Had at the Hotel ruze in Cesky Krumlov, home of this brewery. Very unique beer. Pours an extremely dark color with a 2 finger head. The smell is very toasted malts, little coffeeish. Such a rich carbonation with the first taste - much more refreshing than planned. Very malty taste and a clean feel while you drink. Not very familiar with tho style but so glad to have. Great beer

Eggenberg Cerne on tap at the brewery's Restaurant Eggenberg in Cesky Krumlov

A - Deep mahogany, very dark, with a large puffy tan head
Aroma: very inviting and rich aroma of dark malt; a hint of spices (from the hops?)
T - Full, rich dark malt flavor with a great balance of malts and excellent intensity. Some spicy hops on the finish.
M - Excellent carbonation and medium-full feel
O - superb example of style. Certainly one of the best Czech cernes I've ever had.

Dark red - ruby color, with a beige, thick creamy head. Very beautiful.
At the smell toasted, cocoa, a bit heavy.
At the taste, easily drinkable, more similar to the one on draught drank at the brewery. Coffee and chicory notes, with caramel.
Relatively light body, a bit of bitterness in the aftertaste, where you can find again coffee, cocoa and chicory.
Drinkable and pleasant, even if the draught one at the brewery was better, more fresh.

Again, I'm drinking this one in the town where it is made. And I like this one more than the ligher offering.

Beige head with excellent lace. Deep ruby brown color where light passes only at the extreme edges.

Dark malts gives this a strong mocha aroma.

Lots of coffee notes with a maple syrup background. There's also wonderful toffee and caramel flavors. Minor hop in the finish, but still balanced nicely. The body is thin, which is fitting for the style. Moderate carbonation.

I had this at the brewery restaurant in Cesky Krumlov. The beer came with a proper Czech style head, which lasted the whole drink. There was a subtle coffee aftertaste which balanced out the sweetness of the initial tasting. Of the many dark lagers I have tried in the Czech Republic, I would have to put this one up as one of the best.

I was in Czesky Krumlov and had this one fresh as can be. It was all sticky sweet to me and almost had more of a bock-like body and sweetness, then I began reading the label...Saccharin! Blech! It was bready sweet, and I'm sure there were plenty of dark malts to this effect, but saccharin man? C'mon! The finish was cloying. I got it all down, but another one was not on the menu my friends. Not bad, but a bit creepy.

Given a 4-pack of pivos when touring the Eggenberg brewery, now trying them back in the States.

Tmavý poured out a robust reddish brown color, standard fare for a dark Czech lager. Frothy light brown head, moderate lacing.

Smell was very bready and smoky. My first whiff reminded me of sniffing a bag of rye bread, then I noticed the smokiness. Very interesting smell, but not incredibly enticing.

Taste is bready and smoky, similar to the smell. It's quite good, but not excellent. Caramel flavors are present as well.

Mouthfeel is crisp and clean, very light oily feeling but not so much. Carbonation is prickly but not overwhelming.

Very easily drinkable, I could polish off several of these in a row. Seems to be a trend with Czech beers. And for those who like to get drunk, it's a necessity given the usual low ABV.

A good, well rounded beer. Not the best example of its class, but a good choice nonetheless. While my brew was free, I hear these can be purchased locally in the Czech Republic for under a buck per half liter. Now that's value!

on tap down the street from the brewery

dark garnet with two-finger tan head. dark munich malty aroma; very clear. solid hop bitterness (though little to no hop flavor or aroma)

lightly carbonated. a solid example of the style and a great-tasting session brew (just over 4%). glad i got the chance to taste it over there: i doubt eggenberg's (this one, at least) distribution is very wide

Comes in a Euro style .5 liter bottle. Best by date prenominantly displayed (in this case December 13 2003, reviewed late november).

Pours a deep brown/red. Head dissipated quickly, leaving a big hearty lace.

Smell is almost non existant. In fact the only thing I smell is a touch of skunk. Not the smell that gets you excited about a beer.

Flavor defies the smell thankfully. A little weak, but the flavors of caramel and coffee are very nice. Hops are present, but muted.

Feels too watery in the mouth. I really wouldn't mind a little more carbonation.

Pours a dark, indian red with a beautifully even, smooth, thin but persistent (especially around the edge) head. Black normally, red when held up to the light. Smells as a pilsner, with a tinge of chocolate.

Mouthfeel is fiercely carbonated, tasting slightly of bitter and chocolate. Very sweet but not terribly complex aftertaste. Makes me think of a lighter, less smooth and complex version of Krusovice dark (cerny). Still nice, however. Very typical of Czech dark lagers.

As I get halfway through, the weaknesses of the brew show through. The faint taste and oversweet aftertaste gives way to an almost cardbord undertone--still alright, but there's something off. Towards the very end, the malt gets overly sweet but the other tastes mellow out. Enjoyable, but not there are better bohemian darks.

This reminds me of all basic Czech lagers, a very typical brew. Pours a very dark red, head is nonexistent. Smells of sugar, coffee, and chocolate. Taste is a sweet, malty substance with hops being a background flavor only. Not much spice or any other distinguishing flavors, but nothing particularly wrong with the flavor either. Pretty easy to drink though, you can forget it is beer after awhile, which is one of the problems with it. Average brew, nothing special here but nothing wrong either.
