A mid strength ale like no other

Velvet smooth, Rogers weaves together the best whole hop flowers and toasted malts into a silky mid strength ale like no other. We’re always open to new ideas and seeking advice from others and with this beer we salute two great men and legends of Australian brewing who helped us along the way; Roger Bailey and Roger Bussell.

With a gentle nod to the traditions of fine English Ales and a distinctive Little Creatures hop driven slant, Rogers’ beer may be hard to classify but it’s reassuringly easy to drink…

Whole hop flowers used in the brewing process deliver a gentle bitterness and light citrus hop notes that weave together with roasted toffee and caramel malt flavours to create this unique, easy-drinking amber ale.

Malt: Pale malt, Wheat, Carapils, Vienna
Hops: East Kent Goldings (UK) used in the kettle, Cascade pellets (US/Aus/NZ) in the whirlpool with Stella (Aus) and Cascade (US/Aus) whole hop cones used in the hop back

A - Pours a red copper colour with a couple of centimetres of off white head that falls away quite quickly.
S - Floral & citrus hop notes - that's about all.
T - The floral & hop notes from the smell also come through on the taste with a slight malty background.
M - Fairly light bodied as expected for a 3.8% ABV beer. Medium, crisp carbonation.
D - I guess if I had to drink light this would be a pretty good choice.

A decent beer that deserves better ratings. There may be reasons for this.
First of all... when it was introduced in 2001, Australia had a very small craft market. Today, it has better beers than this; but they stand partly on the shoulders of Rogers.
Second, amber was not a popular color in the land of bright gold beers... nor is a fluffy head. As an amber, Rogers Looks like it wants to be different. It also Smells sweeter than the blonde malts. Tastes come in like caramel and mildly toasted nuts. Finished with just enough bitter.
Third, Rogers is brewed and promoted by one of the Aussie Big Boys. That gets low ratings Down Under, too. But it is popular and has introduced many Aussies to something other than tasteless blondes.

But I will defer further judgment and note that Rogers is listed as one of "The 1001 Beers To Drink Before You Die!" When the book was written in 2009, Rogers was good stuff. Today it is average; but has made others' markets bigger.

Awful. It tasted like mildly beer flavoured sugar water. It even set my teeth off it was so sweet. It's not listed as having cane sugar added post-brewing but I wouldn't be surprised. It's disgusting and an insult to such a glorious hop as East Kent Goldings.

Avoid at all costs - unless you like a beer-flavoured coke substitute of course. Yuk.

(Very disappointing that this has to be my first review. Sigh. But I thought I'd share my bad experience as a warning to others.)

330ml bottle poured into a pint glass.

Clear brown amber color, it tops with thick creamy light tan froth that stays with good retention before gradually collapsing to a long-lasting bubble sheet atop and leaving small amount of lacing.

Malt and malt and malt in the aroma, it dominates with notes of rich toffee, caramel, toasted bread, biscuit, and brown sugar. Hop is rather sunken with some suggestion of floral and citrus.

It is also very rich malty through the palate sensation with the loads of caramel and toffee, as well as toasted bread, biscuit, and brown sugar. Hop reveals in the middle with its floral and citrus to make some crisp and zest while malt reclaims its place in the finish with all the aforementioned flavors.

Light to medium body with some good crisp and moderate carbonation through the palate, the feeling is well-rounded with quite smooth mouthfeel and a dry finish.

Low alcohol but full flavor, there are lots of malt character ranging from roasted and toasted, caramel, toffee, bread, biscuit, and brown sugar. Good quaffing brew.

Dark brown with a deer hide tinge, and filtered with moderate carbonation. Topped with a finger of fast dissipating beige head.

Smells of caramel and orange candy.

Tastes of caramel, orange candy, hard water, malts, and a little bitterness.

Light body with moderately low carbonation.

Got in Chiang Mai, drinking it here at Chaya Resort and Spa, May 20th, 2017. Nice, low alcohol beer to sip overlooking the pool!

Format: a standard brown 330mL bottle with a pretty plain macro label.

Appearance: pours out a clear deep amber with limited carbonation visible. A thin white head fritters away fairly quickly.

Aroma: this just comes across as a lighter flavoured and lighter ABV version of the Bright ale - passionfruit and citrus.

Taste: yup, passionfruit and citrus here, same as the Bright Ale. Definitely lighter in flavour, but still quite refreshing. Far better than your average mid-strength, that's for sure.

Aftertaste: the flavours drop away a bit quick, which is to be expected from a mid-strength beer I suppose.

Mouth feel: fairly light in feel with a moderate but spritely carbonation. Not bad.

Overall: a decent beer when one wants to watch the ABV. Far better flavour than a mid-strength lager, and a far better price than any Brittish mid than I have come across. Decent for AU$55 for a case of 24 x 330mL, but I would prefer Bright Ale. I'd get a 6pack of Rogers as an alternative if I had to drive or stay reasonably sober.
