12 oz can poured into a pint glass. Canned on 10/05/12 (just over 3 1/2 months old).
Pours out deep golden color with just a bit of a sunlight orange color. A nice fluffy, somewhat soapy looking 3 fingers of head after the pour. It eventually settles to a nice retentive layer while leaving some nice lacing behind. A bit of a cloudiness to it.
At first I get a real pithy orange/ citrus peel aroma. As it warms, some vegetal matter , floral, mand hints of onion become apparent, but the main focus remains the citrus peel. Just a bit of malt heft in the back.
Orange, grapefruit citrus, floral, and vegetal matter with just a hint of onion. Just a bit of a caramel, bready malt provides a bit of a backbone. Not a whole lot of bitterness for an IPA. A bit off in the flavor due to the weird vegetal flavors going on.
Smooth with a rather low amount of carbonation. Some resin left on the palate.
Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this beer.

12oz can poured into a room-temp pint glass.
A- Hazy golden-orange color with enough carbonation to show through the sediment. I poured this twice into two seperate glasses because the head and lacing were massive. A billowy, off-white colored 2-plus finger head that tapers to a minimal head; it never goes away. The lacing is so thick and clingy that it looks like foam on the inside of the glass. Amazing. If I didn't see it for myself, I'd question if it were for real.
S-Citrus IPA all the way to start, strong grapefruit aroma. The malts and sweets come alive as it warms.
T-Mld citrus flavor with a big malt backbone. The hops and yeast battle it out.
M-Light and crisp, it seems softer than 7% abv. The finish is malt sweet and yeast dry; can I get some hop bite here, please?
O- I took two of these just to check the accuracy of my pour, so it can't be bad!

The beer poured out from a can. It had a slightly cloudy, golden-yellow colour to it. Complex nose; smelled malty with sour, citrusy-sweet grapefruit. Hints of butterscotch. The beer was light, tart, and citrusy in flavour with a crisp, clean finish. Slight malty aftertaste.
Would I buy this beer again? Probably not.

I find this beer pretty bad. Way, way too sweet. I barely sense any hops at all. Rated at 70 IBUs but seems like 1 or 2 IBU is more accurate rating. Its too bad becuase I've been to 21st Amendment many times and like their beers for the most part. This beer may test better on tap, but I don't recall.

Looks marvelous. An orangey-amber with a substantial head. Carbonation active, enthusiastic, but not too obnoxious. Smells of pine and citrus, tastes the same but followed quickly by a malty sweetness. (It might be a little too malty for my tastes.) Lacing is decent. Dry finish.

APPEARANCE: Light orange, bordering on yellow/straw in color. The head is white, fluffy and about three quarters of an inch thick. Retention is fairly strong, leaving a nice ring of lacing up top. That lacing continues down the rest of the glass.
SMELL: Traditional West Coast IPA aroma - big citrus, with grapefruit out front, a little passion fruit and other tropical fruits. A touch of grassiness lurks underneath, but basically the hops are pulling 100% of the weight in the aroma department. Very nice.
TASTE: The tropical fruits actually really lead the way here. A lot of passion fruit up front along with maybe a touch of banana. The hops are also nice and spicy. Again, this is interesting in the sense that the hops seem to be doing all the work in the flavor department, including providing balance. The tropical fruits are a little sweeter while there is a very pleasant, but also fairly strong, bitter, grapefruit and lemon zest finish.
MOUTHFEEL: Medium bodied. Medium carbonation. Right in the middle on the sweet/dry scale. I suppose you could say this is a well-balanced beer.
OVERALL: I have to say, I had only recently discovered craft beer when I moved out of San Francisco in 2008 and I really wish I still had direct access to 21st Amendment. I would hang out there after Giants games, I knew one of their cooks fairly well and I really enjoyed their beer when I found it around town. I never truly appreciated it though. Now I do. This is an outstanding IPA, one of the best in a can, maybe even competing with Modus.

Poured with a lightly hazed, golden colored body. 1/2 finger, white head.
Aroma had a big malty presence with some floral and citrusy hops. Bready and mildly sweet.
Taste was pleasant. Floral hops upfront followed by a mild sweetness, fair amount of maltyness and some bready flavors. Mild sweetness turned to a crisp, mildly bitter finish. Floral, citrus and a bit orangey. Light lingering bitterness that was a bit resiny.
Mouthfeel was medium body, medium carb and a crisp finish. No signs of ABV.
Overall this was a nice IPA. Good balance of sweetness, maltyness and bitterness.

On-tap at Cannery Row Brewing, on to the beer:
The color is a cross between orange and yellow. The body is clean, the head on top retaining fine, and good splashes of lace clinging to the glass. The aroma is strange, bringing to mind the aroma of cider. There's some resiny stuff detected, but to my nose, it smells more like a cider with hops than an IPA.
Much sweeter than I though. Malt forward at first, though to be fair, the hops don't provide much details at this point. That cidery aroma I detected has made itself present in the beer's taste. There's also notes of white grapes. The second half of the taste is where the hops make some kind of a push. At this point, the hop levels can be described as moderate, and they provide a little bitterness and resin. It's medium bodied, with gentle carbonation.
This is either the case of a poor IPA or an unlucky sample. I'm hoping it's the latter.

It comes from a can and looks better after the pour then many bottles. A nice light orange color with nice lacing. I get a scent of malts and seems to be sweet. I got an upfront hop taste that seemed to go malty quickly and blend in the finish, Caramel and big on hop flavor. The mouth feel is medium, the hops seem to linger on, its also a bit bitter. I bought this on election night based on the founding fathers on the packaging, not to mention I've wanted to try 21st amendment IPA. "Brew Free! or Die."

Can to Tulip
12oz
Canned 08/06/12
Purchased at Davis Beer Shop for $1.99
App- A medium colored orange with some deeper oranges in the center and a bit of gold around the edges. A good frothy and whipped 2 finger head stuck around for a bit, with really nice cling and a lace wall down the side of the drink side.
Smell- Its a bit of a more malty ipa, blended with a good aromatic nose and then moves into a bit of a dry earthy and herbal note. A bit sweet on the final pulls and then has just a touch of the 7% on the finish.
Taste- It was good. It wasnt great but I enjoyed it. The beer was a bit of a bigger canned IPA. A nice big ABV balanaced out by some creamier malts and then a bit of a good bitter hop addition. A bit of that earthy and grassy flavor from the nose comes into play as well.
Mouth- More of a medium bodied IPA with a lower creamier carbonation. Residual flavors include the creamy malts with some dry hops and a bit of the abv on the finish.
Drink- A nicer IPA. I enjoyed it. Probably would buy again if I could get my hands on some in So.Cal.

Served from can into tulip glass:
A:
Pours to a copper-amber color, not cloudy at all with a good two-finger head and extensive lacing, Carbonation persists lightly in the glass and creates a rather inviting "drink-me" combination of color and head for an IPA.
S:
Malt notes are most prominent, added with some banana followed by a backing of pine and citrus without much hops in the nose. Caramel is there, and combined with the malt it creates a certain aroma of sweetness.
T:
A bit of carbonation goes with the caramel-sweetness found in the nose earlier. Not at all bitter for a 7% IPA, very drinkable with a lace that persists until the glass is finished. The slight banana notes come into the taste after the caramel and malt to create a good finish. If anything, a little less carbonation would have helped a bit here.
M:
Very drinkable, not too full in the mouth but enough to make me enjoy it. A very slight bitter aftertaste comes to light, but not overbearing.
O:
A very enjoyable IPA with a bit more sweetness and caramel notes than the usual. Not a ground-breaker but something I might pick up again.

Poured from a 12oz can into a nonic.
This is a beautiful looking IPA, a radiant orange with two fingers of persistent head. The aroma is also very nice, it's got a solid amount of tropical and citrus hops with caramel malts and a bit of mint. The taste is complex, with citrus and tropical hops interacting with a solid backbone of caramel malt and a mint flavor that really makes this one unique. The hops are a little subdued, but it works. The mouthfeel is lighter and moderately carbonated, and the drinkability is great. Overall, I really like this IPA. It's got a unique flavor that sets it apart from the IPA pack.

A: Pours a clear deep golden orange to copper in color. The beer has a finger tall creamy very light beige head that slowly reduces to a small thick patch, a very thin film covering the entire surface of the beer, and a thick ring at the edges of the glass. Moderate to significant amounts of lacing are observed.
S: Light aromas of caramel malt sweetness with heavier aromas of citrus/grapefruit and pine/resin hops.
T: The beer has a light underlying caramel malt sweetness with very light amounts of bitterness. But overall the flavor of the hops are dominant for this beer with the primary flavors coming from citrus/grapefruit with just slightly less pine/resin hop flavor as well.
M: Medium bodied with moderate amounts of carbonation. Crisp with some light amounts of dryness in the finish.
O: The alcohol of this beer is well hidden and the flavor is well balanced between the sweetness from the caramel malt flavors and the bitterness from the hops. This makes the beer pretty easy to drink and quite enjoyable. Definitely one to get again and the can form factor makes it nice to football tailgating.

This beer poured a golden-yellow color with a fluffy two finger white head that left generous lacing on the glass. On the nose, I get a lot of pine and then a hint of sweetness. There’s also some citrus, but more along the lines of oranges, as opposed to grapefruit. On the taste, I’m taken aback a little. There’s a bit of funk going on in the background that is definitely NOT pleasant. Luckily, I only got it on the first sip. I also got some pine on the taste and a bit of citrus. The carbonation is moderate and pleasant. Grass also comes to the front after having a few sips. The citrus comes out closer to the end with a very mild hint of sweetness. The bitterness isn’t intense either at 70 IBUs. The finish is bitter and lingers on. This is a medium bodied beer and easy to drink. But, this isn’t a favorite beer of mine. There are so many good IPAs that this doesn’t stand out. Not a bad brew by any means, but very pedestrian. Don’t rush out and get it.

Poured from a can into a tumbler pint, the beer is a ahzy, orange-copper coloring with a tall, frothy, light, bright white head of about an inch and a half. Aromas of spicy and piney hops, with a strong resiny overtone highlighted by grapefruit and pineapple sweetness. Flavors are smooth and balanced, with a solid toffee backbone supporting the tropical fruit sweetness and the spiced, dry, and green hops characters. Roasted throughout, with some fresh cut grass qualities to the hops, as well. The aftertaste is resiny and sweet at the same time, both balanced and tasty. Tangy, slightly drying finish. Very smooth and drinkable brew. More mild than most IPAs that are out and around today, but there is something to be said for a nice, sessionable IPA.

12oz can into a pint glass.
Pours a slightly hazy medium gold with a white one finger head. Good head retention and lacing.
Aroma of citrus hops along with a little bit of pine and caramel.
The flavor really has quite a bit going on. There is tropical citrus from the hops along with a little bit of mint. Caramel is present from the malt and works to balance out the hoppyness. Bitterness is high and leads to a clean finish. The mouthfeel is a little thin but does not detract too much.
Overall, I pretty good and unique IPA. Not sure it is something I would drink all the time but it would be nice on occasion.

Appearance: Awesome burnt gold body with a solid head. Poured it out of the can because it was my first time having one, so it left some nice lacing on the glass.
Smell: Bready with some malt. Faint citrus. Smell does not stand out for this brew, but that's fine.
Taste: Drinks very easy. Caramel malt coupled with some citrusy hops blend perfectly. The grapefruit finish is awesome, definitely my favorite part. Complex hop blend with a solid malt backbone. Alcohol contributes to a warm finish that compliments the grapefruit well.
Mouthfeel: Medium (even light) with standard solid carbonation.
Overall: Solid beer that I would try again and again. Good stuff!

Poured from can. Canned 7/12/12. Interesting to note this is brewed in CA and canned in MN for those unaware.
Pours with nice light head, dissipates quickly. Murky almost, but still amber when held up to light.
Smells sweet. Almost like raisins or a plum. Very flowery, notes of cinnamon????
Taste as expected. Frontal hops, delicious malt backbone. I've had others not quite as fresh as this and it certainly taste way better now. It's very smooth as it goes down but has a nice zing to it as well. Velvet-like. Light resin left on tough and mouth to savor.
Overall a great beer. One of my go-tos. Love the can and contents. A notable IPA.

A lovely light burnt amber with a white head of good size and consistency. Quite a bit of lace and very clear with some carbonation evident. Smell is full of bready notes, caramel, malt, and toffee with a hint of butterscotch. Hops are somewhat subdued for an IPA but give a dry leafy bitterness to the nose. Flavor is well balanced with the nose giving a good representation of the palate. What is not revealed by the olfactory is the firm grapefruit presence in the finish. Solid malt core is full of caramel, toffee, and sweet whole grain bread. Finish is dry and mildly astringent with a hop oiliness that lightly coats the back of my mouth. Complex hop blend is at once forward and well balanced. Feel is medium light and smoothly carbonated. Drinkability is superb with sessioning coming to mind in spite of the high abv. Speaking of which it only shows itself in a touch of warmth in the taste so let the drinker beware. A solid and delicious IPA. Buy some!

12oz can in a Sam Adams glass
canned on 4/24/12
A: Dark yellow/light copper color with a thin light tan/off-white head, an average amount of lace. Looks like an American IPA.
S: Citrus and tropical fruits and an "oddness" I can't place, not unpleasant, just "odd".
T: Very sharp bitterness with a definite malt backbone. There are piney hops along with some fruitiness but the flavor is not doing it for me. This is the last of the six-pack over the last 2 months and every one I have been trying to figure out if I taste coconut or if it is something else. Whatever it is, I think that it might be the "oddness" in the smell.
Looking at the website, I think it must be a weird interaction of the dry hops (Amarillo, Ahtanum, Simcoe) because it can't be the Columbus and Cascade of the finishing hops.
M: Crisp, with a lingering bitterness that seems very dry on the tongue. Lot of carbonation.
O: Glad I tried it. It is a well made beer that flavor wise does not work for me. Worth trying if you like big IPAs, but I won't purchase again.

Appearance: Hazy orange/pale color. Bright white head. Some floating sediment(which is unappealing in this beer).
Aroma: They say it uses six different finishing/dry hops. Definitely getting Centennial. The sweet candy-like notes are there from that hop. A little pale malt underneath the heavy dose of hops.
Taste: Big hop flavor and bitterness up front. Transitions into a good malt presence while maintaining that bitterness for the most part and then finishes smooth. Not a big fan of the candy-like sweetness in here from some of the hops, it takes away from some of the bitterness without adding any real flavor. Since 21st Amendment calls this a West Coast IPA I was hoping for more tropical fruit or at least some citrus. Instead, there is only an obscure sweet flavor from the hops. Also some heat from the alcohol and a nice hint of pine. Forgoing the unwanted sweet flavor, the hops and malt are very well balanced.
Mouthfeel: Good level of carbonation and medium bodied. No complaints here.
Final Thoughts: This one tastes/drinks more like an English IPA and had it been labeled as such probably would have been rated a little higher. If that's your thing then this one is for you. However, if you are looking for the grapefruit or more tropical flavor then this beer will let you down. Would I buy it again? Perhaps. It wouldn't be unwanted as part of a sampler pack.

Canned 06/22/2012, poured into a perfect pint glass. Fluffy light tan head, about three fingers. Some sudsy retention. Golden or light orange color. Smell is sweet and malty, with citrus aroma as well. Flavor however is a citrus blast, with more prominent features from the smell (sweet and malt) coming through after the up-front citrus. The malt and sweetness are still noticeable, but definitely behind the citrus. Somewhat carbonated but light at the same time, with a wet and juicy finish. Overall I like this beer quite a bit.

Review from 4/2010 notes. Poured into a flute glass. Pours a nice orange amber color and dense white head. Aroma of citrus fruit and piney and citrus hops. Canned on 6/22/12.
Pours a hazy dark orange with a 1 inch foamy orange-tan head that settles to a film on top of the beer. Foamy streaks of lace form around the glass on the drink down. Smell is of lots of citrus fruit, citrus zest, and orange/tangerine juice aromas. Taste is super citrus forward with citrus fruit, citrus zest, citrus juice, honey, and some malt on the finish. There is a mild amount of hop bitterness on the palate with each sip. This beer has a good level of carbonation with a crisp mouthfeel. Overall, this is a very good beer with great aromas and flavors that make it super easy to drink. A real surprise.

Medium sized white head above a clear honey golden colored beer. A nice lasting lacing on a light bodied beer.
Aroma is mixed malts with hops giving this a light sweet and light sour mix, with floral and light citrus dominating.
Light bitter citrus hops in the foreground of the taste added with light pine, lemon and even lighter sweet malts.
A pretty light bodied IPA with a with a light IPA taste that is a little different than most IPA's out there, but thats not a bad thing.
