I had high hopes for this beer after finding it on-tap at RFD in DC. It was just.. okay. The smell was a little stale - bitter with some pine and grapefruit notes. Taste was similar. I was expecting a lit more hoppy flavor, but it seems more maltier for me. I'm surprised to learn that it's a Double/Imperial IPA. Wouldn't have it again.

A- Dark orange with a head that dissipates quickly leaving behind little lacing.

S- Very malty and sweet with some spiciness from the hops. There is a hint of grapefruit in the nose but it's very subtle.

T- Very sweet upfront, similar to the regular Hop Hog IPA. There is some spicy/fruity bitterness at the end along with the presence of alcohol. It's like most mediocre double IPAs, lacking in the hop department.

M- Smooth thick bodied with syrup like characteristics. Carbonation is on the low end.

O- A more alcoholic variant of Hop Hog. It's mediocre at best, I would drink it if given one, but I would refrain from purchasing another.

A: pours a clear amber color with a creamy tan head that lasts.
S: Pine, orange peel, and some earthy notes round out the hops. Fresh bread and caramel notes for the malt backbone. It is very balanced for a double ipa.
T: Pine and citric hit first and then a smooth crystal malt bready flavor give a well rounded sweetness with touches of caramel and golden raisins. Some earthy notes from more hops.
M: creamy , medium body with slight alcohol warmth. It is hidden well though.
O: Nice beer overall especially for balance. Could use a little more of a hop forward aroma. This beer is really smooth on tap and worth a try.

First had: ?
This review is for a recent tasting on tap at Pinocchio's, Media, PA

This followed the completely unpalatable Cricket Hill DIPA, and was a welcome alternative. Poured a clearish copper color with a half inch or so of fizzly white head that receded to a ringlet and left a few splashes of lacing on the glass. Aroma of floral and citrus hops...yep, it's an IPA. More hoppiness in the taste, citrus rind, lightly floral and earthy, with a solid bready malt base; bitterness lingered into the aftertaste, and the higher alcohol was decently concealed. Medium body, not a super top-notch IPA, but quite good overall.

On tap at paradise by the slice
review from notes drank on 08/23/12
It was served in a snifter, it had a nice copper body to it with a small lace around the edge. The smell was wonderfully full of citrus, mostly grapefruit. The taste was straight up wonderful hop taste with a nice crisp grapefruit hint, then on the back of the tongue came the nice carmel malt taste. It has a great mouthfeel a very little after taste. Overall this is a darn good beer.

Hmmm a Lancaster offering I've never had before... Interesting to find it running loose on 2nd street in Harrisburg at Anthonys. Served in a snifter, the brew appears an amber to burnt copper color. Fairly clear with a finger of off-white froth. The cap holds with a solid creamy finger that is supported by rising carbonation. Thick patches of lace stick to the glass,.

The smell is fruity from a scent of alcohol moreso than hops. As it warms up, some hop character of citrus and pine make themselves known with a faint inclusion to the aromatics. There is an equally bold inclusion of minerals, sulfur and cheese that get increasingly more assertive as the brew warms up.

The taste is toasty grain with caramel residual sweetness. It blends to sone fruity hop inclusion accented by a mild tinge of alcohol. The flavors mud palate are a bit buttery. Mineral flavors are present just as the aroma indicated. There is a tea flavoring that lasts into the aftertaste with a mellow herbal touch. Once warm, there is some cheese inclusion with sulfur,

This is a medium bodied brew with a modest level of carbonation. This is a pretty average offering with mineral aspects being as bold as the hop inclusion which is a bit of a failure as far as IPAs go. To this brews credit, the alcohol is hidden exceptionally well. I never for a moment felt like I was drinking a brew close to 10% alcohol.

poured from my growler into a curved pint glass. Purchased directly at the brewery.

A- Amber. Reddish/Orange hues. Darker that just about any double IPA I've ever had. Big puffy white head, but it dissipates really quickly, and there's little lacing down the glass.

S- Best part of this beer. Smell is big and citrusy. Pineapple, Grapefruit, Oranges and Mangoes.

T- Let down after the smell. You get a kind of generic citric hop bite up front, malts try to balance, but are beaten back by the rush of bitter, drying pine. A bit of alcohol heat, but really minimal for a 10.1% beer. It's just missing that something extra to put it over the top.

M- Thin for a Double. The dryness isn't off-putting. The best part is how they hide 10.1% in this. Alcohol is very well masked.

Overall- Nice, but out of my local breweries, I'll take Troegs Nugget Nectar, Stoudts Double IPA, or Victory Hop Wallop every time. This just isn't in the same class.

Transcribed from notes dtd Sa, 18 Dec 2010. On tap at the brewery.

It's back! I missed out on it during its initial iteration and I bgan to despair that I may not have a chance to try it. It was set before me with a thick, foamy finger of bone-white head with great retention. Color was a deep copper with NE-quality clarity. Nose was redolent with grapefruit-citrus hops. Holy Hopalicious, Batman! Bill Moore made an extremely hoppy beer! The Apocalypse may soon be upon us. Mouthfeel was medium with a massive hop presence on the tongue. Phew. I was perhaps unprepared for something like this from LNCBC. Finish was bone-dry, chillingly so, like a breeze blowing through a cemetery on Hallowe'en. Gadzooks!

Mr. Moore used to swear that he would NEVER make this style of beer, so as a good citizen, I have contacted the FBI to alert them to this situation. They have deployed agents to check his basement for the presence of cocoon-like pods. Pardon me, there is a knock at my front door ... Aaaaahhhh. I'm back. All is well, nothing to worry about, the beer is perfect, Mr. Moore is fine. Proceed as normal. The end?

I had this on tap at Cobblestone's -served chilled in a large taster.

The beer comes to me looking very clear medium amber w/ golden highlights and a full cream cap. The lace sticks well and the bead is ultra fine. The clarity is good and carbonation is visible in the ale. The smell has lots of caramel malt and slight butterscotch w/ hints of toasted grain scents. There is not much in the way of hop aroma even as it warms/opens up. The feel is pretty good with smooth bitterness like an English Strong ale backed by slight malt foundation, the overall balance is semi-bitter with a mild sweetness level and slight chalky aspect w/ medium low carbonation.

The taste has a moderately piney hop flavor w/ slightly fruity yeast and mild caramel essence. There is light citrus in the taste also w/ pitty quality and mild drying and alcohol flavor. There is a light medicinal effect from the grassy hops and alcohol combo w/ lightly chalky dry finish when warm. The overall drinkability is pretty middle of the road, it is good for the Lancaster Brewing's standards since their portfolio is kind of hit or miss at times. I don't really think this is something I want to revisit=such a low score. I was eager to try their attempt at a Imperial IPA, but it fails to impress me and isn't a very good representation of the style IMO.

A - Appeared a lighter shade of amber...great clarity...a one finger, white head that showed nice retention...good lacing

S - A solid combo of grapefruit and pine hops...the hops jump out of the gates but they are backed by some malts

T - The taste follows the nose rather well...and that's not a bad thing...again, the hops jump out first provide a quick citrus flavor...the middle provides you with a bready malt and sweet caramel malt that balances things out...the piney hops come on at the end and leave you with their bitterness

M - Medium bodied...crisp, mild bitterness

D - As for being 10% this has very nice drinkabillity...but as far as being a spot on IIPA...it's far from...but needless to say, this beer was pretty good in it's own sense and I could have had more of it
