Mouth rather sweet, not really sweet but more embedded, the nose is almost nonexistent and a lack of oxidation rather important. During the tasting, it feels like the spice in the standards of the belgian pale ale but it is far too limited and that, to meet the other qualities of beer. Moreover, it lacks too much relief. After a few minutes, it loses too much too fast and becomes flat in taste.

330ml bottle poured into a tulip glass.
Pours a hazy light straw colour with chunks of yeast floating in it. Low carbonation in the pour, and there is about a finger of white head that recedes quickly to a slight lace. Very few bubbles evident in the glass. Aroma is quite lovely, with a hint of sour green apple, some buttery caramel notes and some grassiness. Subtle but delicious.
Taste is similar to the aroma, but with a big hit of candi sugar off the top, followed by a rich, nutty, mellow toffee-like note. Slightly herbal background note with the apple/pear fruity sweetness backing it up. this might just be tipped on the side of sweet for my liking, but it is flavourful. Mouthfeel is medium-heavy with just enough carbonation to zip the flavours across the tongue. This is a sessionable beer, but as I said, possibly a little too sweet for my liking. A decent belgian blonde, albeit a little generic.

A - Honey like color and look aspect.
S - Mainly wheat and fruity
T - The wheat quickly clears up revealing a sweet and fruity taste This beer contains sugar, and you can notice it.
M - It leaves a somewhat 'citric' aftertaste
D - Very easy to drink, even though you can sense - just a little- the alcohol.

Rather Deceptive Marketing...
The bottle boasts "Established in Anno 698." Now apparently that was the year that the original Abbey of Malonne was established by St. Berthuin, an Anglo-Saxon Monk. This beer, however, has little to nothing to do with Malonne. Its brewed under license by SPRL who appears to have an office in Malonne and thats about it. This Biere Belge, Abbaye dMalonne Abdijbier brand was first brewed in 1998. So the established in 698 is only a 1,300 year lie.
As for the beer itself, I am a pleasantly surprised. The beer properly balances a subtle sweetness with a light bitterness. A very subtle sour-lemon flavor finishes the brew. It pours an ultra light yellow with a very thin but sparkly white head. The aroma is of light Belgian yeasts, lemon, and grass. The taste matches. This is nothing to write home about but its certainly a nice session beer at a good price.
