A: Nice bottle design, brown tinged. Poured into pint glass had light amber color and small head.

S: Fruitiness and hops.

T: Citrus, pine, hops.

M: Light to medium carbonation, serves the flavor well. Taste doesn't linger in my mouth too long.

O: I like this beer, I need to start reviewing beers I don't love. It doesn't hurt that I grew up literally across the street from the brewery in Cleveland.

Poured from a 12 oz. bottle into a goblet.

A: Clear, medium golden color with one finger of white foam head. Heavy lacing remains on the glass.

S: Mostly floral hops, delicate like orange blossoms. Malt, Munich-like, and appropriate mixed fruit dance in the background.

T: Begins almost dry, with refined bready malt and floral hop aromatics that match the smell well. Acidity is bright and moderately intense into the brief middle where ale yeast esters and honey are suggested. The finish retains a bready thread, and is mildly bitter.

M: Thin to medium viscosity, balanced on the palate, with moderate carbonation.

D/O: This classic IPA shows some elegant qualities indicative of fine attention to detail on the part of the brewer. Like some other aging recipes such as Bridgeport IPA or Stone IPA, this one is still able to bring it, perhaps in its ability to appeal to one's sense of nostalgia.

12oz bottle poured into a tulip. Freshest by 01/08/13.

A: Pours a clear light golden with a dense 2 finger white head. Average carbonation in the body. Leaves just a little lacing.

S: A pleasant fruity hop aroma with a hint of pine. Malt is mild and in the background, focus is really on the hop, which is good.

T: Pretty well balanced brew for not having much malt flavor. As with the aroma there is a grapefuity and piney bittering to it. Lingers nicely and not to be inappropriate but some tasty burps.

M: Medium bodied with decent carbonation. A little sticky from the hops.

Overall certainly a great IPA, would love for this to be in the mix pack. Any hophead should give it a go.

Don't know how this bottle got in my fridge but here goes

A- Pours a light orange wih a dcecent head. Exactly how I want my Ipas to look

S- Lots of malts here. Very clear its an "English" IPA. Some piney hops in the back but mostly all malt

T- Hoppier than the taste which is a plus but still a good deal of malts. Some pineyness and pale malts Not bad but not something I'd go out of my way to get.

M- Nice carbonation. This part is well done

O- Meh. Not bad but there are way better beers available to me in Chicago IMO

what a beer! this is the best work of great lakes i think. the pour is orange and clear, caramely and lucrative, lacey white head. dank nose, lots of fruity hops and some odd dried fruit aroma as well, maybe cherries or something more exotic, some english malt in there somewhere too, but this is a hop bomb, bordering on a fresh hop brew with high alpha and resin content. the flavor is consistent with the smell, where is all this fruit coming from, and how the hell is this beer pushing 8% abv? its so delicate and nuances it cant be that strong can it? almost acidicly bitter in the finish, but there again is that semisweet dries fruit complex that keeps lingering. enough carbonation and only a medium body i could drink this until the saturation point without much trouble. i think easliy the best great lakes offering ive had the pleasure of tipping back. a real treat, and something different finally in the american ipa world.

No head really on a cloudy amber orange body. Aroma of nondescript citrus and earthy hops with toasted malts. This one is really piney and grassy and some very tart orange. It takes some time to get used to. Also has a toasted malt base. Floral notes as well. Moderate to high carbonation and medium body. I like this beer it's just hard to drink for the first few sips. The pine is resilient though and you never get completely used to it. I also feel its a little over carbonated.

Pours copper with a small off white head. Aroma is wonderful, sweet and fruity (tangerines, grapefruit and melon). Nice flavor to match, starts out sweet with some malts and the fruit, followed by a nice hoppy bitterness at the finish. Great balance of flavors, and it has a nice tart yet subtly sweet aftertaste. Leaves a nice lacing after every drink. Excellent, unique take on an IPA.

Pours a golden amber with a small white head.

The smell is earthy hops, raisins and plums, very nice.

The taste is malty with earthy hops.

The mouthfeel is medium bodied with medium carbonation.

Overall a very nice English ipa which hides its abv very well.

12 oz. bottle poured into a nonic pint glass

Pours a clear amber with honey gold highlights. The two finger cream color head has great retention and leaves behind a good amount of sticky, splotchy lacing. Grassy, herbal, and a hint of citrus blossoms on the notes. Opens with mild bitterness, bready with toasty caramel accents embedded in the very noticeable malt bill that slowly gives way to a dry, crisp finish dominated by grapefruit rind bitterness and hints of alcohol. Medium bodied, smooth, and well-carbonated. Very enjoyable and extremely well balanced. As a fan of English IPA's, although this tends to be a bit more bitter than most, this is one of the better examples readily available in my area.

crystal clear straw colored body with two fingers worth of white creamy head and ample lacing. smells of sweet malts, a little herbal like mint and lemon verbena. taste is pretty simple, nothing complicated or too overpowering. just a nicely blended ipa with enough malt backbone to balance the hops. mouthfeel has good carbonation but the body seems a little watery for me. not overly bitter or dry on the finish. overall i like it and it's easy drinkin, but just don't know if this will be a staple in the fridge.

12 oz bottle poured into a Duvel tulip.

A: Pours a orange/amber color that shifts to more of a copper shade when held near the light. At first glance, it seems like its filtered, but the specks of yeast help to break up the clarity. The head is a two finger white color featuring decent retention.

S: Has a fair amount of citrus and pine, but also some bright fruity esters that catch me offguard. It manages to be both malty and hoppy at the same time, evoking hints of complexity.

T: The flavor profile is even English-inspired than I anticipated from the aroma. There's a LOT of toffee to start out, and right before the dry, piny finish appears, brigher fruit esters try to pop up briefly, and comes on more strongly after several sips. The hops give off a slight tobacco flavor at times. It also features a bit of complexity to it which I enjoy. Definitely a solid IPA, if not a stellar one.

M: The texture and finish is a little syrupy, but it thankfully avoids being excessively sweet. Carbonation is about medium to medium high for the style. It's more of a slow sipper than a chugger due to the weight of the body and faint hint of alcohol.

O: I'd say the draught version was a little more enjoyable, due to how citrusy it was, but I enjoy this one's complexity. This is still a great choice for someone who wants an IPA to be more than a straightforward hop bomb.

I really wish Great Lakes came to Maryland, but alas...

I bought a 6-pack of this stuff on a whim tonight and I'm currently on my 3rd. I hope the review isn't too shaky

Stamped 12/11/12.

Presently, this is the #6 ranked English IPA in the world. Rock on!

Served in a Delirium Tremens shaped-glass.

A: Poured a crystal clear, two shades darker than gold color, with a whopping 2 finger head that clung to the glass and them some.

S: Sort of a fruit yeast mixture, with both playing a fine-tunes duet. Man, I'd love to bake some bread with this stuff!

T: VERY fruit forward in sort of an "Alpha King" kinda way, with some grapefruit staining the teeth on the back end. The yeast was fresh and inviting.

M: Not too bitter, but much more bitter than the Brits ever envisioned. The lacing was ridiculous and the brew itself was perfectly balance... except for the fact that it's not.

O: I can't believe it's taken me so long to get around and try this brew. Absolutely outstanding!

Poured into a glass mug.

A: Golden yellow with two-finger, foamy white head that lasted a couple of minutes. Okay lacing.

S: Strong citrus hop aroma. Not much toast or malt.

T: Light sweetness and moderate bitterness. Citrus hops and a bit more toasty than the nose suggested.

M: Medium bodied with fizzy carbonation. Smooth.

O: At first, I was expecting something more like an English Pale ale, but this is definitely an English IPA. A solid beer.

A: Dark golden brew with a 1/2 finger of white head that has moderate retention and leaves a fair amount of lacing.

S: A moderate amount of malts is there, and is necessary to stand up to the heavy hit of bright, citrusy hops.

T: Big sweet malts start of the brew and bring a slightly grainy, toasty flavor. They give way to the hops, which bring a welcome bitterness and a slightly piney flavor. the finish is dry and pleasantly bitter. The alcohol is amazingly well hidden for 7.5%

M: Moderate body, a decent amount of carbonation. It is slightly oily.

O: there is honestly nothing that stands out about this beer in terms of flavor, other than the fact that it is a remarkably well balanced IPA. The taste is an excellent blend of malts and hops, and I'm not one to complain about 7.5% ABV. Definitely a solid delivery.

Nice rich pine and citrus aromas!

Awesome copper color, with full head!

Not too full of hop flavors.grapefruit and other citrus flavors. Good amount of carbonation, but not Overpowering.

I'd compare it in style to that of Centenial IPA.

Overall a great English Style IPA!

12oz. bottle poured into a curved pint glass

A- Clarity is impressive. Off-white head, of two figer dissipates a little, but sticks around a good bit, and laces nicely.

S- a very deep caramel/toasted biscuit/sweet malt smell. There's jut a touch of citric hops, grapefruit in nature.

T- Big malt bill. Sweet caramel notes, with a toasted biscuity as well which clearly defines its British IPA-ness rather than AIPA. The hops area also more British IPA in nature, but tend towards an AIPA grapefruit/citrus origin rather than the earthy hops of, say, Bellhaven Twisted Thistle. Hops hit with bitterness on the backend moreso than flavor.

M- A really nice, slick, thick-ish medium body. Carbonation is solidly medium, and the clarity of the brew puts the carbonation on show.

O- A very nice IPA that breaks the boundries of West/East Coast or straight up English IPA. Me likey.

Served on tap in a 10 oz chalice glass

Appearance – Served a lightly hazed golden amber color with a one finger white head. The head had a decent level of retention but eventually fades to give a good level of lacing.

Smell – The aroma is a nice blend of fruit and hop. The fruit is a mix of tropical aromas of pineapple and mango with hints of tangerine while the hop aromas is dominated largely by a grapefruit smell. While grapefruit is the strongest hop smell there is also a lighter earthy and floral note aroma as well. While the aroma is rather light overall for an IPA it is quite pleasant.

Taste – The taste begins with a breadiness mixed with some of the tropical fruit and some grapefruit hop flavors. While sweeter in the beginning, the hops start to win out over the tropical fruit sweetness and the beer begins to bitter ever so slightly. Hop flavors of an earthy nature join the grapefruit which, in the end, leaves a nice balanced hop flavor to linger on the tongue.

Mouthfeel – The body of the beer is just above average in creaminess. The carbonation level is quite average. The creamy body is nice for the malty and the hop flavors and makes it quite smooth on the tongue.

Overall – A wonderfully tasty IPA. Very smooth flavor transitions and a great flavor profile. One to go to again and again.

At long last, I finally get to try something from Great Lakes Brewing Company!. Poured from a bottle into a pint glass. Pours the brightest copper I have ever seen with a two and a half finger white head. Leaves a great amount of lacing. Smells of exceptional hops along with distant pine, oranges and grapefruit. Pineapple also comes through if inhaled hard enough. Basically smells like a very sweet fruit basket. The taste is predominantly pine, with a decent amount of banana coming through. Slight orange, some odd wheat, and also some odd soapyness come through as well. The motuhfeel is of strong pine with a bit of lemon zest and ever so slight orange with a moderate amount of wheat. Overall, this is a great IPA with lots of flavor, although the odd soapyness kind of ruins the whole deal for me. Would I buy it again? Yes, although it cannot hold a candle to mad hatter.

Thanks to JLindros to sharing this beer.

A - Poured into a tulip a nice one finger head atop a clear, very prominently golden pour.

S - Smell is where this really falls for me. Far too sweet and malty for an IPA for my liking.

T - Taste is nice with a fair amount of honey sweetness and light hops. Very tasty.

M - Mouthfeel is nice and creamy with a very good carbonation that one comes to love with Great Lakes.

O - Overall this wasnt a bad English IPA. Always like trying beers from Great Lakes Brewing Company.

Appearance: dark yellowish/orange brew with a light haze and a good frothy head (around 1.5" in pint glass)

Smell: Some earthy undertones, tempered by the light presence of hops. Very light on the nose. A more mild smell then other IPAs coming in at the 7.5% ABV.

Taste: Very mild, but an incredibly satisfying balanced taste. Hops are present in their full spectrum, but balanced out by a fair amount, but not overwhelming, presence of malt.

Mouthfeel: Medium body with a good level of carbonation and a good creaminess. Think Velvet palate.

Overall: A very satisfying beer with a very effective balance of hops and malt. A repeat buy without a doubt.

The commodore has been one of my friends since before it was widely available year round. It's a full bodied hoppy (but well balanced)
double IPA with a great in glass experience.

On tap, the commodore is even better. The head seems creamier and lasts forever in it's fine lacey perfection. One of the outdoor festivals I attend each year has had this (along with a number of other goodies) on their beer trucks. I'll keep coming back for the music and the quality draft beer. This is one to get if you can.

Quite the strange yet interesting beer.

A - Soft orange, white head which quickly recedes.

S - Strange 'sweet corn' aroma. Malt and hops come after that.

T - a blast of corn juice hits first, and then a decent variety of bitter, floral, and citrus hops. There is some malt hidden in there as well - maybe it's the source of these cornmeal type flavors - but the corn notes dominate this beer which is kind of offputting.

M - Good carbonation levels, and alcohol is well-hidden.

O - Not very well-balanced as the taste gets overrun with this weird corn-like quality. I am not sure where these notes are coming from. The hops are there but it is also sweet so it would be a stretch to call it an IPA. I would much rather have their Lake Erie Monster DIPA - it is a more bold yet traditional beer. This is not the delicious experience I have come to expect from Great Lakes Brewing. It may be an issue of freshness, but on the bottle it says to enjoy by 8/14/2012.

Poured into a nonic.

Pours a hazy gold orange, fluffy white head with tons of tiny bubbles. Nice action here as well, lots of bubbles rising. Lace island remains with some patchy lacing.

Brew smells of floral and barley. Biscuit malts along with a slick hop. Good nose.

Brew is full bodied; creamy and full of flavors. Sweet floral and citrus hops, spicy at times and even a hint of caramel malts. Very medium bodied here great session brew. Finishes with mild bitterness. Very good stuff here.

Would never known it was 7.5% abv. A great drinking and tasting english style IPA here. Very good stuff. Another winner from Great Lakes.

Served on tap in a pint glass

A- This beer is a slightly hazy golden orange with a slight off white head that lasts all the way down. The aroma is all hops, a lot of citrus and astringency. The taste is bitter and all about the hops. There is a ton of citrus, skunkyness, and astringent notes. The malts don't really come through in flavor but do come in nicely to the feel part of the beer. The feel of this beer is there and is quite bitter, a drinkable beer for its size. A pretty decent IPA, this is a little brother to the lake Erie monster.
