look: 4 | smell: 3.75 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 4 | overall: 3.75
Appearance: Pours a hazy goldenrod with a meringue-like head that sticks and shards
Smell: Biscuity malt with a hint of caramel buttressed by piney hops; the spicy rye twist completes the profile
Taste: Malt forward, up front, with the biscuit and slight caramel tones arriving; though the hint of caramel persists from start to finish, the middle is dominated by the piney hops and spicy rye; somewhat dry, after the swallow, despite the caramel
Mouthfeel: Medium body with moderate carbonation
Overall: An interesting twist on the IPA concept though I would prefer the beer to be dryer and crisper

Rye of the Tiger pours an orange stained gold color. It’s a bit hazier. Definitely more than expected. Backlighting gives it a slightly more orange look. It’s a nice color. It’s topped with a slightly off-white head that rises to about a finger in height. It’s rather quick to recede, leaving a nice, sticky web of lace clinging to the glass. Looks good.
The nose kicks off with strong hop notes. They seem primarily citric. Grapefruit and orange are the strongest scents. Rye definitely adds a spicy twist that complements the hops well. Smells like a good bit of pepper’s there as well. The malt base smells a little sweet and crackery. The malts definitely smell secondary to the hops and the rye. I like that. The role players are given plenty of room to shine. Alcohol is a little noticeable, but isn’t too strong.
The flavor is perhaps a tad better than the nose. The malt base is just a little sweet up front. It’s a bit crackery, but doesn’t have too strong a flavor. It anchors things nicely without being overbearing. The hops and the rye play very nicely together. Hop flavors of grapefruit and orange are very flavorful and provide a nice bitter kick. The rye adds a spicy twist that works extremely well. It honestly seems like the rye and hops are given equal space to shine. Neither counters the other. It works well. Alcohol isn’t all that noticeable. Goes down spicy, hoppy, and dry.
The body is medium. Carbonation feels nice and soft. It has a smooth feel and is pretty drinkable for its size. I could easily handle a couple of these in a sitting.
Rye of the Tiger is really impressive beer. What makes this one work so well is the interplay of the hops and the rye. They work so well together and allow the other plenty of space. It’s really good stuff. Easy recommendation.
