Notes:
A complex, heavily hopped, unfiltered German wheat bock aged in oak barrels once used to age Pinot Noir and Gin. Barrel aging transforms this brew into a glorious, vinous, wild ale. Bright, effervescent, sweet and sour with big funky wild yeast notes. Challenging, but rewarding.

On-tap at WLV, Zwanze 2012.
A: Golden with nice white head.
S: Heavy gamey horseblanket, light tart stone fruit, pineapple. The brett really took over the aroma, which I sort of like. Intensely funky.
T: Lots of brett, mild lemony tartness, citrus, floral notes (gin?), drying tannins. The dryness from the oak pulls on your tongue in a good way.
M: Light with pricky carbonation.
O: I enjoyed this far more than the regular Hopfen-Weisse, which was too sweet. A good example of brett conditioning done well.

On-tap at Local Option. Served in a tulip.
A - White foam settles to a thick cap, leaving spots of lace behind. Lightly hazed golden body.
S - The aroma is kind of crazy, but in a good way. Funky and slightly dirty, but with grassy hops and tropical brett notes. Oak and white wine are fairly present, but gin botanicals, particularly juniper berries, only grow in intensity as the beer warms up. Not really much of the base beer left as far as I can tell.
T - The taste is evocative of a gin and tonic, with it's combination of lemon tartness and gin botanicals. The base beer supplies a bit of bubblegum and banana in the periphery, and the finish has funky and medicinal brett notes that are strangely well-integrated into the flavor profile.
M - Super dry, with moderate acidity that builds over the course of the glass. Light warming alcohol, medium in body, and pleasantly carbonated.
D - Surprisingly good and strangely refreshing for 8.2%. I'll have to check out more of these Zymatore offerings as this worked exceedingly well. The barrel-aging and wild yeast totally transforms the base beer and the flavor combination is unique but avoids becoming incoherent. Hope this is still on next time I swing by the LO.

Served in a Gouden Carolus goblet at Local Option.
So...a hoppy wheat beer aged in pinot noir and gin barrels...I'm game! It pours a hazy golden straw topped by finger of lightly off-white foam. The nose comprises orange zest, grape juice, perfume, light red wine grapes, vanilla, and a touch of juniper bush. Things are oddly perfume-y, grape-must-y here, making for a never-before-smelled experience for me. The taste holds notes of raspberry-like berry, zinfandel grapes, light lemon zest, light coriander, white grape juice, light red apple skins, mandarin orange flesh, light spruce, and light juniper berries. Wow, lots going on here, almost too much... The body is a light medium, with a light moderate carbonation and a sorta/kinda dry finish. Overall, I applaud the barrel-aging here, but I think things just go too far in terms of complexity. Nothing stands out enough to continually enjoy or zero in on, but everything comes in and makes itself known at some point. Just too much happening at once to really enjoy things.
