Notes:
A deep, dense and thoughtful beer with many layers of flavors, from sweet and soothing maltiness to hints of chocolate character and background. All co-mingle into a smooth, silky flavor that is contemplative but robust. While this beer was top fermented keeping true to historic roots of the style, the brew was conditioned as a bottom fermented variation, producing a softer roundness in the final product.

Snagged a 12oz glass of this ($5.00) on 07APR12 during a visit with Alewife.
My tulip was fileld with a deep, dark, opaque brown bier, oily thick in its appearance. Had minimal head, mostly a smidge of bubbles clinging to the edges, with little to no lacing. The nose was rather mild, with some roasty bitterness wafting forth. Body was good, a nice medium, and it felt good traversing the tongue.
Light sweetness first alit on the palate, with some dark choco and roasty notes. A bit of espresso action and bitterness mixed in, along with some earthiness and a touch of floral hopping at the finish. Not overly complex, but well-made nonetheless. It gets much better as it warms. Prosit!!

Off the tap in Bristol this beer was an opaque black color with one finger of tan head. The retention was very good, especially as a skim and collar and the lacing equally solid. The aroma was sweet, chocolate malt, molasses and roasted malt. The flavors were similar with the added elements of dark caramel, coffee and tobacco. The chocolate was big and well defined, reminiscent of a Tootsie Roll candy, yet the beer finished surprisingly clean! The mouthfeel was smooth and rich, the body full and the carbonation good. I really liked this beer, all the flavors elements were there, it looked good and it hit the style (including a whopping 8.3% ALC!) right on mark. Totally recommended -even if a little dangerous!
