Oh my. At first I thought something was wrong with this beer- it poured think and cloudy. Then I remembered, well, this is a special beer, and the combination of wheat, dunkel and bock, and then sorta frozen, I really shouldn't judge until I take a taste. Very malty, bready aroma's. Taste is, like....a regular Aventinus on steroids, but legal. Such an intense flavor it's almost hard to decribe . There is sweetness, and some traditonal weizen flavors as well- banna and clove. But everything is strong AND mellow. That's the beaty of this beer. Just an exceptional beer. Very warming and delightful by the fire.

Enjoyed this 11.2oz bottle out of a large snifter glass.

A: Pours a dark ruby hue with a solid off-white tannish head that slowly dissipates leaving a partial trail and persistent lace.

S: Sweet aroma dominated by dark fruits and alcohol.

T: Intense dark fruit flavor of dried plums and figs followed by some dark chocolates and coffee notes. Finishes very sweet and fruity.

M: Very strong and boozy. Heavy body and medium carbonation.

O: Wow – This beer has tons of complex flavors and aroma and enough alcohol to put you to sleep. Nice sippin beer at 12% abv. A beer for special occasions.

Appearance: Utter, complete, total perfection. Caramel syrup with cotton foam. Extremely thick. There is complete darkness; no light gets through when held up to light.

Smell: Bananas. Cloves. Chocolate. Bubblegum. Smells like a hef on steroids. Sweet maple syrup with a hint of pine. Smells like whiskey when it warms.

Taste/Mouthfeel: This stuff is strong. Extremely full-bodied. Pine, caramel, cloves, and a hint of maple hit you first. Then the bourbon, vanilla, and oak, followed by plum and banana. Some coffee in the finish. Tastes like an IPA, hef, and stout all in one.

Overall: Absolutely incredible. Almost speechless.

Serving: 12oz bottle poured into a pint glass
Served: March 2013

Appearance: Actually, if there is one fault in this beer, it is that it is not the prettiest. Kind of chocolatey, kind of raisin colored, but the yeast in it all makes it scatter the light a little weird around the edges which makes it kind of look brownish-grey at times. No head to speak of because of the alcohol content.

Smell: Smells just like an Aventinus- raisins, dates, molasses, and yeasts.

Taste: Tastes like a concentrated Aventinus (surprise!). The Aventinus flavors, if anything, hit you more in this beer because you have less carbonation and yeasty flavors to get in the way of the dark, molasses-y fruity flavors. Interestingly, I find you can feel the alcohol on this one way more than other high ABV beers (cf. 120 Minute IPA), which is actually a little offputting.

Mouthfeel: Smooth and creamy, but with an astringent alcohol presence.

Overall: Amazing beer. Though you can taste/feel the alcohol at times, it is still immensely pleasurable, especially if you like just plain-old regular Aventinus. Gets better as it warms.

Bottle: solid dark brown 330mL bottle with a stylish German-style label. Has me expecting something high quality.

Appearance: very dark amber brown in colour with a limited, fine carbonation just visible. A two-finger head drops quickly to a solid, creamy one-finger with decent retention. Looks good!

Aroma: carries some definite dark wheat aromas - there are the usual bananas and cloves, but with an undercurrent of sweet malts, molasses and dark cherry.

Taste: there are the usual bananas and cloves, but with an undercurrent of sweet malts, molasses and dark cherry. A wonderfully rich and complex beer.

Aftertaste: a touch of sherry accompanies some warming alcohol that fills the mouth nicely.

Mouth feel: rich, velvety and smooth, with a low carbonation. Slides down easy - very nice!

Overall: this is an exceptional German dark wheat ale - smooth in texture with a complexity I haven't seen before in a dark wheat. Top notch!
