Notes:
It takes a brave beer to stand up to a Maine winter. Gritty McDuff 's Scottish Ale is returns every January to help you weather the season. Scottish Style Ale is our interpretation of the robust brews native to Scotland. Generous quantities of Pale malt along with Munich and Caramalts give this ale a deep and complex profile. Scottish Style Ale is just a shade darker than our Bitter, with a rich, slightly sweet first impression on the palate that rounds out to a satisfying maltiness and a medium-dry hop finish. At 6.3% ABV it's hearty but not overwhelming. Sure to please the Braveheart in all of us.

Pours the color of clear apple cider. Tightly carbonated beige colored head. Retention is minimal.
The aroma is sweet and fruity with a hint of spice (nutmeg?)
Malty and a bit astringent. Starts out sweet with hints of caramel, but becomes dryer mid-glass. Slight hint of apple peel. Mild bitterness that lingers for a bit.
Medium body, average carbonation. Overall a pretty average beer.

Cask pour in a tumbler pint, the beer is a slightly hazed, bright, ruby-copper coloring with a frothy, filmy, clingy, off-white head. Aromas of scotch and caramel sweetness, with a subtle roasting. Tangy sweet flavors of scotch and floral thistle, with a boozey highlight. Very smooth across the palate, with a clean, hoppy bitterness at the end. Rich, smooth feel across the mouth, with a slightly scotchy and sweet aftertaste. Smooth, clean, slightly drying finish. Tasty brew.

Bottle dated 12/12. Stupid new bottle artwork not as snazzy as the old labels.
Clear copper color. I had few of these in my Gritty Dozen mix pack and one looked pretty said with a fleeting head. Another had a head that stayed until the bottom the glass and strung up a few lacey ribbons. Looks polarizing.
Aroma features that Scottish ale malted milk ball trademark but pretty faint.
Malty sweetness all over with some candied fruit in the middle and cocoa and a big herbal bitter in back. Hoppy for a Scottish ale but it fits.

From the 12 fl. oz. bottle with an expiration date of Dec 12. Sampled on April 26, 2012. It pours a handsome looking deep amber with little to no head, which tends to disappoint me. The aroma has a pleasant malt sweetness to it, some yeast, with a bit of bread. The body is in the medium range or maybe just a bit under. The taste is upfront sweet and malty with licorice and a moderate bitterness. It ends off-dry. This is an adequate take on the style.

A: Pours a slightly hazy golden yellow/orange color with a 1/2 inch of head
S: Very malty and slightly odd fruity smell. Definitely didn't expect that amount of fruitiness in a Scottish ale... Also some toffee and caramel
T: Again, very malty with less of the fruit (luckily) and more of the toffee and caramel notes. Some slight smoke, but not as much as I'd expect from a Scottish ale
M: Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Nice and easy going down
O: Certainly not what I expected. Not bad, but like I said, a little too fruity in the nose and not enough smoke in the taste makes this a little disappointing

A- Golden Brown, thin cream colored head that dissapates after some time, leaving a small amount of lacing
S- Butterscotch, a little malty caramel, maybe a little smokey- overall nothing too standout
T- Malty, sugar, butterscotch, a slight bitter hop finish
M- Smooth, refreshing carbonation, dry finish, very refreshing!
O- I really enjoyed this one, very refreshing as well as drinkable, Great session beer!

Into a pint glass:
A: deep golden brown colored boy with a short white head that leaves good lacing
S: caramelized malts, vanilla, butterscotch and just a touch of hops
T: sweet through previously mentioned flavors, malty
M: medium, smooth, crisp, sessionable, slightly dry aftertaste and finish
O: this used to be better, it seemed more complex when I've had it before, still good, just not stellar

Poured from a 12oz bottle into a US tumbler pint glass.
A: The beer is a deep golden brown color, with a short of-white head that fades slowly and leaves a thin lace on the glass.
S: The aroma contains caramelized malts, vanilla, butterscotch and touches of fruit and hops.
T: The taste starts out with sweet but mild flavors of caramel, vanilla and butterscotch. The malt character is hearty and there is a bit of fruit in the background. The hops presence is mild but complementary and brings a good balance. The after-taste is slightly sweet.
M: Smooth and a little crisp, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is a bit dry and slightly sticky.
D: Tasty, goes down easily, slightly filling, decent kick, good representation of style, this is a decent beer to drink for a long time if you’re in the mood for the style.

A - An active swirling pour... Almost three fingers worth of chunky airy and slightly creamy light tan colored head... Decent retention gives way to a full slightly creamy lace... The color is a light caramel brown... Loaded with carbonation, a good portion of which clings to the glass and only a small portion of which rises in the middle of the glass... Some lacing clings to the glass...
S - Artificially sweet caramel... Toffee... Brown sigar... Molasses... A bit musky... Perhaps a touch of peat... A bit cloying...
T - Muted caramel... Burnt sugars... A bit of smoke... A bit of peat... A bit of woody notes... Some minor bitter hops...
M - Medium bodied... Some prickly carbonation... Slightly burnt texture... Dry finish...
D - Scotch / Scottish Ales are my favorite style and I find Gritty's to be a very underrated brewery, unfortunately the combination doesn't work for me in this instance... This one is still average and drinkable, but a slight disappointment for both the style and the brewery...

Light creamy head, crystal clear copper colored.
Nose is light malts, light brown sugar, creamy molasses, light herbal earthy hops
Taste is creamy, light malts, sweet molasses, light sugar, no real dark malts, creamy, bitter, herbal earthy uk hops, light minerality
Mouth is med bodied with decent carb
Drink is decent, light minerality and herbal hops, dry finish, fairly bitter

A- Beautiful amber, light brownish color
S- Smells almost as beautiful as it tastes
T- An absolutely delicious caramel malt flavor, a little bit of hops in the after-taste
M- Very creamy with a nice, but mild, carbonation
D- A beer this good practically begs to be continued to drink

Pours an amber/copper color with a thin head, fades fast, not much lacing, a few surprising floaties are found.
Smell is strictly caramel malt all the way, not much of a hop balance, fairly one-note.
Taste has solid carbonation with a nice clean crispness, light amount of creaminess, caramel malt is the show and the show comes and goes quickly, flavor doesn't linger for long except for a hint of toffee.
Decent for a Scottish ale, but Pemaquid remains my go-to.
