Bottle label data: BEST BEFORE 16 10 14

Bright, light yellow body; gently rising carbonation bubbles; thick, foamy, white head. Very light, low-key biscuit malt aroma; sweet; grassy; lemony. Gentle malt grain sweetness; biscuits and honey; low-level hop bitterness. Medium-light body; semi-dry finish.

This beer really satisfies. There's enough heft and flavor points to let you know you're drinking something worthwhile while it simultaneously feels light and refreshing. Nice balance and deft depth of flavor and mouthfeel, this beer delivers the goods.

Having this beer unfiltered at the monastery as this is written. Pours golden yellow clear not brilliant. White head that does not persist, (I had this same beer filtered in restaurant earlier in cesky Krumlov and head was silky/rocky and very persistent). Low hop aroma mild to moderate round hop bitterness typical of bohemian sazz character. Malt character a bit strong and grainy for style. Overall unfiltered beer is less desirable then unfiltered.

Now the unfiltered pils:
Pours golden yellow with very slight copper tint. Head rocky with silky texture, dissipates quickly, nice round soft diacetyl butterscotch aroma usually undesired but works with this beer. Hop bitterness more foreword than the unfiltered with more spicy and floral character. The diacetyl gives better mouthfeel this is not as thin as the unfiltered. Very nice glass lacing. Taste is crisp, balanced, refined, malt and hop are very distinguishable. Diacetyl comes through as butterscotch but adds character and does not distract but complements complexity. Overall this is one of the best beers I have had in the Czech Republic. If you are her the combo of chesky Kumlov and a monestary that has been brewing for 100's of years is awesome.

After a brewery tour of Pivovar Eggenberg, I tasted several of their Pilsners/Lagers. Like most Lagers in the Czech Republic, it was clear, light and refreshing with very little aroma or hops flavor. The sweetness of the grain taste mixed well with the 5.% abv made a decent balance, but it was a little dryer than some of the other Pilsners/Lagers from the region. There are slight hints of earth tone from the Saaz (Chmel) but overall the hop flavor is very minor if at all existent. The carbonation was good and the beer had decent head retention, but it was slightly lacking in mouthfeel coming across as a little thin. While fresh on tap, this beer did not have any bad after tastes, however from another location where I tried one it possessed a slight metallic after-taste which I attributed to the length and location of storage at that location. While in Cesky Krumlov, the Eggenberger Pivovar is an excellent place to try some local Lagers at a decent price, but do not expect one of the best Pilsners/Lagers Czech has to offer.

Served in mug in Cesky Krumlov near brewery

A- light malty aroma. Appealing and somehow a little different.

T - markedly strong flavor, with big contributions from both malts and hops. Nice, slightly dry and long lasting finish.

M - excellent medium-to-medium high carbonation and medium body

O - Very nice, but I liked this notably less than the Eggenberg cerne that proceeded it. Still, highly recommended for style.

Got this one from a friend who was recently over in the Czech Republic.

Pours a clear golden color with some nice foamy white head that lingers slight around the edges. Respectable lacing.

Aroma is mostly malts with a hint of spices. Flavor is similar with just a little bitterness coming from the hops. Crisp and refreshing - goes down very smooth.

Not a huge fan of this style, but I'd drink this again.

Golden color, with a lot of bubbles. Clean. White average foam, quite creamy, one finger.
At the smell some malt, cooked grains, a bit of hop. Maybe a bit anonimous.
At the taste the same notes. It is quite clean, but nothing above average.
Dry. Maltiness.
Quite light in body, for a good drinkability.

Svetlý means light. This beer is a deep gold with a little haze. Excellent head and lace that lasts to the very end.

Slight vinegar aroma--but with all of the sauerkraut, this may be from the server's hand.

Full bodied and solidly dry. Great malt flavor with a spicy hop finish and aftertaste. I love the creamy body.

I drank this in the town where it is produced and it shows. This was a fresh pilsener-style (in Czech, only Pilsen can produce pilseners). Great tasting beer.

Brown bottle given to me by girlfriend who just brought its back from Czech Republic.

Lots of carbonation. Crystal clear and golden. Malty/bready/spicey smell.

Extremely crisp with assertive hop bitterness. Delicious. Metallic aftertaste is not necessarily a bad thing. Crisp and refreshing and highly carbonated.

I could drink this all night.

Standard brown half litre bottle. Eggenberg crest and 1560 as the original date of the brewery. Motif of barley and hops in gold. Mostly red and white. 5.0% ABV. Has the ingredients listed in Czech, but they don't mean much to me: Pitna Voda, Jecny Slad Cukr, Upraveny Chmel, Chmelovy extrakt. I deduce water, malted barley hops and hop extract, but I could be wrong.

Massively carbonated, and leaves a huge frothy head, despite the most timid pour. Fizzes all the way, leaving a snap crackle and pop on my eardrums. Body is very pale gold, and the head is white, and as I mentioned, massive. It's pretty solid too, despite its fizziness.

Slightly spicy hops on the nose, hints of paprika and cinnamon, and something a bit meaty. Even a little bit fruity as well, but you have to stretch the imagination a little for that. Very nice.

Taste is also pretty good, with the hoppy bitternress late on the palate, the front is quite sweet, but the hops soon cut through, with a fragrant spicy sharpness. It's not complex, but it does what it does well. Nice.

Despite the apparent carbonation, the mouthfeel stays round and full with out being too sharp or cutting.

Very nice, very drinkable. A fine example of a Czech pils. A suitable accompaniment to the wonderful town where it is brewed.

I had this lager on tap while visiting the Eggenberg brewery in Cesky Krumlov, southern Bohemia. Cesky is a wonderful town, with its medieval streets, winding river, and lively vibe on a summer night. After renting a canoe and paddling up the next town, we took in the brewery for our dinner. I had a half liter of the dark lager and then a half liter of this. Oh yeah, I also had dinner.

Appearance: Judging from the photograph I have of the beer in its half liter glass (which I took in the middle of the restaurant, thus causing the Chinese tourists next to us to do the same!), the beer was deep golden in color.

Smell: The aroma of the Czech pilsners I had were almost as good as the flavors. While this one did not have the ultimate pilsner aroma of the best pils I had in Czech (that was Budvar), it still had some of that bready and grassy aroma to whet the thirst. Saaz hops very much on the forefront.

Taste: Excellent. A little more understated than the Budvar and PIlsner Uruquell that we downed, but the freshness of drinking this at the brewery was evident. I liked the pilsner better than the dark lager, but both are excellent.

Mouthfeel: Medium bodied and filled me up more than I expected. So I had a more difficult time finishing my meal of roast duck (one of the best meals I've had in some time at a restaurant).

Drinkability: What are you kidding me? You're in a medieval Czech town, surrounded by a lovely castle on the hill, lots of small intimate restaurants serving up good hearty Czech meals, and the half liter cost about 60 cents. Any beer advocate could drink these all night. By the way, our entire meal for three, including four half liters, came out to around $13.

An Excellent beer from the wonderful town, Cesky Krumlov. Didn't tour the Brewery, but sampled a few pints at the Brew Pub. Although I can't quite put my finger on it, this beer has an interesting (in a good way) taste and feel in comparison to other Czech Beers of the same style. The bottle was slightly less enjoyable than what we were served on tap, but I still wouldn't hesitate to recommend it if given the opportunity to do a little sampling.
