ABC Extra Stout pours with an average-sized light brown head that, despite some nice lace, mostly diminished over the duration of the drink. I found the sweet aroma to be somewhat heavy and reminiscent of molasses and roasted nuts.The flavour wasn't unnecessarily complicated and both the initial sip and the aftertaste were heavy and quite bitter; the duration of the finish was long. Full on the palate, ABC Extra Stout was lively carbonated and, despite a creamy texture, was slightly marred by a chalky finish. I don't think I would drink this stout with food but it isn't too shabby and I would like to try it again.

You can really taste the 8% alcohol in this one!

Can from a supermarket in Singapore. From notes.

A - Poured near black with some light coming through the bottom. Fluffy two finger light brown head. Very nice lace all around the glass and a half finger of retention.

S - Cola, some chocolate, a little roast. Warmed up with some good chocolate, but not a whole lot going on.

T - Quite sweet. Cola, some roast, sweet dark malt, again more chocolate as it warms.

M - Mild dusty bitterness. Lot's of sweetness and a tad cloy. Mild carbonation, full body.

O/D - Can't really fault this. It didn't wow, but it held its own and was a good alternative to all the lagers around.

Best by date of May 2013 on this piece of tin. (Well, aluminum.)

This pours a thick cola black in color with a rich malty cocoa-colored foam topping. There’s a sweet malty aroma with some roasty undertones. The flavor is richly sweet and malty, with some roast and a cocoa-coffee note rounding it out. Finishes sweet and strong. Full bodied, thick, and since this was my first beer after traveling almost two weeks through a dry country I savored every sip.

Pours black with a light brown head. Aroma of roasted malt, liquorice, some dark chocolate and hints of coffee. Well balanced with the alcohol well integrated. Drink with spicy food. Sweeter than is typical for the style. Smooth and quite delicious. Very nice stout I had passing thru at the airport in Bangkok!

I got this several times while I was in Burma, and I thought it was super delicious. Nice robust and creamy flavor, a welcome dose of rich flavor after all the pilsners and lagers that are the stock and trade of the Asian beer market. It's good for you!

I had this nice stout while eating local food at Maxwell's Food Court in Singapore. It came in a tall dark bottle, poured into a frosted mug. The color was a beautiful dark brown, but the scent turned me off a bit -- a little too roasted even for a stout to the point that it smelt burnt. However, once I tasted it, I found that the flavors were complex and delicate for a stout, and it made the drinking a joy. Often, stouts can be overpowering and relentless with the nutty thickness of the brew. However, I found that this particular stout has a nice punch with the alcohol level as well as a refreshing finish that made me think back on it on many occasions.

Pours a solid black color with a decent tan head that slowly recedes with minimal lace left in its wake. Smells mostly of caramel and brown sugar with hints of lactic burnt grains ala Guinness. Lightly fruity, slightly melanoid, and acridic coffee with little to no hop aroma or flavor. Medium body with a spirited level of carbonation with a slick bubbly mouthfeel. This is surprisingly not a bad brew. I have had worse Export stouts before and if I ever find myself needing a dark beer in Singapore I may give this another go.

I had the canned version in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, described on can as: Archipelago Brewery Company ABC Stout, Brewed and Canned by Cambodia Brewery Limited under license from Asia Pacific Brewers.


A - mahogany black

S - espresso, possibly some sour notes

T - espresso w/ a very bitter finish. Generally expect at least some sweetness w/ an 8% alcohol content but this went across the palate like thin bitter espresso leaving a sour, coffee grind aftertaste hanging around like a tired relative

M/F - thin for the style & flavor profile, mild carbonation.

O - Unimpressive, especially for the style, didn't even finish the last swallow. It appears this version was contract brewed, doubt this is the intended result

A - Pours an opaque dark brown back with a thick, bubbly tan head and fairly good retention finally settling down to a coffee like head (3.5)

S - Pleasant albeit slightly weak nose of coffee and roasted malts with a hint of sweetness (3.5)

T - Roasted malts with a dab of sweetness upfront, revealing notes of coffee and perhaps a very light dash of dark fruits in the middle before a slightly sour, mildly bitter and pleasantly raisiny finish (3.5)

M - Body was between light and medium with a slightly high amount of carbonation and goes down watery-foamy smooth; prefer a feel that's a tad thicker and more milky or creamy for this style (3.5)

D - Pretty good and drinkable stout. I may actually be able to imagine myself sessioning this more than the Guinness Foreign Extra stout; definitely exceeded my expectations (4)

Not bad at all! For a stout that's so common and easily available in Singapore along with the Guinness Foreign Extra Stout; hugely popular with the older population amongst our heartlanders who will be frequently spotted with a bomber and a pack of fags at the "coffee shops" in the after hours.

Brewed by Cambodia Brewery under licence.

The colour is pitch-dark, the low compact head is brown; it sinks slowly leaving some lacing.

The smell is sweet with notes of dried fruits (apricots, apples, raisins...), marzipan, cocoa, some alcohol, a sour hint and some very mild bitter flavours.

The taste is very creamy and sweet with distinct notes of fresh apples and other fruits. There are some notes of roasted malt and marzipan, but also chemical hints of crayons. Some very mild bitter flavours give some balance. The aftertaste is very sweet and extremely fruity: Apple juice, kiwi, pineapples, pears, plums... The finish brings some hints of cocoa and coconut.

The carbonation is mild, the bubbles are very small. The liquid is smooth.

Probably one of the fruitiest non-fruit beers I have had. A real treat.

this beer is great when in asia i had almost always chosen this beer. there is not easily a wide selection of great beers here and this beer was fine in a pinch. its similar to golden drak or any other heavy dark belgian beer. its strong at 8 percent and widely available. i had abc in singapore and in cambodia. this beer didnt wow me cept for its strength which after two cans left my head spinning a bit.

Not a bad beer, and certainly one of your better options in Southeast Asia. Supposedly brewed by the "Archipelago Brewing Company", for Cambodia Brewery LTD, by Asia Pacific Breweries. Yeesh. Appearance is a deep brown with a small tan head that stays around for awhile. Nose is sweet chocolate malts and sweet alcohol. Taste is roasty malts, some ash, sugarcane, and well-hidden alcohol. Mouthfeel is decent, maybe a bit thin for a stout but not bad. Drinkability is ok if you watch out for the 8%.

This version I tried was brewed and canned in Myanmar under license by "Myanmar Brewing Co." Maroon can with a lion motif. Has won awards all over Europe if you believe the can. 8% ABV, no freshness date.

Tried at a small Italian restaurant in Nyaung-U, Bagan, Myanmar.

Pours a very deep black, with a coarse-bubbled espresso crema head. Reasonable lacing.

Nose is reasonable for a stout. Lots of coffee, hint of roasted sourness. Ends up feeling a little weak however - no doubt because it's served ice cold to counteract the cloying heat here.

Extremely ashy strong palate. Very stout indeed. Crisped blackened malt, with a hint indeed of maraschino lingering around the back. Palate stays dry and powdery for a long time. Ends up feeling almost puckieringly sour.

Actually pretty robust and impressive, especially once it's warmed.

While Myanmar should be on of those places where no one should ever have thought to brew a stout (and in fact, brews exclusively a pale swill to chug down a parched, dry throat), I was impressed to find this.

A - Rich small off white head, snotty lacing and jet black body.
S - Sweet pineapples??? Booziness.
T - I was it by a shock of bitterness on the first sip. Perhaps because I wasnt expecting it after that light weight aroma. Afterwards, sea salt (ie does not taste as if someone dumped table salt into my beer), tons of charcol and bit of sweetness.
M - Smooth. Can conditioned???

Oh yeah, a nice 640ml bottle from a buddy that went over to Singapore. (He also brought a Tiger beer – which was almost crap). THIS, though, was pretty darn good. Excellent coal black pour that kept producing a massive foamy tan head. Malty chocolate in the nose.

The quaffs: almost like an Irish dry stout; gritty, lite in the malty start, would finish hoppy. Pleasant hints of burnt toast and even a little anise. Nice lingering aftertaste. Full bodied and bold – I could tell it packed some alcohol, and I see it was 8%.

Nicely drinkable in the fall/winter – otherwise the alcohol was a tad too prevalent.

From can. Stumbled upon this in the Silver Kris lounge at Changi Airport (Singapore). Was a little surpised to see a Stout to start with, even more surprised to discover it was 8% ABV. Poured jet black with a good dense and creamy tan head that for me lasted pretty will and left a heap of lacing. Aroma was mainly molassis and roasted malt with a hint of alcohol. Taste is per the smell with notes of coffee and a fairly alcoholic finish. Feels nice and creamy while the carbonation holds up, but gets a little watery towards the end. Not bad considering it is not "widgetised".

All in all a pleasant surprise.

Happy Herb Pizza, Phnom Penh, Cambodia

Nice medium brown head. Large bubbles, so it did disappear rather quickly. Some lace.
Dark brown or black liquid, with some red tones and good clarity if you put it up to the light.
Malty with faint hops smell. Slight molasses in the smell.
Good body and texture. Kind of creamy.
Malty but little bitterness. Prominent chocolate malt and other roasted characteristics in the taste. The roasted also carries into the finish and aftertaste. Slight banana taste (diacetyl) component. Although the high alcohol doesn’t appear in the nose, it’s fairly obvious in the finish. Not counting brewpubs, this was the best product I had in SE Asia.

Surprisingly good stout, big on flavour, lots of roasty coffee, chocolate and coffee. Sweetsih however, and who the hell knows how they they drink this in singapore (bloody stinking hot there), i will have to resample again, however, this rating is based on my notes, and i feel my feelings would have changed towards it, given that i had it about a year ago, and i feel my tastes have changed.
