Brown with tan head.

Toffee and caramel type smell.

Sweet malt, caramel, toffee, bready wash. Pleasant enough but simplistic.

Mouthfeel on the flat side.

This was fine, the overall flavor profile is somewhat enjoyable, but it was lacking the mouthfeel, complexity or extra oomph to really feel like something was going on. One-dimensional.

The beer poured a brown color with a slight tan head into the sampler glass. After the appearance is where the problems started. Counting Scottish Ales among my favorite styles, I can say this beer lacked most of the qualities that I love in a Scottish Ale. Brad had a sweet malty aroma that was almost like smelling syrup. In the initial taste, I never got the maltiness that one expects in the style. Instead, it seemed to be a heavy does of sweetness like an unfinished candy product. The malt finally comes through in the aftertaste, but it is a dry syrupy malt. Initially, there seemed to be a little bit of a buzz about this ale, but then it died down. I know why.

Pours a dark chestnut brown color with a half finger off-white head that immediately fades into a thin ring. Cloudy and muddy looking with poor head retention and very minimal lacing.

Earthy, mineral-like aroma with a very weak malt presence countered by grassy hop notes. Dirty, soily hops along with some faint smoke and sweet caramel malt. Smells like a dirty, slightly hoppy beer with some cola mixed in.

Medium bodied with tight carbonation and a surprisingly heavy spice presence that lingers over the slightly smokey malt presence and earthy hops into a bone dry finish. Dry and peppery with hints of charcoal, ashtray and smoked meat followed by slightly sweet caramel malt and an aggressively dry and bitter hop character. Just a strange combination of harsh flavors that make this beer tough to drink. The hop profile is too one dimensional for my preference and the burnt, smoked malts are overdone, giving off an unpleasant acrid character.

A- The clear dense garnet body has a bubbly light tan head that fizz into a thin ring. There is a strong carbonation of big bubbles pushing to the surface.

S- The clean aroma has some faint hints of smoke but no malt or pot caramel notes at all.

T- the dark nougat has some toffee notes with a dry cardboard/syrup note and a malt bitterness in the finish that really grows to dominate. That bitterness lingers. There is a water flavor that also grows as the beer opens up.

M- This beer has a medium-light mouthfeel with a fizzy finish.

O- This beer is light and thin with a very faint malt flavor and the malt roasted bitterness is the only flavor that really comes through.

22oz bomber poured into a Samuel Adams perfect pint.

A - One finger of vanilla head recedes to a small ring of foam. The color is a hazy light brown with red hues. No lacing to speak of.

S - Nice complex crystal toffee malt with some caramel sweetness. A hint of lemon citrus.

T - Starts off with very rich caramel malts that have some dark/ripe red fruit characters, maybe some plum and raisin. Also a fraction of smoked malt to my liking. A touch of chocolate. Dries up a little bit with a late hop flavor finish. Still has a touch of lingering sweetness along with some alcohol warmth.

M - Good, full body. Light to moderate carbonation.

O - This scotch ale really shys away from any biscuit or aromatic malt but has a great deep caramel smell and flavor. Just the right amount of hops to balance for this style. Alcohol shows its stylistic presence. Has a good feel to it but am a little disappointed in its appearance.

Bottle shared by Brad - how appropriate.

The beer is chestnut brown with a half inch of beige head. The aroma brings light spice, brown sugar, malt, toffee, caramel. Pretty tasty beer. Light in body with a smooth feel. Drinks like a lager. Mild sweetness with a touch of fruit. Subtle notes of smoke. A nice, easy drinking Scotch ale.

Appearance: Amber-red with a small head.

Aroma: Malty and smokey.

Taste: Starts off bready with a slight burst of hops but quickly turns seriously malty and then finishes with a smokiness and smoothness.

Overall: Still have yet to have an American Scotch that compares with the real deal. This beer was good and well worth the price. Does a decent job with this style (wee heavy). Cheers!!

Reviewed from tasting notes.

Mahogany color with good clarity and a single finger of off-white foam that has decent persistence but only minimal lacing left behind on the glass.

Smells mostly of caramel and toffee malts with a large dollop of earthy noble hop aroma spectrum and a faint garnish level twinge of peat smoke.

Flavor capitulates most of the aroma characteristics...the exception being the somewhat sweeter malt levels than I had expected from reading the nose. Don't get me wrong, this is not like a Doppelbock sweetness, just... about 10% sweeter than I had expected it to present. No big deal, as the garnish of peat smoke works well as an anchor keeping the sweetness under control. A light breadiness in the flavor appeared for me after I had let the glass warm up for several minutes, kicking in about mid-sip and afterwards.

While the body was rich and heavy in texture, I thought it could have used about 15% more carbonation because it started to get somewhat sticky and clingy.

22 oz bottle poured into a snifter.
7% ABV, Batch #002, 22 IBU, 18°P, 15.5°L, "Bottled During:" empty.

A - Brad's My Turn pours an absolutely gorgeous crimson mahogany color with excellent clarity. A well-formed light khaki head rises only to leave small fingers of lace on the snifter. Legs dribble down the glass with each passing sip.

S - Earthy and dry, Brad kicks off with a heavy dusting of cocoa and dry, crumbly dirt followed by sweet caramel cube and shards of toffee. As it warms up, it opens nicely bringing the sweetness of the malt forwards and pushing the earthy qualities back. No hop aroma to be found here.

T - A malt-lover's dream, Brad blends faint butterscotch with toffee and gooey caramel for a beautiful kettle caramelization of the malt. Earthy dry cocoa comes through on the finish ever so slightly. A nice trail-mix like blend of dried fruit and nuttiness enters after a few sips of this tasty beer.

M - Incredibly smooth and soft-feeling with a nice viscous, medium-full body, Brad's Scottish ale has a great level of moderate carbonation and just enough dryness on the finish to keep the sweet malt from becoming cloying.

O - The My Turn series from Lakefront continues full-steam ahead with Brad's Scottish Ale, a full-bodied, full-flavored Wee Heavy. Warming alcohol along the finish puts the exclamation on this fantastically malty, simple, and ever-so-enjoyable brew!

Poured from a 1pnt 6floz bottle into a pint glass.
Very happy to finally get my hands on this after searching for it for a whole month. While lakefront never posted an official release date they did hint on their Facebook page that this beer would be released in March and I've only started to spot it recently now in late April.

A- A beautiful deep mahogany brown clear enough to allow ample light penetration when held up to the light. Has a fat slightly tan head that is somewhat fizzy. Some visible carbonation bubbles rising from the bottom tot he top of the beer.

S- Has a very light smell. Gives off a slightly burnt malt aroma with some light caramel notes. There is a slightly hoppy and earthy bitter finish to the aroma that couples very well with the scent of the burnt malts.

T- This is a sweet beer with notes of caramel as well as some smokiness and a bit of a burnt malt flavor. There are also some sweet biscuity bread notes.

M- Heavier with a fuller body. Very well carbonated leaving a smooth and crisp feeling in the mouth.

O- Slightly dissapointed only because it was not as sweet and heavy as I was hoping it would be. However this beer is very good, and very drinkable. A perfect Scotch ale for anyone trying to test out the style, very traditional. Has characteristics typical of many of lakefront's brews. Worth the try if you're a fan of Lakefront Brewery.
