Appearance - Clear golden/amber with an average size fizzy off-white coloured head. There is an average amount of carbonation showing and there is some decent lacing. The head lasted for around 3-4 minutes.

Smell - Hops, malts, grapefruit, lemons

Taste & Mouth - There is an average amount of carbonation and I can taste caramel, malts, and hops. There is also some grapefruit, lemons, and apricots. There is also a bit of a corn/graininess. It ends with a malty grainy yet hoppy bitter aftertaste.

Overall – Really good dose of hops, but there is a little bit of adjunct flavour going on. Just a little too much grain/corn taste. Still a good beer, just not as good as the some of the other AIPA's.

I used to live at 2nd & Bryant in the Clocktower, been to 21stA many times, and have a friend who's an investor, so I was thrilled to find this ipa at my local whole foods in middletown nj. (when in SF, you must go to 21st A and a ball game if you can, lovely sunny neighborhood.)

The beer is evangelical about emerging from a can, and I 100% agree with the 6 reasons to can besides the 6 delightful brews inside. Love the packaging. Want to see more craft in a can, such as Oskar, 21st Amendment, Anderson Valley, Avery, Sierra Nevada, Brooklyn. Who's next?

A: Hazy, apricot colored. Lovely, head dense but fades, with medium lacing in a Leffe tulip glass.
will try in a .5 cylinder tmw.

S: Hop Aroma, slightly catty, citris, herbs, flowers and a little stink.

T: Great taste, with lovely arc. Great with food (Shrimp, Sushi roll, mashers and ratatouille. (Thanks whole Foods). My wife, kept stealing sips and loving it (saying alot). "you drink good beers".
Smooth, solid hop bitterness yielding to complex multi-flavors of citruis, herbs, tobacco, california soil.
A nice finish with biscuits and esters, fruits, backbone. Definitely want another! Look forward to trying tomorrow with Sausage cassoulet that Mimi will make.

F: Nice tingle, bubbles, medium body, great feel. Great with food. Lots of richness and strength.

A solid IPA, almost an EIPA, big, bold and very drinkable. Hop heads gotta try this!
As some can do, this one can taste/ feel a bit soapy toward the bottom of the glass (my one ding).

12 oz can poured into a pint glass.

A: Pours an amber color with tiny specks of yeast floating around. The head is a creamy two finger offwhite shade. While retention isn't the greatest, I love the texture and the lacing it leaves behind.

S: The hops have faded a bit on this one, but it still provides hints of pine and grapefruit. There's a lot of caramel and toffee malt featured here, as well. Decent aroma here.

T: I first notice some minor piny hop flavors to start, before it washes away with a lot toffee-esque malt. The finish is earthy with touches of fruity esters (unheard of in an American IPA, it seems); to the point where one could mistake the back end for excess booziness. The earthy nature of the malts aren't my cup of tea, but it's okay otherwise. Seems to be a bit more complex than many others in the style.

M: It's well attenuated for all of its maltiness, creating a fairly dry brew in spite of the faded hops and creamy feel. There is a bit of lingering sweetness on the front of the palate, which is expected.

O: Gotta love a canned IPA, even if this one isn't fantastic. I'll have to give this a second chance fresh.

Into a mug:

A: hazy golden orange body with a two finger foamy white head, nice clingy foamy lacing is left in the wake

S: maltier than most AIPA`s, hops come out more as it warms

T: mainly sweet, once again becomes bitter as it warms leading to a nice balance, orange aftertaste and finish

M: light to medium, sessionable, carbonation seems right

O: well, actually I like it, but almost seems closer to an EIPA, probably have again

12 oz. can poured into a Duvel Tulip

A: Small head that diminished almost immediately and leaves a very slight film. Absolutely, no lacing. A cloudy/hazy golden brown of a yellow.

S: It is nice combination of citrus and pine notes. I dare say it almost smells a bit unique for an IPA. There is something else in there tying it all together but I can't place it.

T: It is nice mild and plain IPA. The flavor profile is quite dull and flat. You get the pine with a bit of citrus, but that is it. It isn't bad but it isn't great. The aftertaste is the same, it is there but you really have to focus on it to notice it. Also, it is a bit yeasty with a focus on pine., which isn't bad at all.

M: It has a nice refreshing mouthfeel that is slightly crisp but not so much that you get that carbonation "burn". It rises and then diminishes rapidly into a smooth feel that goes down easily.

O: This is my first IPA out of a can. I wouldn't say that it is a stand out but it also isn't too bad either. Not sure if I would pick this as a regular though. It is decent but not a standout IPA. The only thing that it really has going for it is that it is available in a can.

Wow. Forget lace. I may need to rinse my glass before I can get another can in. The color is just kind of mediocre. The head is some serious business. Love it. Mouth feel is 'there' not over the top, but good. Smell is very, very nice. The taste lays on your whole tongue. After taste is almost spearmint. Crazy.

Serving type: 12-ounce can. The canned date on the bottle of the can is “02/04/13.”

Appearance: Poured into a pint glass. The color is hazy, pale gold. Two fingers of thick, creamy, eggshell-colored head dissipated slowly and left trails of foam along the glass.

Smell: Mmmm. Fresh dose of citrus but nothing overpowering. Light grapefruit, orange, and lemon. Caramel and pale malts.

Taste: It offers that sucker punch mentioned on the beer’s webpage; nice bitterness right off the bat. But that is all it seems to be right now. The citrus is tame and I wonder if the trip in my luggage affected it. It is mostly lemon, though there are light flavors of grapefruit and orange. Light caramel, pale malts, and toffee round it out.

Drinkability: Hmmm. I am torn. This was awesome stuff when I bought it in San Francisco last week. Since then, I flew it back to the Midwest and got the flu. My taste buds may not be 100 percent again — or the beer may not be 100 percent.

Enjoyed this 12oz can out of a small snifter glass.

A: Pours a clear dark golden hue with a thin, white head that slowly dissipates down the side of the glass leaving a nice trail and ending in a solid lace.

S: Hoppy aroma with mild citrus notes.

T: Tart, bitter, and hoppy flavor. Slightly acidic middle followed by a dry hoppy finish.

M: Medium body and medium carbonation.

O: This was a really good IPA – nice hoppy and refreshing.

Pours a nice gold with a great, long-lasting foam.
Definitely a "light" variant of the IPA breed in terms of bitter/hops taste.
Easy mouthfeel with only a little that lingers between sips - all pleasant.
This is an IPA I could drink plenty of without feeling like I'm eating hops.

A- nice pour into Mason Jar. Very even but frothy head. Almost looks too good to be true.

S- Nicely balanced malt and hop mix- getting citrus and pine. Slightly sweet caramel edge rounds it off. Pleasant but not overbearing.

Note: not off this tasting, but I have had cans be slightly sulphurous and stale to the nose. This one was canned 6 weeks prior to tasting.

T - A little sharp upfront but not aggressively hopped - you're getting them, but it's actually the smooth citrus / malt combo which comes through late which defines this one.

M - fizzes gently on the tongue.

O - I'm a fan of this beer but prefer it on tap. This is a can review - I've had some uneven experiences, I think mostly to do with freshness. I would urge anyone buying in a can to check the date stamp. It's not a world beater, but I think if I had to go for a canned beer this would be it.

21st Amendment is a great brewery/company and Brew Free or Die is probably my favorite of their offerings. It is a great mix of hoppiness and maltiness. The citrusy taste that you get at the end leaves you coming back for more. Great IPA. Highly Recommend.

Pour to pint glass. Golden color with fluffy 1/2 inch head leaving nice ring of lacing after a minute. Nose is fruity , grapefruit and something else herbal, verey pleasing.
Taste follows nose well with fruity bite of hops with sweet malt behind. Nice balance.
Mouthfeel is medium with creaminess , very easy drinking with a little fizz.
Overall a solid IPA , just what you expect from left coast

Canned on 7/31/12. Half can to a snifter to get the look, the rest enjoyed out of the can

Pours a deep orange and gold with little transparency. Solid finger of foam with above average retention. Very nice and sticky lacing, only real fault is how cloudy it is, probably a result of it's age. Aroma of strong hop and rigid malt. Some citrusy and pine notes shine trough with orange and grapefruit zest with a hint of alcohol. Taste follows the nose well, lots of hops with a malt that definitely is a work of age. Citrus shines through and everything still melds nicely though. Mouth is good, crisp and medium body. Very smooth and creamy, this stuff goes down tremendously. Overall this is a great beer, I'd love to try it fresh

A: A hazy amber color. Two plus fingers of off white head. Good retention and lacing.

S: Pine, biscuit, and sweet citrus.

T: Sort of follows the nose. Also tasting hints of pineapple. This one is pretty malty, but also a little bitter.

M: Medium body with a medium low carbonation.

O: A solid IPA. Nice sweet fruit flavor. The overly sweet and bitter components are a slight turn off.

A: Pours a hazy amber with a half inch pillow of dense white foam. The head dissipates to a thin film in a few minutes, leaving good lacing.

S: Sweet citrus, especially orange and grapefruit. Smells like a west coast IPA.

T: Sweet to start moving quickly into hops through the mid palate and finish, though the sweetness remains and provides some balance. Relatively strong citrus notes throughout, especially grapefruit on the finish. Pretty nice.

M: Medium to full body, medium carbonation.

Overall, a solid IPA and a good option in canned 6-pack form. I'll probably buy this again.

A: poured from a 12 oz can into a pint glass, honey amber colored with a big fluffy white head that lingers leaving good lacing, very slightly hazy

S: citrus hops, grapefruit, lemon, sweet caramel malt, pine

T: bitter grapefruit peel up front, lemon zest, middle is balanced by caramel malt sweetness, finish is pine resin

M: full bodied with proper carbonation and a nice lingering aftertaste

Not your average Portland Safeway pick. Bright yellow-orange hue. Solid carb. Heady front of grass and resin. Biscuit malt, honey viscosity mouthfeel. Bitterness grows in mid taste, and builds with the flavor profile - very balanced. Piney overtones remain with some booze waft.

A: well I think I shook up the can because when I opened it it foamed everywhere when pouring there was a huge head that lasted for a wile....pourd verry light for an ipa realy golden looks like a pilsner

S:light smell hoppy citruss fressh cut grass

T: again a light tasteing ipa I think I needa try it again maybee I mest up the can but it tasted light hops,citrus with a corny aftertaste

M:kinda chewy fealing left in mouth

Overall: was disappointed I think I shook the can cuz the carbonation is weak and its not as bitter as I was hoping so I hope next time will be better

Reviewed from notes. Poured from 12 oz. can into a CCB pint glass.

A: Pours a clear light gold, with a 1 1/2 finger white head that fades fairly quickly. Low visible carbonation.

S: Muted overall. Citrus, spice and melon hops atop some biscuit malt.

T: Follows the nose. This doesn't have a terribly big hop flavor. Moderately bitter after an unexpected amount of sweetness from malt, although at least it's not a caramel predominant flavor.

M: Light body, mild alcohol presence, and more carbonation sensation than the appearance would suggest.

O: Well, I'm not thrilled, but it isn't objectionable or anything. This wasn't a terribly fresh can (about three months old), but the expected hop presence is missing.

12 oz can poured into a pint glass. Canned on 10/05/12 (just over 3 1/2 months old).

Pours out deep golden color with just a bit of a sunlight orange color. A nice fluffy, somewhat soapy looking 3 fingers of head after the pour. It eventually settles to a nice retentive layer while leaving some nice lacing behind. A bit of a cloudiness to it.

At first I get a real pithy orange/ citrus peel aroma. As it warms, some vegetal matter , floral,mand hints of onion become apparent, but the main focus remains the citrus peel. Just a bit of malt heft in the back.

Orange, grapefruit citrus, floral, and vegetal matter with just a hint of onion. Just a bit of a caramel, bready malt provides a bit of a backbone. Not a whole lot of bitterness for an IPA. A bit off in the flavor due to the weird vegetal flavors going on.

Smooth with a rather low amount of carbonation. Some resin left on the palate.

Overall, I wasn't too impressed with this beer.

12oz can poured into a room-temp pint glass.

A- Hazy golden-orange color with enough carbonation to show through the sediment. I poured this twice into two seperate glasses because the head and lacing were massive. A billowy, off-white colored 2-plus finger head that tapers to a minimal head; it never goes away. The lacing is so thick and clingy that it looks like foam on the inside of the glass. Amazing. If I didn't see it for myself, I'd question if it were for real.

S-Citrus IPA all the way to start, strong grapefruit aroma. The malts and sweets come alive as it warms.

T-Mld citrus flavor with a big malt backbone. The hops and yeast battle it out.

M-Light and crisp, it seems softer than 7% abv. The finish is malt sweet and yeast dry; can I get some hop bite here, please?

O- I took two of these just to check the accuracy of my pour, so it can't be bad!

The beer poured out from a can. It had a slightly cloudy, golden-yellow colour to it. Complex nose; smelled malty with sour, citrusy-sweet grapefruit. Hints of butterscotch. The beer was light, tart, and citrusy in flavour with a crisp, clean finish. Slight malty aftertaste.

Would I buy this beer again? Probably not.

I find this beer pretty bad. Way, way too sweet. I barely sense any hops at all. Rated at 70 IBUs but seems like 1 or 2 IBU is more accurate rating. Its too bad becuase I've been to 21st Amendment many times and like their beers for the most part. This beer may test better on tap, but I don't recall.

Looks marvelous. An orangey-amber with a substantial head. Carbonation active, enthusiastic, but not too obnoxious. Smells of pine and citrus, tastes the same but followed quickly by a malty sweetness. (It might be a little too malty for my tastes.) Lacing is decent. Dry finish.
