Out on the town with the inlaws from Stevensville- smallish place, nice mellow jazz playing for a minimal lunch crowd. Gourmet menu has items such as a huckleberry-date purée, peppered maple bacon, goat cheese and roasted red pepper burger; daily flavor of hummus; pesto chicken wrap with goat cheese and pesto aoli; an fish tacos. Routine offering of flagship brews- I had the seasonal harvest ale, fresh hops, apples, dry bodied easy drinker of an amber. Service is extremely friendly, service is fast and thorough. A must try for lunch, and I bet the locals pack this place on a weekend!

This place looks like it's the happening spot on a Friday or Saturday night... too bad I was there right at it opened at 11:30 on a Sunday. There's a stage in one corner surrounded by canvas bags of what used to hold hops. Nice. It's got a large downstairs with plenty of space (and free popcorn machine) as well as an upstairs area. While I'd expect the place to get pretty noisy when full, I noticed some noise dampening inserts so at least it seems they've tried to address the issue. The selection has a good 8 or so beer list of standard with "Brewer's whim" seasonals. At $3.50-4.50 a beer (and great beer at that) it's got pretty good pricing. It was $8 to fill a growler. While I didn't order any food, my friends got a few appetizers and they seemed to really enjoy the grub. I'd like to come back here again one night once I've found a couch to crash on in the area!

We took the hour drive south from Missoula to go look at a dog at a shelter in Hamilton, and decided to grab a pint and a bite on the way home.
The place is kind of dive-ish but in a pleasant way. Painted an ugly but charming yellow all over with plywood on certain walls. The beer is great, probably the best in west Montana with the exception of Blackfoot River in Helena. Red Dread and Single Hop Pale are both incredible. Nut Brown is great for the style. I had a bourbon barrel stout that was decent.
This is the only brewery I've been to in MT that sells food. There is what I think to be a misconception about serving food in breweries here. A lawyer friend has never been able to find anything that prohibits it. In any case, I had a nice fish sandwich and great coleslaw.
Service was good and unobtrusive, the best kind. Two sandwiches and two pints took us to $24, which is not bad at all.
If you're nearby, definitely stop in here for a peek.

stopped in the bitter root one sunny afternoon on my way to my uncles ranch nearby.
located in an industrial setting in the dusty downtown hamilton vicinity...rustic interior, handful of barstools and some tables off to the side. full of locals and regulars, somewhat obviously due to its location.
maybe 10 taps, with some interesting stuff - a single hop IPA, belgian barleywine, huckleberry honey beer, rye IPA, etc. I had the rye and my girlfriend had the huckleberry, both of which were actually quite good.
the bottle their beer in bombers and i was able to sample a handful of other offerings off the premises later in my trip.
i found this by doing a random BA search, and never would have known of it otherwise. if driving through the area, stop in. they have some pretty cool merch too, if interested.
didnt even see any food, but it looked like it was an option.
