Poured from bottle into a snifter glass

Appearance – The beer pours a brown/mahogany color with a small creamish colored head. The head fades rather quickly leaving a decent level of lacing on the sides of the glass.

Smell – The aroma is sweet and malty with a strong showing of an alcohol aroma. The sweeter aromas are largely stone fruit in nature with cherry, plum, and raisin all present and strong. The malty smells are a nice mix of wheat and a bready smell with the boozy alcohol aroma rounding out the sweeter and maltier smells, giving the beer a very inviting smell.

Taste- The taste is robust and big as would be expected for a 12 % abv brew with the flavors following the nose very well. It starts with a wheaty and dark fruit flavor upfront which creates a backbone for other flavors to come and go upon. Toward the middle the fruit flavors intensify some as more cherry enters the taste while a yeasty and spice flavor complement wheat taste at this time as well. Along with the fruit so too comes nice flavors of caramel and toffee, which get stronger more toward the end of the taste. Amore toward the end and along with the caramel and toffee comes a alcohol taste. While it starts out more moderate it grows in strength more toward the end in the taste. The flavors mix and mingle on the tongue to in the end leave a very satisfyingly sweet but balanced boozy and lightly spiced flavor on the tongue.

Mouthfeel- The body of the brew is quite thick and creamy with a very soothing feeling on the tongue as the creamy body and lighter carbonation create a full mouthfeel. This feel is quite nice for all the rich ad boozy flavors of the brew, making for a nice sipping and warming brew.

Overall – A somewhat obscure brewing style done very well. This is one quite tasty brew and well worth a try.

The Tap 6 Aventinus is one of my personal favorites,but I've yet to indulge in their eisbock offspring up until now. Poured from a 500ml bottle into an Erdinger glass. I think it's very fitting.

Appearance: Dark brown with a good half inch of brownish tinted head that dissipates rather quickly and little lacing. I notice that there are little to no sediment or "floaties" as opposed to the original Aventinus, which is an unfiltered brew. This beer in an Erdinger glass looks amazing, and I feel this is definitely how you should drink it.

Smell: My nose is a little plugged, but I can definitely smell the wheat, and I can pick up some caramalized scents and a bit of alcohol.

Taste: First taste makes me check the bottle. 12% alcohol. Huh, that was a little unexpected. I can taste the malt and wheat first and foremost, and some sweeter tastes, like toffee or burnt sugar. The alcohol is pretty noticeable, not sure if anyone else picked up on this.

Mouthfeel: This is thick, almost stout thick. Was really let down by this, because being a "Heffe Head" as I like to call it, one of my favorite things about this particular style is the smooth, easy drinking feel and taste to them.

Overall: When I heard about a second Aventinus beer that was a hybrid with a bock, I was struck with joy. After drinking this beer, I remember my dad telling me "Don't get too excited over things; Something about it will be bound to disappoint you". This beer is a good choice, but the feel really killed it for me. I guess I'll be sticking to the original.

T - Caramel, toffee, very malty, little wheat, burnt sugar.

M - Think and heavy!

O - This is a heavy drinking beer. The malt and sugar bill on this, as well as the alcohol is huge!

M: Mediocre Carbonation, Medium Bodied, Mildly Sweet, Mildly Boozy, Chewy

Overall, a pretty robust eisbock and full of deep, rich flavors that almost leave it a little thick but has aged very well.

I picked up a bottle of Schneider's Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock last week for $4.59 at The Lager Mill. I have never tried this style before, so I went to the store to see if they had any I wound up with this one, the only Eisbock they had, so lets see how it goes. 2012 Vintage Bottle #12966. Poured from a brown 11.2oz skinny bottle.

A- The label looks nice the shiny silver looks good against the purple background and it catches the eye. It poured a very dark muddy brown color that took on some nice mahogany hues when held to the light with barley a fingers worth of tan head that quickly died down to a very thin ring that eventually faded to nothing leave no lacing behind and noticeable alcohol legs. This is good looking for the style, I really liked the color.

S- The aroma starts off with a high amount of sweetness that takes on some brown sugar and molasses like aroma followed by loads of malts that impart some bready, caramel, and wheat like aromas. After that comes the fruits which are mainly dark fruits with plum and raisins sticking out the most with some apple cider and a slight banana like aroma coming through. Towards the end I get a slight bit of spicy yeast with some cloves coming through and there is a noticeable alcohol aroma. This beer had a very good aroma, the fruits were nice and fairly complex.

T- The taste seems to be fairly similar to the aroma, it starts of with a high amount of sweetness that impart a slight molasses flavor followed by loads of malts that impart a bready, caramel, and wheat flavors. Up next comes the fruits which are pretty much dominate by the dark fruits with some raisins, plums and concord grapes coming through along with a slight hint of banana. On the finish there's a light amount of spicy yeast with cloves sticking out the most followed by a pretty strong alcohol flavor that is pretty warming and it seems to blend with a lighter amount medium bitterness with a sweet and boozy dark fruit aftertaste. This is a nice tasting beer, but the alcohol was a little to harsh and could have been hidden better.

M- Not so smooth, warming, chewy, on the fuller side being medium bodied, with a very low amount of carbonation. The mouthfeel seems to be true to style, it was nice.

Overall I thought this was a nice beer and a good example of the style, but since this is my first one I'm mainly going off of how BA describes the style, and it seems to pretty similar to that. This beer didn't have the greatest drinkability, it's for sure a sipper, but the flavors did do a good job at holding my attention but one bottles is just the right amount, no way I would anymore than that, it would get too sweet and boozy. What I liked the most about this beer was the aroma, It was very good and full of nice fruity aromas that were pretty pleasing and it had just enough wheat in it. What I liked the least about this beer was how boozy it was, I know it's !2% but the alcohol seems a little harsh to me and I think it could have hidden better. I might buy this beer again for special occasion, but I don't see my getting it again in the near future, but I would I feel like it's worth trying, I think wine lovers would really like this. All in all I wasn't really impressed with this beer, but I wasn't disappointed either, I just think that that alcohol could have been hidden a little better and that really hurt the drinkability, but the other than that the flavors and aromas were pretty nice. This is my second beer from this brewery and I for sure like the Wiezenbock the most and I would like to try more of their beers and I will be on the look out for more examples of this style. It's a nice sipper, but I wouldn't call it a favorite.

very little foam on top, vary dark. the foam that is present slides slowly down the side when tilted and is a little thick.
smell is thick and malty; almost a sweet kind of vinegar in there?
a little bitter fruit-y, a little almost over-ripe fruit-y to the point of a slight vinegar. a little bit like a wine, the alcohol comes through in the nose, and then again on the back of the tongue. have to keep it cool or i bet the alcohol will run rampant over the taste. medium to thick feel on the tongue and overall a decent brew considering it's 12%. reading over others' reviews the 'ripe cherries' description hits it on the head. such a difference in the german/austrian versio of high abv brews versus the belgians'.... i've had it before, i'll have it again, but it's not tops on my list for the higher abv taste. but they did do a great job on it....

Appearance: Dark dark brown almost black. opaque. a finger of off-white and foamy head. fades quickly to nothing. pretty good looking beer

Smell: dark fruits. some wheat and a hint of alcohol.

Taste: Wheat, Dark fruits and alcohol. One drink at a time tastes pretty damn good, but if you take back to back sips and alcohol takes over the taste. I wish it were a tad more drinkable

Mouthfeel: Heavy, a bit chewy. low carbonation. warming sensation is certainly present.

Overall: very good beer but the alcohol is a bit overpowering. I like a strong alcohol presence in my strong beers but this one takes over the taste.

A- Clear dark brown body with a small off white head.

A- Dark fruit, bananas, caramel, figs.

T- Quite a bit more boozy than the Weizenbock, leaves a bit of an alcohol burn. Superbly sweet. Wheaty clovey weizenbock feel, just stronger.

M- Full bodied and sticks around in my mouth. Moderate carbonation.

D- I was a bit surprised how boozy it was, but it was delicious. I'm not sure I could handle more than one.

Good Spirits Co. Glasgow (330ml for £5.20):
Chestnut brown with some deep red tinges and a huge foamy head that is very slightly off-white.

Strong plum aroma and a lot of banana to kick things off, along with some figs and nice amount of alcohol. There is some raisins, a bit of bubblegum and a lot of spice up next, this together with some darker fruits and sugar. The smell of this one has a lot of depth and there is some clove making an appearance to along with some spice and grapes.

Alcohol to begin with but nothing overpowering, this is followed by most of what the nose promised. The taste consists of banana, cloves and dark fruits with figs, raisins and especially plums all featuring. There is some spice as expected and spice as expected along with a few malts. this taste is rounded of with some sweetness and a boozy alcohol flavour.

Full bodied and quite sweet with no bitterness and a fair amount of carbonation. It is quite boozy and dry towards the end and it certainly packs a punch.

The flavours where very well balanced and the beer went down better than I was expecting whilst still having to be sipped. The aroma was really something special though with each smell complimenting the previous.

11.2 oz bottle into a Duvel tulip. 2010 vintage.

A: Pours a very dark brown with good opacity due to the haziness of the yeast. Huge yeast particles settle on the bottom of the glass. This features really impressive head retention for 12% - I poured it about 4 minutes ago and there's still a solid off-white colored film left on top.

S: The first thing I notice is huge dark fruit sweetness, along with lighter fruit esters and even some faded hops. After a while, caramel, brown sugar, molasses, and chocolate will enter the picture. There's a noticeable oxidation to the aroma, giving it both a stronger fruit vibe along with an underlying soy note to it. The alcohol presence is mercurial; it's about what I expected.

T: Flavors start off with a lot of ripe cherries and wheat malt. Afterwards, it shows hints of soy sauce (in a mild, pleasing fashion), chocolate, ripe pear, and apple. Not quite as deep, or even as intensely flavored as I expected. Once it warms up, it becomes more and more boozy without really contributing much complexity, and after a while becomes even sweeter; though it also becomes spicier in the finish as well. So yeah, this does have a bit of complexity and depth to it. Warts and all, this is a hell of an experience - and honest to God, it's enjoyable.

M: At the first sip, it's just about the silkiest damn thing I've ever put in my mouth. After a while, it becomes a bit more astringent and even boozy. Combined with the carbonation, it features that subtle 'airy sponge cake' quality to the texture. While it's hard for me to taste the alcohol, it's very easy to notice on the tongue, esophagus, and stomach - the syrupy finish doing its job to an extent.

O: Fresh, I'm sure the booze would knock my tongue out, but it's done a good job of evolving into something soft and mellow...ish. I seriously can't imagine how boozy this would be with only a month or two of age on it. The warmer it gets, the harsher it gets - and the less I want to drink it. Worth a try, but drink cold!

Appearance: Dark with a light and airy head that dissapated quickly.

Aroma: Bready, slightly sweet and molasses-y. Rich and deep. I think the aroma was my favorite part of this beer!

Taste/Body: Molasses flavor up front with prevalent hops. Deep, rich and spicy with a kicky tang. Thick mouthfeel.

Aftertaste: Moderate bitterness and tang.

Overall: Very delicious and lush with lots of depth and layers of flavor. Again, I really liked the aroma.

Alright, this is my first eisbock ever. I was expecting similarities to the other offerings from Weisses Bräuhaus G. Schneider & Sohn. Nope.

500mL into a tulip, this beer pours as plum-brown with a uniform opacity of color. Foam is rich and copious. Smell reminds me of malt, plums, molasses / demerara sugar, and soy sauce (it would make an interesting marinate for fish)

Into the pie hole: the first two characteristics noted were sweetness and richness. There are syrup-like qualities to this beer. It is intense and heavy. To my tastes this beer should be matched with food: chinese cuisine or deep fried/battered fish would pair nicely.

Overall, an excellent beer, with the 12% ABV not immediately apparent.

A: Murky and dark, with a sweet tea appearance. No head at all, even when poured vigorously...only a very thin ring of tiny white bubbles. No lacing.

S: Alcohol is in the forefront, with a slightly fruity smell. It's a bit like raisins, or more accurately raisin bread...it has a slightly sweet smell that you get when cooking raisin bread.

T: The flavors are very similar to the scent. It has a huge fruity flavor up front, with some bread-like aftertaste. No bitterness, just lots of sweetness. I don't taste much alcohol. Very malty.

M: The mouthfeel is very very full. It is unquestionably a sipper. It has a pretty sharp bite.

O: I like this beer, especially for the fact that it is 12% and it masks the alcohol relatively well. You can still tell it is there, but it still tastes like a beer. There were only a few downsides, where I thought it was a bit too fruity and I would have liked more head...even though it's hard for a high alcohol beer to have a decent head, this didn't have one at all.

Given this as a gift in a single bottle for christmas. Poured into a wheat beer glass, pours deep cloudy orange with a 2-3 finger white head.
From here on out, my review is biased; I was given this because I like eisbocks, but the giver didn't realize it was a weizen-eisbock. I'm sure this is a world-class beer as the Bros have said, but wheat beers are NOT my thing.
The smell disgusts me entirely, almost to the point of throwing up. That yeasty, wheaty aroma which I know is a sign of a great wheat beer, makes me sick. It smells like an old peanut butter and jelly sandwich to me.
The taste isn't much better; if I ignore the smell I can stomach it, but barely. It's just a yeasty mess in my mouth. Again, I know it's an excellent beer, but I really do not like the style.
Mouthfeel was good, relatively full-bodied as wheat beers are wont to be. Unfortunately for me, the full mouthfeel only exacerbated my gustatory distress.
Overall, I feel like I'm not being fair to this beer. It's obvious it's an excellent beer, but wheat beers in general are not my thing.

**2006 Bottle Review**

I've been hanging onto this for a number of years. Christmas seemed a fitting occasion to crack it open!

A - With any beer of this age and alcohol percentage, it's no surprise it pours without a head and very little carbonation for that matter. Still and gorgeous, I left the sediment resting in the bottle...for now. Aventinus is a clear deep tawny mahogany color with ruby highlights.

S - Subtle notes of soft wheat, sticky caramel, and ruby port-soaked raisin escape this low-key beer until it's swirled when disaster strikes! Good bye smoothness, hello soy sauce. Thankfully it hasn't reached that "Triple Bock" stage yet.

T - Malty depth consumes this beer from first sip as toasted wheat bread drizzled with melted caramel and clover honey marries the yeast's dark fruitiness. Layers of complexity unfold with sangria-soaked raisin, red grape, and fig newton notes.

M - Carbonation is faint giving this beer a flat, though not disruptively so, feel that aids it's already smooth body and warming alcohol finish. This beer goes to show how tacking a few years on a high alcohol beer can really smooth it out.

O - Aventinus Weizen Eisbock might be a high alcohol beer but this one is showing significant signs of age leading me to believe I waited a little too long to crack this precious beer open. Its thick maltiness creates a beautiful marriage with the yeast esters but peeking notes of soy sauce disrupt the flow. 2006 in 2012 is good but not as wonderful as it could be.

This is my first Eisbock. Looking forward to it- the only thing I know about Eisbocks are from the BJCP guidelines. Its Christmas Eve, the kids are in bed, the wife is wrapping gifts, so I think this is a great time to review this beer!

The appearance is a somewhat opaque/translucent dark brown with an off-white head that is gathering at the sides of the pour. Almost stout or porter like until you hold it up to the light. Smells of dried dark fruits like raisins or plums, very malty and slight alcohol. Tastes sweet, dried fruits, toasted malt, some alcohol evident, and a dry crisp finish. This is an intense beer with many developed flavors, and I find it interesting that hop flavors are not one of them. This may be the antithesis of an American Barleywine. Mouthfeel is full, and low carbonation. This one is a sipper, and is developing more of a flavor profile as it warms.

From what I understand, this is a difficult and time consuming beer to make. First it must be brewed to a higher strength, then frozen to concentrate, then lagered for a long period of time. This one is a nice alternative to other high strength, highly hopped ales like American Barleywines, Russian Imperial Stouts and Imperial IPAs. Highly recommeded-just to expand the palate perspective! Merry Christmas!

500mL poured into a champagne flute at 7C tasted at 9-12C.

Dark earthy rich cocoa nibs-chestnut-mahogany brown, a light reddish clay hues with a thick and stable sea foam head that is spotty but generally dense 7cm head that remains indefinitely. Mostly clear with a little bit of hazing, but high density gives a more obstructed appearance. Sporadic but ample carbonation. Very nice but with little lacing that I would have otherwise expected.

Nose of alcohol, coming in at 12% this is not surprise, but it doesn't come across as gasoline or as evaporation of the excess. Warm caramel and dried, juicy fruits: plum and raisin. Balancing spices of all spice, old nutmeg (but not the zest of mace) and clove. Elevated bright notes that flow generously like a cool spring breeze in a citrus orchard.

Dark cooked and dried fruits: plums, figs and apricots. Creamy malt flows just over a light residual sugars and smooth chocolaty roast nuts. Dark bready yeasts lends to the satisfying body that holds up the fruit. The more i look the more the perfect blending melds flavours my palate is just unable to accurately distinguish. Impeccable for the style for what I have previously tasted.

Mouth feel is smooth and generously light while creamy and rich. Lots of sugars and a little fat on the finish. Luxury.

Just great. Way too drinkable for a 12% ABV. Smooth, robust and as easy or complex as you could want it to be. I would have liked to seen a little more layering on the nose and a lot more lacing. The 5 on taste is more like a 4.8-4.9 for style for sure, but was just a little to condensed for my palate and for personal taste is a tad generous (more like 4.5), but amazing; likewise the nose but layered complexity on the nose is more important to my "unbiased" rating than is layering in the flavour profile. So the nose is more like 4.25 but worth the round up.

God damned great fucking beer!

500ml bottle. Very nice to see this offering in Alberta, when the others from this brewery have been available here for so long.

This beer pours a very hazy, dark burnt amber hue, with a teeming tower of tight foamy, rather creamy ecru head, which takes it rather easy in coming down to earth, eventually leaving some walk of shame, ripped nylon lace around the glass.

It smells of rich, dark, fleshy orchard fruit, some additional mushy banana, caramel/toffee malt, a mildly astringent/sweet wheat dichotomy, a bit of aged demarara rum, and earthy, somewhat musty hops. The taste is a sweet, sugary wheat/barley combo from the outset, followed closely by banana pudding, soft spices - barely evoking clove, perhaps only in my head - dark sugar, somehow differentiated molasses, a mild oily nuttiness, some port-like alcohol heat, and drying, earthy hops flying well under the radar.

The carbonation is tame and equally frothy for the most part, with little to apologize for, the body a stout, sturdy medium weight, and a bit syrupy in its otherwise impeccable smoothness. It finishes still sweet - fruity, malty, and boozy - all well tempered in their sexy restraint.

Wow - what an experience - so many input components that I was unfairly waiting for at least one of them to go off the rails, but, nope - mea culpa - everything is oh so very well balanced and integrated. A hallmark for this uncommonly available style, which given its inherent nature, needs finesse and subtly in order to be even remotely drinkable. This has both, and more, in spades, so grab one if you can.

Taste: all that the nose promises! Loads of flavor.

After reading all the extolling reviews on this rare and special beer, I prepared myself for a powerful punch of strong flavor and a malty rich mouthfeel that could live up to the hype (and price).
Honestly, I was disappointed.

The beer seemed a little "bland" in taste compared to the hype I was reading all over the internet. I'm sure if I would not have psyched myself up for "the best beer experience of my life" then I would have enjoyed this beer more and accepted it as the special delicate treat that it is.

I will definitely try this beer again while managing my expectations.
I'm sure I'll enjoy it more next time.

Bottle date 09.160 - If I'm right, that makes it a 2009 vintage.

Pours brown and murky with burnt orange highlights. It's head is small for a weissbier, and dissipates very quickly to a thin cap. Lacing is spotty. Powerful aroma boasts fig, raisin, and overripe banana notes. Delicate cookie dough and clove aromas linger in the background. There is something of a boozy quality to it that actually meshes quite well with the rest of its scent. It's flavour is sweet, malty, and estery. Fig, raisin, and sweet honey up front followed by banana, slight pumpernickel, and a mild tang thay keeps the sugars from cloying.

Full-bodied with medium carbonation. Feels somewhat syrup and sticky in the mouth. Well-integrated alcohol provides pleasant warmth to the finish without making it harsh. The richness of flavour in this beer verges on decadence, making it a real treat if you fancy something sweet. Love it.

A: Pouring a nice thick head in my tulip gives the Eisbock a robust look. The lacing on the sides is minimal, but the head retains a creamy foam that allows the smell to liven up the joint.

S: One of my favorite parts of this beer is the aroma. Heavy notes of banana, fig, malt, and even a slight nudge of pineapple create a complex and inviting panoply of olfactory experiences. There's a reason this thing gets so much love.

T: Candied plums, slightly roasted figs, clove, and cinnamon notes all colide in a beautiful collage of flavor. The malts provide a rich texture alongside the alcohol notes. Taking a breath allows the spices to tickle the tongue.

M: Medium-bodied, the leaves a slight aftertaste and goes down way too smoothly.

O: There's a reason this is one of my all-time faves. World-class, this beer is.

Beer bottle (33 cl. #2012/9349) purchased from Bières & Chopes, tasted in 2012.

Appearance : reddish brown color, with tan foamy head.
Smell : roasted malt, dark fruits and clove aromas.
Taste & mouthfeel : dark roasted malt, spicy with dried fruits flavours. Long lasting alcohol in finish.
Drinkability : a very nice good beer in the style Eisbock. To drink very slowly at cellar temperate in cold of winter.

G. Schneider & Sohn's Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock: bottle dated 2011; serial # 005218.

I poured about half of the bottle into my glass, then gave the rest of the bottle a modest swirl, poured about half of what remained, then gave the final few ounces a more vigorous swirl, poured them in, and there still remained some sediment on the bottom of the bottle. This yielded a hazy, chocolate-brown body that allows some burnt umber and rust hues to shine through when held up to a strong light source. The grayish beige head rises high and stick around a while before slowly falling to a half-inch ring of foam that evenly covers the top of the beer. I waited and waited for the ring to dissolve into lace. It didn't. Rarely have I seen such staying power.

The beer's aroma is strong enough to reach my nose before I lean in for closer inspection. When I do, I'm greeted with an intriguing bouquet. Dark rum and molasses are at the fore, and complemented by notes of roasted dried figs, prunes and raisins, cloves, and black pepper. A very mild citral aroma lurks somewhere in the background. My mother decorates and perfumes the house in the wintertime by sticking cloves into whole, unpeeled oranges The aromas in this beer remind me of times spent sipping ports and red wine and eating rich holiday fare with the faint smell of those spicy oranges in the background.

My first sip of this beer tells me that it begs to be sipped slowly. Its body is thick, almost syrupy. The alcohol's flavor is well-integrated: It is palpable on the palate, and warms both throat and stomach.

The myriad flavors suggested in the nose are present in each sip, but to them are added those of tawny port wine and cane sugar, roasted hazelnut, black bread, and dates in molasses syrup. The flavors dance about on the palate and grow bolder and more complex as the beer warms. Drink this brew slowly.

Aventinus Weizen-Eisbock is one of the most interesting beers I've tasted. It me over an hour to finish the 11.2 oz. bottle, and when I was finished I thought to myself that I was just growing accustomed to the beer's intensity and complexity. I'll be revisiting this one soon.
