Alright, this is my first eisbock ever. I was expecting similarities to the other offerings from Weisses Bräuhaus G. Schneider & Sohn. Nope.

500mL into a tulip, this beer pours as plum-brown with a uniform opacity of color. Foam is rich and copious. Smell reminds me of malt, plums, molasses / demerara sugar, and soy sauce (it would make an interesting marinate for fish)

Into the pie hole: the first two characteristics noted were sweetness and richness. There are syrup-like qualities to this beer. It is intense and heavy. To my tastes this beer should be matched with food: chinese cuisine or deep fried/battered fish would pair nicely.

Overall, an excellent beer, with the 12% ABV not immediately apparent.

A: Murky and dark, with a sweet tea appearance. No head at all, even when poured vigorously...only a very thin ring of tiny white bubbles. No lacing.

S: Alcohol is in the forefront, with a slightly fruity smell. It's a bit like raisins, or more accurately raisin bread...it has a slightly sweet smell that you get when cooking raisin bread.

T: The flavors are very similar to the scent. It has a huge fruity flavor up front, with some bread-like aftertaste. No bitterness, just lots of sweetness. I don't taste much alcohol. Very malty.

M: The mouthfeel is very very full. It is unquestionably a sipper. It has a pretty sharp bite.

O: I like this beer, especially for the fact that it is 12% and it masks the alcohol relatively well. You can still tell it is there, but it still tastes like a beer. There were only a few downsides, where I thought it was a bit too fruity and I would have liked more head...even though it's hard for a high alcohol beer to have a decent head, this didn't have one at all.

Given this as a gift in a single bottle for christmas. Poured into a wheat beer glass, pours deep cloudy orange with a 2-3 finger white head.
From here on out, my review is biased; I was given this because I like eisbocks, but the giver didn't realize it was a weizen-eisbock. I'm sure this is a world-class beer as the Bros have said, but wheat beers are NOT my thing.
The smell disgusts me entirely, almost to the point of throwing up. That yeasty, wheaty aroma which I know is a sign of a great wheat beer, makes me sick. It smells like an old peanut butter and jelly sandwich to me.
The taste isn't much better; if I ignore the smell I can stomach it, but barely. It's just a yeasty mess in my mouth. Again, I know it's an excellent beer, but I really do not like the style.
Mouthfeel was good, relatively full-bodied as wheat beers are wont to be. Unfortunately for me, the full mouthfeel only exacerbated my gustatory distress.
Overall, I feel like I'm not being fair to this beer. It's obvious it's an excellent beer, but wheat beers in general are not my thing.

**2006 Bottle Review**

I've been hanging onto this for a number of years. Christmas seemed a fitting occasion to crack it open!

A - With any beer of this age and alcohol percentage, it's no surprise it pours without a head and very little carbonation for that matter. Still and gorgeous, I left the sediment resting in the bottle...for now. Aventinus is a clear deep tawny mahogany color with ruby highlights.

S - Subtle notes of soft wheat, sticky caramel, and ruby port-soaked raisin escape this low-key beer until it's swirled when disaster strikes! Good bye smoothness, hello soy sauce. Thankfully it hasn't reached that "Triple Bock" stage yet.

T - Malty depth consumes this beer from first sip as toasted wheat bread drizzled with melted caramel and clover honey marries the yeast's dark fruitiness. Layers of complexity unfold with sangria-soaked raisin, red grape, and fig newton notes.

M - Carbonation is faint giving this beer a flat, though not disruptively so, feel that aids it's already smooth body and warming alcohol finish. This beer goes to show how tacking a few years on a high alcohol beer can really smooth it out.

O - Aventinus Weizen Eisbock might be a high alcohol beer but this one is showing significant signs of age leading me to believe I waited a little too long to crack this precious beer open. Its thick maltiness creates a beautiful marriage with the yeast esters but peeking notes of soy sauce disrupt the flow. 2006 in 2012 is good but not as wonderful as it could be.

This is my first Eisbock. Looking forward to it- the only thing I know about Eisbocks are from the BJCP guidelines. Its Christmas Eve, the kids are in bed, the wife is wrapping gifts, so I think this is a great time to review this beer!

The appearance is a somewhat opaque/translucent dark brown with an off-white head that is gathering at the sides of the pour. Almost stout or porter like until you hold it up to the light. Smells of dried dark fruits like raisins or plums, very malty and slight alcohol. Tastes sweet, dried fruits, toasted malt, some alcohol evident, and a dry crisp finish. This is an intense beer with many developed flavors, and I find it interesting that hop flavors are not one of them. This may be the antithesis of an American Barleywine. Mouthfeel is full, and low carbonation. This one is a sipper, and is developing more of a flavor profile as it warms.

From what I understand, this is a difficult and time consuming beer to make. First it must be brewed to a higher strength, then frozen to concentrate, then lagered for a long period of time. This one is a nice alternative to other high strength, highly hopped ales like American Barleywines, Russian Imperial Stouts and Imperial IPAs. Highly recommeded-just to expand the palate perspective! Merry Christmas!

500mL poured into a champagne flute at 7C tasted at 9-12C.

Dark earthy rich cocoa nibs-chestnut-mahogany brown, a light reddish clay hues with a thick and stable sea foam head that is spotty but generally dense 7cm head that remains indefinitely. Mostly clear with a little bit of hazing, but high density gives a more obstructed appearance. Sporadic but ample carbonation. Very nice but with little lacing that I would have otherwise expected.

Nose of alcohol, coming in at 12% this is not surprise, but it doesn't come across as gasoline or as evaporation of the excess. Warm caramel and dried, juicy fruits: plum and raisin. Balancing spices of all spice, old nutmeg (but not the zest of mace) and clove. Elevated bright notes that flow generously like a cool spring breeze in a citrus orchard.

Dark cooked and dried fruits: plums, figs and apricots. Creamy malt flows just over a light residual sugars and smooth chocolaty roast nuts. Dark bready yeasts lends to the satisfying body that holds up the fruit. The more i look the more the perfect blending melds flavours my palate is just unable to accurately distinguish. Impeccable for the style for what I have previously tasted.

Mouth feel is smooth and generously light while creamy and rich. Lots of sugars and a little fat on the finish. Luxury.

Just great. Way too drinkable for a 12% ABV. Smooth, robust and as easy or complex as you could want it to be. I would have liked to seen a little more layering on the nose and a lot more lacing. The 5 on taste is more like a 4.8-4.9 for style for sure, but was just a little to condensed for my palate and for personal taste is a tad generous (more like 4.5), but amazing; likewise the nose but layered complexity on the nose is more important to my "unbiased" rating than is layering in the flavour profile. So the nose is more like 4.25 but worth the round up.

God damned great fucking beer!

500ml bottle. Very nice to see this offering in Alberta, when the others from this brewery have been available here for so long.

This beer pours a very hazy, dark burnt amber hue, with a teeming tower of tight foamy, rather creamy ecru head, which takes it rather easy in coming down to earth, eventually leaving some walk of shame, ripped nylon lace around the glass.

It smells of rich, dark, fleshy orchard fruit, some additional mushy banana, caramel/toffee malt, a mildly astringent/sweet wheat dichotomy, a bit of aged demarara rum, and earthy, somewhat musty hops. The taste is a sweet, sugary wheat/barley combo from the outset, followed closely by banana pudding, soft spices - barely evoking clove, perhaps only in my head - dark sugar, somehow differentiated molasses, a mild oily nuttiness, some port-like alcohol heat, and drying, earthy hops flying well under the radar.

The carbonation is tame and equally frothy for the most part, with little to apologize for, the body a stout, sturdy medium weight, and a bit syrupy in its otherwise impeccable smoothness. It finishes still sweet - fruity, malty, and boozy - all well tempered in their sexy restraint.

Wow - what an experience - so many input components that I was unfairly waiting for at least one of them to go off the rails, but, nope - mea culpa - everything is oh so very well balanced and integrated. A hallmark for this uncommonly available style, which given its inherent nature, needs finesse and subtly in order to be even remotely drinkable. This has both, and more, in spades, so grab one if you can.

Appearance: dark cola with a (for a 12%) quite impressive dark cream head.
Smell: sweet malt and a slightly sour dark fruit. Some cotton candy in the mix.
Taste: all that the nose promises! Loads of flavor.
Mouthfeel: full and full of carbonation.
Overall: quite a treat. Gets better and better as it warms.

After reading all the extolling reviews on this rare and special beer, I prepared myself for a powerful punch of strong flavor and a malty rich mouthfeel that could live up to the hype (and price).
Honestly, I was disappointed.

The beer seemed a little "bland" in taste compared to the hype I was reading all over the internet. I'm sure if I would not have psyched myself up for "the best beer experience of my life" then I would have enjoyed this beer more and accepted it as the special delicate treat that it is.

I will definitely try this beer again while managing my expectations.
I'm sure I'll enjoy it more next time.

Bottle date 09.160 - If I'm right, that makes it a 2009 vintage.

Pours brown and murky with burnt orange highlights. It's head is small for a weissbier, and dissipates very quickly to a thin cap. Lacing is spotty. Powerful aroma boasts fig, raisin, and overripe banana notes. Delicate cookie dough and clove aromas linger in the background. There is something of a boozy quality to it that actually meshes quite well with the rest of its scent. It's flavour is sweet, malty, and estery. Fig, raisin, and sweet honey up front followed by banana, slight pumpernickel, and a mild tang thay keeps the sugars from cloying.

Full-bodied with medium carbonation. Feels somewhat syrup and sticky in the mouth. Well-integrated alcohol provides pleasant warmth to the finish without making it harsh. The richness of flavour in this beer verges on decadence, making it a real treat if you fancy something sweet. Love it.

A: Pouring a nice thick head in my tulip gives the Eisbock a robust look. The lacing on the sides is minimal, but the head retains a creamy foam that allows the smell to liven up the joint.

S: One of my favorite parts of this beer is the aroma. Heavy notes of banana, fig, malt, and even a slight nudge of pineapple create a complex and inviting panoply of olfactory experiences. There's a reason this thing gets so much love.

T: Candied plums, slightly roasted figs, clove, and cinnamon notes all colide in a beautiful collage of flavor. The malts provide a rich texture alongside the alcohol notes. Taking a breath allows the spices to tickle the tongue.

M: Medium-bodied, the leaves a slight aftertaste and goes down way too smoothly.

O: There's a reason this is one of my all-time faves. World-class, this beer is.

G. Schneider & Sohn's Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock: bottle dated 2011; serial # 005218.

I poured about half of the bottle into my glass, then gave the rest of the bottle a modest swirl, poured about half of what remained, then gave the final few ounces a more vigorous swirl, poured them in, and there still remained some sediment on the bottom of the bottle. This yielded a hazy, chocolate-brown body that allows some burnt umber and rust hues to shine through when held up to a strong light source. The grayish beige head rises high and stick around a while before slowly falling to a half-inch ring of foam that evenly covers the top of the beer. I waited and waited for the ring to dissolve into lace. It didn't. Rarely have I seen such staying power.

The beer's aroma is strong enough to reach my nose before I lean in for closer inspection. When I do, I'm greeted with an intriguing bouquet. Dark rum and molasses are at the fore, and complemented by notes of roasted dried figs, prunes and raisins, cloves, and black pepper. A very mild citral aroma lurks somewhere in the background. My mother decorates and perfumes the house in the wintertime by sticking cloves into whole, unpeeled oranges The aromas in this beer remind me of times spent sipping ports and red wine and eating rich holiday fare with the faint smell of those spicy oranges in the background.

My first sip of this beer tells me that it begs to be sipped slowly. Its body is thick, almost syrupy. The alcohol's flavor is well-integrated: It is palpable on the palate, and warms both throat and stomach.

The myriad flavors suggested in the nose are present in each sip, but to them are added those of tawny port wine and cane sugar, roasted hazelnut, black bread, and dates in molasses syrup. The flavors dance about on the palate and grow bolder and more complex as the beer warms. Drink this brew slowly.

Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock is one of the most interesting beers I've tasted. It me over an hour to finish the 11.2 oz. bottle, and when I was finished I thought to myself that I was just growing accustomed to the beer's intensity and complexity. I'll be revisiting this one soon.

Bottle number 2012 23291. Served cool into a goblet.

Deep amber brown color with good clarity on the pour. Thin head settles immediately.

Aroma is sweet, malty, and boozy. Nutty, caramel, and toasted malt.

Flavor is intense and very enjoyable. It has a huge malt backbone which gives it a lot of sweetness but there is still a fair bit of hops to give balance. The alcohol is strong but not overwhelming. I bet it would only get better with a few years in the cellar.

Mouthfeel is big in body, low in carbonation, and well balanced.

Overall a very special beer and I'm glad I finally got a chance to try it.

330 mL bottle poured into a Kuhnhenn snifter. 2010 bottle.

Appearance - Pours with a significant amount of sediment in the stream of the pour, but then I find none in the glass. My eyes must deceive me. Deep amber, like a black rum. Small khaki head, but it's short lived. After 5 minutes, it looks like I'm drinking 10 ounces of cognac. That would be a rough night.

Smell - Booze, whoa. Bubble gum, caramel, bananas, and a strong spiciness that is amplified by the alcohol.

Taste - The wheat is much more present here. Gives it a grittiness that definitely adds to the flavors. Very fruity character with that distinctive bubble gum flavor reminiscent of the non-iced version. Bananas and cloves that further remind me of its wheated roots. The finish is booze and caramel malt, though. A slight throwback to the fruits, but it's all toffee in the finish.

Mouthfeel - Low carbonation and quite hot, even for 12%. That said, I still have to concentrate to pace myself.

Overall - Enjoyable and different from most beers out there. I had this out of a wooden cask one time and drank three of them. I don't know how I did that. Wasted youth. Anyway, it doesn't impress me as much out of the bottle, but perspective is a funny thing.

Serving Type - Bottle

Appearance - Dark tan/black, minor 1/2 inch head, not much lacing.

Smell - Huge grape, rasin and plum aroma. Sugars, malts, spices, belgium yeast sweetness. Some alcohol , a little bit of wine like aroma after it warms a bit.

Taste - Strong rasin and plum upfront, with alcohol, sugars and malts. Apple and grapes and cherries also add even more fruity flavors. Not much bitter or tartness, very much like a wheat ale with its grainy finish. Near the finish, some molassess mixed with some cinnamon and banana comes out to finish this beer off.

Mouthfeel - Strong, booze nails whole mouth with each drink. All the sugars and fruits coat tounge and palette leaving sweet and spicy notes. Palate gets the same sugars and fruits, along with huge caramel malts. Aftertaste is dry, fruity and boozy.

Overall - Excellent, my first eisbock, id describe this somewhere between a heffe, a belgium strong ale, and even a port wine. Fantastic fruity notes, big alcohol flavor in each sip and nice amouth of sweet suagrs and spices. A must try.

A: A dark, caramel colored beer. The tan head is about 1 finger high and has almost no retention whatsoever, or lacing.

S: Clove, dark fruits, and a fair amount of the alcoholic phenols, as well as a pungent hit of just plain alcohol.

T: Lots of malts right off the bat, with hints of caramel and toffee and a slight toasty flavor. After the malts there is a peppery spice, along with a bit of sweet clove-like flavors as well as banana as the beer warms. The finish is amazingly sweet and fruit-like, bringing in hints of apple and raisin. The alcohol rides the flavor from start to finish without ever becoming overpowering, and warms the belly nicely.

M: moderate body, heavy on the carbonation, has a syrupy feel on the back of the throat due to the stickiness.

O: Definitely a nice beer. The alcohol is present, but I wouldn't have put it at 12% ABV based upon taste alone. Well balanced, a fair amount of complexity. Definitely not a beer that I would drink all the time, but it is certainly well-crafted.

A - Cloudy dark reddish brown with a creamy off white head that persists for a good while and settles down to a solid flat cap.

S - Fruity, spicy, sweet, and a little winey. Almost that candi smell too.

T - Luxuriously smooth, mild, malty like cereal. I don't get as much of the fruity note from the aroma though there's a hint of banana and maybe a raisiny thing going on. A little sting is left on the tongue and in the back of the throat afterwards. That's unusual - it's almost like a whisper of jalapeno sting minus the jalapeno flavor. It's never too prominent and fades gradually but lasts a really long time. I don't get the strong alcohol taste some others have mentioned.

M - soft, medium-thick, more carbonation than expected

O - A really pleasant, soft, rich, malty beer with a lot going on. Drinks like a thick stout but with much more malt and no bitterness.

Appearance: Dark brown / raisin-y with a single finger of head

Smell: Booze, wheat, dark fruit

Taste: This is awesome. Time has been kind to this beer and has produced what can only be described as "alcoholic raisin bran". It's literally like drinking an alcoholic version of the cereal.

Mouthfeel: Sweet with a little bit of burn. A little chewy like a beer of this quality should.

Overall: I like this one a lot, though time does not seem to tame the alcohol bite, so much as just bring out the rest of the flavors. It's a great beer and should not be ignored on the shelves, despite all of the newer craft beers out there.

My friend in DC has been raving about this brew for over a year now. He came up to visit me recently. So of course we go out to buy a few brews. He spotted the Aventinus and basically begged me to try it.

When he first poured be a glass, I saw that it had a caramel color, and a good amount of yeast. As the yeast slid to the bottom of the glass, you could see it giving off CO2. The foam had a nice coffee-milk sort of look.

The most important part: Taste. I'd have to say that this is a very well flavored wheat ale. I want to say it had a mango taste to it coupled with a strong wheat taste. Very smooth and easy to drink. Favorited.

Bottle dated: 2011 025869.

Poured into a brandy snifter. Pours dark cloudy toffee brown with a quickly dissipating off-white head. Some bubbles can be seen rising from the side of the glass, but not many. It appears darker than the regular Aventinus. There are aromas of banana, sweet malt, bubblegum, dark fruits, sweet malts, and some alcohol. It is all the aromas I loved in the regular Aventinus, but intensified. The taste follows the nose. The banana flavors are strongly represented from the yeast. The sweet malt provides a nice backbone for this beer. There are dark fruits in the flavor as well. The alcohol is detectable in the taste, but it blends well with this beer. It does not come across as boozy, but well balanced. The body is full with solid carbonation. The beer is smooth with a clean finish. The alcohol provides a nice warming feel. I wouldn't mind having a few of these put away for cold winter months. This is an excellent beer that held up very well despite the age.

A: Huge tan head of 5+ fingers sits on this semi-hazy, mahogany colored beer. A fair amount of lacing and head retention are present.

S: Rich and dark fruits are in the aromas, with caramel malt notes and some woody aspects. I get faint reminders of the typical weizen yeast smells of banana and clove. Delightful to smell.

T: Wow, this is a powerful tasting beer, full strength and of alcohol, like a bourbon. Savory, spicy, and sweet with fruit flavors such as raisin and plum.

M: Carbonation is in the medium to high range, with a full, creamy body. The finish is rich and full of alcohol warming. Aftertastes are of molasses and caramel, with a spicy kick to boot.

O: A very strong and complex beer, with reminders of both a weizen-bock and beer aged in spirit barrels. Highly recommend!

A- Pours a deep, almost purple tinged brown. Not an overwhelming head, though since it is from bottle and I made sure to pour it to produce a less than thick head...

S- Smells fruity, with some of those clove and spice smells of a good hefeweizen.

T- Fruity and spicy, like if you crossed a really good hefeweizen with a proper ale. Complex and very tasty.

M- A good full mouth feel, but not to syrupy or anything.

O- I will no doubt always have this beer in my fridge. Then again, I'm slightly biased in that I always liked their hefeweizens above all others I have tried. Even so, definitely try to get this one, you will not regret it!

Served from bottle into a frosted Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock glass (proper). Poured a deep dark red-orange (almost brown) with a three finger light tan colored head that subsided to one finger very slowly. Maintained phenomenal lacing throughout the glass. The aroma was comprised of sweet malt, banana, wood, spices, subtle sweet alcohol, dark fruit, and wheat. The flavor was of sweet malt, banana, fruit, spices, sweet alcohol, dark fruit, and wheat. It had a medium feel on the palate with medium-high carbonation. Overall this was a pretty good brew. The balance on this one was truly awe-inspiring as all the components in this one blended really well together and none of them overtook the others. You would never guess this one to be 12% as it wears it so well. Definitely a must try for anyone who calls themselves a beer fan.
