A German guy turned me on to this and now it's one of my favorites....hard to find it on tap in the US...bottles are at bevmo.

It's an unfiltered wheat so the appearance will be cloudy and a rich brown w slight orangey color. A very rich full head that will snow cone if you poor it right. Always a little water in the glass to activate the yeast.

The distinct nutmeg really comes out which I've only seen attempted duplication by ale works which can't be compared.

Overall a very fine weisse beer. Best weisse I've had. Can't drink the American ones like widmer anymore...

The giant 1L stein is a somewhat amber color. Small white head on top, but that might have to do with the pout. They wanted more beer than head.

More balanced than I was expecting. Bubble gum, banana, and clove are there, and not one dominates or takes over. different, but nice. None of those flavors really come out too much, the overall levels are lower than that of Weihenstephaner or Ayinger.

Its a bit darker, which means a touch more caramel flavor, and yes. Its there. The normal Yeast esters take a backseat to the Dunkelweisse feeling. I would almost categorize this as as a Dunkelweisse.

A - Cloudy wheat body, several shades darker than most standard wheats. Closer to a dark amber. Sturdy beige head good retention.

S - Tangy and spiced with earthy bread grains. A little yeasty and slight fruit notes.

T - A crisp, sweet and tangy wheat flavor. Mild spice and a yeast kick. Bread and a hint of banana and alcohol warmth.

M - Chewy, yet refreshing. Medium body with a clean finish.

O - A good quality wheatbeer and a classic.

Ah, the “old school” weissbier from Schneider.
Had this many times, although this review is from notes on the beer on tap at the Weissesbrauhaus in 6/11.
Medium to dark brown. Lots of head, pretty much measured to the lines on the glass without a second thought.
The nose is spicy. A mix of bananas, bread, cloves, and nutmeg.
Flavor-wise, it falls right in between the fruit heavy offerings, and those that tend to lean toward spice notes. One nuance is how much the malts shine here. Bready up-front, with the fruity phenols kicking in a second later. A little bit of earthy spice hits the back of the palate, but not numbing or heavy. There's a little bit of tanginess that adds a little fruity touch in the end, too.
Texture is okay for easy drinking, but it falls into that class of wheat beers that come off a tiny bit chalky. Nothing too bad, but more than some.
Tasty – a classic. Not my absolute favorite from them, but still one of the benchmarks for the style.

Served on-tap in a white wine glass at Horse & Hound (Charlottesville, VA).

A: Dull dishwater brown with short cap of off-white head with a single thin line of lace.

S: Strong clove aroma with bubblegum and banana serving as role players.

T: THe flavor is also more clove than most hefeweizens. The bubblegum sweetness contrasts well with this flavor, and there is an ample amount of banana prior to the finish, which ends much more tart than average.

M: A medium mouthfeel without the lush thickness of Paulaner's version. Evenly carbonated.

O: A decent version of the style, but both Paulaner and Weihenstephaner has this one beat. Kind of ho-hum.

Draught into schneider weisse pint glass in Berlin, Germany.

A: A hazy non-transparent light gold with a moderately creamy head of decent retention.

Sm: Light barley and... liquorice? What? It's there. Some hops too.

T: Creamy open to well built body of cream, barley, liquorice, and a hint of ginger on the finish.

Mf: Very fizzy and gentle on the palate. Carries the taste. Drys up on the finish, making me want the next sip.

Dr: Too carbonated and heavy (relative to its ABV) for extended drinking, but I'd certainly get it again.

This was called "Tap 7" at the brewpub. On draught, a nice unfiltered, cloudy hefeweizen in a fun, boisterous atmosphere on a Sunday morning. Very cloudy dark orange / brown. Tons of spices, banana, and that nice yeast coming seeping through. No bitterness to speak of, and quite dry. liked a lot!

On tap at das bierhaus poured into a half liter aventenus glass.

Pours a fairly dark amber to light brown with a nice big white fluffy head that stays around for quite a while. Nose is light fruity and yeasty.

Taste is sweet, lots of banana but somehow the finish is quite dry and tasty. It reminds me of banana chips. Mouthfeel is full and rich, super drinkable.

The beer is served in a Weizen glass. Glass of cold water on the side to sip from periodically.

Appearance: As beer is served the 1 ¼" white head tops a cloudy golden brown or dark orange color beer. The head eventually recedes to about 1/8" for about half of the beer and leaves irregular sheets and legs of lacing when sipping. Toward the end of the beer there is a small ring around the liquid being fed by persistent carbonation and there is still some scattered lacing.

Smell: The aroma is classic hefeweizen but with wonderful balance so that no element dominates the others. The wheat, banana and clove are all intertwingled into a whole that there would seem to be no way to improve on

Taste: The flavors are pretty much predicted from the nose but again there is a wonderful subtlety to the flavors which seem to be an integrated whole of wheat, a bit of sweet malt, some gentle banana and clove, all intertwingled into a whole. None takes over and dominates our pushes out the others, they all play together nicely.

Mouthfeel: The mouth feel is medium bodied, soft and silky with a gentle persistent carbonation that last throughout the beer. The finish is medium to long and is a continuation of the flavors and their balance as they all quietly leave the scene leaving behind a trace of dryness without bitterness or alcohol detectable.

Drinkability: In some ways this beer was a surprise in that I hadn't expected it to be this good. However in retrospect it seems obvious that the folks who produce Aventinus ought to also do a wonderful weisse beer. Indeed I may just have a new favorite, or at least I will until I get a chance to try Weihenstephaner again or compare them in a side-by-side tasting. This is definitely a beer I could have more than one of and that I'll be revisiting again in the future. Unlike some weizen the balance on this one is, for me, perfect.

.5L into "nuclear power-plant" style glass

Poured with 2-3F of creamy off-white head over a murky apple-cider colored body, and leaves plenty of lacing. She's a beaut.

Spices are huge in this one - sweet clove dominates all, so I would have preferred a little more balance.

Flavor is simply awesome. Clove again comes through first, with some apricot peel, cinnamon, and good crisp apple.

Smooth, lightly carbonated body, with a relatively crisp finish.

Drinkability is large. I could go thru far too many of these in a session.

Just last week at Kroger, I noticed the beer gift packs on top of the microbrew cooler. Duh!!!, and I was all pissed off when I went in before Christmas and thought they had sold all the Mad Elf gift packs.

Just as well, the G. Schneider gift pack was way better. 5 beers and one FAT Shneider Weisse glass with room for a half-liter of beer and a 2-3 finger head. I figure I paid $9-10 for the glass.

Pours rather thickly giving a near-white 3 finger mounding head. Cloudy and orangish brown. The orange is more pronounced when held up to a strong light making it look more like a thick tropical drink.

Smell of light banana (compared to the SN Kellerweis I just finished) with cloves and nutmeg.

Nice wheat flavor. Less banana taste at first than other wheat beers, but the banana comes through very clearly in the aftertaste. Lightly sweet with nice tartness as well.

Medium thick. Nice and smooth on the tongue.

Very drinkable, especially considering it's relative thickness. Pretty mellow.

Review of Schneider weisse tap no.7 7/10/2009
The original recipe of the Schneider Brewery from what I gather upon reading the label, Ie never seen this before in the States, another benefit of living in Munich I guess!
Upon further research, apparently this is the normal Hefe under a different name---
Pours that-beautiful-slightly-darker-than normal Schneider Weisse color. A true signature of this great brewery. This is really a beautiful tone of chestnut brown, light ever-so light tan color on the effervescent head billowing out of the top of the glass. I would say this is a Dunkle Weiss.
Smells absolutely delicious, This really is aromatically one of the strongest Hefe's I hae tried. Very phenolic cloves, sweet malts, spicy peppers, ovveripe bananas, mixed with dark bread, figs, alcoholic warmth suprisingly sharp for a low ABV. The yeast is very fresh, and is a dominant note throughout. This is so fresh smelling, the spicy yeast is almost reminescent of a Belgian Dark Ale.
Taste falls a few notches short. The apperance, the phenominal smell had promised a kick in the mouth, but it is more subdued than expected. However, this is still very tasty. Malty, bready sweetness upfront, dark, musty fruity in the mouth, finishes with a sharp clove pepperyness. After a few sips, more flavors are revealed, and I am beginning to think I spoke a bit too soon about any lack of flavor.
Drinkablitiy is great. Bready sweet maltiness gives way to an almost tongue-tingling spiciness that is extremely intruguing. Picture a sweet English Brown Ale, or a standard German Dunkel with an extremly peppery finish, and a nice, creamy HefeWeizen mouthfeel.
This would go so well with game, or roasted fowl, it makes me giddy to experiment! The sweet floral notes makes something like a malty sauce with lavender or rosemary flowers come to mind...anyway this is a really good Hefe from a solid brewery. Check it out.

On-tap at Weisses Brauhaus in Munich. Served in a Schneider Weizen glass.

A: On the dark side for this style. Cloudy orange amber colored, with active carbonation and a generous frothy eggshell cap. Head retention is excellent, but not much lace is left behind.

S: Lemon and clove stood out the most. Ripe banana and sourdough bread aromas are there, but subdued. I also detected a slight hint of plum.

T: Seems to lean a little toward the dunkel side of the weizen family, which made me happy. The fruitiness here is a combination of very ripe banana and mild plums. Very interesting. The cloves come on strong, along with lemon rind, to provide a sharp spicy tartness in the middle. Underneath rides a biscuit flavor from the malts. Finishes tart and dry, with a lingering spiciness.

M: The grainy body has a high level of tingling carbonation.

D: This is yet another of the very fine Hefeweizens I had on my trip. It wasn't my favorite, but I enjoyed it quite a bit. The relatively low ABV makes it go down easy. It paired well with the heavy pork dish I had it with.

.5L glass at my house (50L keg, 100% CO2 tank at appropriate pressure for temp as per Schneider specs)

NOTE - if you ever buy a keg yourself, you want the Schneider sankey and a pressure regulator for pouring.

A - It is bit hazier than the bottle pour since the yeast is mixed better. It has a deep amber color.

S - Clove, yeast, subtle wheat. The clove does not over power the subtle wheat taste. I spilled a bit when tapping and I believe this is the first beer not to leave a pungent residual smell.

T - The clove is well balanced. It reminds me of Weihenstephaner, but a little less banana flavor.

M/F - The carbonation is the best I have seen in a Bavarian weizen. The advertising from the brewery highlights this... a Champagne-like... nothing better on a warm/hot day.

D - It is very easily drinkable. I like this and Penn Brewery's Weizen better than any I have ever drank. I am not big on the over powering clove and banana taste that other Bavarian weizen bring.

OK Schneider Weisse - one of the beers I have been drinking since I was young:

A - Very Hefeweizen although maybe a bit paler than the most beautiful ones but pours a very nice head like all Hefeweizen

S - Again very Hefeweizen - smell of orange and banana with some spice and clove but not as pronounced as in the best ones

T - What can I say very decent like a Hefeweizen should withouth the pronounced fruitiness of some

M - FIzzy and smooth with some yeast in it

D - Yep highly drinkable any time

On-tap 6/13/09 at Track 84 in Warwick, RI, served in a pilsener glass.

A: The beer is a dark gold color, with a large white head that fades slowly and leaves a thick lace on the glass.

S: The aroma is of bananas, wheat, light malts and a touch of hops.

T: The taste is very bready up front with flavors of wheat and a hearty malt character. There are background flavors of bananas, lemon and spices. The hops presence is mild but complementary. The after-taste is slightly bready and slightly sweet.

M: Crisp and very smooth, medium body, medium carbonation, finish is clean.

D: Very tasty and refreshing, goes down quite easily, not too filling, mild kick, excellent representation of style, this is a very good lighter beer with a lot substance to it that is worth drinking for a very long time.

.5L pour at Track 84 in Warwick RI

A - Beautiful hazy honey in color. Wonderful fluffy white head that lasts seemingly forever.

S - Clove, yeast, wheat. A bit more subtle than the other usual suspects.

T - Big clove, a bit of the banana maybe a tough of pepper too. The flavor isn't as full as the Ayinger or Weihenstephaner - the flavor is actually a little bit watery to me.

M/F - Light body with active but yet very fine and smooth carbonation.

D - This brew is easily drinkable. It's not at the top of the class but is enjoyable none the less.

Have had this beer on various occasions but recently at the Flying Saucer in Houston. Pouredc in a Schneider Hefe-weisse glass. Pours a cloudy light brown color with a nice inch long head. Bananas (which I love) and spices in the aroma. I love the taste of this beer. More banana, clove, light caramel and some light apple tast near the end. Pretty crisp and excellently balanced. Very easy to drink all day. One of my favorites of this style. A great summer beer.

Draught into Weizen glass.

Pours a cloudy golden brown with a big, fluffy, long lasting white head.

Nose is banana and cloves, crisp wheat.

Taste matches nose - banana and clove underpin the crisp, light wheat body of the beer, with a slightly dry, clean finish with a hint of hop bitterness that doesn't linger on the palate at all. Fruity banana is less prominent than, say, Weihenstephaner.

Emminently drinkable, delicious and classic.

Schneider Weisse Hefeweizen
Reviewed @ Lüke, NO 3/20/09 lunch - draft>large SW signature wheat glass
A 4.5 - Dark golden honey in color, respectable head, excellent lace and retention for entire beer.
S 4.5 - strong banana aroma evident, quickly followed by clove notes.
T 4.5 - excellent taste. Taste follows smell on a solid wheat base. Mild sweet finish.
MF 4.0 - medium body for a hefe, less carbonation than expected, but still delish!
D 4.5 - Excellent, this the first time I had this on draft, it surpassed my expectations.

The presentation on this brew was great. I had it at Lüke bar/restaurant in NOLA. They have a cool little bar, good food, and their own custom brews. Check them out on the web. I added them beeradvocate on 3/25/09.

On tap at Beer Run, Charlottesville, VA. Served in a 10 oz. fitted glass.

Appearance: A dirty orange beer with slow but plentiful carbonation, a foamy white head that fades into a sheen of lace, and runny, glittery lacing that, while nothing to write home about, definitely holds its own.

Aroma: Lots of wheat here, more so than in many hefeweizens, and it comes through clean and crisp, which is nice. There's also the obligatory one-two banana-clove note, though it's not as pronounced as I'm used to.

Taste: Fairly mild, and similar to what you'd expect from the nose. Predominantly powdery wheat, sweet and crisp, with a few citrus twangs, bananas, and white pepper/cloves.

Mouthfeel: Crisp, light, reasonably thin, a little uneven, spritzy. Stylistically accurate.

Drinkability: Nothing wrong here. Crisp, refreshing, light, low in well-hidden alcohol - a fine summer (or unseasonably warm fall, eh, Virginia?) brew.

On-tap at Zum Schneider in the East Village. Served in a tall Schneider weizen glass, its a hazy amber-brown with a thick off-white head.

I really dig this wheat beer, it's a nice change of pace with the earthy character. The wheat has a raw character to it that matches the mellow clove, pepper, and slight banana yeast character. It's rich in flavor on all fronts and has a wonderfully smooth and creamy feel.

This is one of the great German wheat beers and change of pace for your typical hefe. Recommended.

You have to love the Toranado for being able to experience beers such as this on tap. Tobe honest, this was my girlfriend's beer, so I just got a couple of tastes.

A- Almost like a brewpub weisse
S- very fresh malt and hops with citrus. Much more interesting then bottled version
T- If I was to make a weisse again, this is what I would want. This is the type of beer that you can use to initaite any female to craft beers
M- Typical chewiness from a wheat like this
D- It is nice to have one like this, but I couldn't drink two.

My favorite German wheat beer. Should have reviewed this long before now.

The beer pours the perfect (IMHO) hefeweizen color of hazy tannish brown with great head retention and lacing. The head on this bad boy just lasts and lasts. The nose is very complex, consisting of nutmeg, bubble gum, bannana, white pepper and clove. Perhaps the weihenstephner is a bit more complex on the nose, but it would be a photo finish. The beer is pretty much hefe weizen perfection on the palate. One gets a sweetish flavor profile of cotton candy, dry clove and nutmeg. The beer is moderately sweet on the palate, but has a very dry, peppery, hefeweizen finish. The beer is medium bodied on the palate, with very well disguised abv.

This is just super stuff, and I give high marks to the Metro in Baltimore for always having it on tap. The flavors are so complex, I never get tired drinking this beer. Each and every sip is enjoyable and interesting. Really, this is pretty much everything a hefeweizen should be. Highly recommended.

A: a murky light brown, almost like apple juice not from concentrate.

S: spices and fresh fruit... apple, pear, a little fig. Some clove and grassiness, a little banana yeastiness.

T: Clove, banana, ripe fruit peels, apple. Some peppery notes in there. Tasty.

M: Smooth... not as carbonated as I may have thought, but that makes it a VERY easy drinker. Great for even a lukewarm day, and an easy candidate for seconds.
