Notes:
Based on an extinct yet favorite tipple of the De Ranke owners, Nino Bacelle and Guido Devos, De Ranke Kriek emulates the famed Oud Kriekenbier from the defunct Crombé brewery in Zottegem. De Ranke Kriek is a mixture of two blended soured pale ales and Girardin lambic, all steeped in whole fresh cherries from Poland and then aged for six months. A unique and much sought after Kriekenbier.

From the bottle.

Appearance: thought this looked kind of ugly. Color of a bad bruise with a slightly purple head. Definitely unique.

Nose: Lots of fresh, sweet, fruit. Juicy raspberry, blueberry, and cranberry. The cherry doesn't come through until the end and its sort of a candy black cherry aroma. A bit of a floral note over everything.

Taste: More fresh berries. The sourness comes through here though. Tart cranberry and cherry, rich, almost savory raspberry. There's a hint of flowers and grape skins as the fruit subsides. Finishes with a lingering cherry jam sweetness.

Mouthfeel: Really nice here. Big and thick. Perfect for all the fresh berry flavors going on.

Overall: Don't come into this one expecting a true kriek. The high alcohol and juicy berry flavors make it come off more like an American fruit beer, but a very well executed one. It doesn't have that trademark kriek funk and complexity but it definitely works as a sweet and sour sipper.

Draft at Moeder

Looks reminiscent of the Cuvee. Just a beautiful deep red and pink head.

Lots of cherries and funk. Can't ask for much more. Light sweetness is present in the aroma and taste. The tartness sings through your mouth and towards the back before disappearing with the beer down the throat. There is some oak in your dry mouth. Grapefruit in the nose as well. big brett in the nose.

Has a smooth and creamy mouthfeel. Medium bodied and carbonated.

Appearance is a nice bright clear red with thin layer of white head. Nose is relatively funky up front with a heavy amount of cherry and vanilla to follow. A bit of oak and vinegar come through as well. The taste is absent of the funk that the nose featured. Incredibly tart up front, nice cherry quality throughout. Mouthfeel is somewhat thin with moderate carbonation. Overall, very tasty.
