SMaSH Ale–Hüll Melon pours soft gold with a rocky white head. Mild honeydew and strawberry aromas from the Hüll Melon hops combine with mild caramel and biscuit flavor from the full-blown Vienna malt bill. Easy-drinking with a lingering melon finish.

Lakefront Brewery, Inc. "Hüll Melon"
12 fl oz brown glass bottle, "BEST BY: 06 JAN 2018-B3"
$1.83 @ Cherry Hill Wine, Liquor & Beer (Wegmans), Cherry Hill, NJ

Notes via stream of consciousness: It's poured a hazy amber-orange body beneath a full head of fluffy white foam that settled to a densely creamy half inch thick cap. Very nice lacing is left behind. The aroma is fruity and melon like although I can't pick out a particular melon to describe it. It's also a bit floral, and there's some sweetish grainy, bready, and lightly caramelish malt there as well. It's not a bold hop aroma but you can't miss it. The flavor is a bit different than you might expect given the aroma. It's fruity but sharper than you might think melon would be, and in all honesty, more like plum and grape and apple and peach although there is some melon to it. The bready malt remains, and it's got a very firm bitterness to it that lingers in the aftertaste with a touch of spiciness. I wouldn't call it out of balance but the bitterness does present itself clearly. The more I taste it the more fruitiness I find although the melon is still fairly elusive. Medium bodied and creamy with a moderate, fine-bubbled carbonation. Overall it's interesting but not particularly convincing the Hüll Melon hops are anything special. Perhaps a simpler golden malt would have allowed them to come through clearer. Or not.

I got this off the single shelf at a grocery store outside of Milwaukee whilst there for a hockey tournaments. It poured a hazy copper with thin white head that is leaving a spotty lace. The scent faint melon hint. The taste was nicely balanced and easy to drink. The mouthfeel is lighter in body with good carbonation. Overall it's not bad.

A- clear gold, off white head, soapy lacing not sticky
S- at first strong herbal bready dankness, once it sits a minute smells like sweet aloe vera, and under rippend strawberry, some herbalness and plum.
T- strange, seems to change with every drink, starts herbal and bitter with a bite, notes of melon, plum, bread,
By the end of the glass was very tame with flavors of a watered down fruit cocktail sauce. Some cherry/grape notes.
M-average a bit heavy for as light as it looks.
O- if you don't focus on the flavors a whole lot it's kinda like an Ipa/Oktoberfest. But if you pay attention the flavors seem to change with time and are quite complex.
Good beer to drink!

3.5 down the middle.
a) Pours a clear gold body with modest head and one dot of lace.
s) Very crackery malt base laid on with strawberry and melon fruit. Clean and fruity, almost like a Kolsch.
t) As the nose, with more flavors: grass, honeydew melon, berries, but marred by peppery, but slightly soapy finale.
f) Thin, light, marred by soapy finale, leaving you ready for another, DIFFERENT beer to change your palate.
o) also ran.

12 oz bottle served in a lager glass.
/pours with a light copper colored body. It's hazy but plenty of rising carbonation can still be seen. Creamy, durable, off-white head with ample lacing.
This single hop beer confirms my impression that I really like the Hull Melon hop variety.Besides the obvious melon notes, there are suggestions of tropical fruits and faint berries. The aroma also has a relatively strong strawberry note.
Medium body with medium-high but soft carbonation.
Overall: get it while you can!

12oz bottle, served in a snifter glass. Pours a darker caramel body, one finger thick white head, good retention, fair lacing. Smell is grapefruit and melon, a bit of sweet caramel and touch of sugar, minerals. Smells fairly sweet but refreshing. Flavour is mostly a bland caramel sweetness, sugar, touch of melon and a moderate-heavy mineral-forward bitterness. There isn't much hop aromatics here, and seems like it's fairly bitter, which is kind of interesting in of itself. Solid, but nothing too spectacular. Mouthfeel is medium bodied, good carbonation, bitter, mineral-forward finish.

Pours a clear golden color, not much of a head.

The smell is pleasant. Strawberry and melon with crackery malt, a bit of caramel sweetness. Reminiscent of a kolsch-style beer.

The taste follows the nose. Light, crackery malt. Strawberry sweet, melon along the lines of a honeydew. Very mild, peppery spice. Mild bitterness in the aftertaste that could be better integrated.

Not a bad beer, but kind of middle of thē road. I enjoy this particular hop, but I don't believe this beer fully capitalizes on their usage.

I am a fan of Lakefront beers to begin with. I got this particular release at a nice discount locally. I think it is a fine beer. I am going back to get some more.
