Tasted like a dark Budwiser. Drinkable, but not worth trying. What is worth trying is the populr Mexican cocktail that it can make. It's called a "La Michelada," and contains worcestershire sauce, tabasco, salt, pepper, and lime. I had one of these first with Tecate, and then with Negra Modelo, and did a taste test comparison. I would say it's much better with the latter, and again, definitely worth a try.

Negra Modelo, after a hard pour, yields a fast-collapsing beige head
over an attractive coffee colored brew. Carbonation is high, and the
nose is barley malt and lager yeast. The flavor is a slightly toasty malt
with a note of something I can't pin down- chicory maybe, with a bit of
an herbal hop finish. There's a bit of grain in the aftertaste and a bit of
grass. This is one of the better Mexican lagers I've had, but unfortunately
that's really not saying much. It's pretty one-dimensional, and there's
something that's just wrong about it.

Poured into a pilsner glass at Abuelo's Mexican Restaurant.

A - Dark chocolate in color with little head/lacing.

S - Some malty aromas but overall faint smell

T - Much lighter and crisp than expected. Maltier as well.

M - Watery Mexican beer.

D - Of the choices available there, it worked out pretty good, but I won't be adding it to the fridge anytime soon...

Found one of these in the fridge, left over from a party. Pours a nice deep amber color, hardly any head to speak of despite a vigorous pour. There is an odd odor here, rotten fruit? Do I have a skunky bottle? Tastes malty and of metal. Metal flavor seems to have control. Head is already gone after two sips. Bottle says it's a dark beer, it looks like a dark beer, but doesn't have the complexity of a good dark lager beer.

Ordered a bottle along with dinner at a Mexican restaurant on Comm Ave last Saturday night. Poured into a tall pilsner glass. Doesn't look like most Mexican beers, as it's a dark tan color. Vienna lager is an interesting take for a Latin brewery. No head at all, and lots of carbonation. A bit malty on the tongue, it tastes just like most easy drinking lagers. While this beer is nothing special, at least instead of filling up on fizzy yellow beers and enchilladas, you can fill up with fizzy brown beers. Something different to drink at a Mexican joint, so it's not all that bad.

Pours a clean, bubbly, light brown/amber color with a thin watery head.

Smells grassy, a bit like caramel, brown sugar and sour malt.

Tastes sweet, a lot of caramel notes, light in body with some decent malty notes. Not a whole lot of flavor which does lead to a high drinkability factor when its hot out and you're on a Mexican beach.

Better than Corona or Sol, this was my go to beer in Mexico.

pours a light amber brown with a 1 finger head that leaves no lacing

smell of carmel malts and grassy hops

tastes of sweet carmel malts and grassy hops - might be a tad thin - reminds me a lot of Boston Lager

mouthfeel is nice and light little watery - nice carbonation and smooth

drinkability is good a nice full flavored light lager

update: later that night a got a killer headache and the only time beer does to me is when i drink the cheap stuff so drinkability goes from 4 to 1 - never again

Reviewed from notes.

ABV 5.3%, bottle of 355 ml.

Pours an amber colour, a tone or two darker than an iced tea.Head disappeared straight away.Light caramel smell.
Taste follows the smell, tastes of bitter chocolate, nothing too special though.
Quite thick on the body and medium carbonation.
It has to go a long way to reach Bohemia Obscura.

Not a bad Mexican beer, head and shoulders above Corona or Corona light. Decent beer that does not require the addition of a lemon or lime. In addition, this beer is not bad as it warms a bit. Carbonation is good, but not overdone. To be honest, could not really detect an attributable scent with this beer. Would I go out of my way to buy this beer? No, but I would order the next time I am having Mexican food.

Clean, very slightly fruity aroma. General lack of aroma appropriate for the style. Brilliant clarity in a pale (tea colored) brown beer, with a small but tight off-white head. Maltiness up front subdued, and immediately balanced by the hop bitterness. My sample may have been a bit oxidized, as had some cardboard notes. Very high carbonation in a fairly light bodied beer. A middle of the road, easy drinking beer. Nicely balanced, with a fairly clean finish, but would like more malt character and complexity.

Pours a dark copper color with a small light brown head.

Aroma of sweet malts and light hops in the background.

Taste is sweet malts and caramel. Some light spiceyness in there.

Mouthfeel is light bodied and lightly cleansing.

Overall, a drinkable brew but nothing too exciting. I haven't had this for a long time and was expecting more.

One of the few dark lagers I enjoy. Pours clear brown with a medium off-white head. Caramel and nut aroma, very sweet. Taste is bready and grainy, somewhat toasty, but not like you would find in a stout or porter. Barely-there hops. Happens to be one of the few Mexican beers I consume indoors and with my shirt on.

I poured this beer into my tumbler at 50 degrees. The beer was coca-cola colored. The beeer poured a nice head but it did not last long at all. It left decent lacing, but really, who cares about that? The beer smelled sour to me. Taste was a little sweet and a little flat tasting. No good to me I will not buy agaiun as I have tried this beer repeadedly and always get the same bad beer.

Negra Modelo

had on tap at pappa's cantina in austin tx. they had a cheap selection and this was the only semi-flavorful beer besides shiner bock.

it's a deep amber/brown color with a thick foamy head that sticks around for a long time and leaves some lace. the nose is simple. corn, somewhat buttery. a little malty. taste is unassuming. tastes like a typical adjunct lager with some buttery caramel malts. well carbonated, easy on the palate. sippable for sure.

not bad for a bar beer when there's not much else available, but i wouln't run out to buy a 6. probably one of the better cerveza.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a frosted mug.

The beer pours a slightly hazy amber brown, with a red hue. About an inch of bubbly head rose about an inch, and dissipated quickly.

Smells of caramel, very mild hops, slightly metallic, and sweet malts.

Taste is mostly just clean, crisp, and cold. I let it warm a bit due to the frosted mug, even though I knew there would still not be much there. Some caramel, sweet malts, and light bitterness.

Mouth feel is light, with medium carbonated. Fairly watery.

Overall, an easy drinker, but not something to seek out. However, the fact this beer is served in a brown bottle, with gold foil at the top shows that they at least care to protect this beer from light & skunk, unlike say Corona or Sol for example. It is not a great beer by any means, but it is palatable. Probably your best choice to pair with spicy Mexican food while at a Mexican restaurant, which is how and why I had it.

Always my beer of choice when at a Mexican restaurant and faced with the usual uninspired line-up.

A: Poured straight into a tulip - maybe two finger soapy, bubbly head that did not stick around. Small traces of lacing. Body shows lots of carbonation and has a ruby brown color, like root beer.

S: Very light toasted malt, raw corn with a little nuttiness to it.

T: Very little in the way of flavor. Slight, barely toasted malt, grains with a hint of bitterness. In all honesty, it tastes much like most macro lagers - with just a bit more flavor.

M: Decent for the style i suppose. Good carbonation, crisp and fairly light.

Negra will still be my go to at the taqueria, but after reviewing and really trying to taste the beer my affinity for it has waned. It's ok, but not as good as I used to say it was.

A - This beer is a drab brown tint, like tannic streamwater. Visibly thin, with a soda wisp of bubbles.

S - Vaguely sweet malt is about all I get here, perhaps a suggestion of honey. Inoffensive.

T - The taste is watery and mineral-y and has a slight honey sweetness.

M - Feel is thin and watery, but works well for a Mexican Lager.

O - I would not be terribly interested in drinking more than one of these, but it is ok with Mexican food.

It is best used as a base for a Michelada, which I do quite often. To keep this review as useful as possible, here is a recipe for the Sangrita which comprises the non-beer half of Michelada:

1/4 cup lime juice
1 cup orange juice
2 cups tomato juice, Clamato or V8
1 tablespoon of minced onion
1 tablespoon of very finely chopped cilantro
1 tablespoon of minced jalapeno
Stir all ingredients, chill for at least 20-30 minutes to let the flavors marry, then serve. Keeps overnight, may be better that way.

Poured into 12oz Tumbler Glass

Appearance - Dark Brown/Crimson with a very transparent appearance. Has a half finger head that quickly disappears. There's also no lacing left behind

Smell - Sweet Caramel with a slight hint of burnt malts and yeasts. Smell becomes slightly skunky later on

Taste - Caramel taste with surprisingly sweet notes. The malts are also fairly obvious here, along with a slightly grassy palette to top it off. It leaves a bittersweet aftertaste in your mouth as well

Mouthfeel - Overall body is moderate and it's fairly easy to drink, but there are smoother beers out there in terms of body. The carbonation is also fairly moderate so it's not too fizzy.

Overall - In short, it's an okay beer but one that makes me glad that I bought it as part of a custom six pack. I wouldn't go out of my way to try it again. It's a fairly average beer that's familiar to most of us, but at the same time there's really not alot going for it

Had this one at a local Mexican restaurant while caSSino was down from Charlotte visiting. Served from bottle into an Anarctic frozen mug. Poured amber with a one finger tan head that subsided to a minimal amount slowly (after the head thawed out of course). The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, roasted malt, cream, and wheat. The flavor was of sweet malt, cream, dark chocolate, wheat, and roasted malt. It had a light feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was an average brew. Really nothing on this one stood out to me at all. I did like how this one had a bit of dark chocolate in it to add some character, but the wheat flavor I got here just didn't impress me at all. Got this as it was ranked as one of the best Mexican brews on the menu according to BA, but I guess I should have gone with a strawberry Margarita like caSSino chose to do...

Hit up my favorite Mexican restaurant in Madrid (La Mordita, in between Sol and Opera) last night and decided to switch from the usual margarita to a Negra Modelo. Poured from a bottle into a tulip glass, Negra Modelo was a nice dark amber, almost like what you would expect a Newcastle to look like when poured. It had about a finger of white bubbly head on top with plenty of bubbles streaming up through the glass. Though the actual head died pretty quickly, there was a decent amount of lacing on the glass and the omnipresent bubbles kinda kept the head going as I drank it. The smell was slightly hopped, kinda grassy, and had a hint of skunkiness that actually blended together pretty nicely despite the skunk. The taste was largely the same for me. I couldn't really detect any sort of malt, but I did get a decent hop taste to it; it was again grassy and somewhat earthy. The feel was alright too. Maybe a bit too overcarbonated, but the beer was smooth and crisp nonetheless. This was an ok beer overall. I had no expectations going in because I had never really read up on Negra Modelo so I was pleasantly surprised. Cheers!

On tap at BTB in Ann Arbor, MI. Modest brown color, through and through. Moderate transparency with a small, wispy head that vanishes pretty abruptly. This beer has a clean, crisp, faint citrus smell with a very small malty undertone. It tastes like roasted malts and toasted bread with not much of a citrus taste like the smell might give off. There is, however, an element of sweetness to this beer, just a bit. The body is very thin, crisp, clean, and refreshing, providing a moderately dry finish.

Negra Modelo is a very simple beer that isn't great but isn't bad either. Many of the Mexican chain restaurants around my house serve this beer, and it compliments a burrito much better than a Corona or Dos Equis.

Appearance: It has a nice clear deep copper/amber color to it. It has a thin white head that dies down fast and leaves next to no lacing.

Smell: The aromas definitely give out hints of sweet roasty/toasty malts, caramel and a slight nuttiness.

Taste: Like the aromas, it has some roasty malts with some sweet caramel and some nuttiness. Not a whole lot going on here.

Mouthfeel: It has a med/high carbonation with a light overall balance and feel.

Drinkability: It's a very smooth drinkable beer accompanied with decent flavors and aromas.

Presented in 12oz “stubbie” bottle with gold foil over top. I sampled this brew with some enchiladas and refried beans. Poured a dark amber/orange color with a medium rocky head, which faded down quickly leaving virtually no lace. Nose is malty with subtle pepper undertones. Taste is slightly sweet with touch of mild hops that fade away quickly. Even thought this is an slightly above average Mexican beer, it’s by far, much better than Corona.

12oz bottle at room temperature.

Highly carbonated head disappears like it was never there. A reddish amber, dark and pleasing to the eye, next to the slightly darker bottle. Aroma, what little there is, just hints at hops. The carbonation works along the tongue, with sweet malt running over it, shades of nuts and fruit. The hops don't seem to be there, which leads to it being on the sweet side just a bit too much. Slightly dry pull on the aftertaste, which is clean for the most part.

Not overly exciting enough to drink on its own, and not refreshing enough for a summer's day. Best as a companion to more interesting food. If this were the only beer on a Mexican restaurant menu along with other Modelo offerings and Dos Equis, I'd choose it. Would go great with chicken enchiladas in green sauce. Mmm... enchiladas. Cute squat bottle with a waist where the neck ends, the cutest one I've seen so far.
