasted malt), finishes with a mild hop presence. Nothing too impressive. Light and crisp in the mouth. Low carbonation. Easy to drink. Overall for a dunkel lager it lacks the malt body, however for an easy drinking lager it is nice.

Awesome. It reminds me of somewhat of newcastle brown ale. This stuff is an instant favorite. A lot of dark beers have a bad after taste to me but this one does not at all. If you like dark beers this one is a must have. I also liked the shape of the bottle, shorter and wider than normal.

Had to come back and update this one then decided to review. I pored this from a bottle into a tall New Glarus glass. Looks beautiful in the light, decent head, and smells delicious. Tastes even better. A now must have for my fridge. For me this is an instant favorite! I can drink it warm, cold, bottled or in a glass. It's simple, easy to drink and really tasty. This ones for anyone, if you get a chance try it.

Poured this Dunkel Lager from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass. Poured a dark brown color, produced a tannish thick head, excellent retention and left ample lacing on the pint glass. The aroma features toasted grain, and a slight citrus hop note. Light in body, this lager features toasted grain, carmel candy sweetness and some slight hop bitterness at the finish. This is probably my favorite Mexican brewed beer thus far. Not outstanding but it's worth a try. Post!

I don't think I could drink this beer alone for too long. It has a light feel but hints of a roasty taste reminiscent to darker beers.

Now this is just personal taste, but after awhile the light feel of the beer wears on me and I end up really wishing this was a deep, rich beer. However if you drink this while eating a burger or something, it's refreshing as hell; it begs to be paired up with some food.

Much better than I expected and better than regular Modelo, this beer pours dark (duh ... given the name). It's a black-ish red with a tiny head and minimal latticework. The smell is virtually non-existent with the alcohol ringing through. The taste, happily, is better than the smell. It has the taste of a richer, more flavorful lager, and it is also more rich and textured. I liked this beer, but I probably won't buy it.

Poured from 12 oz. bottle into a Sam Adams "Perfect Pint" glass.

Appearance: Pours a dark brownish mahogany with some hints of amber. Lots of rising bubbles and a solid three fingers of off white head. Leaves a decent amount of lacing.

Smell: Sweet dark roasted malts with hints of chocolate, toast, caramel, and toffee. Lots of cereal grains and some big hints of biscuit and crackers. Also some hints of brown sugar and some light earthy, spicy hops. Pretty decent aroma.

Taste: The taste has the dark roasted elements, but starts to lean towards the grainy side. Some sweet roasted malts with notes of chocolate, toffee, and caramel. Lots of cereal grains, biscuit, crackers, and a little corn like flavor. Light taste of sugar. Hop presence is subtle but does add a little spice and bitterness.

Mouthfeel: Light to medium body with a moderate level of carbonation. Creamy and crisp. Goes down pretty easy.

Overall: A decent take on the style, but could of had a stronger roast flavor. I would always take this over the other Mexican macros if at such a restaurant.

Bottle: fat little squat 355mL brown bottle, chincy gold label. Not inspiring.

Appearance: dark mahogany-brown in colour, a limited head with no retention or lacing.

Aroma: smells fairly cheaply - rice, corn, a hint of sweet malts.

Taste: moderate sweetness, but overpowered by a sour dough flavour. Not brilliant, to be honest.

Aftertaste: much the same, lingers only for a brief period.

Mouthfeel: light-to-medium body, medium carbonation. Just about right for a German dark lager.

Overall: not a brilliant version of a German dark ale. It is reasonably priced though, so I suppose it just depends if you prefer cheapness or good quality.
