Chad pours deep copper with an off-white/tannish head. The initial aroma is that of an Old Ale's sweetness without the cardboardiness that often comes with it. The beer is very malt-forward and slightly biscuity with a nice balance of hop bitterness. Chad is full-bodied, has medium carbonation and just a bit of comforting alcohol warmth. Chad finishes bittersweet with a lingering something that makes us want to eat chocolate...or as Chad himself suggests, brownies. Damn son!

Appearance: Amber, very good head.
Smell: Sweet, fruity, candy, caramel.
Taste: Very sweet. Candy, fruit, big caramel flavor. A little twinge of bitter citrus comes through. Alcohol is hidden behind the sweetness.
Overall: This beer just hovers on the edge of being too sweet. Big caramel and candy flavors come through and stick around a long time. Not too heavy, but the 12.5% does make its presence known after half a bomber. Interesting stuff, pretty cheap for a big beer, about $5.50 for a bomber.

A - Thick, murky looking rusty amber with a few finger off white head leaving 1 long, thick string of lace behind.
S - Very malty with toffee, caramel, dark fruits, rum soaked raisins, figs & plums. Light multigrain bread notes in the background. Very boozy but in a good old cognac type way.
T - Sweet and malty. Toffee and caramel jump out followed by lighter notes of dark fruits, rum soaked candy raisins, figs, brown sugar, herbal hops and alcohol.
M - Full bodied and slightly chewy but surprisingly not cloying for how sweet it is. Warming alcohol and dry lingering finish.
D - Congrats to Chad on his turn in the series. A very nice beer especially young at 12.5% abv. This one should be nice with a little age.

I'm very excited for this one! The My Turn Series has churned out 4 of my favorite styles now so far. If they end up making a weizenbock or a milk stout next, i'll be thoroughly convinced that Lakefront's staff has been reading from my diary.
Poured from a 22oz bomber into a New Belgium chalice.
A- Pours a rich deep dark amber/red with a bubbly slightly fizzy, two finger, slightly off-white head. The head stuck around for a while before dissipating down into a rather thin collar around the edges of the chalice and a bit of lacing that danced atop the surface of the beer.
S- The aroma, while not super intense, is rather enjoyable. Fruity with the smell of darker fruits mixed in with a slightly metallic alcoholic tinge that disappeared after warming a bit. The notes that really stuck around were the notes of the dark fruits, namely figs, dates, dark dried cherries, and raisins. Some caramel and toffee notes jump out as well along with some more bread like malts.
T- Damn malty! A straight-up malt bomb with a slight bit of fruity spiciness to it from the hops. You can really taste the barley malt in this one as well, and the alcohol is definitely noticeable (Though not as noticeable as in, say, Olde School barleywine by Dogfish head.). There are some strong notes of dark fruits, just like in the aroma, such as Figs, dates, raisins, prunes and black cherry. There are also some brown sugar and caramel notes as well. Towards the end as it started to warm I even detected some more, nuttier notes, from the malts.
M- Heavy and slightly creamy with absolute perfect carbonation for a barleywine.
O- Very good. Lakefront never truly disappoints though. I cannot wait to see how this ages in a year(or two!).

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter.
12.5% ABV, 74 IBUs, 25°P, 17°L, Bottled 02/13/13
A - The fact that a beer so strong is able to maintain it's head is miraculous. The pile dense ivory foam is packed so tightly it looks more like the froth from a nitro-tap pour and gently rests on the clear rusted amber beer with finesse, all while leaving dots of lace on the snifter.
S - My my, Chad is voluptuous. Deep maltiness unveils layers of complexity ranging from the easily identifiable caramel and toffee notes to the dense bread loaf and fruity undertones of dried fig, plum, and suggestions of raisin. It's not hard to miss the strong alcohol aroma of this fresh barleywine though; soothing heat wafts out with some aggressiveness.
T - Smooth malt continues through the flavor from the aroma with it's caramel and toffee notes while adding a sprinkle of brown sugar to the mix of fruit and bread for a pleasant malt flavor that finishes with some earthy, dry hoppiness and solvent alcohol heat.
M - Full bodied and smooth, this beer is borderline chewy while distancing itself from being thick or cloying. The big maltiness lingers with sweetness that's balanced by both dry alcohol, and hop bitterness. The finish clearly features plenty of alcohol but it never burns, the 12.5% ABV has a soothing warmth perfect for the last few weeks of cold weather.
O - Chad is big and frankly, boozy, but don't hold it against this incredibly fresh beer. This one will undoubtedly age wonderfully, expounding on it's already fantastic malt depth and fruity nuances. Chad is another fantastic chapter in Lakefront's My Turn series!
