12 oz. bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, 2013 vintage but unclear bottling date (best by 8/11/13 stamped on the side), poured into a DFH quasi-IPA glass, drank over ~30 minutes.

A: 4.75 - straw golden-yellow coloration, impressive clarity (can both see or read through), minimal white head dissipates into subtle glass lacing with no detectable hop haze/residuals, medium alcohol legs; very similar appearing beer to Founders' Double Trouble

S: 4 - and her it diverts from Double Trouble...picking up lots of malt characters in the aroma --> biscuit, caramel, toffee with very little hop aroma; some alcohol aromas in the background become more prominent as the beer warms

T: 4.25 - on the front of the tongue, there is a bitter presence but not overwhelming so and this is the majority of what I get from the hops); after that, the malt qualities predominate on the back of the tongue - again, caramel, toffee, sweet fruit (like a tangerine with sugar on it); some lingering alcohol notes and malts coat the tongue

M: 4.5 - full-bodied, 9.1% is present but not overwhelming so; moderate-to-large carbonation and alcohol legs

O: 4.25 - I have never had this beer before as Great Lakes does not distribute to CT and was looking forward to it; overall, it tastes to me like the quintessential "Third Coast" IPA with malt>hop presence; I have heard and read that this beer has a "huge hop presence," but, compared to some West Coast hop bombs, I find this humorous; the malt presence, however, is distinct and very pleasant; if you're looking for a change from aggressively hopped and/or less bitter/more tropical tasting DIPAs, I would give this one a shot; however, I prefer the former so much that I'll unlikely be coming back to this one this year after this four-pack

What a cool bottle! Perhaps some of my favorite artwork seen lately.

Glass: Port City "Belgian Style" Globe / Snifter.

Appearance: A mild but straight-down pour produced about a half a finger of off-white head that lingered for a minute or two until settling down a somewhat thick ring of foam around the edge of the glass. The color is a beautiful golden-orange, and it is completely clear.

Smell: Hmm, my first thought is that I'm excited to taste this one! A very delicious sweet mango scent is at the front, with perhaps a bit of citrus, and a definite pine backbone.

Taste: So subtle and sweet, this is a hop bomb that has been tamed to a level that is less bitter than some. Easily drinkable, there is a definite pine as well as some sweet citrus notes. Malt comes through in the mid-palette.

Mouthfeel: About perfect for me, personally. A medium to light body with medium carbonation. This beer is refreshing and drinkable at the same time. The finish is slightly dry with a tiny bit of that characteristic hop oil presence.

Overall: A solid DIPA that I would seek out and drink more of. Well done, Great Lakes!

Enjoy by 08/09/13

a: transparent orange-copper. scattered bubbles floating to the top. Thick white head.

s: sweet citrusy ( mostly grapefruit) hops. caramel malts

t: burst of grapefruit hops (with an even quicker burst of bitterness) which then transforms into malt sweetness which lasts through to the end.

m: moderate carbonation & mouthfeel. quite sticky & syrupy. Finishes a tad dry.

o: Decent GLBC offering but I much prefer the artist formerly known as Alchemy Hour. This one is a bit too sweet & syrupy. Love the label art though.

Pours a transparent amber with a small white head.

The smell is citrus hops and sweet and malty.

Taste is sweet and malty upfront with the fruity hops coming in and the end. There is a hoppy bitterness at the end which really hangs around. There is also a smooth buttery, creaminess and biscuit flavour.

The mouthfeel is slick, sticky and syrupy. The carbonation is medium bodied.

Overall a very sweet and not overly bitter, reminds me of 90 minute. Hides its abv very well. I really like this but it is too sweet to have a lot.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/26/2013. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big mango, pineapple, grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, pine, floral, grass, honey, and floral earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great hop complexity and moderate malt balance. Taste of big mango, pineapple, pine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange zest, floral, grass, honey, bread, and floral earthiness. Moderate pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tropical fruit, citrus, pine resin, floral, grass, honey, bread, and hop earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of hop flavors; with a moderate malt balance that doesn’t overshadow the hops, and zero cloying flavors lingering after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent DIPA! Big hop flavor complexity with moderate malt balance; and dangerously smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.

12 oz. bottle poured into a NB snifter.

A - Beer pours a pale golden color. A one-finger head of eggshell-white rather loose foam sets up and then quickly falls down to a 1/4 finger head that lasts for several minutes. When this finally disappears, a thin sheen of lace rests on the surface with a very fine ring around the edge of the glass. Held to a full-spectrum light, the beer is a rich golden wheat, moderately opaque with a bit of cloudiness, with just enough sight to be able to see a few tiny streams of bubbles very slowly rising up from the bottom through the center of the glass.

S - Citrus and resin hops mix with caramel malts with a subtle background of somewhat astringent alcohol. Ruby red grapefruit sitting right beside freshly made buttered French toast. Orange marmalade on a lightly toasted English muffin. As it warms, the caramels of the malts push even more forward into the nose, along with some subtle, lighter floral hops. The hops and the malts become very well integrated, trading off in the nose rather than one dominating. At the end of the glass, notes of lemon and vanilla were noticed. If you like to experience a number of different nose profiles, be sure to give a glass of this plenty of time to warm up.

T - Grapefruit and orange, just like it smells. Solid, full base malts support rich caramel malts that bathe the tongue with bits of English butter cookies. A little boozy on the back-end, but overall, the ABV is hidden. Piney, almost woody hops through the finish that really wash away any cloying from the richness of the malts. It's a really interesting, positive effect.

M - Decently fizzy. Moderate carbonation. Moderate body with a nicely integrated structure made of solid components. Clean finish that's well-balanced; neither noticeably sweet nor dry. It tails off slowly, leaving echos of both the malts and the hops to savor and encourage further tasting - a really nice effect.

O - This beer is a good example of why to do tasting notes. As a result of this, I'm going to pair this with a breakfast of a citrus bowl, French toast, and grilled light sausages - for dinner. In general, I don't enjoy standard IPAs because I find them unbalanced. This beer, and other Imperial IPAs I've tried, however, seem to be brewed with a much richer malt bill (and higher OG) that stands up to the IBUs, so not only is the sum of the parts bigger and fuller, it's also much better balanced. Another great creation from one of best breweries in the region.

A- Pours a medium orange-gold hue that is moderately clear. Only a slight haze disrupts the view through the body of the beer. Small, bubbly head is around a little bit, then is reduced to just a whisper of lace on the top. Lacing isn't that great, but it does have some alcohol legs.

S- Fairly strong hand of hops here, but not as strong as expected. Hops are extremely piney with a strong resin scent. Smell eludes to a hint of balancing malt sweetness on the back end.

T- Hops that were somewhat lacking in the scent come rushing back in an attack on the palate. The hops flavors are still very heavy in the pine and resin department. Hops are dominant and aggressive, but not overwhelmingly so. Towards the end, a hint of light malt flavors mix in before a final, bitter hop bite finishes the drink cleanly.

M- High in carbonation, to the point that it is almost "stinging." Medium body is slightly heavier due to the strong hop profile, but not so much to make it a sipper. Alcohol is not noticeable in the taste, but could easily catch up with you after drinking one quick or having two.

Overall, a solid IIPA. This and Burning River remind me a lot of Sierra Nevada Pale Ale and Torpedo in tandem. Only difference is that this is a little more sharp with the hops than Torpedo. In the end, a very good IIPA.

Poured into a beer mug.

Appearance: Pours a beautiful golden color with a one finger bright white head.

Smell: Initially smells like grapefruit/hops. A tart and tangy sort of smell; smells bright and fresh.

Taste: Hoppy upfront making way to a crisp citrus; lime maybe. Gets bitter again before finishing a little sweet with a tinge of alcohol. Nice faint notes of something like lemonade or orange juice throughout.

Mouthfeel: Fairly carbonated, slick, very refreshing.

Overall: Excellent beer. I don't usually go for the IPAs, but this one is quite good. I would absolutely buy a four-pack again and would be interested in trying it from the tap.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip glass. Best by 08/07/13

Pours a beautiful golden color with a moderate white head that just touches the top of the glass. Perfect pour and look. Smell is a mixture of hops and sweet citrus, moderate aroma. Taste is...wow. not what i was expecting. no hop bomb here, we have an amazing mix of hops and malts with a tad of sweet citrus on the front and almost no bitterness at all on the back. exceptional taste. Definitely prefer this one much more than alchemy hour. Medium bodied with medium carbonation and with no alcohol taste whatsoever makes this one quite easy to drink.

Overall I'd put this in world class level. It's extraordinary. My favorite offering from Great Lakes yet, and that brewery just continues to impress me.

Poured the Monster into a Belgian Tulip.

A - The clear dark golden ale produces two fingers of white head.

S - As soon as i poured the beer in the glass I could smell the sweet hops come through. Upon further investigation some grapefruit, pine and malts are noticed. Very nice aroma on this one.

T - Wow, this beast is truly smooth and flavorful. Everything is well balanced too. The grapefruit sweetness, hop bitterness, and finally the malt. Didn't expect this one to be this good.

M - Nice, crisp and refreshing. Smooth mouthfeel, medium carbonation.

O - Starting to believe Great Lakes has it down. Pleasantly surprised! Cheers!

12 oz bottle poured into my snifter. Best by date is five months from now, so hopefully this bottle is less than a month old.

A - really interesting, but not necessarily to my liking. LEM pours very light and settles deep orange, a pretty profound transition. The foam from the forced pour recedes slowly leaving a nice, sticky looking film to cover the top. However, the beer is almost totally opaque from the floating sediment, something which I don't really care to see at all.

S - good, pretty sweet and sticky hops at first followed by an interesting mix of vanilla and sugar that one would normally detect in an English BW. There's something unpleasantly metallic on the end of the nose, but it doesn't bring the quality down too much.

T - wow, really interesting. A floral and sweet hop burst is followed by intense bitterness for less than a second or so. The lasting impression is honey and sugar on the back end, making this beer again more and more like an English BW. However, the bitterness and sweetness are a little intense.

M - nothing too bad here. The carbonation and alcohol create a balanced drinking experience, and the sweetness coats your throat in an interesting way. Again, it drinks more like an English BW, so it's a little chewy and syrupy.

O - LEM is really an interesting drinking experience. I'd like to try some more at some point, but I don't think more than one in a sitting.

Poured into a tulip glass, with a best by date of 7/15/12

A- pours a cloudy and murky dark orangish-brown with a tall white foamy head that reduces to a small layer, leaving thick patches of lace.

S- as imagined, it seems a little matter than it probably was fresh. The malts are sweet and toasty, a bit nutty, and slightly buttery. The hop profile is citrusy, herbal and a bit grassy.

T-malt profile is quite strong, toasted bready leads way to a slightly sweet fruitiness. It later transitions into a hop bite with notes of grapefruit, pineapple and lemon grass. The finish its bitter, but also provides that malty sweetness again, warming alcohol closes out the palate.

M- medium-heavy body, just a trace of carbonation, mouthfeel starts slightly syrupy and finishes creamy and velvety.

O- being last its best by date, this be has turned a little maltier than what it probably started as. It's still very good though, it's heavy body and warming finish make it a sipper for sure.

Poured from a bottle into a snifter glass. 2012 version with a best by date of July 15, 2012.

A: A medium to darker orange color that is a bit murky. Glass lacing is huge and sticky.

S: Lots of citrus smells with floral and herbal notes and a large more candy like sweetness.

T: Lighter citrus is the main hops flavor with pineapple, tangerine and lemon coupled with some floral and herbal flavors. The hops get smoothed out by the substantial candy and sugar sweetness that lasts all the way to the finish. Not bitter on the finish but the alcohol pokes through for a lasting sweeter finish.

M: Full, coating, sweet and some alcohol.

O: A sweeter DIPA for sure that is solid but not something you can drink a few of. Of course the ABV helps limit drinkability, but for me it was the sweetness and finish that really limits it. Good beer, not great.

I am updating my review in September 2012. I had a bottle over the weekend that was just too damn good not to up my score. The nose was off the charts pineapple and just so aromatic with citrus. The flavor followed up with the same. This is still a sweet beer, but I got way more citrus and pineapple in this bottle. Note: Bottle was from the 2012 batch, so it was probably 2 or 3 months old, but still I really enjoyed it. Solid DIPA.

Pours a hazy amber color with a modest white head that recedes in short order. The aroma oozes with the essence of crisp, clean, citric hops. The flavor matches the aroma perfectly. The hop bitterness here is monstrous indeed. Try as I might to tease out some of the other flavors that I presume exist, I just can't get past the astringency of the hops. I should probably note that I'm not a fan of IPA's, so one as fierce as this is facing an uphill battle to win my affection. This is certainly representative of the style, but it's just not for me.

Pours a wonderful honey gold into tulip glass w/a good fingers worth of head. Smells of citrusy hops like grapefruit and hints of sweet malts. Taste and mouthfeel; Wow, very nice, better than expected full, crisp, and grapefruit like right up front. Great balance between the abv heaviness that warms, the sweetness from the malts and the aforementioned grapefruit from the citrusy hops makes this a great sipper from a solid brewer

A- Hazy deep copper color topped with a medium size off white head. Head fades quickly to a ring and leaves some spotty lace on the glass.

S- Citrus hop dominate the nose, hints of pine resin and caramel in there too.

T- Pineapple and citrus note right away, slight malt balances out the hop notes and leads into the finish that is dry and with a lingering final bitter note form the hops.

M- Smooth and creamy, medium in body and in carbonation. Pretty clean for a DIPA little bit of hop oil build up on the palate.

O- Decent beer noting too special, but not one to turn down either, the 9.1% ABV was not noticeable either.

Poured from a 12 oz bottle into a pint glass- pours a remarkably clear golden orange, less than a finger of head, mild retention, beautiful rings of lacing.

Smell is appropriate- pine and citrus hops with a bit of thick, malty sweetness. Definitely could be a bigger blast of hops but certainly pleasing.

Tastes fantastic! I'm proud of my hometown brewery for this one. Juicy citrus and floral hops up front balanced very well by the pale malt. Almost no caramel which is interesting but really highlights the hops. Bitterness comes soon after, and gives way to very citrusy hop flavors. Orange, grapefruit. Excellent.

Mouthfeel is very good for an imperial IPA- medium body with light quasi-prickly carbonation. I love it!

12 oz. bottle with a best by date of 8/15/12 poured into pint glass.

A: Slightly hazy gold/orange color with a one-finger white head. Retention is good. Can see some yeast settlement in the liquid, as well.

S: Heavy citrus smell, especially pineapple and mango.

T: Nice slightly sweet sugar cookie malt base supports a nice strong onslaught of hop flavors. The hops are mostly of the citrus variety (oranges, grapefruit, pineapple, etc.) However, there is a blast of pine at the end. With all the hop flavors present, it isn't too bitter. There's a shot of alcohol and a bit of metallic taste at the end, but bitter hops finish it off.

M: Wow...very creamy. This body is a great medium for channeling the strong hop flavors, and it keeps them around for a LONG time after the drink goes down.

O: GLBC makes some of my favorite beers, and this one is no exception. This is a top-tier IPA, for sure. The taste is surprisingly complex. Most DIPAs just assault the palate with hops, but there's more depth here.

Pour: Hazy orange with 3 fingers off-white head.

Smell: Straight grapefruits and oranges. Yup.

Taste: Completely follows the nose with bitter grapefruits. Some pine, but this is one fruity DIPA, almost too much so. Malts make this a little too sweet which I think promotes the overly fruity aspects.

Mouthfeel: Very, very juicy. Super refreshing, in a wake up and have some orange juice kind of way.

Overall: Good, but too much fruit juice for me.

Very citrusy for a double IPA, without a lot of the spicy hop flavors or heavy malt notes, or accompanying pine often found in this style. I like that as a change of pace- tastes a bit like Sweetwater IPA if that were revved up to 9.1%- lots of grapefruit with a touch of orange, sweet clean malts, and a resinous finish that still comes off as fairly clean, and a short bitterness at the finish. Very nice.

Poured into a pint glass. Reviewed alongside Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA.

A: Very cloudy light orange with one-finger, white, foamy head that lasted a minute or two. Also, tiny particles. Great lacing.

S: Seriously, pineapple was the first thing I noticed. Then orange and subtle hops. I like the smell.

T: Light to moderate sweetness and solid hop bitterness. Fruit and bitter hops are what I taste primarily. Some malt (almost burnt flavor) in the finish.

M: Medium bodied with lively carbonation. Crisp and very warm going down.

O: The thick cloudiness with little particles and the pineapple aroma really stood out to me about this beer. But the head was disappointing compared to the Dogfish Head, and the flavor was a bit too fruity for my taste. The mouthfeel also wasn't as smooth as the Dogfish Head. A) Hazy amber, with a nice 2 finger head. The head settles to a dusting, which is maintained throughout. Excellent lacing.

S) Wonderful tropical fruit aroma, pineapple and mango. There is ripe peach too. Pleasingly sweet with a drop of pine and citrus. Just a hint of alcohol.

T) Pretty malt forward, but enough hop bitterness for adequate balance. Follows the nose pretty closely. Sweet pineapple, fresh oranges, and peach syrup. Finishes with some hop bite and brief alcohol tingle.

M) Close to full bodied, pretty thick and coating. This has moderate carbonation. Drinks pretty smooth. No alcohol burn. Nice...

O) Really enjoyed this, can't believe I hadn't tried it earlier. This ranks right up there with some of my favorites in the style. We all know some beers get pretty hyped, I would argue this one deserves a little more. Glad to recommend.

Smell- In a word: amazing. Like sticking your nose in a bag of hops. Definitely the highlight of this beer.

Taste- Big orange on a wave of bitterness. Good malt backbone and sweetness balance it nicely. On the verge of being too sweet but it never gets there.

Mouthfeel- Typical sticky medium body as most good IIPA
