Poured an good 2 finger head that lasted better than most. It stayed about a 1/4 inch and clung to sides throughout drinking. Very impressive. Nice copper orange color but it looks like a lighter beer, quite transparent. Nice carbonation bubbles too. I would rate it higher if it had a bit denser color.

The smell is ok. Light citrus, hops, floral. Fairly light.

Great balance in taste. Not too complex but very pleasing for me. The citrus comes out and some piney notes. I get orange peel too. I get sweetness up front and the bitters linger coating the mouth. The lingering mouthfeel is a bit distracting but still above average.

Overall this is an outstanding beer that I would love to get again but it does not have any uniqueness that makes it stand out from other great beers. Just well done.

Hazed orange-amber with some quality looking creaminess covering the surface. Aromas start out earthy, leafy, and a little "catty"...it has a similar woody/earthy/herbal-ness I get from several hoppy Great Lakes beers. Joining in is some piney sweetness, slight alcoholic spice, and a touch of mint. Green, bitter pine resin and sweet malt taste. Citrus, fruit, grass, and a little bread. I don't know...this one isn't entirely doing it for me. Mellow by DIPA standards, but also just not my favorite blend of flavors. Bitter, creamy, and full bodied. I might give it another go next year. Right now I'm glad I got just the single bottle.

poured 12oz bottle into teku. Best by date of 7/26/13

A - Pours hazy bright orange with a two finger bright white head that relaxes into a nice ring around the glass. Not sure how this is unfiltered by how clean it looks. Decent lacing on my glass.

S - Plenty of floral hops, citrus, pine, with a little toffee and honey on bread. An ever so slight earthy scent.

T - Hits with sweet ripe pineapple, citrus. Melds into some malt sweetness with the toffee and honey on bread. Finishes with a pine and bitter with more sweetness. Bitter lingers on the tongue.

M - Nice amount of carbonation, medium body, sticky and sweet in the mouth. Bitter dryness at the end.

O - Slightly above average IIPA that I am glad to have tried. Definitely a more soft IIPA compared to the big bold ones that are out there. Balance between bitter and sweet is okay, but the sweetness seems to come through more.

Pours a light amber/orange with a decent head of foam that fell fast to a thin ring and cap and left good lace. Champagne effervescence and great clarity. Nose is sweet, sweet pineapple. Sweet malt, cookie like, caramel and sticky. Some earth and fresh mango. Fresh cut grass. The alcohol shows up on the nose as ti warms. Taste is very pineapple and has a little oil to coat the tongue right away so you don’t think it’s too sweet. Hops are plentiful but somewhat tame except for a good helping of pine. The malt character is sweet, buttery, and creamy with some biscuit. There’s some alcohol to bite and warm a little on the way down. Really the most pineapple in a beer I have ever had. It drinks smooth and refreshing with a full malt profile that is very rich and lasts throughout the drink. It’s almost heavy and just a bit syrupy. The hops stay forward and offer a good bitter on the back palate to bring it to a close with nice dry finish.

Poured into snifter. Crystal-clear orange/gold, with a thick white head from a regular pour that fades quickly into a nice cap of foam that leaves some spotty lacing on the glass. Smells of tropical fruits, pineapple and mango, with a spicy hop twang behind it that slightly burns the nostrils on a deep inhale. Taste is big sweet clean malts, with tropical fruit hop flavors and a lovely bitter finish over the slightly sticky sweet aftertaste left from the malts. Mouthfeel is smooth and full, without being too sticky.

12oz bottle best by 7/26/2013 poured into a Bell's snifter and consumed today, 6/9/2013. Cool label for sure!

Aroma: Not particularly present, mostly an earthy hoppiness combined with some sweet caramel. Not a very impressive nose at all, even as it warms up. (3.5)

Colour: Very nice semi-hazy light amber body with a solid 1cm white head that recedes fairly quickly into a thin white collar. Lacing is there but sporadic. Otherwise a very nice looking beer, just begging to be quaffed. (4.5)

Flavour: Definitely a very bitter, earthy kick up front. The toffee, caramel and honey malt has a very strong presence in the middle, so much that I don't notice any of the early earthy hoppy flavour whatsoever. It finishes with a non-descript sweet bitterness that stings the hell out of my palate. It's definitely intense, but it somehow does not seem to come together in a way that I like. Big DIPA with big malt backbone, but not a great bit of hop flavour at all. (3.5)

Mouthfeel: Definitely not lacking here though. Full bodied, resinous and syrupy DIPA that coats my palate and stings it like a swarm of bees. Great carbonation, dry sweet finish that is mostly a non-descript bitterness mixed in with bitter caramel. (4.5)

Overall: Decent DIPA, not my favorite combination of flavours for sure. It does have the intensity of the malt backbone and bitterness, but I feel like its missing something and that would probably be the lack of intensity of the hop flavours that I come to expect from a double IPA. If they were to amp up the aroma hops, it would probably add a great deal more to this beer. (4)

12-oz bottle, best by 8-9-2013, poured to 13.75-oz tulip. Very clear golden yellow, 1-finger white fluffy head, rising bubbles throughout, lacing maintained.

This beer needs to warm for a few minutes before consuming. Needed to swirl, to bury my nose in order to draw out aroma at first. Aroma stronger as it warms. Very pleasant juicy citrus (orange, pineapple, grapefruit). Very little to no pine, despite Simcoe. Less bold than more esteemed DIPAs.

Uneven? Each sip seems to be different. Sweet canned pineapple, grapefruit, giving way to strong pine and spicy malts, at first. With time, Simcoe pine predominates, but there is pineapple lingering at finish.

Alcohol burn and maltiness more noticeable than more esteemed examples, but it is quite drinkable. Not as bold or hoppy as the "west coast" Alchemy Hour, but a very good beer from a great brewery.

12 oz. bottle, with best by date of 07/26/2013. I drank a lot of this stuff last year and I remember loving it, so I'm excited to try it again. Great Lakes has quickly become one of my favorite breweries.

Poured into a Firestone Walker pint glass.

A - Beautiful two fingers of fluffy creamy off-white head. Body is a bright golden orange with lots of bubbles streaming to the top, and some fine sediment twirling around the glass. Thick fluffy rings of lacing.

S - Fresh bitter grapefruit rind, blood orange, juicy pineapple, creamy apricot, & sweet light bready malt. Wonderful citrus smells coming from this one. The tropical fruits seem to become even more enhanced as this beer warms, also.

T - Taste is brimming with intense spicy hop bitterness. Some alcohol heat is definitely apparent from this beer's strong 9.10% abv. Tropical fruitiness like mango, grapefruit, & blood orange.

M - Feel is of bitter hop resin & some juicy fruit sugars lingering. Bit of alcohol heat sticking around also.

Overall, another outstanding beer from Grate Lakes Brewing Co., and definitely one of my more favored imperial IPA's. Alcohol warmth is noticeable, but this tastes remarkably smooth for such a high abv beer. Another excellent beer from Great Lakes, all of their stuff comes highly recommended. Great bottle art, also. I would be interested to see what a little bit of age would do to one of these bottles to mellow it out a bit.

Poured from a 32 oz growler into a pint glass. i enjoyed this pretty soon after i got it.

A: honey color. 2 fingers of foamy white head. very clear. nice lacing

S: malty. tropical fruits. honey. a hint of piney resins.

T: the tropical fruits really stand out. mango, pineapple, grape. the hops don't really stand out to me. the piney resins stay after the finish. contributes to the funk. the alcohol is remarkably hidden. honey sweetness.

M: has body, but goes down really smooth. very well carbonated.

O: great summer DIPA. i really enjoyed alchemy hour and this is almost as good. this beer is a little funkier than alchemy hour (in a good way). well balanced, less hoppy, crisp and sweet.

Bottle > Pint Glass

A - Pours clear yellow gold, nice two finger head, a wall of lacing.
S - Huge fruit aroma, pineapple, mango, papaya, grape, a hint of pine, and bread malt. It might be an overwhelming amount of fruit but I love it.
T - Bright lush juicy fruits, there's a lot of grape and papaya flavor, and finishes more on the floral side with a nice fresh bread maltiness.
M - For 9.1% this is stupid drinkable, very balanced feel.
O - This took me by surprise, this does not taste anything like I remember from last year. I distinctly remember a lot of pine and pineapple from last year, but there was a lot of alcohol burn and somewhat boozy flavor, this is not the case this year. I also love that it follow alchemy hour in release. Time to buy a case of this stuff.

12oz bottle poured into snifter.

Appearance-pours a light apricot, with a small white head which is gone quickly. Good amount of lacing around glass. 4

Aroma-lots of tropical fruits at play. Pineapple is very prevalent, as is mango. This smells like a tropical fruit salad. Very ripe almost old fruit salad. It's funny, but this smells like you should drink it out of a coconut. 4.25

Taste-weird mix of bitter and sweet. It tastes like it doesn't know which way it wants to go. The bitterness comes thru first, then pineapple sweetness hits hard. I don't think the flavors work to well together. 3.75

Feel-decent mouthfeel, alcohol content is there but mostly hidden. Medium bodied. 4

Overall-not as good as alchemy hour, but not bad either. I would say this is a solid DIPA. GL has been making a lot of good brews for awhile now, but I think could be one they do without, especially if they make more alchemy hour. 4

Best before 7/26/13. Poured into a Sam Adams Perfect Pint. $2.79 for a single bottle.

Appearance: An almost clear amber color with some super fine particles floating around. Three finger head lasts a few minutes before staying at half a finger. Great, fluffy lacing.

Smell: Sweet. Notes of tropical fruit, but primarily earthy sorts of hops. Not much else.

Taste/feel: Very sweet, especially the more that it warms up. Maybe a sweeter than Hopslam sort of sweet. What blows my mind most about this beer is that it actually doesn't have a lot of flavor, and it's confusing the hell out of me. I even blew my nose and tasted some other things to make sure my taste buds were working. I get the HUGE amount of sweetness on my tongue at the beginning of each sip and the slight bitterness at the end, but not many actual flavors, which is kind of cheesing me off. I really just taste a sort of honey at the beginning with a dash of piney hops, and then a bitter but malty tasting finish. Quite drinkable, but surprisingly little going on in the flavor department for me. Shocking.

Mind boggling. How am I drinking a IIPA where I'm hardly picking up any significant aromas or flavors? It's not like the glass or beer was nearly frozen, either. It looks good, it smells pretty nice, but the flavors really seem to be in hiding until the beer warms up quite a lot. It's far from bad, but if I wanted to drink a IIPA, I'd drink something that gives me more flavor.. I feel like after awhile, this would taste like drinking corn syrup. On the plus side, it IS insanely drinkable for the first 12oz at least, and the 9.1% isn't noticeable. Once the beer is sitting at room temperature for awhile, there's a SLIGHT throat warming on the finish, but that's it. I'd definitely drink this again, but I must admit, I'm underwhelmed.

12 oz bottle courtesy of tommyguz pours a surprisingly clear gold color with a fluffy white head. Nice retention and lacing...a good looking brew.

Interesting aroma on this DIPA...pine needle juice galore with a hefty dose of alcohol. Not bad, but not as mouth-watering as I was expecting with GL's pedigree.

Taste is lighter than expected with the malts being super-light and the hops never really flexing bitterness or huge flavors. It is pretty easy to drink though and goes down smooth. The body is great with tiny-bubbled carbonation and a silky mouthfeel. Like a good DIPA, it gets better as it warms. Its good, glad I got to try it.

Poured into a snifter from a bottle.

A: This beer appears a nice deep orange, slightly cloudy as well. The head is an off white and started out as approximately a finger's width. The head disappates fairly quickly and a nice lacing remains.

S: The smell is very hoppy upfront. Definitely fits the DIPA smell profile. The hops seem very cirtusy, not too much pine happening.

T: Very bitter around the tongue and quite hoppy! The hoppiness lingers around the middle to back of the tongue after each sip. Definitely quite the tasty DIPA.

M: The mouthfeel with this one is solid, not the smoothest mouthfeel, however. The bitterness from the hops nip at the tongue slightly when sipping.

Overal, this beer is very good! Very hoppy and true to the DIPA style. I'd highly recommend this beer to anyone who's a fan of DIPAs.

Sweet and spicy light barleywine in DIPA clothing.
___

A: Very clear amber body with a somewhat persistent one finger tight off white head.

S: Very inviting... bright, effervescent, light citrus, fruity, and spicy hops with a subtle pillow of toasty caramel malt underneat... just a beautiful, delicate, fine aroma.

T: Wow... incredibly sweet... malts are toasty and nutty as opposed to the usual caramel, though butter is definitely there. Not at all a DIPA experience. Large amounts of spices come through, and the hops form the edges of the flavor rather than being tasted blatantly. Hop bitterness comes though on the finish.

M: Light and airy like fine whipped cream.

Gorgeous copper to lighter yellow orange coloring the head was thick and laced lightly.

The scent tg was weaker than other by Great Lakes but was fruity. Caught glimpses of floral hops manifesting itself in an earthy, kitty litter, type of way.

The taste was more fruity than floral with big grapefruit and tangerines. A little mango and some grassiness, the tastes pull more towards the direction that I personally like. This tastes and feels light, refreshing and at 9 percent ABV, it can be quite deceiving.

Pours a brilliant medium golden with a frothy one inch cream head that dissipates slowly, leaving sheets of lacing.

Fresh cut grass, resin, and citrus form the initial aroma, with plasticy notes surfacing to detract from the experience. There's a solid, toasted, bready malt presence.

Flavor is more fruit-dominant, with underpinnings of mango lime zest complementing a fairly sweet malt backbone. Resin is present throughout, becoming slightly bitter at the finish. Grassiness surfaces in the aftertaste.

Body is creamy and a bit on the full side, with moderate carbonation and significant alcohol warmth.

Fairly resiny brew, a touch sweet, and a bit hot. Another solid offering by Great Lakes. Nothing spectacular, but a good dipa.

12 oz. bottle purchased in the greater Washington D.C. area, 2013 vintage but unclear bottling date (best by 8/11/13 stamped on the side), poured into a DFH quasi-IPA glass, drank over ~30 minutes.

A: 4.75 - straw golden-yellow coloration, impressive clarity (can both see or read through), minimal white head dissipates into subtle glass lacing with no detectable hop haze/residuals, medium alcohol legs; very similar appearing beer to Founders' Double Trouble

S: 4 - and her it diverts from Double Trouble...picking up lots of malt characters in the aroma --> biscuit, caramel, toffee with very little hop aroma; some alcohol aromas in the background become more prominent as the beer warms

T: 4.25 - on the front of the tongue, there is a bitter presence but not overwhelming so and this is the majority of what I get from the hops); after that, the malt qualities predominate on the back of the tongue - again, caramel, toffee, sweet fruit (like a tangerine with sugar on it); some lingering alcohol notes and malts coat the tongue

M: 4.5 - full-bodied, 9.1% is present but not overwhelming so; moderate-to-large carbonation and alcohol legs

O: 4.25 - I have never had this beer before as Great Lakes does not distribute to CT and was looking forward to it; overall, it tastes to me like the quintessential "Third Coast" IPA with malt>hop presence; I have heard and read that this beer has a "huge hop presence," but, compared to some West Coast hop bombs, I find this humorous; the malt presence, however, is distinct and very pleasant; if you're looking for a change from aggressively hopped and/or less bitter/more tropical tasting DIPAs, I would give this one a shot; however, I prefer the former so much that I'll unlikely be coming back to this one this year after this four-pack

What a cool bottle! Perhaps some of my favorite artwork seen lately.

Glass: Port City "Belgian Style" Globe / Snifter.

Appearance: A mild but straight-down pour produced about a half a finger of off-white head that lingered for a minute or two until settling down a somewhat thick ring of foam around the edge of the glass. The color is a beautiful golden-orange, and it is completely clear.

Smell: Hmm, my first thought is that I'm excited to taste this one! A very delicious sweet mango scent is at the front, with perhaps a bit of citrus, and a definite pine backbone.

Taste: So subtle and sweet, this is a hop bomb that has been tamed to a level that is less bitter than some. Easily drinkable, there is a definite pine as well as some sweet citrus notes. Malt comes through in the mid-palette.

Mouthfeel: About perfect for me, personally. A medium to light body with medium carbonation. This beer is refreshing and drinkable at the same time. The finish is slightly dry with a tiny bit of that characteristic hop oil presence.

Overall: A solid DIPA that I would seek out and drink more of. Well done, Great Lakes!

Pours a transparent amber with a small white head.

The smell is citrus hops and sweet and malty.

Taste is sweet and malty upfront with the fruity hops coming in and the end. There is a hoppy bitterness at the end which really hangs around. There is also a smooth buttery, creaminess and biscuit flavour.

The mouthfeel is slick, sticky and syrupy. The carbonation is medium bodied.

Overall a very sweet and not overly bitter, reminds me of 90 minute. Hides its abv very well. I really like this but it is too sweet to have a lot.

12 ounce bottle into tulip glass, best before 7/26/2013. Pours lightly hazy golden amber color with a 1-2 finger dense white head with great retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Nice soapy lacing clings on the glass. Aromas of big mango, pineapple, grapefruit, orange zest, lemon zest, pine, floral, grass, honey, and floral earthiness. Fantastic aromas with great hop complexity and moderate malt balance. Taste of big mango, pineapple, pine, grapefruit, lemon zest, orange zest, floral, grass, honey, bread, and floral earthiness. Moderate pine bitterness on the finish; with lingering notes of tropical fruit, citrus, pine resin, floral, grass, honey, bread, and hop earthiness on the finish for a while. Damn nice complexity and balance of hop flavors; with a moderate malt balance that doesn’t overshadow the hops, and zero cloying flavors lingering after the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full bodied; with a moderately creamy and sticky mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is very well hidden with only a small warming noticed after the finish. Overall this is a highly excellent DIPA! Big hop flavor complexity with moderate malt balance; and dangerously smooth to sip on. A highly enjoyable offering.
